Director and chief choreographer John Neumeier has developed Hamburg Ballet into one of the world’s most extraordinary dance companies. Neumeier has continually focused on the preservation of ballet tradition, while giving his works a modern dramatic framework, ultimately creating an unmistakable choreographic language. Hamburg Ballet makes its company debut performance at The Music Center with Bernstein Dances, based on the music and spirit of the multi-talented composer Leonard Bernstein. Rather than a direct telling of Bernstein’s life, this work is a dance mosaic inspired by his personal and professional journeys and is unified by his timeless and beloved music.

Since its now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has grown from a small group of African American dancers, to a revolutionary company that transcends barriers and celebrates the African American cultural experience. In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the company as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world.” Under the decade-long leadership of its visionary artistic director Robert Battle, the company continues to honor the monumental legacy of its founder, while expanding the Ailey repertory and developing the next generation of choreographers. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will perform different programs of mixed repertory, which all conclude with its enduring classic Revelations, beloved by generations of fans. Using African American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues, Revelations fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. Seeing Revelations for the first time or the hundredth is a transcendent experience.

Under the direction of Peter Boal, Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet companies and ballet schools. Boundary-bending is the theme for this trio of daring and stunning performances. Little mortal jump, by resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo, is a cohesive blend of different styles and genres that fuses the technicality of movement, the theatricality of the stage and the dark humor inherent in relationships. Crystal Pite’s Plot Point, set to Bernard Herrmann’s film score from Psycho, is a suspenseful dance-theater work featuring parallel casts whose interplay gives life to Pite’s experiment in rendering a screenplay in wordless movement. Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station, set to a collection of compositions by R&B artist Allen Toussaint, takes place in 1940s New Orleans and tells the story of a man attempting to connect with his son and pass on his steps before he must surrender to three gilded Fates.
