NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 30th anniversary of The Music Center’s Spotlight, our nationally acclaimed scholarship and arts training program. Spotlight is near and dear to my heart. As both an artist and an arts administrator, I know how critically important it is to help young people reach their full potential no matter their artistic dream. Spotlight empowers students by emphasizing preparation, courage, critical thinking and perseverance and provides an invaluable opportunity for high school students to hone their skills. From college and career workshops, to live auditions and master classes with world-class artists, the year-long program is offered FREE to students of all skill levels. Perhaps most significantly, Spotlight helps reinforce the value of arts education for students, their dedicated teachers and families, as well as their friends and peers. This year, more than 1,400 high school students from across Southern California participated in Spotlight. Each has had the chance to learn and grow by leaps and bounds. We salute these young artists, applaud the loving parents and family members who support them and the

outstanding arts teachers who have helped them reach such remarkable levels of achievement. Tonight, we honor our Founding Chairman Fred Roberts and 30 years of transforming lives through Spotlight. We share his great sense of pride as we consider the tens of thousands of young artists who have benefited from this unique mentorship and learning opportunity. We also salute our key supporters, without whom none of this would be possible. Bank of America, Helen and Peter Bing, Tim Wahl and Julia Strickland, Edgerton Foundation, Jerry and Terri Kohl and The Music Center Leadership Council have all provided generous lead sponsorship of Spotlight. It is through their leadership that Spotlight is positioned for continued success. I know the Grand Finale Performance will be an extra special treat. I hope you enjoy this wonderful evening of outstanding performances as we celebrate 30 years of Spotlight.

Rachel M. Moore President & CEO, The Music Center 1

Alluring audiences with emotionally tinged performances has been the signature of Angela Bassett, who personifies a sense of dignity and pride whenever she appears on screen. Her talent and abilities as an actress, director and executive producer in both television and film have garnered well-deserved respect and acclaim from peers and fans; proving her to be one of the industry’s premier leading ladies. This season Angela stars in Ryan Coogler’s highly acclaimed Black Panther with Chadwick Boseman, Sterling K. Brown, and Lupita Nyong’o; and in Mission: Impossible-Fallout with Tom Cruise. She also executive produced and starred in 9-1-1, Ryan Murphy’s newest hit series for Fox; and showcased her directing talents in American Horror Story: Cult. ABOUT OUR FOUNDING CHAIRMAN

Roberts with 2003 Spotlight Finalists.

FRED ROBERTS As Founding Chairman of Spotlight since its inception, Fred Roberts led campaigns to provide the funding needed to grow and sustain the Spotlight program, and he continues to advise The Music Center to this day. In addition to embracing the fundraising challenge, Fred developed strategic and operating plans. He took what had started as a scholarship competition and built it into a major education initiative.

“ In every high school, there’s a sports hero. We need to create violin heroes.”

He recently reflected on the most meaningful aspect of getting involved. “One of the best parts of this program is the immense pride that we all feel to see the successes of these students. And not just the ones who are in the final performance; so many thousands of students have improved their lives, become better citizens, and become more successful in many areas. It’s enormously fulfilling, and it’s the greatest gift we can all get from this program.” In addition to impacting individual students, Fred always saw Spotlight as a way to raise the profile of the arts in the high schools of Southern California. When asked to summarize that vision, he has often responded, “In every high school, there’s a sports hero. We need to create violin heroes.” Fred is not only a believer in the power of the arts to transform lives, he is a living example of it. After 30 years in finance, including

4

running his own investment banking firm and acting as Chairman of the NASD, which owned and operated The Nasdaq Stock Market, Fred became a professional photographer. He published three collections of photographs, which have been recognized by publications including The New York Times. His work has been exhibited at the United Nations and in museums and galleries worldwide. With this newfound passion came the desire to inspire others. He now dedicates most of his time to operating photography workshops for high school students around the world, most of whom have never held a camera, primarily in developing countries. The students learn photography skills, but, most importantly, they are empowered to express themselves and tell the stories of their families and communities. Fred has made it his mission to give young people a voice and instill in them a sense of purpose and pride through training in the arts. Tonight, while he is teaching a new group of students in Mombasa, we celebrate his passionate advocacy here at his Music Center home. In the words of Spotlight Director Jeri Gaile, “He is the heart of the program and the compass on what is right, and how to do it, so that we truly make a difference in children’s lives.”

