DANCE AT THE MUSIC CENTER
An Associate Company of Joyce Theater Productions
PART OF
2017/2018
Note from the
PRESIDENT & CEO e were honored last year to be one of only three performing arts organizations selected to participate in the Getty’s far-reaching initiative, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. With that endorsement and the support of major grants from the Getty Foundation, The Music Center set out to explore the incredible art of Cuba with the goal of providing Angelenos a taste of that country’s dynamic arts scene. The result, The Music Center’s Cuba: Antes, Ahora / Then, Now, brought Cuban and Cuban American artists together for an exploration of music, visual art and dance like Los Angeles has never seen. We cap off the past few days of celebration with our presentation of the powerful work of Havana-based Malpaso Dance Company, which is making its Los Angeles debut as part of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. With our commitment to advancing the role of women in the dance field, I am particularly proud that Malpaso will perform two pieces by female choreographers, one of them a new work commissioned by The Music Center with lead support by Center Dance Arts and choreographed by Emmynominated and So You Think You Can Dance favorite, Sonya Tayeh. Working with Malpaso, Tayeh brings out the angst many of us face in the world today, addressing it with the raw emotionality of movement that only this company can deliver. I am also pleased to continued to support of the work of Aszure Barton, whom we presented this past August at the Ford Theatres as part of The Music Center On Location ™. Now, we bring Barton’s work performed by Malpaso to The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, featuring her own take on what happens to one’s soul

when faced with emotional circumstances. Many of these Cuba-based artists survived one of the worst hurricanes in modern history with the onslaught of Hurricane Irma, which was followed by heavy rain related to other storms in the Caribbean. Their resiliency in the face of these extraordinarily challenging circumstances cannot be understated. We are grateful they remained committed to traveling to the U.S. to perform for our audiences. I hope you will join us this December when we bring back one of the sweetest holiday traditions to Los Angeles with the world premiere of an all-new George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® by Miami City Ballet. I know that attending this iconic ballet — now with all-new sets and costumes — always set the tone for the holidays for me and my family, and we hope that Angelenos will rediscover that experience. We have worked to make these performances very special for Los Angeles with the involvement of locally based children’s groups from Colburn School, the Gabriella Foundation’s everybody dance! program and the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, who will take part in the performances. Our annual gala, The Music Center’s Winter Soirée, takes place on opening night, December 7. It will be a magical night and a delightful series of performances. As always, I value your support and welcome your ideas. Warmly,

PROGRAM
MALPASO DANCE COMPANY
In less than five short years since its establishment in 2012, Malpaso Dance Company has already become one of the most sought after Cuban dance companies with a growing international profile. Emphasizing a collaborative creative process, Malpaso is committed to working with top international choreographers while also nurturing new voices in Cuban choreography. The company tours with 11 dancers and is led by its original three founders: resident choreographer and Artistic Director Osnel Delgado, Executive Director Fernando Sáez, and dancer and co-founder Daileidys Carrazana. An Associate Company of Joyce Theater Productions, Malpaso — together with The Joyce — has commissioned original works from a number of prominent North American choreographers including Ron K. Brown (Why You Follow), Trey McIntyre (Under Fire) and — most recently — acclaimed Canadian choreographer Aszure Barton. Touted as “totally engrossing” (Palm Beach Arts Paper), Barton's work Indomitable Waltz was supported with a production and touring grant from The National Dance Project and made its world premiere in Havana, Cuba, in Fall 2016. The company has also recently premiered Dreaming of Lions, a new full-length commission choreographed by Osnel Delgado, featuring an original score composed by Grammy award-winning, Cuban-American composer Arturo O’Farrill. The work was inspired by the classic Hemingway novella The Old Man and the Sea and had its U.S. premiere at Duke Performances in Durham, NC in February 2017 followed by a New York City premiere at The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater.
