Matthew Bourne’s magical double Olivier Award-winning (2017)

adaptation of the classic Powell and Pressburger film is set to a new

score arranged by Terry Davies using the mesmerizing music of golden-

age Hollywood composer, Bernard Herrmann. A beloved fairytale and Academy

Award-winning movie, this enthralling story has seduced audiences and fascinated generations of dancers with its tale of obsession, desire and one girl’s dream to

be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance, but her ambitions become entangled with two men who pull her career in opposite directions. The result is an enthralling tribute to the tumultuous life of an artist.

Bourne’s magical new adaptation reunites the team who brought you New Adventures’ worldwide hit, Sleeping Beauty. The Red Shoes features sumptuous designs by Lez

Brotherston (set and costumes), Paule Constable (lighting) and Paul Groothuis (sound). An intoxicating drama where life imitates art with fateful consequences, The Red Shoes will dazzle your senses and break your heart.

Presented by T H E M U S I C C E N T E R O N L O C AT I O N ™ * T H E C U LV E R S T U D I O S , C U LV E R C I T Y, C A O C T. 1 8 — 2 1 , 2 0 1 7

Performed by A K R A M K H A N C O M PA N Y An ancient Indian epic reimagined through the eyes of women,

Until the Lions is award-winning choreographer and dancer Akram Khan’s powerful take of poet Karthika Naïr’s book Until the Lions: Echoes from the

Mahabharata. The title of the piece borrows from a popular African proverb, “Until the lions have their own historian, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”

The story explores the notion and physical expression of gender with the tale of Princess Amba, who, after being abducted on her wedding day and stripped of her honor, invokes

the gods to seek revenge. Using kathak, a classical Indian dance, as well as contemporary dance forms, Khan electrifies the stage with raw, powerful emotions balanced by moments of sublime tenderness.

Khan performs alongside two remarkable female dancers, Ching-Ying Chien and

Joy Alpuerto Ritter, and four live musicians: singers Sohini Alam and David Azurza, percussionist Yaron Engler and musician Joseph Ashwin. Visual artist Tim Yip,

lighting designer Michael Hulls and dramaturg Ruth Little help bring to life this epic theatrical piece.

Reimagine history with this primal tale of the strength and endurance of the female spirit. * This presentation of Until the Lions by The Music Center On Location™ takes audiences offsite beyond

The Music Center’s campus for the first time in the history of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. This production will be held in the round at The Culver Studios in Culver City, CA, where many of Hollywood’s golden age classics were filmed.

“ Khan captures both the intimacy of the moment and its cosmic scale.” — T H E GUA R DI A N

Performed by M I A M I C I T Y B A L L E T A M U S I C C E N T E R Co-Commission

Delight in the storybook holiday fairytale that captures the spirit of

the season through the magic of a child’s imagination. It is Christmas Eve. A blanket of snow covers the ground, a bright Christmas star

glows in the sky, and Marie and her Nutcracker Prince are about to embark on an unexpected journey to a winter wonderland of enchantment!

The Music Center brings back a holiday tradition to Los Angeles with a world premiere of the new George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® by Miami City Ballet. The holiday classic, with Balanchine’s iconic choreography, features all-new

sets and costumes by Cuban-American artist/designer power couple Isabel and Ruben Toledo. Strengthening The Music Center’s ties with L.A.-based artists, performances will include, for the first time, student dancers from two L.A.

arts academies — The Colburn School and The Gabriella Foundation’s everybody dance! — while the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus will provide live vocals. A live orchestra will play Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky’s timeless score.

Make Dance at The Music Center part of your holiday traditions. The new George

Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® is the perfect winter celebration for the entire family.

“ Pastor’s work is a marvel, and the Joffrey dancers seem to be catapulted to the moon by it…. A masterful achievement on every level.” — C H I C A G O S U N -T I M E S The Music Center’s D O R OT H Y C H A N D L E R PAV I L I O N M A R . 9 — 1 7, 2 0 1 8 LIVE ORCHESTRA

Performed by T H E J O F F R E Y B A L L E T The Joffrey Ballet returns to Los Angeles with a stunning take on the

perennial classic, Romeo & Juliet. Much more than the archetypal tragic story of forbidden love, this reimagined tale takes place amid the tumult of 20th

century Italian politics and sets Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers against a backdrop of politics and war.

The ballet begins in Mussolini-era 1930s Italy and spans three decades of political strife, illustrating that generations of families can be affected by the decisions of

their forefathers — a lesson especially relevant to modern audiences. The Joffrey Ballet’s magnificent dancers are propelled by Sergei Prokofiev’s lushly dramatic 1935 score and the strikingly modern costumes of Tatyana Van Walsum.

Surrender to Krzysztof Pastor’s critically-acclaimed retelling of Shakespeare’s iconic

tale for modern times. Blurring the lines of dance and violence, this is impossible love at its most defiant.
