Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center

Note from our President & CEO

RACHEL S. MOORE

2019/2020

BOARD OF DIRECTORS OFFICERS

For many in the arts, Fall is the time for the launch of new seasons, “mustsee” exhibitions, shows worth traveling for and exciting things to see, hear and do. While that is indeed the case for us as we launch the 17th season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center with the Mariinsky Ballet in George Balanchine’s Jewels, our summer has been anything but quiet! In fact, nearly 20,000 people danced the summer nights away under the stars from JuneAugust with The Music Center’s Dance DTLA, enjoying Bollywood, K-Pop, Salsa, Cumbia, Disco, Tango and more. While we launched Dance DTLA in beautiful Grand Park, we concluded the series on the all-new Music Center Plaza — the Plaza for All — which reopened with a major Labor Day weekend celebration. All of us at The Music Center very much appreciate the generosity of our many donors who supported our Plaza campaign and are thrilled we will be able to bring the Plaza to life with free and low-cost programs. Thanks to a $12 million donation from Cindy Miscikowski, our new board chair, and the Ring-Miscikowski/The Ring Foundation, we have critical seed funding for our new TMC Arts Fund, which will help us broaden access to the arts for all communities of Los Angeles through public programs, education and dance. We are so grateful to Cindy for her support and eagerly anticipate more opportunities to engage with audiences, participants, visitors, donors, guests, artists and community partners as we strive to deepen the cultural lives of all in Los Angeles County. That enthusiasm carries over to the “main stage” of The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the incredible performances by the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra of Jewels. What an honor it is to present this company, which features some of the world’s most exquisite and athletic dancers, with a powerful performance of a neoclassical work, a signature style of the inimitable George Balanchine. Jewels, considered the first great three-act abstract ballet, is both elegant and accessible, with three different approaches to the genre: French in “Emeralds,” American in “Rubies” and Imperial Russian in “Diamonds.” This is world-class ballet at its best, where the focus on movement and musicality of Balanchine’s choreography has the special imprint of the Mariinsky; this is a prime example of our commitment to offering Southern California audiences the chance to experience some of the world’s top performers and works they won’t see on any other stage in Los Angeles. This dance season is both masterful and daring, with performances by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater featuring new works and the muchbeloved Revelations (March 18–20, 2020); the transformative and emotional performances of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch with Palermo Palermo (April 17–19, 2020); the agility and technical strength of Cuba’s leading contemporary dance company Malpaso (May 15-17, 2020) and the incomparable Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company with Giselle (July 24-26, 2020). I hope you will join us for these wonderful companies and follow our plans for the new Plaza at musiccenter.org as we offer more ways for more people to engage in the arts. As always, I value your support and welcome your ideas. Warmly,

ABOUT

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Jewels is one of Balanchine’s best-loved ballets in Russia. It has long been one of the choreographer’s calling cards at the Mariinsky Theatre, as well as a core part of the Mariinsky Theatre’s repertoire in the eyes of the world. The culmination of this ballet is the foundation of the Russian classical school — something very close to Russian dancers — which ultimately produced the American Balanchine, the greatest choreographer of the 20th century.

