T HE MUSIC CENTER and THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Adès & McGregor: A Dance Collaboration, an exclusive co-presentation by Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Our two organizations are thrilled to have served as the catalysts for powerful new music and innovative dance works, including dance world premieres by two titans of contemporary art – choreographer Wayne McGregor and composer-conductor Thomas Adès – performed by The Royal Ballet and Company Wayne McGregor and enhanced with the set design expertise of celebrated artist Tacita Dean. What an incredible way to end the 16th season of The Music Center’s dance series, as well as to conclude the LA Phil’s performances at The Music Center during the orchestra’s Centennial season!

From RACHEL S. MOORE President & CEO, The Music Center We are honored to be part of an unprecedented collaboration in the dance and music world and to join with our colleagues at the LA Phil, The Royal Ballet and Company Wayne McGregor to bring you two unforgettable evenings. You will experience two world dance premieres of Wayne McGregor’s choreography, one a co-commission by The Music Center and the LA Phil, and one choreographed to music co-commissioned by the LA Phil and The Royal Ballet. We launched and now conclude our dance season celebrating Wayne McGregor, one of the most in-demand choreographers in the world today. His work is both highly physical and dramatic, pushing the dancers incredibly hard to deliver what is often surprising, yet highly engaging work, which has significantly expanded the contemporary ballet canon. For these performances, we are honored to welcome the LA Phil back to The Music Center‘s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the first time since the orchestra moved to The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2003. While dance world premieres of this stature are few and far between, particularly on the West Coast, The Music Center, the LA Phil and The Royal Ballet are committed to advancing the work of these trailblazing artists, and the performing arts fields, more generally. I know you will have an unforgettable evening.

From SIMON WOODS CEO, LA Phil The Los Angeles Philharmonic is proud to have long-standing relationships with some of the world’s greatest artists, and among these, there are few we treasure as much as our long-time friend and collaborator Thomas Adès. Tom is one of the most influential musicians of the 21st century and an individual for whom the overused word “genius” truly does apply. His Inferno, the first act of what will eventually be a full-length ballet, was commissioned for our Centennial celebrations. It premiered at Walt Disney Concert Hall this past May, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, to rave reviews and ecstatic audience reactions. We are delighted to be returning to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to bring this piece to life, and for these historic performances, which showcase the strength and talents of two incredible dance companies, our renowned orchestra and multiple-award-winning creative artists. It’s a bold, ambitious collaboration, which is everything we should expect from our great companies on Grand Ave., bringing some of the best and brightest artists of our time to Los Angeles.

The Philip Johnson building that houses the David H. Koch Theater and is home to the New York City Ballet felt like a natural place to look for inspiration. Johnson was not only a great friend of George Balanchine and an influential architect, he also championed the architects of the Bauhaus, like Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, in the U.S. I am fascinated by that Bauhaus art period and by abstract minimalist painters like Josef Albers and Barnett Newman. The visual context for the piece has been greatly informed by the minimalists’ notion of simplicity and color theory. I am a big fan of Thomas Adès, a composer who for me is a 21st-century Stravinsky. His Violin Concerto, fiendishly difficult to play, has this implicit sense of strangeness in the score. It is full of irregularities and unexpected events, structures that don’t quite obey the rules, musical events slightly out of sequence, circular patterns that collide and divert your attention—in other words, the score is full of outliers." —Copyright © 2014 by Wayne McGregor

LIVING ARCHIVE: AN AI PERFORMANCE EXPERIMENT

30 Minutes DANCE WORLD PREMIERE

Co-commissioned by The Music Center and Los Angeles Philharmonic, produced by Studio Wayne McGregor. Direction: Wayne McGregor Choreography: Wayne McGregor, in collaboration with the dancers Music: Thomas Adès’ In Seven Days In Seven Days music commissioned by: Los Angeles Philharmonic, 2008 Video Installation: Ben Cullen Williams Lighting Consultant: Lucy Carter Dancers: Company Wayne McGregor AI choreography tool developed in collaboration with: Google Arts & Culture Lab

In collaboration with Google’s Arts and Culture Lab, Studio Wayne McGregor has developed the Living Archive — an artificially intelligent choreographic tool, trained on hundreds of hours of video from the choreographer’s extensive back catalogue, as well as solo material created on each of the current companies. From what it has learned about the individual physical styles of an array of bodies dancing McGregor’s choreography, the system is able to respond to any new movement phrase by suggesting multiple original possibilities for the next phrase. Through swift real-time dialogue between wo/man and machine, the Living Archive unleashes the creative movement potential stored at molecular levels within former works, amplifying the spectrum of possibility for choreographic decisionmaking and bringing dancers of the present into contact with traces of their predecessors. Ben Cullen Williams’ design manipulates abstract visualizations of the AI generated choreography into a suspended video installation, which explores ideas of dance as code and vice versa. A variation on the Creation theme that inspires Ades’ In Seven Days, the unique movement vocabulary and visual language for this performance experiment is generated solely with this strange and elemental new body.

