Outstanding adventure holidays for the whole family

We firmly believe that sharing an exciting new experience 'en famille', enjoying a different culture and learning together enriches our life as a family. After all, it’s not so long before those little bundles of joy turn into teenagers, and all too soon it becomes uncool to travel with parents! So we want to enjoy as much quality time on holiday as we can now, have lots of fun together, and create precious memories that will last a lifetime.

My wife and I love travelling and have been taking adventurous trips with our twin girls – now aged 13 – since they were tiny. Among the places we’ve visited on Families Worldwide holidays are Costa Rica for our first experience of Latin America as a family, and most recently Iceland over the New Year, where we were amazed by the island’s extraordinary volcanic landscape. We are planning to visit Namibia which is an old favourite of mine where I regularly lead adult wildlife adventures.

Taking after us, both our girls are exceptionally keen on outdoor activities and are prepared to try their hand at absolutely anything. Among the next holidays they’re looking forward to are our bestselling trips to Croatia – an action-packed multi-activity stay on the idyllic Mediterranean coastline – and to the Iberian Peninsula to learn how to surf on our Portugal Family Surf School trip.

Of course, these are only a few of the options among a fabulous array of holidays around the world that you can select from the Families Worldwide brochure or website. Whether you want to travel on a meticulously planned fixed itinerary as part of a small group along with another two or three families, or on a tailormade holiday with just your own kith and kin, you’re sure to find something here which fits the bill.

And whichever trip you choose, you can rest assured that we will do absolutely everything to make travel easy and take out all the hassle – we know only too well what it’s like to lead a busy life and be stretched for time. All you need to do is just speak to our enthusiastic and knowledgeable team of expert travel consultants who’re there to help you at every stage of your booking.

We look forward to helping you plan your next family adventure in the world’s most magical destinations.

A Bit of Croatian Fun

With a wide choice of activities to suit all abilities, ages and adventure levels and a good choice of low-cost flights from the UK, Croatia makes an ideal short-haul family holiday destination.

Well known for its historic walled capital, Dubrovnik, and the stunning island-dotted Dalmatian Coast, Croatia is a fantastic holiday destination. With beautiful rivers and turquoise lagoons, subterranean tunnels and World Heritage Sites aplenty, our group trips focus on getting the whole family active in this popular Balkan country.

Our Active Croatia itinerary offers the perfect choice for adults and older children alike. Beginning in central Croatia just east of Split, we take an exhilarating ride on the River Cetina – kayaking for five kilometres downstream. Arriving at the coast we have time to swim and snorkel to a wreck. The following day we enjoy canyoning in Cetina with its rapids, waterfalls and plunge tunnels and later in the week we zipline over this canyon enjoying panoramic views over the town and coast. Finally we take a relaxing cruise to the Blue Lagoon, exploring Pucisca in Brac –said to be one of the prettiest towns in Europe - and relaxing on idyllic beaches. This is a perfect choice for active families who also

like a bit of free time to explore by themselves – a leisure day is included in the itinerary to give you the chance to do as much or as little as you wish!

Our Coastal Croatia itinerary is also based in the coastal town of Omis on the central Dalmatian Coast for a week. Suitable for children over eight years old, this is a relaxing holiday focusing on enjoying the nearby islands of Hvar and Brac by speedboat and swimming in shallow bays fringed by white sand beaches.

Explore World Heritage Sites in Sibenik, and visit Krka National Park, famous for its 17 waterfalls and clear rivers which you can swim in. With two free days you have the choice to relax or take part in an optional activity such as rafting, cycling, rock climbing or paddleboarding.

For a good value holiday in Europe – with a wide range of activities to suit every member of the family plus scenic beaches – Croatia is hard to beat!

Finland’s Winter Wonderland

A winter holiday in Finland was the choice for Director Nick Joynes and his family as they embarked on our Northern Lights Adventure over the Christmas holidays.

We posed some questions to Nick and his family to find out more about their exciting winter adventure to Finland.

Q Why did you choose the Northern Lights Adventure for your family holiday?

Nick & Helen: We like to make the most of the kids’ Christmas holiday break and have always wanted to do a winter snow holiday with friends, so the Northern Lights Adventure seemed perfect. We’re not a skiing family nor are our friends, so were looking for a good alternative to enjoy some great winter activities.

Q What’s special about Finland?

