PRESENTS THE ULTIMATE GARAGE FIT-OUT
I
’d like to think that many New Zealand Classic Car readers would admit to having what we would call a reasonably well-equipped home garage in which to work on their classics, although all but the most fortunate of us have to make do to one degree or another when it comes to setting up our home workshops. Put simply, we have to accept that there’s a limit to what we can afford. However, if money is no object, we reckon everyone’s dream garage would include some of the items featured in our ‘Ultimate Garage Fit-out’.
Tooling up
For starters, I bet we’d all like to get our trailer up to ISL Limited and fill it up to the brim with gear from their extensive range of top-quality Teng Tools, including every hand tool imaginable, as well as one or

two of those cool Formula One–type rollaway tool boxes the size of a double-door fridge to contain all the loot. Of course, with all those tools, we’d probably just get by with a four-car garage, while a separate two-car workshop area would be ideal — all with five-metre– high ceilings and a half dozen rows of sturdy metal shelves to house all those important spare parts. Then there’d be a big and sturdy workbench with loads of overhead cabinets — and let’s not forget a hydraulic hoist or two courtesy of Sulco Tools Ltd. Let’s face it, hydraulic hoists are an absolute necessity these days for the classic car owner who enjoys rolling up his (or her) sleeves and getting stuck into those important regular maintenance tasks. That way you can also work on your classic standing up, a dream come true if you’re getting a little long in the tooth or are just
tired of rolling around under cars, getting grit in your eyes, or having spanners drop on your head from above. Hoists are also great for saving valuable space if your garage is on the smaller size — one car up in the air on the first story and a second on the ground floor.
The finishing touches
Fed up with crawling around on greasy, cold, hard, and stained concrete? If that’s the case, Swisstrax have the answer with their range of heavy-duty, easyto-install flooring systems. As well as the Swisstrax system, other flooring options include a range of resilient, hard-wearing carpet specially manufactured for garages courtesy of Installed Limited, while Coating Technologies can offer a good-looking and hard-wearing floor coating to suit almost any application. The final choice is yours — but any of those options will add extra style, and even safety, to the home-workshop environment. And when it comes to safety, don’t forget lighting. A dim and dark home garage can be a dangerous place, so efficient lighting is just as important in the ‘ultimate garage’ as anything else — and that includes making
sure you’ve got plenty of natural light. PSP Industries Limited offer a great range of options to suit every garage; options that will allow your classic to bask in the natural light whilst you attend to its every need. Certainly just as important, if not the most important, aspect of your ultimate garage is that it has to protect your prized classic cars from the ravages of Mother Nature. The last thing we want following a massive deluge of heavy rain is to come home and find all the contents of our garage afloat because we’ve overlooked adequate drainage requirements. A call to ACO Ltd will put your mind at ease as they can offer professional advice and install the necessary drainage required to keep your pride and joy as dry as the proverbial bone. To finish everything off — a brand-spanking-new garage door is always a good idea, adding a touch of style to your house and, of course, added security. B&D Doors offer a huge range of secure, remotely controlled garage doors all built to New Zealand conditions. And if your home garage isn’t up to par, what are you waiting for? Check out our listings, see what’s on offer then pick up the phone and start making plans for your very own ultimate garage.

here are many ways to build your garage or workshop into the space you’ve always wanted — a space where you can comfortably store, work on, or just gaze at your prized cars with pride. You may have all the tools, equipment, and accessories to cover any aspect of classic car maintenance, but are you pleased with the garage environment? For some, having a well-worn garage is a mark of pride — like scuffed and oil-stained tools, or that permanently oil-stained pair of overalls, a clearly used garage is the ultimate sign of someone who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty; a true classic car lover. Others seek a bit more organization, a bit more cleanliness, and one of the easiest ways to change the atmosphere of your workspace is in the floor — after all, it’s one of the largest surface areas. Here, Swisstrax can really make a difference, offering modular flooring tiles that are both easy to install and maintain, and can completely change the look and usability of your garage. The interlocking floor tiles are an easy way to clean up a garage floor that you aren’t happy with — covering cracks or oil stains couldn’t be easier. One of Swisstrax’s biggest advocates is none other than Jay Leno himself,

