PAPUA NEW GUINEA With Kate Humble 5 of the best! DIVING ADVENTURES SMALL GROUP Holidays AWESOME AUSTRALIA Dives around the coastline Summer ESCAPES
Once again
I’m Hooked… TV presenter Kate Humble recounts her recent visit to Papua New Guinea where she re-kindles her love for diving.
I
have a confession to make. I lost my passion for diving. It is no secret to those of us who treasure our marine environment that it is under more pressure than possibly any other natural habitat. Although the excitement of having that wonderful privilege that scuba diving gives you, of being able to enter another world never left me, I also began to see the effects of these pressures and my enthusiasm for diving became tainted. So I stopped. But then I realised I really missed it; I missed hauling myself into unforgiving neoprene, pushing spit around a mask, the inelegant shuffle when burdened with tank, weights, and fins. So I phoned Dive Worldwide. ‘Papua New Guinea’ I was told, without hesitation. Diving there would restore my enthusiasm for the underwater world. Papua New Guinea is far away and takes a correspondingly long time to get to, so we wanted to make the most of our time there. We had just over two weeks and started at the resort of Lissenung, which occupies a tiny island off the coast of Kavieng. Small, simple and unpretentious it was the perfect peaceful place to arrive with jetlag, a stack of books and our dive kit. Our very first dive, to a site just twenty minutes away, made me realise just what I’d been missing. The reef was
2
magnificent. A riot of colour and diversity and the fish were so abundant it was sometimes hard to see beyond them. Every dive had a highlight. From there we headed to the mainland resort of Tufi, perched in a magnificent setting above a fjord. Again we were struck by the sheer beauty of the reefs and the amount of species we’d see on one dive, and it was here that I saw a creature that had long been on my wish list. We had seen sharks on almost every dive; grey reef, black tip and white tip, but nothing prepares you for the sheer adrenalin rush that hits you when out in the blue you catch site of the torpedo that is a hammerhead. We returned home and immediately starting planning our next underwater adventure. Once again, I’m hooked.

Underwater Photography with Jane Morgan
Jane Morgan is an award winning underwater photographer and photo-journalist. Her work has been widely published in the UK diving press and national newspapers. Here Jane gives us an insight to her world of underwater photography.
How did you get into underwater photography?
Tell us about your favourite photo.
I discovered underwater photography during a trip to the Red Sea back in 2001 and have never looked back. It was, in short, due to the persistence and encouragement of the liveaboard dive guide.
My favourite macro was taken very early on in my career in Nuweiba. I was on a night dive when I spotted a Spanish dancer on the sand. I was struggling to fit the whole animal into the shot as I was equipped with a macro lens, so I started looking really closely at the details and spotted a tiny shrimp peering out from under the gills. It was the first time that I’d seen a Spanish dancer and I love the colour red, so this one is still one of my favourites - even after all these years.
On my first dive with an underwater camera I was busy fiddling with the controls and, when I looked up, I realised that I had drifted off from the reef. Out in the blue, something was swimming straight at me. As it got closer I couldn’t believe my eyes as a scalloped hammerhead swam into focus. I was thinking that my first ever underwater image would be a full framed shot of a hammerhead shark…(find out what happened on our blog!) Within a year I had managed to find the money to purchase a second hand motor marine and then upgrade to a housed camera. I became addicted to photography and in the very next year I won my first major competition, the BSoUP Beginners Portfolio.
What camera do you use right now?
What do you enjoy most about the diving in Indonesia? All my trips to this beautiful region have been incredibly productive as far as macro photography is concerned. Of course Bali is inside the Coral Triangle, which is a hot spot for marine and terrestrial biodiversity, so it shouldn’t be so surprising that there is so much to see. On my last visit to Bali one of my favourite dives was Seraya Secrets and so I can’t wait to get back there!
I have been shooting with a Nikon D300s since 2009. Working as the Dive Technician at Falmouth University I have a number of camera systems at my fingertips including a Nikon D7100, Panasonic Bridge, Canon compacts and the Olympus Tough.
What subjects do you enjoy shooting the most? That’s always a hard one to answer. I love them all and I am as comfortable shooting apex predators as I am anemones and fish; however my heart has always been in macro. I just love hunting out tiny animals and revealing details about them that are actually invisible to the naked eye.
Jane Morgan Bali Expedition Join Jane on her exclusive photography trip to Bali departing on 4th September this year. Limited spaces remaining! 10 days from £1,975

Meet
The Dive Team In the first of a series of articles featuring the Dive team here Phil North answers our Mastermind (scuba) questions. Phil heads up the Dive team and relishes sharing his expert knowledge of some of the world’s best diving destinations. His fascination with the underwater world began in Thailand, where he completed an open water course in 2002. By 2005 he had the bug and turned pro, working in Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt and Thailand.
What or who inspired you to learn to dive?
What is your most memorable marine life encounter?
Learning to dive was actually a challenge for me as I was no water baby. I wanted to learn to dive to overcome a bit of a fear of deep water. Little did I realise at the time that a whole new world was there to be discovered and explored. Since overcoming my initial fear, I haven’t looked back!
During my first season working as a DM in Thailand I made a trip to Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, known for big fish encounters. The sea was pretty wild and I didn’t know the dive sites at all, so I was a little apprehensive. The crew got my group in the water and pointed towards the dive site, a submerged pinnacle. I looked below the surface to get my bearings and, lo and behold, there was a manta cruising right below me. We saw a total of six giant Pacific mantas on that dive. Definitely one to remember!
Have you had any other jobs in the dive travel industry? I spent a number of years working in the diving industry in southeast Asia including Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, where I ran an underwater photo and video business with my soon to be wife on the island of Koh Lanta.
What excites you most about being underwater? The unexpected. I am a bit of an explorer at heart and simply love the feeling that you are about to stumble upon something beautiful, fascinating or awe-inspiring, whether that be a strange critter or a manta ray.
Where in the world would you most like to dive and why? Even though I have been lucky enough to dive many spots in Indonesia, Raja Ampat remains very much on my bucket list and undoubtedly has some of the finest diving on the planet. The Pacific big fish meccas of Galapagos, Socorro and Cocos are also right up there on my wishlist.
Where was your last logged dive? Caño Island in Costa Rica. Again, with a huge (mostly white) manta ray. I have been quite lucky with mantas!
If you weren’t working in the dive travel industry, what would be your ideal job? Many moons ago, I was a mortgage OFILE advisor, but I can’t R P R envisage - DIVE H T R going back NO PHIL to that! I have a bit of a geeky side and 002 love the web, ate: 2 M D n o ti ADI D a P 0 c : so maybe a web fi n i t o er ut 160 ati C o c b fi i A t : r designer? nt Ce dives