Nick & Helen: We chose to travel over the New Year. At this time of year, the scenery is absolutely stunning. The pine and spruce forests were laden with snow; it truly was a winter wonderland.

Sophia: The snow – there was soooooo much SNOW!

Hannah: Everywhere I looked, there was really beautiful scenery and the activities were really good fun.

Q Do you have tips for travelling with kids to Finland?

Nick & Helen: There is no need to worry about getting cold – the clothing provided is excellent and the accommodation is cosy and warm. We suggest packing some fun family board and card games and take biscuits, savoury snacks and sweets to eat whilst out participating in the activities. Be prepared to get ‘stuck in’ and embrace all activities – they really are great fun!

Q Would you recommend Finland to your friends?

Nick & Helen: Absolutely. It is the perfect alternative to the skiing holiday. It is adventurous, it is active and is set in a beautiful area. It is not gimmicky in any way. The Finnish wilderness guides are extremely knowledgeable and highly experienced. It is a holiday for the whole family to enjoy a range of winter activities.

Hannah: Definitely. All the activities were really good. Everyone

got to try them out and have more goes if they really liked them and the whole holiday was really good fun.

Sophia: The guides were very good and always looked after us – they were also really good fun to be with and even organised for us all to have a New Year’s party at their homes, where they showed us traditional New Year games and fortune telling.

Q Would you go back?

All: Definitely!

On Safari with the Kids!

Families Worldwide Director, Chris Breen, outlines the different African safari options to help you decide which country and what kind of safari experience is right for your family.

From a personal point of view, a safari with my family and friends is the very best holiday of all. There is lots to do and see, plenty to keep younger members of the family interested (looking out for lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant or giraffe will keep anyone alert for an extended period of time!), and you are invariably in a truly beautiful location. Add to that the fact that it is a great way to introduce younger family members to the idea of conserving our wonderful planet, or perhaps learning a new skill such as photography, painting or diary writing, and you may well have the ideal holiday.

However, having decided that you are going to have a family safari, where should you go and why? There are so many different safari countries in Africa … and they all claim to be the best!

The first important considerations are whether you wish to combine your safari with other activities, and whether you wish to self-drive. If you like the idea of self-driving, then both South Africa and Namibia are great options. South Africa has the advantage of direct flights from the UK – to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban – which is an important consideration when travelling as a family. In addition to some fabulous wildlife viewing on the

eastern side of the country in and around Kruger National Park and KwaZulu Natal, if you go at the right time of year (our summer holidays) there is tremendous whale watching off the southern coast, which can be neatly combined with some of the world’s finest wineries in the Cape Town area for the adults!

Namibia is more ‘off beat’ but another country perfect for selfdriving and with some great pockets of wildlife – Etosha, the Waterberg Plateau and the Skeleton Coast to name a few – not to mention the towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei and the now famous cheetah conservation project at Okonjima.

If you want something a little more ‘traditional’, and good value, then it has to be East Africa. Tanzania is where many people take their once-in-a-lifetime safari, and it is an excellent choice. You are almost guaranteed to see large herds of wildebeest and zebra, together with lion, cheetah and all of the other plains game that you might imagine. But, you will see more people on safari than you would in other safari countries and that is not for everyone.

For the connoisseurs, Zambia and Botswana are the places to go. In Zambia, the Luangwa Valley and Lower Zambezi, and in

Contact our Families team to plan your next family adventure10

Botswana the Okavango Delta, Moremi and Chobe; and both countries also have easy access to the Victoria Falls – a wonderful place to end a safari.

Zambia and Botswana offer small, intimate lodges and tented camps, outstanding guiding and wildlife that goes beyond anything you might be able to imagine and (in Zambia particularly) there are a number of family-friendly lodges where you can have your own private family guide, your own chefs and your own safari schedule, for very little extra cost.

So, if going on a family safari is your idea of a memorable holiday – it is mine, one of our favourites was a holiday to Zambia’s Luangwa Valley followed by a trip along South Africa’s Garden Route for some whale watching – then give us a call and let’s talk through some of the options with you and put together your perfect trip.

Contact our expert team or visit our website to book a tailor-made or small group family safari holiday. See overleaf for a selection of our safari holidays.

“Experiencing the various animals in their natural environments is something the kids have not stopped talking about. Game drives from Selous were awesome. The camp was absolutely fabulous, and the staff and guides were all brilliant throughout the holiday.”