who has had Swisstrax floor tiles installed in his own Big Dog Garage — the fact that the plastic floor tiles could support the weight of a 6000lb car was particularly surprising to Mr Leno, who had Swisstrax Ribtrax tiles used to display the collection of Deusenbergs and Bugattis that he takes great pride in. They’re easy to install too, offering a practical and modern alternative to standard concrete flooring. The tiles simply snap together, and their consistent shape makes thorough surface coverage a breeze; the average garage can be covered in a matter of
BEFORE hours — a remarkably quick and easy way to bring it into the modern era. Maintenance is just as easy, with a simple hose down or vacuum usually sufficient to keep the tiles clean. n the surface, garage doors might sound like a non-event when it comes to crafting the ultimate garage. But remember, the garage door is the line of defence that is most frequently under threat when it comes to potential burglars. So, along with being visually appealing, they must be strong enough to keep your pride and joy secure. First opening its doors in 1962 — pun not intended — Garador are the largest garage door and opener distributor network in New Zealand. They stock rolling, tilting, and sectional garage doors, as well as the interesting new ‘flexador’, as marketing manager Matt Tegg explains: “It’s a hybrid between the roller door and the sectional door. This was an idea developed by B&D Doors in Australia, where the door rolls upwards and back along the roof, using a roller door curtain so that it takes up minimal headroom.”
But Garador product is more than just a pretty face. Their non-wooden doors are put together with robust, strong New Zealand steel, sourced from Coloursteel — ensuring that those wanting to try and break in with force will have a torrid time. This focus on security also extends to the garage door openers, as Matt explains: “Our openers use a 128-bit encryption, a characteristic common in many secure banks around the world, so there’s no real chance of the opener’s code being copied. They’re also very reliable in terms of the service indicator they all come with as standard, which reminds people of when they need to be serviced.” Sectional garage doors are the most popular among the motoring-inclined. This makes sense when you factor in how they’re produced specifically to overlap with the door opening, to prevent any draft coming through, and they can be insulated to reduce heattransfer through the door to the goodies within. “If you’re insulating everything else in the garage you may as well do the door, too,” says Matt. “We have a network of 35 Garador distributors, who sell our products throughout the country in every major city,” Matt adds, “And there will always be someone local to help with installation and after-sales service.”

n many cases, the ‘best’ garages aren’t necessarily those that are the best equipped, but the ones that are the best designed. Of course, what’s best for you is totally dependent upon your needs or preferences — for some of us, tools and equipment will always take priority, while others prefer a degree of tidiness. But there is no reason you can’t have both, and a garage, where efforts have been made to achieve the best in both usability and functionality, will always stand out as an environment for man and machine to coexist. What are we talking about? As classic car owners, we all want the space we share with our cars to be as user-friendly as can be, and beyond the ‘essentials’, like tools, memorabilia, and the ever-important ‘man cave’ area, you reach the true essentials — things like lighting, security, and even something you may not have given a second thought: drainage. As global climate change is generally accepted as causing more frequent extreme rainfall events, ACO’s innovation has seen the development of products and system solutions to manage these events. Effectively dealing with storm-water run-off is crucial in any garage plan. The reasons are clear — just as excessive exposure to moisture will take its toll on your car, it will also affect your garage. Not only can standing water cause severe structural damage, but it may also infiltrate the garage, leading to water damage, formation of mould, and fungal infection.

However, effective surface-drainage management can be accomplished without excessive hassle through the use of either grated pits or grated trench drains, such as those manufactured by ACO. Comparisons have shown modular trench drains to have lower total installed costs. Grated pits are one solution, positioned in front of the garage door. However, they may miss the surface run-off if the driveway is not contoured towards each pit. This is difficult to do and not very aesthetically pleasing. The alternative, grated trench drains, can work far better in such situations. A grated trench drain allows efficient interception for a flat-level driveway. The trench drain can be positioned parallel to the garage entrance, intercepting all water run-off that is directed towards the entrance. Essentially, it’s easier to set up, nicer to look at, more efficient at surface drainage, and will even last longer, if installed properly. ACO has an extensive range of grates, suitable for any drainage solution required. Contact ACO on 0800 448 080, or visit aconz.co.nz, if you’d like to learn more about how you can transform your garage from a space for storing your car, into a place for sharing with your car.

f course, once you’ve created your ultimate shed, you’ll want to roll your sleeves up and rip into your personal project. But an impressive workspace is nothing without a well-organized, highquality range of tools to help you get the job done as efficiently as possible. “You’re only as good as your tools,” as they say in the classics. This is where Teng Tools comes in. With around 3000 Teng Tools products available in New Zealand, the team cover almost every kind of tool you could possibly need for your garage — from socket sets, torque wrenches, and specialized service tools, right through to screwdrivers, spanners, pliers, and impact tools. The team also produce storage systems so that you can avoid those ‘where on earth did I leave it?’ scenarios. In fact, Teng Tools make 20 different kinds of tool cases and toolboxes, and more than 120 different kinds of interlocking tool trays, meaning that they can provide storage solutions that cater to the individual — from those who spend every waking moment in their garage, to those who just enjoy the casual weekend tinkering session. It goes without saying that the tools offered by Teng Tools are of a very high quality. All tools produced by the
brand are designed to either meet or exceed stringent international standards for tools, including those set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN). Every tool across the range also comes with its own individual lifetime guarantee. Marketing manager Stephen Cole is quick to back up the claim. “Our range and our quality are second to none — but you’re not going to pay the earth for it. The service and backup that we offer is also outstanding. From time to time, things do break, but we’re very fair in how we categorize any breakages according to our standard lifetime warranty, which spans our whole range.” And it’s not just Stephen who gives these endorsements. Teng Tools’ products are used by the New Zealand Defence Force, Fonterra, and many other major national and international companies including Swedish supercarmanufacturer Koenigsegg, as well as world-class brands like Volvo and Bentley! Teng Tools is a truly global brand. We’re all familiar with the joy a simple afternoon of working on your automotive project can produce, but that joy is always that little bit sweeter when you’re utilizing a set of tools capable of working as hard as you are. But it’s Stephen who explains it best. “People get that sense of enjoyment from working on your own vehicle or motorcycle, and if you’ve got the right tools for the job, it makes the process a lot easier and a lot more satisfying. And that’s where a brand like Teng Tools fits in, because our range is so vast that you’ll always have something there that’ll suit what you’re doing.”

