Rachel S. Moore President and Chief Executive Officer t’s like “old home week” with my former company, American Ballet Theatre (ABT), returning to The Music Center for an amazing series of performances of the powerful, stunning ballet La Bayadère. I had the privilege of dancing with ABT, and, years later, returned to be its executive director and eventually CEO. I am thrilled to welcome the company back to Los Angeles and to reconnect with many of ABT’s highly talented dancers, who prove time and again why Congress recognized the company as “America’s National Ballet Company” 12 years ago when I was at its helm. There are so many reasons why I’m excited to present ABT’s La Bayadère as the finale of our 17/18 season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. ABT clearly sets the standard in the ballet world, with its dedication to excellence and its incredible roster of dancers. And then there’s the ballet itself, which has a special place in my heart. La Bayadère is set in the high courts of Royal India and showcases the legendary beauty and elegance that only India can claim. I spent my early childhood years in India with my family — Punjabi was my first language — and the country has always called out to me. But, what speaks to me most about La Bayadère is Act Two, “The Kingdom of the Shades,” featuring the corps de ballet in one of the most celebrated excerpts in the classical ballet world. I danced in the corps with ABT, which is where I learned so much about the importance of collaboration and what it means to the reputation of a ballet company to have a strong corps. It was a moment of great pride to be part of that exquisite scene as 32 dancers, all dressed in white tutus, grace the stage. Natalia Makarova, who first staged this scene for ABT in 1974 said, “In this ballet, the corps de ballet is the leading role, and each member of it should feel like a ballerina. Yet, the corps must always work together as a unified whole; they must dance and breathe as one.” Here, the corps, often seen as a backdrop for the principal dancers, is the star. What an honor it is for me to bring ABT’s La Bayadère, with its exquisite cast, to The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage for the first time ever! I sincerely hope you enjoy the performance. We are excited about the companies included in our 18/19 dance season, which launches this October with our presentation of Company Wayne McGregor’s Autobiography. I hope you will join me for a fearless, dynamic series of dance performances presented only by The Music Center. As always, I value your support and welcome your ideas. Warmly,

RACHEL S. MOORE PRESIDENT AND CEO THE MUSIC CENTER

PROGRAM

BALLET IN THREE ACTS Choreography by NATALIA MAKAROVA, after MARIUS PETIPA Music by LUDWIG MINKUS, specially arranged by JOHN LANCHBERY Production conceived and directed by NATALIA MAKAROVA Scenery by PIERLUIGI SAMARITANI Costumes designed by THEONI V. ALDREDGE Lighting by TOSHIRO OGAWA Production Coordinator DINA MAKAROFF

SYNOPSIS

Set in the Royal India of the past, La Bayadère is a story of eternal love, mystery, fate, vengeance and justice. The ballet relates the drama of a temple dancer (bayadère), Nikiya, who is loved by Solor, a noble warrior. She is also loved by the High Brahmin, but does not love him in return, as she does Solor.

ACT I, SCENE 1 Outside the temple, in the Sacred Forest

The High Brahmin, priests, and temple dancers are celebrating the Indian Ritual of Fire. Nikiya, the most beautiful of the bayadères, has been chosen to be consecrated the lead temple dancer. The High Brahmin declares his love for Nikiya but is rejected by her. Nikiya meets secretly with Solor later that evening. They dance together and swear eternal love over the Sacred Fire but are discovered by the jealous High Brahmin, who vows to kill Solor.

SCENE 2 A room in the palace

The Radjah has decided to reward Solor’s valor and decrees that the warrior will marry his daughter, Gamzatti. Gamzatti falls in love with Solor’s portrait, and when they meet, he is overwhelmed by her beauty. Even though he has sworn eternal love to Nikiya, he cannot defy the wishes of the Radjah and agrees to marry Gamzatti. The High Brahmin informs the Radjah of Nikiya and Solor’s secret love, hoping the Radjah will do away with Solor. Instead, the Radjah decides to kill Nikiya. This conversation is overheard by Gamzatti, who summons Nikiya to her rooms and attempts to bribe Nikiya to give up Solor. Refusing, Nikiya frantically attempts to kill Gamzatti. Nikiya flees, and Gamzatti swears to destroy her.

SCENE 3 The garden of the palace

At the betrothal of Solor and Gamzatti, Nikiya is commanded to dance. Gamzatti presents her with a basket of flowers that Nikiya believes to be from Solor, and which conceals a deadly snake. Nikiya is bitten, and when Solor leaves with Gamzatti, she refuses the proffered antidote and dies.

INTERMISSION ACT II The tent of Solor

Solor, grief-stricken and under the influence of opium, dreams of being reunited with Nikiya in the Kingdom of the Shades. Awakening, he realizes that he must prepare to marry Gamzatti.

INTERMISSION ACT III The temple

The vision of Nikiya remains with Solor as the wedding ceremony begins at the Sacred Temple. As Solor and Gamzatti say their vows and are blessed by the High Brahmin, the vengeance of the gods is unleashed, and the temple and all the celebrants are destroyed. Nikiya and Solor are once again united in eternal love.

PRODUCTION HISTORY

La Bayadère, Act II (The Kingdom of the Shades) was first performed in the West by the Leningrad‑Kirov Ballet in 1961. Rudolf Nureyev, with choreography after Petipa, produced the Kingdom of the Shades scene for The Royal Ballet in 1963. Both the Bolshoi Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada perform this extract from the complete ballet.

Natalia Makarova first staged The Kingdom of the Shades scene for American Ballet Theatre in 1974 and it received its premiere at the State Theater in New York City on July 3 of that year, danced by Cynthia Gregory (Nikiya) and Ivan Nagy (Solor). Makarova subsequently produced and choreographed the complete version (in three acts) for American Ballet Theatre in 1980, and the Western World Premiere of the complete ballet was given on May 21 of that year. The dancers were Natalia Makarova (Nikiya), Anthony Dowell (Solor) and Cynthia Harvey (Gamzatti). The music for La Bayadère is used by arrangement with Theodore Presser Company, agents for Editions Mario Bois, publisher and copyright owner. This production is generously sponsored by an endowed gift from Drs. Philip and Marjorie Gerdine.

THE DOROTHY B. CHANDLER LEGACY SOCIETY

A LEGACY DARES TO INSPIRE

The Dorothy B. Chandler Legacy Society honors and recognizes individuals who express their commitment to the arts by including The Music Center in their estate plans or creating an endowed fund. The society provides opportunities for members to find camaraderie with others who share their passion and love of the arts at special programs and events. Perhaps the greatest benefit in becoming a member is the knowledge that you have established an enduring legacy — a lasting heritage for the community that will continue to touch lives for generations to come.

WAYS TO GIVE

• Include a bequest in your will or living trust; • Create an estate note, an irrevocable pledge against one’s estate; • Create an endowed fund; • Establish a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust; and • Designate The Music Center as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy. If you have made a provision for The Music Center in your estate plans, or would like to learn more about the Legacy Society, contact Dasha Thomas at (213) 972-4319.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES Support from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors plays an invaluable role in the successful operation of The Music Center.
