Outstanding adventure holidays for the whole family

2020

Welcome There is something incredibly special about a family holiday – all travelling together to a new and exciting place, learning or experiencing new things as a family, and just having the time to concentrate on having fun. Family holidays are important and, after all, there are only a limited number of years that we are able to enjoy them before our youngsters have grown up and decided that they want to do their own thing, and that going away with the ‘older generation’ simply isn’t cool any more. That’s at least one of the reasons why I have tried over the years to take my family to some of the most interesting and exciting places we organise holidays to – Croatia, Jordan, Borneo, Mexico, Canada and, most recently, on safari in Zambia. I have always felt that we needed to be bold, to take our kids to some wild and wonderful places – into real wildernesses so they could learn about different cultures, communities and wildlife. People often ask me how old children need to be before you can take them on a wildlife holiday, and my answer is almost always the same – if you are going somewhere interesting and there is plenty to see and do, then your kids will enjoy it whatever their age. We first took our two children on safari when they were three and two years old respectively. Do they still remember it? I doubt it very much, but we had a brilliant time and they have wanted to go on safari ever since … so something must have worked! My kids are older now (our youngest is 16) and, as I write this introduction (in September 2019), we have just returned from our

2

family summer holiday – a safari in Zambia followed by a drive along the Garden Route in South Africa. We went with other family friends (who had never been to Africa and never been on safari) and everyone agreed – youngsters and oldsters alike – it was the holiday of a lifetime. At Families Worldwide we are well aware of how incredibly precious family holidays are and we know how important it is that they are meticulously crafted to ensure that everything goes to plan and that not a moment is wasted. It is no coincidence that you will see a number of articles in this current brochure that I have personally put together, featuring trips that my family has actually done. You are very welcome to call me, and I will happily chat to you about how they might work for your family. Sally and the team will, of course, be delighted to do the same – between us we have travelled to many places with our families and we love inspiring others to do the same. Wishing you and your family happy travels,

Chris Breen, Director

Our Family Holidays We specialise in designing excellent value holidays for families. Our portfolio includes more than 80 tours to over 50 destinations, and most of our holidays include activity, adventure, wildlife and cultural options as well as time simply to relax! Tailor-made Holidays

Small Group Holidays

We have recently expanded our portfolio of tailor-made holidays – these allow you the freedom and flexibility to travel how, when, where and with whom you wish. You may want to focus on particular activities or locations, or choose the style of accommodation. You may prefer a particular airline or class of travel, or wish to travel at a certain time of year. We provide tailormade holiday ideas, put together by our expert team who have already ‘been there and done it’. These will give you an idea of the possibilities and prices, but you are in the driving seat and our team can create a holiday to meet your exact requirements – just call or email us to discuss your ideas!

Our roots are in creating small group holidays and our collection of group family tours is second-to-none. Our small group holidays average four to 16 participants (between two and five families travelling together), the majority of whom do not know each other, depart on a fixed date and include a local guide for some or all of the tour. If you wish to extend a group holiday – for example by staying a few extra days in a resort or city before or after the group tour – we would be happy to provide suggestions and a quote. Please also bear in mind that most of our small group holidays can be adapted to a tailor-made holiday. Contact our experts to discuss your travel plans.

On Safari with the Kids! Families Worldwide Director, Chris Breen, outlines the different African safari options to help you decide which country and what kind of safari experience is right for your family.

F

rom a personal point of view, a safari with my family and friends is the very best holiday of all. There’s lots to do and see, plenty to keep younger members of the family interested (looking out for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants or giraffes will keep anyone alert for an extended period of time!), and you’re invariably in a truly beautiful location. Add to that the fact that it is a great way to introduce younger family members to the idea of conserving our wonderful planet, or perhaps learning a new skill such as photography, painting or diary writing, and you may well have the ideal holiday. However, having decided that you are going to have a family safari, where should you go and why? There are so many different safari countries in Africa … and they all claim to be the best! The first important considerations are whether you wish to combine your safari with other activities, and whether you wish to self-drive. If you like the idea of self-driving, then both South Africa and Namibia are great options. South Africa has the advantage of direct flights from the UK – to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban – which is an important consideration when travelling