ABOUT

As we know, George Balanchine  —  born Georgy Melitonovich Balanchivadze in St. Petersburg  — trained at the famous Theatre School (today the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet), worked at the Mariinsky Theatre and, only in 1924, did he emigrate, first for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and later the unchartered world of American ballet. A citizen of the world, he easily integrated into new cultural expanses, though he retained an incredibly high regard for his homeland; it was this particular blend of classical training with free and modernist thinking that formed the basis for his art. Jewels is also an example of where his own legacy meets with the Russian school. At the same time, this ballet is not entirely typical for Balanchine himself. In 1967, Balanchine, who for 30 years had been consistently leading the public toward the concept of pure dance, elevated the art to such a level of conditionality that exists in music alone and staged a ballet about precious stones in the spirit of the most archaic possible allegories! Balanchine shared the ballet’s inspiration of how Nathan Milstein, his friend and a great violinist, introduced him to the jeweler Claude Arpels and how he admired his collection of “stunning stones,” resolving to stage a ballet “about gemstones” without delay; to be more precise, Balanchine created a ballet with costumes adorned with emeralds, rubies and diamonds set to music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. He innocently added “I’m a Georgian, I love beauty!” Balanchine always met with a sly smile the idea that he rejected the idea of a fourth part (sapphires and Schoenberg) merely because “it is hard to reproduce the color of sapphires on the stage.” The famed choreographer adored such mysterious trifles and the frivolous tone in which he deliberately simplified the essence of his dazzling works. He did this in all probability, because he did not think it necessary to express it in words. But if ever he had to supply some written commentary, he would compare the work of a choreographer to the art of a master chef and applied a deliberately naive intonation to the vital synopsis of his ballets. He wrote, for example, that “then comes a variation of the female soloist to light and elevated music. This is followed by the dance of another female soloist.” Or, as in another case, “Stravinsky and I just decided to use this music, arranging it in a suitable manner for the lead pair of dancers, the female soloist and the corps de ballet of men and women.” All of these gemstones and their colors as well as the symbolism connected to them prompted Balanchine to create a virtuoso work that is incredibly complex in terms of form and extremely light in terms of its feel. Jewels consists of three parts  —  green (emeralds), red (rubies) and white (diamonds). Here, Balanchine, as never before, embraced the possibilities afforded by the three-part format: the three pieces of music by three uniquely different composers are so independent that they are not infrequently performed as individual ballets, yet, at the same, time they are united by a common idea that can only be expressed fully when performed together. Even the costumes — long tutus of the romantic era in “Emeralds,” short skirts in “Rubies” and classical tutus in “Diamonds” — are all linked together and have numerous strata of ideas: three cultures, three ballet schools, three images and three kinds of ballerinas.

Balanchine wrote about “Emeralds” that if this part depicts anything at all then it could be his own memories of France: “A France of elegance, comfort, fashion and perfume...” There is, however, neither comfort nor fashion there, though there is a delicate fabric of dance: dance responds to the indistinct calls from Fauré’s music and, apropos, is reminiscent of Russian classical ballets. Who knows? Perhaps here we have a reflection of his own youth in Paris, then still full of Russian and childhood memories, though it is “Rubies” that is more closely associated with the “presumptuous” young Balanchine. “Rubies,” the second part, comes as an energetic contrast to the first. The staging is sharp and witty with a piquant note of irony. Here, Balanchine steps forward as a gambler in a dialogue and friendly rivalry with Stravinsky: it is this swordplay of choreography and music that forms the inner plot of “Rubies.” There is, however, also specific imagery here: although Balanchine declared that he never intended it to be an image of America, it can nevertheless be seen here clearly enough — jazzy, sporty and life-loving America. “Diamonds” is, of course, the Russian part, and not just because of Tchaikovsky. This is an image of classical St. Petersburg ballet— with its utter majesty, apex and, at the same time, a portrait of it, filled with admiration and reverance created by someone who had long since become a great American. Inna Sklyarevskaya World premiere: 13 April 1967, New York City Ballet, New York State Theater Premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre: 30 October 1999, St. Petersburg

ABOUT

THE MARIINSKY BALLET The Mariinsky Ballet is closely linked with the entire history of the development of Russian choreographic art, which began more than two and a half centuries ago. Foreign dance masters played an important role in the establishment and evolution of Russian ballet. The history of St. Petersburg ballet in the 19th century was associated with the activities of Charles Didelot, Jules Perrot and Arthur Saint-Léon. In 1869, the position of principal ballet master was entrusted to Marius Petipa who markedly raised the professional standards of the company. The peak accomplishments of this famous choreographer were ballets staged in the period of his collaboration with the composers Pyotr Tchaikovsky (The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake) and Alexander Glazunov (Raymonda). At the turn of the 19th century, the Mariinsky Ballet produced such great dancers as Mathilde Kschessinska, Olga Preobrazhenskaya, Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, Olga Spesivtseva and Vaslav Nijinsky. Many of them brought glory to Russian ballet during the legendary Les Saisons Russes in Paris, which brought the pioneering works of Michel Fokine to Europe. In the 1920s, when Fyodor Lopukhov, a daring innovator and a brilliant connoisseur of the past, became head of the company, the company's repertoire was enriched with new productions, in particular ballets dealing with contemporary life. Galina Ulanova, Alexei Yermolayev, Marina Semenova and Vakhtang Chabukiani all danced at the Mariinsky Theatre during that period. Ballet in the 1930s was largely influenced by dramatic theatre, and this was reflected in such productions as Rostislav Zakharov’s The Fountain of Bakhchisarai and Leonid Lavrovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. During the 1950s–1970s ballets by Leonid Yakobson, Yuri Grigorovich and Igor Belsky revived the traditions of symphonic dances. The success of these productions would obviously have been impossible without superb performers. During that period, the company’s dancers included Irina Kolpakova, Natalia Makarova, Alla Osipenko, Irina Gensler, Alla Sizova, Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Valery Panov and Yuri Soloviev. The present-day repertoire of the Mariinsky Ballet includes, along with Petipa’s legacy — Swan Lake, Raymonda, Le Corsaire, La Bayadére and The Sleeping Beauty — ballets staged by Michel Fokine, George Balanchine, Frederic Ashton, William Forsythe, Alexei Ratmansky, Angelin Preljocaj and Wayne McGregor.