A NOTE FROM OUR CHAIR

Ignite the Journey to a Brighter Future.

For 30 years, it has been our honor and privilege at The Music Center to nurture young artists and support their journeys through the Spotlight program. As you marvel at the abilities of tonight’s performers, know that even the most talented and dedicated young people need guidance and encouragement to achieve their dreams. The finalists this evening each represent more than a hundred others who grew as artists and professionals through personalized coaching, and even more who learned about college and career opportunities at the Spotlight Academy and in their schools. Since 1988, Spotlight has provided unforgettable learning experiences to more than 42,000 alumni who have achieved success in the arts, business, technology, medicine, and education. Today, we are committed to growing the Spotlight program even further, particularly our programs in schools in underserved areas. Thank you for helping us cultivate the next generation of artists and creative leaders. Timothy S. Wahl 30th Anniversary Chair, Spotlight

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

THE MUSIC CENTER’S SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM: A SPOTLIGHT ON LEARNING

The mission of The Music Center’s Spotlight program (Spotlight) is to provide a supportive environment in which high school students can develop the skills needed to pursue their dreams, with an emphasis on self-esteem, preparation and perseverance. Spotlight is a key part of The Music Center’s commitment to promoting artistic excellence and advancing quality arts education. Whether or not these students pursue a career in the arts, the Spotlight program empowers them with the confidence and presentation skills to pursue their dreams in any field. Tonight’s performance is the culmination of an intensive, year-long educational process that includes following components:

AUDITION PROCESS PRELIMINARY AUDITIONS The Spotlight performance categories are acting, ballet, non-classical dance, classical voice, non-classical voice, classical instrumental and jazz instrumental. Students submit audition videos and advance to live auditions based on the recommendations of distinguished panels of judges. Each student who auditions receives a personal letter with detailed feedback from the judges, identifying his or her strengths and suggesting areas for improvement. Cash scholarships called Merit Awards are provided to five students in each category who do not advance to the Semifinals. SEMIFINAL AUDITIONS In the spring, the Semifinalists return to audition before another panel of expert judges. Each Semifinalist receives written detailed feedback and a cash scholarship in recognition of achievement in the program. For more information about The Music Center’s Spotlight program, visit musiccenter.org or email spotlight@musiccenter.org.

13

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

MASTER CLASSES

Each year, we present master classes for our Semifinalists with renowned artists in all categories of Spotlight. Some classes are private, however many are open to all participating students to observe. The master classes are designed to help students develop artistry and musicality, while giving students the opportunity to learn from distinguished and celebrated teachers. This year’s master classes featured Broadway star Jason Graae, LA Phil’s Associate Concert Master Bing Wang, Broadway director Coy Middlebrook, International opera star and USC faculty member Thomas Michael Allen and The Joffrey Ballet’s Artistic Director, Ashley Wheater. Past teachers have included alum and Cliburn Award recipient, Sean Chen; Artistic Director, San Francisco Ballet, Helgi Tomasson, Metropolitan Opera star Cynthia Munzer, Artistic Director (Abraham.In.Motion and Choreographer) Kyle Abraham, Jazz recording artist and Professor Ronald McCurdy, and Broadway legend Karen Morrow, just to name a few.

14

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

SPOTLIGHT ACADEMY The Spotlight Academy is presented each fall for over 500 students, parents and teachers to come to The Music Center for a day of free workshops and seminars. The goal of the academy is to help students prepare for the future, whether their aim is to have a career on stage or not. Each performing arts discipline is represented with classes on subjects like:

The Nuts and Bolts of Paying for College & Financial Readiness

Headshots, Casting & Interviews for College & Career

What You Can Do With a Music Degree?