THE DANTE PROJECT PART 1 [INFERNO]

46 Minutes DANCE WORLD PREMIERE

Inferno commissioned as a creative partnership between Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, The Royal Ballet and the LA Phil with generous support from the Lenore S. and Bernard A. Greenberg Fund. Choreography: Wayne McGregor Music: Thomas Adès’ Inferno Design: Tacita Dean Lighting Design: Lucy Carter and Simon Bennison Dramaturgy: Uzma Hameed Assistant to the Choreographer: Amanda Eyles Rehearsal Assistant: Davide Di Pretoro Dancers: The Royal Ballet “In the middle of the journey of our life, I found myself in a dark wood, for the straight path was lost.” Thrown into crisis by the cruel experience of exile, Dante is driven to undertake a spiritual pilgrimage through the afterlife. In Inferno, he descends through the circles of hell to its cold center, furthest from the light of God, where Satan awaits. Guided and comforted by the Roman epic poet Virgil, Dante communes with the shades of this psychic netherworld — souls eternally trapped in myriad states of sin and retribution. Known in English as The Divine Comedy, Dante’s medieval Italian epic The Commedia was a bestseller in its own time, and, over the centuries, has inspired responses from countless artists and in multiple forms. This premiere is the first part of a ballet triptych mirroring the Commedia’s three famous cantiche: Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso. The full work will open next year at The Royal Ballet’s home in Covent Garden.

The extensive repertory of The Royal Ballet follows a unique trajectory from 19th-century classics to the singular legacy of works by Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton and Principal Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan and the compelling new canon of work by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor, Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon and Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. Along with innovative commissions and choreographic initiatives across the main stage and Linbury Theatre and strong links with The Royal Ballet School, the Company continues to refresh and surprise.

MESSAGE FROM THE ROYAL BALLET We are delighted to return to Los Angeles for the first time in 24 years with two programmes here at the Music Center that celebrate the vitality and virtuosity of dancers with The Royal Ballet and Company Wayne McGregor. Our visit includes the electrically charged anticipation of two world premieres. The first programme presented during our tour was Mayerling by Kenneth MacMillan, Principal Choreographer of The Royal Ballet and a visionary creative of 20 th-century ballet. His legacy is contrasted with the compelling work of our current Resident Choreographer, Wayne McGregor, in an unprecedented collaboration with two other forces of the contemporary arts scene, composer-conductor Thomas Adès and artist Tacita Dean. It is thrilling to come together with the LA Phil, Company Wayne McGregor and the rest of the stellar creative team — Ben Cullen Williams, Moritz Junge, Lucy Carter, Simon Bennison and Uzma Hameed — for this exclusive presentation. We convey special thanks to Aud Jebsen for her incredibly generous support of the 2018/19 Royal Ballet Season, and to Susan A. Olde OBE for her vision and philanthropy towards The Royal Ballet tour to Los Angeles. We extend enormous gratitude to Rachel Moore and her team at The Music Center. I would like to give particular thanks to the American Friends of Covent Garden, John McGinn and Cary Davis, Beth Madison, Nancy Peck Green, Sherry and Michael Guthrie, John G. Turner and Jerry G. Fischer, and Alan G. Levin. And my thanks also to our most loyal Royal Ballet supporters in the United Kingdom who have made this tour possible: Ian and Helen Andrews, David Campain, Deborah Cowles, Dr. Gwen Lewis and Dr. Jonathan Holliday, Lady Pitman, Rebecca Rogers, Kristina Rogge, Janine Roxborough Bunce, Eric Tomsett, Adrienne Waterfield, and Peter Harrison and Fiona Willis.

CENTER DANCE ARTS CENTER DANCE ARTS AND ME This is the second of a series of notes from Center Dance Arts (CDA) members. Do you know the difference between an arabesque and a cabriole? I don’t. So, you might ask, “Why does this philistine support Center Dance Arts (CDA)?” The answer is simple: I love to watch dance — its grace and beauty, the fluidity of its gravity-defying leaps and the marriage of music and muscle. It is mesmerizing, and when it is performed at The Music Center by world-class dance companies like The Royal Ballet, it is absolutely thrilling. The often outrageously dressed youngish audience is not often what you’ll see at other types of performances. Here, rules are to be broken, chances taken and audiences appreciated. And there is no better way to support dance in Los Angeles than by joining CDA. The perks are great (special ticket exchange process, members-only salons), and the members are friendly, reflecting the openness of this unique art form. So join me as a CDA member, and together we’ll learn all about arabesques, cabrioles and perhaps even an entrechat or two. * Resident Fellows The Los Angeles Philharmonic string section utilizes revolving seating on a systematic basis. Players listed alphabetically change seats periodically. In those sections where there are two principals the musicians share the position equally and are listed in order of length of service. The musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic are represented by Professional Musicians Local 47, AFM.

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC Now in its Centennial season, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has redefined what an orchestra can be. Under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel since 2009, it presents an inspiring array of music through a commitment to foundational works and adventurous explorations. At home and abroad, the LA Phil — recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras — leads the way in groundbreaking and diverse programming that demonstrates the orchestra’s artistry and vision, on stage and in the community. The LA Phil performs or presents more than 250 concerts annually at its two iconic venues: Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. During its winter season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with approximately 165 performances, the LA Phil creates festivals, artist residencies and other thematic programs designed to enhance the audience’s experience of orchestral music. Since 1922, its summer home has been the world-famous Hollywood Bowl, host to the finest artists from all genres of music. The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles extends far beyond the Concert Hall, with wide-ranging performances in the schools, churches and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its influential and multifaceted education initiatives is Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema. Through YOLA, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music instruction and leadership training to nearly 1,200 students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders and agents of change. The orchestra also undertakes tours, including regular visits to New York, Paris, and Tokyo, among other cities. The Philharmonic is now the International Orchestral Partner at London’s Barbican Centre. The orchestra’s very first tour was in 1921, and the Philharmonic has toured every season since 1969/70. The LA Phil has a substantial catalog of concerts available online, including the first full-length classical music video released on iTunes. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a millionaire and amateur musician. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, 10 renowned conductors have served in that capacity: Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929); Artur Rodziński (1929-1933); Otto Klemperer (1933-1939); Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956); Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959); Zubin Mehta (1962-1978); Carlo Maria Giulini (19781984); André Previn (1985-1989); Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009); and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present).
