Briones urges campus scribes to be responsible Dr. Melanie Viloria-Briones, founding President of the School Press Advisers Movement (SPAM) Inc., has challenged the campus journalists gathered in a press conference to be responsible in practicing the media profession.
She said that one way of doing that is by making sure that the data and information being gathered and generated should be accurate and has been drawn from credible websites, newspapers, and other sources. “You must first check on the credibility of your sources before believing or putting statements in your article,” she said, adding that the dawn of the internet has caused information explosion. Briones also mentioned that campus journalists should utilize
the social media in the “most responsible manner possible” and in advocating for relevant events such as gender sensitivity. “As a campus journalist, you must take responsibility of the things you click in social media sites,” she said. On the other hand, Prof. Jonathan Sta. Ana, SPAM secretary, encouraged the participants to avoid stereotyping when using the social media. He furthered that they must always be gender sensitive.
Venue is no issue- SPAM panels
“There are no issues concerning why Naga city was chosen to host the 10th annual School Press Advisers Movement because of gender sensitivity issues but primarily, because it (SPAM) Inc.” This was stressed by the SPAM board of panel during a press conference organized as part of the SPAM confab held at the Regent Hotel on October 10. The board of panel composed of Prof Melanie Briones, SPAM President; Prof. Jonathan Sta. Ana, SPAM corporate secretary; and Prof. Lydia S. Villanueva of the Imus Institute Inc. The issue was raised after
some attendants queried on the underlying factors that pushed the SPAM proponents to hold this year’s event in Naga. Among the concerns raised if the decision was based on “gender sensitivity cases in Naga,” and the “fact that Naga is arguably one of the most Catholic city in the country.” In relation to that, Ana mentioned that Naga city was “accidentally chosen” not
is affordable. He furthered that SPAM was just considering the proximity of the place. Villanueva backed this when she said that Naga city is among the key cities of the country, making it suitable and convenient for hosting events like SPAM. She added that the decision has been extensively deliberated and discussed among the SPAM proponents.

2 A Lineage of Challenge

A good start but should be a continuing thrust. The School Press Adviser Movement (SPAM) Inc. culminated with its 10th annual national press conference with gender sensitivity as its central theme. This is a good start considering that gender sensitivity is a looming topic nowadays. Whereas, there is a crucial need to campaign for the recognition and respect of everyone’s rights and duties regardless of their self-proclaimed gender. As a backgrounder, discrimination in the forms of stereotyping, bullying, labelling, and physical assaults continue to hound the women sector and the LGBT community, in particular. The bannering theme of this year’s SPAM confab is then of paramount importance in advocating for equality and equity of every gender in the society. This is no less mediocre but a rallying call as it sounds to the engagement of every campus journalist to take part in this campaign. It is to be noted that campus journalist have the power to espouse changes in the way society view things though the articles that they write, the photos that they take, the caricatures that they engrave, and the words that they say. Therefore, for the SPAM proponents to have chosen gender sensitivity as this year’s theme is worth commending. But the call does not stop there. For gender sensitivity is an issue filled with complexity and interlapping congruence. It entails collaborative efforts from every sectors. Nevertheless, SPAM is able to plant the seeds among campus journalists. Through his event, high hopes is that the participants were able to gain significant insights and knowledge on this matter and that they would apply them in their respective schools and communities.
Advocating for gender sensitivity should therefore, be a continuing pursuit. Hurdles and humps may come along the way but these are challenges we have to wrestle with. There is a need to stir ripples using our, our camera, our caricatures, and our words.

All of us have accounts in media especially in Social Network Sites (SNS). These include facebook ,youtube.snapchat.yahoo.and the likes. These, by all means, are powerful enough in serving as a transmission and a channel in connecting to the world. Needless to say, in promoying gender equality, a boon or a bane.

Like if the said post is seen and we just liked it, we are not helping and we are not contributing to a better change. Also, we have to solicit someone’s stand regarfing the issue if it is really needed.
In conclusion, our choices and acctions are dependent on our own. Like in gender equality, a schorlarly interpretation and a deep-labeled understanding are deemed. It is, all the way, the click of our own.

