The group has grown to over 400 employees, including 70 clinical providers and now has 25 offices throughout Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. While the name is synonymous with primary care, the group recently added the following specialty groups: neurology, vein specialty and sleep medicine specialty. Throughout the years Palmetto Primary Care Physicians have remained leaders in healthcare, not only among the local community – but also nationally. They were among one of the first physician’s groups to integrate Electronic Medical Records (EMR) almost ten years ago and most recently launched a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) pilot project. While it is the main topic of conversation in many medical organizations, very few have launched and measured the success of a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). The group has received national attention for their results, including Medical News Today, American Medical News and will be presenting at the 12th Annual Summit for URAC in Chicago this October – which focuses on continuous improvement on quality in healthcare. The most impressive aspect of this pilot program has been the integration of technology to improve patient’s quality of care. In order for the primary care physician to plan coordinated care through their team, they need to have all of the information in front of them. Electronic Medical Record’s aggregate information from the local Emergency Rooms, case managers and other specialists that the patient might be seeing, which allow the physician to look at the whole picture. Instead of looking at just one component – like the rash on a patient’s arm, the primary care physician has access to all of the patient’s medical records. Maybe noticing new medication that the specialist provided, which is now causing the patient’s rash. The Patient Centered Medical Home model allows all providers to look at the same picture. Another advantage to the Patient Centered Medical Home model is that it makes for healthier patients because it focuses on preventative care. By having a team of specialists, case managers and medical educators at the patient’s fingertips, it provides them with year-round care as opposed to just an annual visit. The residual affects of properly taking blood pressure medication or managing their diabetes could very well raise their quality of life, avoiding more life threatening medical issues. Car Pros Plaza
Maaco, Meineke, Econo Lube all under one convenient roof
I
t doesn’t take long to figure out why John Mulherin “flunked retirement.” He’d finished up his career in financial services with an 11-year run as CEO of Ziegler Corporation, an investment bank in Chicago. He turned the company around. The job, he says, was the capstone job of his four-decade career in financial services. When he and his wife Lynn retired two years ago, they chose the Lowcountry. “In my travels, I found no place better than the greater Charleston area,” he said. Soon after the move here, the self-described young 60-year-old found himself looking for a second act. The goal was to stay engaged in life, business and their new community. He and his wife Lynn had worked in small businesses before and he had taught courses in business at DePaul University in Chicago. Capitalizing on their combined past experience they decided to start a small, consumerrelated business. “One of the most frustrating experiences a consumer deals with is automotive services. There are three main questions: Whom do you trust? Where do you go? How much to do you pay?” Mulherin wanted to improve the car care experience most people have. He decided on a full service auto facility. The business plan he developed came after numerous interviews and on-site visits to companies involved in auto care. He hit upon Driven Brands, a company headquartered in Charlotte, that franchises multiple automotive repair brands. With their help, he was able to put the bundle of services together under one roof branded as Car Pros Plaza: Maaco, Meineke and EconoLube.
Lynn and John Mulherin at their Innovation Station, located within their new Car Pros Plaza facility.
Car Pros Plaza offers one-stop auto care in a pleasant facility. The tropical green walls add life to the large space. The comfortable chairs in the carpeted waiting area features TV and coffee. To his knowledge, it is the first facility of its kind in the country. The business employs about 20 people. Mulherin has been pleased with the reception his new company – which emphasizes customer service – has received in Summerville. The gist of the comments he has received from customers is that the idea is both unexpected and obvious. And the concept seems to have found an immediate customer base bringing success even in difficult times. Mulherin says the sucT LANCE cess may, in fact, be because of the uneasy economy. “There is a high demand for cost-effective solutions for keeping a car on the road. cal climate and UV rays are tough on car finishes and can result in cracking, flaking paint, he says. “There is a need for what Maaco offers – low cost, high quality auto painting as well as collision repair,” Mulherin says. Car Pros Plaza is set up for high volume with a lot of investment in automation for auto body
services. The Mulherins were also looking for a way to engage Car Pros Plaza in the community. When Donnie Pearson from the Dorchester County Career School approached the Mulherins about placing one of their students with the business as part of the work-based learning required by the school. It seemed like the right fit. “The school has talent that needs to be trained and we have the jobs and the experience,” Tyler Hill, a level three student at the school, has been learning his craft in a real world setting since school started in August. “I leave school about 11:30, grab some lunch and work at Car Pros Plaza from 12:30 to 6 p.m. every day,” Tyler says. “Tyler has a real role here. He’s an apprentice and works like everyone else.” As for the location of Car Pros Plaza, it’s at the very visible corner of Old Trolley and Miles roads in a building that had been dark and empty for several years. Car Pros Plaza is the foundation of a new life for its owners and has brought back to life an important property in the Summerville community. Car Pros Plaza is open every day but Sunday. Store Hours: Mon.-Fri. 7:30 a.m.- 6 p.m. Sat. 8 a.m – 4 p.m. Sun. Closed