What I Wish I Would Have Known Before Going To College!

What are College Audition Panels Looking For?

How To Make A Great Audition Video for Spotlight and College

For dancers: College, Commercial, Companies, Agents, Auditioning, Audition videos, and Artistry

How to Deal with Nerves in Interviews & Performances

Choosing material which helps you shine while prepping for successful interviews.

15

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

SPOTLIGHT IN SCHOOLS As part of The Music Center and Spotlight’s commitment to youth development initiatives, we are presenting the Spotlight in Schools — a program that brings panels into schools to introduce students to careers in the arts and arts-adjacent fields through discussion. The goal of the Spotlight in Schools is to help students think outside the box and explore college and career pathways, while learning about a broad range of fields such as arts administration, event planning, fundraising, careers backstage and programming.

The goal is to really meet students “where they are.” Aside from exploring job descriptions, the interactive dialogue between panelists and students explores personal stories involving challenges, adversity and career paths. The students learn about the pros and cons of specific jobs, how college shapes you, skills acquired in school and the skills needed to join the workforce, as well as how you continue to grow and develop as a working professional.

For more information on how you can have your school or organization participate in Spotlight in Schools, contact spotlight@musiccenter.org 16

HISTORICAL TRIBUTE

Susan Kendall, Peggy Grauman, Dona Kendall and Walter Grauman

As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, The Music Center wishes to pay special tribute to four instrumental patrons who have supported Spotlight for all 30 years! Misty Copeland, Walter Grauman and Heather McGreevey, Spotlight Finale, 1998.

PEGGY & WALTER GRAUMAN Television producer/director Walter Grauman set the stage for Spotlight back in December 1988, when he offered to produce a showcase of student talent as part of The Music Center’s WinterFest fundraising event. Walter wanted to find a way to connect young people to The Music Center. Recalling a television show he produced back in 1949 called Lights, Camera, Action, Walter produced the first show before a panel of judges that included legendary Hollywood figures such as Darryl Zannuck and Walter Mirisch. Two hundred students participated that first year in four categories — classical instrumental, opera, ballet and acting. Walter remained involved with Spotlight as executive producer and brought in his good friend AJ Carothers to write the script for the awards show. With Walter’s passing, his wife Peggy continues to be a proud advocate and carry on his legacy. Peggy has served as chair for numerous Spotlight galas including the very first WinterFest. Peggy regarded Walter as her most priceless gift to The Music Center. Walter’s initial vision has grown to be one of the nation’s premier programs for young artists and his spirit will forever be with us at The Music Center.

HISTORICAL TRIBUTE

Helen Bing, Peggy and Walter Grauman, Spotlight Finale, 1994.

Helen Bing with 2013 Grand Prize Finalists

HELEN & DR. PETER BING When Dorothy Chandler shared the vision for a program for high school students at a Blue Ribbon meeting and asked for funding to create Spotlight, Helen Bing enthusiastically responded yes! She and her husband, Peter, have been generous supporters since the inception of Spotlight. That fact is remarkable on its own, but it pales when you consider that they have been giving to The Music Center since 1970. As two of The Music Center’s most loyal and generous contributors, it’s no exaggeration to say that both are much loved members of The Music Center Family. Peter served on The Music Center Board of Directors from 1970–1995 and Helen has been a member of The Blue Ribbon since 1970. “I consider Helen and Peter our angels,” said Spotlight director Jeri Gaile. “They truly care about the students and the value they gain from this program. I am so grateful to them for their deep understanding of the importance of the arts and the integral part they play in a young person’s life.”

Helen Bing with Matthew Rushing

Over the program’s history, Helen and Peter have helped with funding over $2.2 million in scholarships and supporting the journey of each of our 42,000 alumni. The Music Center is honored to applaud their leadership and thank them for their ongoing support and generosity.
