Letter from the editor Good businessmen don’t gamble – they invest. These two concepts are considerably different yet have only the finest of lines between them, often blurred by generalizations. Jaschen A gamble is just that: you put your money up, sit back, cross your fingers and hope you get something in return. An investment is something different, however. When you invest, you put everything you have into something, not just your money: you sacrifice something of your own because you really, truly believe in an idea. Then, you do everything you can to make sure that idea succeeds.
You don’t just sit back and hope all goes well. You don’t close your eyes and roll the dice, and you certainly don’t throw support behind something you don’t actually care about. Return on investment is born from faith, hard work and, most of all, passion. In your tenure at Murray State, you have the choice between gambling and investing. You will spend thousands of dollars, hours and tears in the hopes of getting that ever-coveted diploma. You can always choose to sit back, let the money be spent and roll the dice, only hoping for some sort of return. Instead, though, invest. Explore campus, meet people and learn what you’re passionate about – but don’t let it stop there. No matter where you find yourself, don’t be afraid to put in the extra
effort to make sure you, and the people around you, succeed. When it’s all said and done, take a step back, catch up on any missed sleep and admire what you’ve accomplished. You will hear it time and time again, but if you haven’t yet, let me be the first to say: college goes by fast. In Fall 2016, I will begin my junior year. These last two years have been the best of my life, but I am halfway done already, even though I remember my first move-in day perfectly. They say college is what you make of it, but I think it rings especially true for Murray State. Murray State is special. We have a lot to offer, and four years isn’t much time to see every bit of campus life that truly makes up this university’s unique college experience. Cherish every moment you have, knowing that these are the last
chances you may have to learn as much as you can in such little time. So, here is a little list to make your college experience a little better: • Find an organization that suits you, but don’t tie yourself down; • Find the silver lining in every situation; • Go to class; • Stay focused on the end goal • And above all, invest in Murray State. Go Racers!