4

as a family. In addition to some fabulous wildlife viewing on the eastern side of the country in and around Kruger National Park and KwaZulu Natal, if you go at the right time of year (our summer holidays) there is tremendous whale watching off the southern coast, which can be neatly combined with some of the world’s finest wineries in the Cape Town area for the adults! Namibia is more ‘off beat’ but another country perfect for selfdriving and with some great pockets of wildlife – Etosha, the Waterberg Plateau and the Skeleton Coast to name a few – not to mention the towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei and the now famous cheetah conservation project at Okonjima. If you want something a little more ‘traditional’, and good value, then it has to be East Africa. Tanzania is where many people take their once-in-a-lifetime safari, and it is an excellent choice. You are almost guaranteed to see large herds of wildebeest and zebra, together with lions, cheetahs and all of the other plains game that you might imagine. But, you will see more people on safari than you would in other safari countries and that is not for everyone.

“We have recently returned from two weeks in Zambia, which included South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Livingstone. It was the most amazing family experience in beautiful locations with abundant wildlife. This was our first safari experience and we are now definitely planning on another." Dollin family, Tailor-made holiday in Zambia, August 2019

Cheetah cubs, Ngorongoro, Tanzania

For the connoisseurs, Zambia and Botswana are the places to go. In Zambia, the Luangwa Valley and Lower Zambezi, and in Botswana the Okavango Delta, Moremi and Chobe; and both countries also have easy access to the Victoria Falls – a wonderful place to end a safari. Zambia and Botswana offer small, intimate lodges and tented camps, outstanding guiding and wildlife that goes beyond anything you might be able to imagine and (in Zambia particularly) there are a number of family-friendly lodges where you can have your own private family guide, your own chefs and your own safari schedule, for very little extra cost. So, if going on a family safari is your idea of a memorable holiday – it is mine, and I’ve just returned from a holiday to Zambia’s Luangwa Valley followed by a trip along South Africa’s Garden Route for some whale watching – then give us a call and let’s talk through some of the options with you and put together your perfect trip. Discover South Africa Families Worldwide Director, Chris Breen, gives his top tips for a tailor-made holiday in South Africa – combine a safari with whale watching, beaches and wine-tasting on the famous Garden Route.

S

Cape Town

outh Africa offers some of the best wildlife watching on the planet and I’d have to recommend the iconic Kruger National Park for fabulous wildlife viewing in a scenic landscape. However, if you’re looking for a more refined, upmarket experience, there are some fantastic private reserves bordering the Kruger – such as Sabi Sands and the Timbavati – which provide a more intimate setting and have superb lodges. Also worth considering are parks in KwaZulu-Natal such as Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve and Ithala Reserve, both of which are excellent, while the Eastern Cape game reserves are malaria-free. But while South Africa certainly offers world-class safaris, it also offers so much more for a family holiday. My personal recommendation would be to combine a safari with a selfdrive along the Garden Route. After your safari, fly to Port Elizabeth (PE as it’s affectionately known!), pick up a car and then drive in a westerly direction towards Cape Town. Self-drive in this part of South Africa and you can enjoy a host of lovely boutique hotels and B&Bs as well as lodges, and it’s a well-trodden path – it’s easy. Your first two stops could be Jeffreys Bay and Plettenberg Bay. Enjoy the beaches, go sand-boarding, explore art and craft shops or visit nature reserves – there’s plenty to see and do here for all the family. From ‘Plet’, head inland a little, where Hog Hollow is the perfect place to stay. Then drive west, perhaps spending a night in George or Knysna, before reaching De Hoop Nature Reserve, home to the magnificent Lekkerwater Beach Lodge which is situated on the coast. There’s superb land-based whale watching – for the area's annual congregations of southern right whales – all along the coast here from July through to early October, and Lekkerwater offers guided whale watching as well as nature walks and drives. In Cape Town itself, a cable-car ride up Table Mountain is a must, while some wine-tasting at the vineyards of Stellenbosch or Paarl should please the parents. Drive to Simon’s Town to see African penguins, or visit Robben Island to see where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. For the adventurous (older teenagers and young adults!), cage-diving with great white sharks is an option, or head to the Cape of Good Hope for the iconic sight of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meeting. Whatever combination you decide on, South Africa has the potential for a perfect family holiday!