Women as frontlines of gender sensitivity advocates

Gender makes the world go round.
Whether one is feminine or masculine in the gender role, everybody can wash plates and till the soil. Why can’t we go away from listing the roles of men and women separately to the point that it becomes a millennial challenge? The likes of Melanie Briones, Sonia Sotto, and the likes are the reflection of the women who seek to see gender equality. They educate, empower, and mobilize people to take part as one in facing issues about gender and rallying these for a better result. They are the same people who are willing to take the humps and bumps, the risks and tragedies so that they may see a world where everyone’s right is respected and given due cognizance regardless of gender. “The LGBT community exist in our society a n d therefore, they have rights to be recognized,” enthused Briones during a recently-convened press conference. She noted that there have been both direct and indirect assaults against members of such genders which should not be. The School Press Advisers Movement (SPAM) I n c . which Briones herself co-founded is one avenue which staunchly advocates for gender sensitivity. With the conduct of its 10th annual national press conference, it celebrates and pushes for the need for every campus journalists to take practical and considerable steps akin to the resolution of said issue. In the end, no matter the argument there is, gender is not an issue to contest with. It is not a problem to solve. Nor it is a disease to cure. It is simply a choice to embrace, a role to
Pink does not define, but why does it defiles?
My male teacher, my boyfriends, and my brothers love pink. Not only do they wear pink, they also talk pink, walk pink, and live pink. I do not know why. I do not understand why. Because I hate pin and pink makes me sick. I always attach the colour pink to being weak and girlish. After all, I believe that pink is not for men. It is for women. I used to think that way. But now, it is a different story. One day, my boyfriend in pink saved the day. I thought he was weak and incapable of saving a drowning child at the lake surrounded by masculine men. I could not believe that someone
in pink could be a superhero. True enough, we have always characterized gender based on the ways people dress, the ways they talk, the way they act, and the way they view things. For that, we have come up with different misconceptions and wrong assumptions about the identity and personality of such persons. That should not be. At present, I want to see my boyfriend in pink everyday. Because I realized that pink is not a measure of identification. It is not a means of authentication. It is just a color, no more, no less. Pink just makes my boyfriend think and act.

It was a defining moment for China’s last hope, Chen Long, after he charted his first victory in the Olympics, dismantling Malaysia’s strong bet and three-timebadminton champ Chong Wei Lee, 21-18, 21-19, in the 2016 Badminton Rio Olympics on August 5-21 at Rio de janeiro, Brazil. Desiring to show he was no underdog, Chen Long,
has made a statement earlier in the first set with his sporadic attacks and his tricky placings to subdue Chong Wei Lee in the first set, 21-18. In the second set, Lee showed no cakewalks and lead two-point-deficit against Long in the first half of the set, however, Long retaliated with witty placings and drop shots while unforced errors stung Lee, officially sealing the crown, 21-19.
Chen Long and his quest for gold Sweat blurred Chen’s vision as he tried his best to hit the badminton shuttle cock. With all force, he swang into the air and smashed the white feather-made object that made his opponent exclaim an awe.
Then, everybody cheered with glee and he felt his body being lifted into the air. He won the badminton tournament against a much stronger opponent. He was the Rio de Janeiro Olympics gold medalist. Chen Long started playing badminton at eight years old. He became a national team in 2006 and made his international debut a year later, shortly after winning gold in both boy’s singles and mixed team at the 2007 World Junior Championships. Chen won gold in men’s singles at 2014 and 2015 Badminton World Federation Championships over Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei-although Lee was later stripped of his silver due to a doping scandal. Since 2009, Chen has won three silver medals and three bronze medals in men’s singles at tje annual Asian Championships. He has also won gold in team competitions at the Asian Games, Sudirman Cup and Thomas Cup. Chen Long just proved that it only takes determination to achieve what we reallg want in life.
