PRODUCT ZERUST Preventing rust and corrosion The Vapour Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI) utilized by Zerust products — the main ingredient being sodium nitrite — prevent corrosion by releasing a vapour within an enclosed space. The overall effect is rather like the anode/cathode method used in chroming, as the vapour corrosioninhibitors form a protective barrier that effectively interrupts the electrochemical corrosion process. The vapour corrosion-inhibitor portion of Zerust products is made of proprietary chemical formulations that are invisible, odourless, non toxic, non reactive, non flammable, and non allergenic, so they’re safe to use. The protective layer they produce remains on the surface of the metal as long as there is no significant, continuous exchange of air. Zerust’s products range from VCI-impregnated plastic bags and sheathing to small strips and larger capsules, products that can actively prevent corrosion for anywhere between one and five years, depending upon the application. The uses for Zerust are not restricted to protecting parts — pop one of the capsules or special drawer liners into your toolbox, close it up, and you’ll keep that pesky surface rust away from your valuable tools. Zerust products are even great for keeping corrosion away from inboard
ZERUST There’s nothing worse than stripping down your long block or gearbox, and finding the most vital components — your crankshaft, pistons, flywheel, and gearsets — have tarnished with corrosion after they’ve sat on the bench for a week or so. But what if there was some way of keeping those components in immaculate condition, something to give you confidence if the project gets delayed. After all, we’ve seen it before — components such as crankshafts left too long, only to be rendered useless from too much corrosion. Fortunately, an effective and simple-to-use method of controlling rust and corrosion is now available in New Zealand — one that doesn’t

rely on the time-consuming application of potentially toxic and messy coatings of grease, oil, or paint. Indeed, this system is as simple as sealing the parts that need protecting within a ziplock bag — how easy is that? You can simply grab those con-rods, crankshafts, or gearsets, and slide them into a bag where they’ll be safe from corrosion. If that all sounds like black magic, you’ve probably never heard of Vapour Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI). This is the technology employed in Zerust’s innovative range of corrosion-protection products — and the system has long been in use in the military and in the mining industry, proving its worth by inhibiting rust and corrosion on machinery that has been mothballed for later use.
engine bays on launches and jet skis. VCI-impregnated plastic sheath is also available in 200mm and 300m widths, and these can be cut to sizes suitable for storing longer items such as propshafts. Indeed, Zerust can even supply VCI-impregnated bags large enough to contain an entire car or motorcycle — seal up the bag and you’ve got the perfect classic-car storage solution. Even better, the Zerust system is easily affordable, with simple VCI strips and ziplock bags costing as little as a few bucks — so there’s no excuse not to try Zerust products.