LowCountry Women’s Specialists
O
We take care of you for life
ver the millennia, women have gotten used to putting up with certain facts of life. And the medical options for dealing with those problems have been limited, or involved major surgery. But Lowcountry Women’s Specialists wants women to know that today they have options. “It’s a service to women who need it who think they don’t have any other options,” said Sonya Wyatt, practice manager, of some of the procedures offered by the practice. Heavy, uncomfortable bleeding is one of those things that some women think they have to just deal with. Lowcountry Women’s Specialists offers endometrial ablation – an in-office procedure that depletes the lining in the uterus, thus eliminating or greatly reducing the volume of bleeding. The procedure is safe, uses a local anesthetic, has a quick recovery time and usually requires only an office co-pay, Wyatt said. Another in-office procedure is implantation of permanent birth control. Intended for women who know their families are complete, the procedure involves inserting flexible coils into the fallopian tubes, which results in a natural barrier to prevent the chance of future pregnancy. The method is very effective, doesn’t require general anesthesia or incisions, is hormone-free and allows the woman to quickly return to her normal routine. Lowcountry Women’s Specialists has performed more than 600 of the ablation and permanent birth control procedures since 2007. For women whose problems require a greater level of intervention, Lowcountry Women’s Specialists offers hysterectomies using “robotic” surgery. Using the da Vinci surgical system, available at Trident Medical Center, doctors make three to four small incisions, rather than the one large incision of open surgery, to perform the least invasive hysterectomy possible. Blood loss and scarring are minimal, Wyatt said, and unlike traditional surgery, the recovery time is minimal, too. “We have some women who get these and they’re back at work the next week,” she said. Wyatt said the practice has performed more than 300 sur-

Hearing Care of Summerville: 40+ years experience
H
Patient diagnosis, care, support and community involvement
earing loss affects far more than a person’s ears: it impacts virtually every aspect of life. Hearing Care of Summerville has been providing state of the art, knowledgeable, and caring treatment options to hearing loss patients since 1986. That hard work and caring treatment has paid off – the audiology practice has been voted best hearing aid center in Summerville for two years in a row and best audiology practice three years in a row by Summerville Journal Scene readers. Hearing Care of Summerville, located at 208 A East Second North Street in Summerville, has two very knowledgeable, experienced, educated audiologists on staff to serve patients. In fact, Dr. Beth Alberto and Dr. Chuck Whitfield bring more than 40 years of experience to their patients. But just as important, they bring a high level of empathy and genuine concern to their patients, said Lolli Haugh, Practice Manager for Hearing Care of Summerville. “They believe in treating a person like a patient, not a customer -- and their primary goal is educating each patient about the diagnosis and treatment options specific to that individual,” Haugh said. Dr. Alberto, who bought the practice from founder Emily Johnson in 2002, has a Masters Degree in Audiology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and a Doctorate in Audiology from the University of Florida. She has more than thirty years experience evaluating people with hearing impairment and in fitting hearing instruments. She is also a member of the American Academy of Audiology and the Tinnitus Practitioners Association. In addition, Dr. Alberto specializes in the management and treatment of tinnitus or ringing in the ears. In fact, she is one of only two in the state to be trained and administer the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment and she also facilitates a monthly support group for those who experience this debilitating condition, Haugh said. “As a person who has dealt with tinnitus personally, Dr. Beth has chosen this debilitating condition as her specialty and works diligently to provide education and support to others who suffer from tinnitus,” Haugh said. “Our tinnitus patients begin with a complete assessment to determine the most appropriate method of treatment which ranges from simple homemade devices for modulating the effects of tinnitus to the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment, a customized medical device that matches a patient’s

The Chamber – the voice of business One hundred years ago, 28 local businessmen got together to form the Summerville Business Men’s League, with the mission of promoting quality of life and the economic climate in the community. Now known as the Greater Summerville/Dorchester Chamber of Commerce, that league is bigger, encompasses more types of businesses than ever before, and represents business women as well as men. Its mission, though, remains constant. “We’re the voice of business,” said Chamber President/CEO Rita Berry. The Chamber has had a very busy and successful 100th anniversary year. In July, 130 volunteers participated in a membership event and brought in 250 new members, increasing membership more than 40 percent to 841 members. “That means we have a stronger voice,” Berry said. The Chamber is also advancing its technological capabilities. In addition to the current Chamber Facebook page, it has launched a Tourism Facebook page and plans to launch new websites by the end of the year: one site for the Chamber and one site geared to tourism. Each site will have matching mobile sites. The Chamber sites will include links to “hot deals” and “job openings” from members. Those features are now available on the current site but will be featured more prominently on the new site. The Chamber is strongly involved in education and workforce development and helped bring the Leader in Me Initiative, based on Stephen Covey’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” to Dorchester School District 2. The district was the first in South Carolina to implement the model, which began at Summerville Elementary School in the fall of 2010. Newington Elementary implemented the leadership model this fall. The Chamber, along with presenting sponsor Summerville Medical and other business partners is offering the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Leaders Signature Training to the community. October 20 and 21, 150 people will be able to utilize the training at a discounted rate, thanks to the Chamber’s partnerships. The Chamber has always sought to promote a pro-business environment. Its values are reflected in its five pillars:

