SEARCH ANNOUNCING THE 61ST ANNUAL L.A. COUNTY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION! Posted by Jeff Slayton I Dec 7, 2020 CLICK HERE TO EMAIL US OR SU BSCRI BE1

On Thursday, December 24, 2020 the 61st annual L.A. County Holiday celebration will stream online, with an encore performance on Fnday, December 25, 2020. Everyone who has enjoyed this event in the past, will of course miss seeing all the talented artists in-person, but The Music Center was not deterred and rose to the challenge by offering Uplifting Performances that feature interviews and debut performances, as well as the exciting three hour Music and Dance Spectacular which has become a Los Angeles tradition. One silver lining is that by going virtual the L.A. County Holiday Celebration will reach an even wider audience. As stated in The Music Center press release: "A production of The Music Center and PBS SoCal in association with CDK Productions, the Emmy Award-winning holiday show features choirs, music ensembles and dance companies representing the many cultures of Los Angeles. Highlighting the county's rich creative diversity, the broadcast will also include five mini documentaries featuring artists from different neighborhoods as well as performances on location at key landmarks, including Korean Bell of Friendship in San Pedro and Angel's Point in Elysian Park. Given COVID restrictions as outlined by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and the commitment to keeping artists and the public safe from community transmission, the performance is presented without a live audience this year."

Filmed on location at both The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Jerry Moss Plaza and at sites around Los Angeles County, the three-hour showcase of 22 LA-based artists will air on PBS SoCal starting at 3:00 p.m. PST on Christmas Eve (December 24, 2020) and simultaneously stream on pbssocal.org/holidaycelebration, kcet.org and Holidaycelebration.org. PBS SoCal will air an encore presentation that evening at 7:00 p.m. PST; KCET will rebroadcast the show on Christmas Day at noon PST. The L.A. County Holiday Celebration has long helped to bring thousands of people hours of uplifting and cheerful entertainment by local artist from a wide diversity of backgrounds and cultures. Rachel S. Moore, president and CEO of The Music Center said that with what we all have been through for the past eight or nine months, that she is excited to partner with PBS SoCal and CDK Productions in order to continue this time-honored tradition which began in 1959.

'Working with the same Emmy Award-winning team led by the program's 25-year producer and director Kenneth Shapiro, we have created a vibrant new format for 2020 that also features artist interviews and county landscapes. This broadcast and streaming event truly is a 'celebration' of Los Angeles-of resiliency and of community-that we all can take pride in from the comforts of our homes." Moore said.

L.A.'s Musica Angelica Streams Concert of Young Baroque Composers Tim Higgins and !he SF Symphony Brass Do It Their Way Southern California Brass Consortium I Credit Karen Case Conductor and teacher Hector Salazar may not be having the best year of his life, but he seems to be weathering the pandemic with unusual sangfroid. Retired from his full-time job at El Camino College, he has not slowed down, and the shutdown has just brought out more determination in his character. His year culminates with the Southern California Brass Consortium, which he founded, playing a leading role in the 61st Annual L.A County Holiday Celebration. Presented in conjunction with The Music Center in downtown Los Angeles and filmed on location at both The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Jerry Moss Plaza and at sites around Los Angeles County, the three-hour Holiday Celebration spotlights 22 L.A. based groups and will air on PBS SoCal starting at 3 p.m. PST on Dec. 24, and simultaneously stream on pbssocal.org/holidaycelebration, kcet.org, and holidaycelebration.org. Acts include Latin folk band Cull.ao, Hawaiian music from Daniel Ho Trio and Halau Keali 'i o Nalani with special guest Tia Carrere, the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, Jung lm Lee Korean Dance Academy, Pacifico Dance Company, Gospel choir Praizum led by Lorenzo Johnson, Infinite Flow -An Inclusive Dance Company (comprised of dancers with and without disabilities), and Salazar's Brass Consortium, which has taken part twice since 2013, when the group was founded.

The SCBC, says Salazar, is neither a brass quintet nor a traditional brass band on the English model. Its 26 players include a harpist and, of course, percussion (useful for marches and such). The band's repertoire is often arranged from within, by members such as trumpeter Drew Ninmer and also Drew's brother, Scott Ninmer (not a member of the band), who has arranged and composed for a wide list of industry professionals and groups (classical and not) and who is currently staff arranger for The President's Own" United States Marine Band. For the big broadcast, SCBC was, of course, recorded separately and their contribution will include the Advent hymn o Come, 0 Come, Emmanuel," plus a medley of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" that was arranged by legendary Hollywood composer Jerry Fielding. The group will also lead the annual finale in Drew Ninmer's arrangement of "Silent Night," featuring many of the show's musicians and dancers singing together.