NEW Discover South Africa On this self-drive holiday you will travel at your own pace along the spectacular South African coastline and Garden Route, visiting pristine beaches and looking for wildlife. Visit the laid-back surfing town of Jeffreys Bay, indigenous forests of Tsitsikamma National Park and the golden sandy beaches of Plettenberg Bay. Stay in a beachfront lodge in De Hoop Nature Reserve and watch whales from the shore. Go on a boat excursion in Hermanus in search of southern right whales before continuing to Cape Town and the Stellenbosh winelands. Age guide: 12+ Tailor-made, Jan-Dec 12 days, from £1,799 Child from £1,699

Incredible India

“Everything was a highlight, but our absolute favourite was the safaris.”

Senior Travel Consultant Sally Jefferis describes the benefits of small group and tailor-made holidays to India.

Morby family, India – Taj & Tigers, February 2019

Tigers, Bandhavgarh National Park, India

I

ndia is loud, crowded, colourful and exuberant, and for the firsttime visitor it can seem a daunting place. Hundreds of different sounds, smells and sights compete for your attention: women in saris; parakeets flying overhead; pink and yellow powder spread across pavements; roadside stalls selling myriad wares; minarets and carvings rising above 21st century buildings; motorbike and tuk-tuk drivers weaving in and out of city traffic, skilfully avoiding the sacred cows that wander across the roads. It can all seem a bit overwhelming, with no sense or order, but that’s just the way it is. However, most visitors adjust fairly quickly to the pace of life, and when you have, the rewards are astonishing – for the richness of India’s culture, wildlife, food, and its warmth are in a league of their own. The classic New Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Tiger Park route can be enjoyed as part of a small group, which helps keep the cost down

and gives you the opportunity to share the experience with likeminded families. Alternatively, we can tailor a holiday just for your family – in which case, you’ll benefit from your own, extremely knowledgeable, guide who can steer you through the craziness of Delhi, and take you to the most iconic building in India – and yes, the Taj Mahal is every bit as beautiful as it’s reputed to be. Stroll through the grand palaces of Rajasthan and witness rolling countryside, villages and hidden temples as you travel by train, then search for the elusive tiger in one of the country’s national parks. India is often described as an assault on the senses. However, if you travel with an open mind (and sense of humour!), and allow your senses to open and embrace what India has to offer, we’re confident you’ll fall in love with it as much as we have.

Japan: High-Tech to Temples Whether you’re looking for cherry blossoms and temples or an electronics nirvana, Japan is eclectic, unique and fascinating. Product Executive Rhian Purches gives some insider tips on what to include in a tailor-made holiday to this deeply family-oriented country.

Mount Fuji

I

f you have never visited Japan, I urge you to do so. Isolated from the rest of the world for over 200 years, Japanese literature, culture and traditions developed separately from the rest of the Orient and outside world. Your whole family will find something to love and be fascinated by in this truly unique country – here are some ideas to whet your appetite for a tailor-made holiday to Japan.

Top tips for what to include in your tailor-made itinerary Tokyo merits exploration and here are some of my top tips for a great few days in Japan’s vibrant capital: visit Shinjuku’s famous robot café which features a raucous, pop-culture show for diners. Enjoy the Suginami Animation Museum (and don’t forget to try the ‘voiceover’ experience), or stroll through the magnificent Meiji Park admiring its elegant shrines, then eat teppanyaki in a lively restaurant. Head to Akihabara, Tokyo’s electronics and technology district, or take the family to a ‘karaoke box’ – bring snacks and soft drinks and sing away in private. Visit a sumo stable, or Tokyo Disney; dress up and watch the firework or lantern displays if you visit in July (‘matsuri’ or festival season).