New Experiences in Namibia

We've put together our top five reasons to visit Namibia as a family, and introduce our brand new trips to this spectacular country.

1. Going Your Own Way

For a self-sufficient family adventure, you can’t choose better than to self-drive, which is common practice in Namibia on easy to navigate, tourist-friendly roads. Both children and parents will revel in the sense of freedom as you follow detailed instructions with comprehensive maps of how to find your next destination.

2. Extraordinary Landscapes

Geography books can teach you about deserts and their geological wonders, but nothing can quite prepare you for the exceptional landscapes you will experience in Namibia. Climb 85 metres to the top of Dune 45 in Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert, be amazed by the huge granite kopjes in Damaraland and marvel at the 2000-year-old rock art at Twyfelfontein.

3. Learning About Wildlife Conservation

Etosha National Park is home to an abundance of wildlife, heading out on a vehicle safari or simply sitting in camp keeping a lookout offers exceptional wildlife watching. The lack of vegetation mean you can see the animals easily - floodlit watering holes at many of the camps attract large congregations of mammals and birds so you can enjoy unparalleled viewing opportunities.

4. Dune & Coastal Activities

There are plenty of activities to keep all the family happy! Climbing the huge dunes of Sossusvlei is worth every second for the views and hilarious sand-running descents. Also, not to be missed is a sea-kayaking expedition along the Skeleton Coast at Walvis Bay where you will be joined by the playful and inquisitive Cape fur seals.

5.Unparalleled Stargazing

It is little wonder that our favourite TV scientist, Professor Brian Cox, chooses to travel to Namibia for many of his programmes - light pollution here is minimal so some of the best star gazing opportunities can be enjoyed while camping out under clear skies in the wilderness of the Namib Desert.

NEW Namibia Self-drive Family Adventure

This 'classic-circuit' self-drive holiday includes plenty of contrast between the dunes of the Namib Desert, the wild Skeleton Coast and the arid salt pans of Etosha. This is the perfect African wildlife family adventure.

Highlights:

Watch sunrise in the Namib Desert

Going Wild in Costa Rica Family Interview

Families Worldwide Director Nick Joynes, his wife Helen and their twin daughters Sophia and Hannah, share their memories of a fantastic family holiday in Costa Rica …

Q Very briefly, where did you go?

Nick: We visited Tortuguero, Arenal, Monterverdo, Playa Hermosa and San José.

Q What’s special about Costa Rica?

Nick: In a nutshell, beautiful scenery and wonderful wildlife.

Helen: The fact that it has both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, as well as cloud forest, rainforest and volcanoes means it has a wide range of habitats to explore, and in turn a lot of different activities on offer.

Sophia: The pineapple was delicious – the best in the world! And it’s a very friendly place.

Hannah: Amazing jungles where you can see a lot of animals like scarlet macaws, sloths and nine-banded armadillos. I liked the zip-lining and canoeing.

Q What were your highlights?

Nick: Seeing the girls appreciate the wildlife – that was great – plus the river cruises we did, and Playa Hermosa’s stunning beaches.

Helen: The hanging bridges of Monteverde and zip-lining there was amazing fun.

Sophia: Ziplining in cloud forest so high up. One of the lines was 800 metres above the ground and we went right through a cloud! I loved seeing spider monkeys and a tarantula.

Hannah: The Tarzan swing at Monteverde. I loved swimming in a waterfall and going on a tour of a cocoa farm to see how chocolate is made (and we got to eat some too).

Q What did you like about the accommodation?

Nick: All the places we stayed were great and family friendly.

Helen: Each place we stayed at had a swimming pool which was great for the kids.

Sophia: Housekeeping folded the towels to look like elephants, and we could swim at each hotel.

Hannah: Lying in bed at Arenal looking at the volcano from my room, and swimming in the thermal springs there.

Q Have you got any tips for travelling long-haul with kids?

Nick & Helen: Download plenty of films before leaving the UK and pack a hand luggage case with two or three days’ worth of spare clothes and supplies in case the main bag gets delayed. Give yourself a day/night to recover at the start of the trip and choose accommodation with a swimming pool where you can. Lastly try and get into the new time zone as soon as possible (use an app such as Timeshifter to help with jet lag).

Q Would you go back?

All: Yes!