Hometown bank for 100+ years
F
irst National Bank has been serving communities across the lowcountry for a long time – for more than 100 years, actually. With three branches – downtown, Sangaree and Boonehill Road -- and more than 40 employees in Summerville alone, First National Bank of South Carolina has been a mainstay in the Summerville
business community since 1960. There are reasons for the bank’s longevity and success, says President Ron Anderson. Strong customer service and friendly, downhome atmosphere are important complements to First National’s longstanding and well-earned reputation for honesty, integrity, and business savvy.

The bank started in 1905 as First National Bank of Holly Hill and has only had eight presidents in 106 years of being in business. It was one of just 13 banks in South Carolina allowed to remain open during the Great Depression. It has survived numerous national economic recessions, several wars, and more recently, the trend toward national consolidation and mega bank mergers. That’s not to say the bank has not grown and prospered – it has. Over the years First National has opened branches in Goose Creek, Harleyville, Eutawville, Ridgeville, and Summerville and not only has grown its business but has become actively involved in the communities in which it does business. So one could say the bank has grown, but it hasn’t grown too big for its britches, as the
First National Bank’s main branch in downtown Summerville. downhome saying goes. First National stays competitive. It offers all the services larger banks offer, from mortgage service to online banking, but has never compromised on customer service. It is that commitment to customer service that’s the main, and most important, difference, Anderson says. “We know our customers and greet them by name,” Anderson said. “You come here and we know who you are
and you know us. You hear laughter in the bank; you hear people talking. It’s all part of that hometown atmosphere we value and our customers value.” All employees are very accessible, he notes. That’s because First National enjoys, indeed prides itself on, taking care of customers and finding solutions to whatever questions they may have or situations they may encounter. That accessibility is not lim-
ited to front line employees, either, Anderson said. Everyone has an open door and everyone is right there, in the building, in plain sight. “You can actually talk to the president of the bank in person, face to face,” Anderson said. “I’m not hidden away from anyone. We realize that we have served the parent’s parents of many of our customers today and we intend to be here to serve today’s customers and their children’s children.”

Downtown organization works hard for Summerville
he Mission of the Summerville Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management(DREAM) is to preserve the historic identity, ensure the economic vitality, and promote a sense of community in the heart of Downtown Summerville. By all accounts, Executive Director Susan Morris and Jan Hursey, her assistant, are very successful in doing just that. Morris is not one to brag -- she is too busy making the dream a reality. Besides, there are many others willing to do that – visitors and business owners alike, and to her, their opinions are far more important. “My family traveled to Summerville and Charleston for the 4th of July,” Linda Martin, a visitor recently wrote. “We had such a wonderful time in Summerville, and we all hope to return very soon. Thank you so much for helping me, and giving me information about fun things to do with my kids while we were in Summerville. They had a blast! If anything ever comes up in the area that you think we would enjoy send me an email. Thank you so much” Downtown events such as Third Thursday in downtown Summerville have become very successful and popular. “I must say to this organization that last night was so much fun!!!,” wrote Sherri S. Hoover of Summerville. “It was so nice for this organization to organize this monthly Thursday event. Many of the people who work 9-5 are not able to enjoy the small shops in Summerville, and this is an excellent chance for them to enjoy the shops. My daughter, granddaughter and I try to come each month for this special treat and enjoy it so much!! I must say that last night you “outdid” yourself!!! It was truly magical…Thank you so much for making our night so special, and we hope you will do it again really soon!!” “I wanted to take a moment to let you know that we are so impressed and grateful for the way you have nurtured “Third Thursday” into a real success story,” noted Kevin Patrick, owner of Piazza Home. “The town comes alive during this event every month and the businesses are full… Keep up the good work!” But events are not the only method of making downtown viable nor are they the only functions upon which DREAM concentrates. DREAM organizes activities such as the upcoming DREAM Clean Sweep to spruce up the downtown area and educational

seminars for businesses to keep them updated on the newest social media marketing opportunities. DREAM also coordinates cooperative advertising with businesses to help stretch their advertising dollars and promote the entire downtown. So what is Morris doing and what is the secret of DREAM’s success? To Perry Cuda, owner of Perfectly Franks in Summerville, it’s a combination of creative innovation, meticulous organization, and

dedicated engagement with area business owners. It’s not enough to say one is going to put on events and plan promotions, he noted; it takes commitment, communication, and follow-through. “She (Susan) stays in touch, she actively seeks ideas and input from everyone, she’s always looking for ways to include everyone – and most importantly, she follows through,” Cuda said. “She does what she says she’s going to do, and sadly, these days that’s pretty rare.”