10

Travel at 320 km an hour on the bullet train to Kyoto, Japan’s cultural centre and home to over 4,000 temples and shrines of which the kinkakuju (Golden Temple) is arguably the most famous. Watch geisha show off their sumptuous costumes and graceful artistry. Everyone has heard of Japan’s famous cherry blossoms, but the practice of flower-viewing (‘hanami’) is not confined to this – also look out for iris-viewing and other events. A stay at a traditional inn (ryokan), for example in the resorts of Hakone (a hot spring resort) or Nikko (famous for its shogun shrines), is an experience the whole family will enjoy. You’ll have the chance to walk around in a light summer kimono (a yukata) and bathe in hot springs/baths (onsen), as well as sleep on a traditional futon on the floor. For the tourist, Japan is an easy, comfortable and safe place to visit, and there’s a veneer of Westernisation that makes it feel very familiar. The infrastructure is second-to-none, trains run on time, the food and drink – both exotic and familiar (pizza!) – is delicious. And the people are welcoming and helpful. What are you waiting for? Call our expert team to discuss a tailor-made holiday to Japan.

Thailand Exotic, Relaxing & Friendly Thailand is many people’s top long-haul destination. Whether you explore rainforests and islands on a group tour or opt for a tailor-made trip, it offers a relaxing and exotic getaway.

I

t’s easy to fall in love with Thailand. With a long tropical coastline and exotic bustling cities, food bursting with myriad flavours and ubiquitous smiling people, it’s many people’s favourite holiday destination. You’ll find whatever it is you’re looking for here – golden temples and underground shrines, Buddhist retreats and a chance to relax on pristine beaches, or a cruise through jagged jungle-topped islands and chance to swim in azure waters. Thailand is warm, friendly, gentle and good value – whichever holiday option you choose. As soon as you land in Bangkok you will experience the Thai smile – there’s a sense of playfulness and fun that’s deeply embedded in Thai culture and it’s infectious! Don’t worry about any language barriers, just prepare to enjoy Bangkok’s wonderful mixture of neon lights and golden-spired temples, Buddhist monks and Banyan trees, street markets and tastes that will leave your tongues tingling. Explore the city’s back lanes by bicycle, take a tuk-tuk ride, cruise along its network of canals in a traditional longtail boat, and have your fill of splendid Buddhist temples. For many, a visit to Thailand isn’t complete without a stay on one of its stunning jungle-clad islands, which are surrounded by

waters a distinctive and inviting shade of translucent teal. Phuket and Koh Samui are perhaps the most famous holiday islands. It doesn’t take long to adjust to the pace of life, which is relaxing to the point of sleepy. Enjoy long lazy days on golden-sand beaches, snorkelling and swimming in secluded bays, or relaxing in beachside restaurants and cafés watching life go by. The hustle and bustle of your normal daily life will be a distant memory in no time! From Koh Samui, explore caves and snorkel in the waters of Ang Thong Marine Park – an archipelago of jungle islands, hidden lagoons and caves. From Phuket, take a private longboat tour of Phang Nga Bay – famous for its skyscraper-like jungle-covered limestone rock formations jutting straight out of emerald-coloured sea, and which shot to fame after featuring in the 1974 James Bond Film ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’. If you are interested in a taste of traditional Thailand, then head to the mountainous north and add extra days to your tailormade holiday with a visit to Chiang Mai (or join our Hill Tribes & Elephants group tour). The city boasts hundreds of intricately designed Buddhist temples, including the 14th century temple of Wat Prah Singh, as well as vibrant markets such as Kaad Luang. A Bit of Croatian Fun With a wide-choice of activities to suit all abilities, ages and adventure levels and a good choice of low-cost flights from the UK, Croatia makes an ideal short-haul family holiday destination.