Lorenzo Johnson & Praizum plan to harness the heart and soul of these times through music at the 61st Annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration. Filmed on location at both The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Jerry Moss Plaza and at sites around Los Angeles County, the three-hour showcase of 22 LA-based artists will air on PBS SoCal starting at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and simultaneously stream on pbssocal.org/holidaycelebration, kcet.org and Holidaycelebration.org. PBS SoCal will air an encore presentation of the celebration Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. and KCET will rebroadcast the show on Christmas Day at noon. Under the direction of Johnson, Praizum, with chorists from churches across Southern California, will perform the hymn, "Only Believe" followed by the holiday classic, "Silver Bells." A production of The Music Center and PBS SoCal in association with CDK Productions, the Emmy Award-winning holiday show features choirs, music ensembles and dance companies representing the many cultures of Los Angeles. Highlighting the county's rich creative diversity, the broadcast will also include five mini documentaries featuring artists from different neighborhoods as well as performances on location at key landmarks, including Korean Bell of Friendship in San Pedro and Angel's Point in Elysian Park. Given COVID restrictions as outlined by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and the commitment to keeping artists and the public safe from community transmission, the performance is presented without a live audience this year. ''The holiday season is about spreading joy and goodwill to all, which is so important this year, and we'll do that with a special broadcast of beautiful and uplifting performances that showcase the talents and diversity of Los Angeles." said Rachel S. Moore, president and CEO, The Music Center. ''This broadcast and streaming event truly is a 'celebration' of Los Angeles-of resiliency and of community-that we all can take pride in from the comforts of our homes." Yuko Mabuchi is thrilled to be part of this year's LA County Holiday Celebration, an event she has loved for years. Yuko lives in Pasadena and spends a lot of time in South Pasadena, which she loves, especially her favorite local Japanese restaurant, Ail

nr find

the

neighborhood very peaceful and I find everything I need around here", she says. Yuko initially came to the US from Japan in 2010 to do a jazz workshop in Alhambra and it was

then she began her love affair with all of the San Gabriel Valley and ultimately decided to

move here in 2015.

Yuko started playing classical piano at age 4, in her hometown of Fukui, Japan. Her mother is a piano teacher and as a child she says, "I was drawn to American music on the radio, listening to jazz and latin music. My father played American R&B recor ds in the home and she says, "I felt it had a lot of rhythm, it was easy to listen to and made me feel uplifted!" T hen she heard the music of Canadian jazz virtuoso Oscar Peterson, Jamaican jazz pianist Monty Alexander, and the great Miles Davis and that was it. She says, "I wanted to learn jazz." By this time she was a teenager and after graduating high school, she began attending a jazz music school in Kyoto. After the workshop in Alhambra , she returned in 2013 and it was then she met bass player Del Atkins and drummer Bobby Breton and the Yuko Mabuchi Trio was born. They soon received an offer to play their first concert at Pasadena's Levitt Pavilion and have been playing at LA's top venues ever since.

"'To me, Jazz music is the most exciting music in the world," Yuko enthuses, "it is fascinating, free and fun! In jazz I can express myself in many ways. It's not Just playing music that somebody wrote. We are always creating while we are playing."

This will be the first time The Yuko Mabuchi Trio will be in the LA County Holiday Celebration. "I have always wanted to be a part of it ever since Arst seeing it on YouTube years ago," explains Yuko. For the performance, Yuko tells us she arranged a special Christmas medley especially for this event. First up will be the classic "Little Drummer Boy" by Kathleen Davis, followed by a contemporary "Christmas Time is Here" by Vince Guaraldi, and finally the Latin "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano, all tied together in a jazz style with improvisation. Yoku is also proud to be wearing a traditional kimono for the performance created by her stylist, Toshiko Okawa.

The Annu al LA County Celebration knew that art is essential and therefore has beautifully pivoted to bring us the performances in a whole new way. Filmed on location at both The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Jerry Moss Plaza and at sites arou nd Los Angeles County, the beloved three-hour showcase of 22 l.A.-based artists will air on PBS SoCal starting at 3:00 p.m. It was the first time most of these artists were able to perform together since the beginning of the pandemic, making for a joyful reunion and very special performances.

"The holiday season is abou t spreading joy and goodwill to all, which is so important this year, and we'll do that with a special broadcast of beautiful and uplifting performances that showcase the talents and diversity of Los Angeles," said Rachel S. Moore, president and CEO, The Music Center. "Working with the same Emmy Award-winning team led by the program's 25-year producer and director Kenneth Shapiro, we have created a vibrant new format for 2020 that also features artist interviews and county landscapes. This broadcast and streaming event truly is a 'celebration' of Los Angeles-of resiliency and of community -that we all can take pride in from the comforts of our homes."

Returning favorites include Latin folk band Cufiao, a Hawaiian celebration featuring Daniel Ho Trio and HiJlau Keali'i o NiJlani with special guest Tia Carrere, the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, Jung Im Lee Korean Dance Academy, folklorico troupe Pacifico Dance Company, Gospel choir Praizum led by Lorenzo Johnson and Infinite Flow - An Inclusive Dance Company, a professional company of dancers with and without disabil ities that uses dance as a catalyst to inspire inclusivity and innovation. But there was likely a question in many Angelenos' minds when it came to the annual LA County Holiday Celebration, the cultural spectacular that's swirled across the stage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for several years. Would the swirling come to an abrupt ha lt in 2020? Would the voices, violins, and Christmas bells

fall silent due to the pandemic response?

In a word, no. For the NoE!l•nice extravaganza, an annual gift to the city from the LA County Board of Supervisors, would still go forward, even as the specifics were altered to keep the celebration safe for all.

This means there won't be a live audience in 2020, and the segments are pre•recorded But do count on seeing, from home, a whole merry cavalcade of cultural groups in joyful performance, including Ballet Folklorico de Los Angeles, the Jung Im Lee Korean Dance Academy, the barbershop quartet Noteable, the Southern California Brass Consortium, and several other favorites. The af ternoon of Dec. 24 is when all of this music and movement will find merr y connection from afar. Can't watch it on PBS SoCal or stream it on HolidayCelebration.org? There'll be an encore performance on KCET on Dec. 25 at noon PST.
