Eco-conscious gardeners love compost BY SULLY WITTE editor@moultrienews.com
Compost can improve soil structure and texture and improve the soil’s capacity to hold water. It’s allnatural, while costconscious and homeowners like compost because they can improve their lawn and garden with out spending a dime. Ed Cochran’s family loves to grow tomatoes in the summer time. “I wanted a natural way to increase my tomato yield. That combined with help ing to reduce the amount of kitchen waste that ends up in the garbage made me want to look into composting,” he said. Adding compost improves soil fertility and can stimu late healthy root develop ment, enabling lawns and gardens to better withstand potentially harsh weather, such as summer heat waves or windy fall and winter af ternoons. Compost is effec tive because it provides food for microorganisms that con tribute to overall soil health. When these microorganisms are fed, they produce phos phorous, potassium and ni trogen. As a result, homeowners save money because they do not need to purchase po tentially costly soil amend ments to maintain healthy soil. When making compost, homeowners can use a host of ingredients they likely al ready have lying around the house. Dead houseplants, for instance, can be effec tive compost ingredients as long as the plants were not thorny or riddled with dis ease. Homeowners with pet rabbits, or gerbils or hamsters can even add these animals’ manure to their compost. When doing so, include the wood or paper bedding from the animal’s crate. Another potentially valuable compost ingredient is vegetable scraps, such as carrot peelings or even eggshells. When adding these items, be sure to bury them in the compost pile so they don’t attract animals. Cochran has been using the compost tumblers for two years. This is his second planting season. Cochran said they put no cooked food or animal prod ucts or byproducts in the composter.
Compost material con sists of browns (carbon) and greens (nitrogen). He com posts leaves, grass clippings, pine cones, small sticks, cof fee grounds, raw veggies, fruits, egg shells and shred ded paper. “We periodically add cheap sugary cola as a booster to supercharge the bacteria that breaks down the compost material,” he explained.
How it’s done Cochran had been looking for a composting tumbler !"#!$%&'()$*+$*&!"$+,-./+0!$ and durable, but those were fairly pricey, he said. A tumbler, which is en closed, allows for proper aera tion and moisture retention. This allows for an efficient environment for composting that eliminates the unpleas ant odors usually associated with some compost piles. By being enclosed, it also prevents unwanted critters and pests from rummaging through the compost. “After a couple of years of looking for the perfect tum bler, I read an article in a Boy Scout magazine that showed how to build one. I thought that this would be a great project for my son and me to build. The article referenced a website that provided the plans: with diagrams, a de tailed parts list and assembly instructions,” said Cochran. “We built one tumbler and my wife liked it so much that she asked that we build an other one. So, we now have a pair of them.” They are made from 55 gal lon pickle barrels (Cochran says he found a supplier on John’s Island via Craig’s List), The Cochrans used treated lumber for the bases, gal vanized and stainless steel hardware to construct the bases and attach the barrels to them. A few PVC plumb ing parts were needed for the “low tech” aeration/vent ing systems. The cost was ap proximately $100 per tumbler in parts and materials. The finished product is a black barrel composter with a large mouth and screw on lid. The barrel is manually ro tated about a pipe axis, which creates a tumbling/mixing action for the contents being

composted. The end result a compost tea that Cochran uses on or namentals in hanging bas kets. “We use the compost as a soil amendment for our to mato plants and any other vegetable or fruit we decide to try in the garden area. We also use it anytime we plant ornamentals, as it gives the plants a good head start on the growing season. Last years tomatoes were the most productive that we have had,” he said.

Organic foods are grown in croprotated soil, meaning the soil has had a season to rest and nourish itself with nature’s nutrients before a new crop is planted. Foods not grown through the organic process are chem

All chemical pesticides are cancer causing and can cause birth defects. Nature Conservancy celebrates Earth Day In celebration of Earth Day 2013, the South Carolina Chapter of The Nature Con servancy joins with Nature Conservancy chapters across the world in a Picnic for the Earth on April 20. Picnic for the Earth is The Nature Con servancy’s annual celebra tion of the planet we live on, the food it provides and the people we share it with. Participants are invited to host a picnic on their own, or join in TNCorganized gath erings. In Charleston this year, the South Carolina Chapter will host a Picnic for the Earth on Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. on Wadmalaw Island at the home of Catherine and Frank Middleton. In addition to a delicious picnic featuring locallygrown fare prepared by Chef Caroline Bevon of Caroline’s Market and Cater ing, the day will begin with a nature walk with the conser vancy’s senior conservation ecologist Colette DeGarady and butterf ly expert Lisa Lord. The picnic program will feature a talk by internation ally renowned batik artist, Mary Edna Fraser. Fraser uses the ancient textile art of silk batik to represent coastal landscapes and geographical images, often exploring the human impact and effects of climate change on the landscape. Fraser will show some of her work and speak on “From Local to Global, An Artist’s Inspiration for Con servation.” Reservations for the pic
nic are required, and tickets (suggested donation $100 per person) are available by con tacting Melinda Ottaviano at mottaviano@tnc.org, or 8032549049, extension 35. RiverDogs introduce new ‘Healthy Challenge Tuesdays’ All of us know that we can do a little better at taking care of ourselves. But leave it to the ingenuity of the Charleston RiverDogs to implement a healthier life style while watching the New York Yankees of tomorrow at beautiful Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. This season, the River Dogs, the Class A affiliate of the 27time World Cham pion Yankees, introduce the “Healthy Challenge Tuesday” as the club partners with the Medical University of South
Carolina (MUSC) to make ev ery Tuesday’s game at The Joe a night themed around living a healthier lifestyle. “Tuesday night games will now be geared toward liv ing and promoting a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally,” said River Dogs General Manager Dave Echols. “We all can do a better job of taking care of ourselves, and why not start doing it at a baseball game?” The RiverDogs have teamed up with the MUSC Wellness Center to create an entire new
line of healthy concessions options available through out the season, many made from crops grown on the MUSC Urban Farm located in downtown Charleston. Each Tuesday game will feature a different item from these new healthy selections and be of fered to fans at a discounted rate. Additionally, the club’s re nowned betweeninnings promotions w ill also be health and fitness oriented for Tuesday home games this year. MUSC Wellness staff