W

ell known for its historic walled capital, Dubrovnik, and the stunning island-dotted Dalmatian coast, Croatia is a fantastic holiday destination. With beautiful rivers and turquoise lagoons, subterranean tunnels and World Heritage Sites aplenty, our group trips focus on getting the whole family active in this popular Balkan country. Our Active Teen itinerary offers the perfect choice for adults and older children alike. Beginning in central Croatia just north of Split, we take an exhilarating ride on the River Cetina – rafting for 10km downstream. Next we have a chance to cycle through the beautiful countryside around the old Venetian town of Trogir, stopping in a small village en route, then relax on the lovely whitesand beach at Medena where there’s a variety of watersports to choose from. Cruising to scenic Drvenik Veli Island, we spend a couple of days swimming, snorkelling, travelling by speedboat, and kayaking around the Blue Lagoon, exploring the island of Solta and relaxing on idyllic beaches before returning to the

mainland for canyoning in Cetina Canyon. This is a perfect choice for active families who also like a bit of free time to explore by themselves – a leisure day is included in the itinerary to give you the chance to do as much or as little as you wish! Our Coastal Croatia itinerary is also based for a week in the quaint medieval fishing village of Seget Donji on the central Dalmatian coast. Suitable for children over six years old, this is a relaxing holiday focusing on enjoying the nearby islands by boat and swimming in shallow bays fringed by white-sand beaches. Explore the World Heritage Sites of Spilt and Trogir – the latter, a beautiful medieval walled town with marble streets and impressive bridges, and visit Krka National Park, famous for its 17 waterfalls and clear rivers which you can swim in. For a good value holiday in Europe – with a wide range of activities to suit every member of the family, plus scenic beaches and choice of family-friendly accommodation – Croatia is hard to beat!

Going Wild in Costa Rica Family Interview

Families Worldwide Director Nick Joynes, his wife Helen and their twin daughters Sophia and Hannah (age 7), share their memories of a fantastic family holiday in Costa Rica …

QQVery briefly, where did you go?

Nick: We visited Tortuguero, Arenal, Monterverde, Playa Hermosa and San José.

QQWhat’s special about Costa Rica?

Nick: In a nutshell, beautiful scenery and wonderful wildlife. Helen: The fact that it has both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, as well as cloud forest, rainforest and volcanoes means it has a wide range of habitats to explore, and in turn a lot of different activities on offer. Sophia: The pineapple was delicious – the best in the world! And it’s a very friendly place. Hannah: Amazing jungles where you can see a lot of animals like scarlet macaws, sloths and nine-banded armadillos. I liked the zip-lining and canoeing.

QQWhat were your highlights?

Nick: Seeing the girls appreciate the wildlife – that was great – plus the river cruises we did, and Playa Hermosa’s stunning beaches. Helen: The hanging bridges of Monteverde and zip-lining there was amazing fun. Sophia: Zip-lining in cloud forest so high up. One of the lines was 800m above the ground and we went right through a cloud! I loved seeing spider monkeys and a tarantula. Hannah: The Tarzan swing at Monteverde. I loved swimming in a waterfall and going on a tour of a cocoa farm to see how chocolate is made (and we got to eat some too).

QQWhat did you like about the accommodation?

Nick: All the places we stayed were great and family friendly. Helen: Each place we stayed at had a swimming pool which was great for the kids.

Sophia: The maids folded the towels to look like elephants, and we could swim at each hotel. Hannah: Lying in bed at Arenal looking at the volcano from my room, and swimming in the thermal springs there.

QQHave you got any tips for travelling long-haul with kids?

Nick & Helen: Give yourself a day/night to recover at the start of the trip. Always use accommodation with a swimming pool where you can. Pack a hand luggage case with two or three days’ worth of spare clothes and supplies in case the main bag gets delayed. Download plenty of films before leaving the UK. Try and get into the new time zone as soon as possible (use an App such as time-shifter to help with jet lag).

QQWould you go back?

Nick, Helen, Sophia & Hannah: Yes!

Continue to La Fortuna for a visit to a sloth sanctuary and a variety of optional sports such as kayaking, rock climbing and white water rafting. travel south to the Pacific coast where you’ll look for birds and sloths in the rainforest at Manuel Antonio before continuing to the Osa Pensinsula, a haven for wildlife watching and watersports. Age guide: 8+ Tailor-made, Jan-Dec 15 days, from £4,799 Child from £1,699

Our new tailor-made holiday to Brazil combines the Amazon, Pantanal and Rio de Janeiro – go fishing for piranha, look for jaguars and enjoy Rio’s stunning beaches.