he garage in which you house and work on your classic vehicle is a pretty important space, but does it feel like a special, inviting place? It’s almost an unspoken Kiwi tradition to tinker away in cold, dark garages and sheds, relentlessly working to finish that project car ‘some day’. There are, however, ways to improve the usability of your workspace, and one of the first places to look is at lighting. We all know how frustrating and unpleasant it can be working in poorly lit conditions, but the solution needn’t be electrical — skylights are an extremely feasible lighting solution, with huge lighting benefits at no cost to your energy consumption. And where skylights are concerned, PSP’s Suntuf Industrial/fr is hard to go past as a material of choice. Suntuf Industrial/fr allows 85 per cent light through, while eliminating glare and providing a brighter light — imagine a frosted light bulb compared to a traditional transparent bulb — and cutting out 99.9 per cent of harmful UV rays. The polycarbonate construction of Suntuf Industrial/ fr means that it is shatterproof — it’s rated at around 250 times stronger than glass — in addition to being lightweight and flexible. This is reflected in the warranty, which covers light transmission for 25 years, and hail and

hat are the ‘must-haves’ that come to mind when you consider your dream garage or workshop? Perhaps a large space, the best tools and equipment, or the best security — chances are, carpeting won’t have made the cut. And it’s a common misconception that carpets and garages are mutually exclusive — carpet your garage, and you can’t store or work on your car in it. However, as Andrew Pegler from Installed. points out, this is not the case at all. “Carpeting can turn your garage into a safe, warm, comfortable, and multipurpose space for yourself and your car. A lot of people don’t even know it [workshop-specific carpet] exists until they see it.” he says.
I breakage for 15 years — this meets New Zealand durability standards contained in the Ministry of Business’s Building Code, which is especially important if resource consent will be required. Additionally, the product has the highest fire rating (Group 1S) within BRANZ. The results speak for themselves, though — take a look at this workshop that has been equipped with PSP Suntuf Industrial/ fr, and the quality of light that is achievable in a modest garage environment. “It’s 100-per-cent waterproof, so it doesn’t rot or smell, and won’t get slippery like concrete when it’s wet. We’re commonly asked about oil leaks or spills too, and it’s so easy to clean — put some sawdust down, dry it out, and vacuum it up. It really is a carpet for you, your family, and your car.” It’s also durable — “We get asked a lot about how durable the carpet is,” Andrew states. “Autex, the manufacturer, installed the product in a fire station 38 years ago, and it’s still there. Sure, it looks like it’s had 38 years of fire station use, but it’s still there doing what it was designed to. “It’s manufactured sustainably here in New Zealand, and because the product is bound with heat rather than chemicals, it is totally family-friendly,” Andrew says. In addition, it’s cost-effective — especially when compared with the cost of residential carpeting — but can completely transform your garage into an inviting, homely space. It’s merely a matter of seeing beyond the misconception of carpets in garages.

f you have lavished money and attention on your hobby — whether it is classic cars or motorbikes — you’ll want to ensure they’re stored in a garage or workshop reflective of the effort you have put into them. But one area that is often overlooked in garaging is flooring. “Most garage and workshop floors are concrete,” says Hylton Jones of Coating Technologies Ltd, “and the very nature of garages, workshops, and classic cars means that spills do happen. Concrete gets dirty very easily, and what a lot of people don’t realize is that it retains a lot of dust, too. It’s not the best surface to store, or work on, your classic car or motorbike.” Coating Technologies’ Cotec Tuff Floor WB Epoxy is a water-based thin-film epoxy flooring, which has recently undergone significant development to produce a tough, durable, and chemically resistant finish — that means no more stains. “Most other epoxy flooring solutions are solvent based, but Tuff Floor WB Epoxy is water based, meaning you don’t get the nasty smell or effects,” Hylton says, “and being waterborne, it’s also extremely easy to apply for the DIYer, and is available in a range of colours, with a colour-matching option also available.” He adds that “Tuff Floor WB Epoxy is applied over correctly prepared concrete that has either been lightly ground using a diamond grinder, or acid etched. Acid etching is easy, as
we have a powdered acid that is simply dissolved in water and applied to the surface with a broom. Once it has stopped ‘fizzing’, the floor is hosed off and allowed to dry.” Hylton has a word of advice, too — “Since concrete floors are all different, if you have any doubt, or would like a better understanding of what’s required, it’s easy to call us for advice.”