ABOUT THE MARIINSKY ORCHESTRA The Mariinsky Orchestra is one of the oldest musical ensembles in Russia. It can trace its history back to the early 18th century and the development of the Court Instrumental Chapel. In the 19 th century, Eduard Nápravník played an extremely important role in the emergence of the Mariinsky Orchestra. He directed it for over half a century. The excellence of the orchestra was recognized on numerous occasions by the world-class musicians who conducted it, among them Berlioz, Wagner, von Bülow, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Nikisch and Rachmaninoff. In Soviet times, the ensemble’s illustrious traditions were continued by conductors such as Vladimir Dranishnikov, Ariy Pazovsky, Yevgeny Mravinsky, Konstantin Simeonov and Yuri Temirkanov.

Since 1988, the orchestra has been directed by Valery Gergiev, a musician of the highest order and an outstanding figure in the music world. Maestro Gergiev’s arrival at the helm ushered in a new era of rapid expansion of the orchestra’s repertoire, which today includes every symphony by Beethoven, Mahler, Prokofiev and Shostakovich; requiems by Mozart, Berlioz, Verdi, Brahms and Tishchenko, and various works by composers such as Stravinsky, Messiaen, Dutilleux, Henze, Shchedrin, Gubaidulina, Kancheli and Karetnikov. The orchestra performs programs of symphony music at prestigious concert venues throughout the world.

The orchestra has had the honor of being the first to perform many operas and ballets by Tchaikovsky, operas by Glinka, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, and ballets by Shostakovich, Khachaturian and Asafiev.

CENTER DANCE ARTS TOUR TO EDINBURGH FESTIVAL AND LONDON

As enthusiastic lovers of performing arts, Center Dance Arts (CDA) members engage in a variety of activities to enjoy and learn about local and international dance companies, including special trips like the recent one to Edinburgh and London. CDA members came together in August for 8 days of dance, music, theatre and camaraderie at the Edinburgh International Festival. Dance highlights included a world premiere of Scottish Ballet’s The Crucible, including talks with the choreographer and executive director of the company, BalletBoyz and Floating Flowers as part of the Fringe Festival, a visit to Rambert Dance Company for rehearsal, the Bolshoi Ballet’s Swan Lake, and the premier of Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet, followed by a breakfast discussion the next morning with Matthew Bourne. We also enjoyed the festival opening featuring a rousing performance of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony by the LA Phil, as well as a stunning chamber concert with pianist Yuya Wang and clarinetist Andreas Ottensamer. We took in several theater productions, ranging from the National Theatre’s provocative Peter Gynt, to a one-woman show by Diana Dinerman, a comedian and former dancer, to TINA, The Tina Turner Musical in London.

CDA members JoAnn and Wade Bourne, Tim Wahl and Julia Strickland, Jane Jelenko, Judith Reichman, Charlene Achki-Repko and Helene Rosenzweig at the New Club in Edinburgh.

While having fun and making friends, all the members became much more knowledgeable about dance and the performing arts. That’s what the CDA community is all about – coming together with like-minded individuals to share and deepen our cultural experiences. We hope you will join us for events at The Music Center, around town and maybe even our next trip!