Jaguar, Pantanal

I

f you’re looking for a South American adventure, it’s hard to beat Brazil. Home to the world’s greatest diversity of wildlife, on this new tailor-made trip you’ll explore the Amazon jungle and Pantanal wetland by jeep, canoe and on foot, looking for jaguars, river dolphins, colourful birdlife and piranha. If your family is interested in wildlife, indigenous cultures and has a sense of adventure, Brazil makes an excellent choice for a holiday. Starting in Manaus, the gateway to the Amazon, you’ll spend three nights in a jungle lodge, heading out by day and night on rainforest walks and by canoe to explore trails and narrow channels in search of a dazzling array of wildlife including tapir, river dolphins, monkeys, deer, giant river otters and the world’s largest rodent, the capybara. The Amazon’s 1,300 or so bird species include colourful macaws which gather in flocks more than a thousand-strong, while the best known of its 3,000 fish species is the infamous piranha. You’ll make a trip to see the confluence of the Negro and Solimões Rivers, and meet a native Amazonian who will explain the jungle’s many medicinal plants and give an insight into the life of the people who live here. From there you head south-east to Bonito, an area blessed with lush forest, crystal clear rivers, waterfalls, lakes and stalactite-filled caves. During your two-night stay, you’ll have a chance to snorkel in the Olho d’Agua tributary in glistening turquoise water amongst hundreds of fish, and visit a sinkhole inhabited by red-and-blue macaws. Along with the Amazon rainforest, Brazil’s other natural wonder is the Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland. Rare and endangered species such as the jaguar, hyacinth macaw and giant river otter all live here, as well as tapir, owls and alligators,

making it a paradise for naturalists, photographers and ecotourists. On this tour you stay for two nights in the southern Pantanal which you’ll explore by canoe and jeep, go on an exciting night safari, and fish for piranha. Mexico’s Friendly Grey Whales Families Worldwide Director, Chris Breen, describes the thrill of coming eye to eye with the friendly grey whales of Mexico’s San Ignacio Lagoon on our new tailor-made holiday.

Y

Grey whale, San Ignacio Lagoon

ou don’t have to go into Outer Space, or voyage to the bottom of the deepest ocean to do something truly extraordinary. Just go to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and meet the ‘friendly’ grey whales of San Ignacio. Every year, between January and April, this lagoon becomes a sanctuary for hundreds of grey whales which come to breed and raise their young before their long journey north. We’ve been there as a family, and this new trip allows you to experience its magic first hand. Although the term ‘friendly’ risks anthropomorphising these impressive creatures, it’s hard to interpret their behaviour here in any other way, as they freely engage with their delighted visitors. You’ll make twice-daily boat trips into the lagoon to encounter these friendly cetaceans up close. And there’s no need to go looking for the whales – the females push their calves to the boats to have their noses, chins and baleen scratched. The calves take turns spyhopping in front of each person, sometimes refusing to move on to the next until they’ve had some attention! To see grey whales is one thing, to interact with them is another, but to have so many whales around the boat wanting to play with you that you don’t know where to turn, is in a different league altogether. It is probably the greatest whale watching spectacle on Earth and what better way to enjoy it than with your family? It’s an incredibly emotional experience for everyone, and I can guarantee you’ll be talking about it for years to come. Accompanied by experienced guides and boat captains you’ll stay in ‘cabanas’ at a peaceful, rural camp from which you’ll make boat trips to meet and learn about the whales and their habitat. In the evening, there may be a presentation from one of the guides, followed by a home-cooked meal and some superlative stargazing – to a soundtrack of whale blows from the lagoon and coyotes calling in the desert. It doesn’t get much better than this!

NEW Whales of Baja Family Adventure This tour is based for five nights at the outstanding location of San Ignacio Cabanas, which provides rustic yet comfortable accommodation overlooking San Ignacio Lagoon. Make twice-daily excursions out onto the lagoon in the company of expert local guides, for some incredible encounters with grey whale mothers and their calves.

Highlights: ཀྵཀྵ Get close to friendly grey whale mothers & calves ཀྵཀྵ Enjoy daily boat excursions into San Ignacio Lagoon ཀྵཀྵStay in the desert Age guide: 7+ Tailor-made, Jan-Apr 7 days, from £1,799 Child from £1,699
