Philharmonic Vocabulary

Orchestra: A group of musicians playing instruments belonging to string, woodwind, brass and percussion families.

Conductor: The director of a musical group. The musicians are his “instruments” and he is “playing” them.

Composer: A person who creates musical works.

Winds or Woodwinds: The section of the orchestra with “wind” blown instruments that are not brass (clarinet, oboe, flute and saxophone).

Strings: The section of the orchestra with stringed instruments (violin, cello, viola and bass).

Brass: The section of the orchestra with “wind” blown instruments that are brass (trumpet, trombone and tuba).

Percussion: Instruments that derive their sound from being shaken or struck (drums, cymbals, triangles, gongs and chimes).

Concerto: Musical composition for one featured performer.
