Photography Tours & Workshops

Welcome

We hope you enjoy our latest seasonal brochure, which is packed with ideas to inspire your Wildlife Photography holidays for 2020 and beyond. In this issue, wildlife photographer Nick Garbutt eludes to the magic of a photography safari in the Masai Mara, outside of the migration season, and Bret Charman talks about photographing some of Africa’s more unusual wildlife in Tswalu Private Game Reserve in South Africa, including species such as pangolin, aardvark and caracal. We are constantly looking for new and exciting Photography Tours and Workshops to add to our collection, as well as new expert leaders … and our portfolio continues to expand as a result. We’ve included a guide to help you plan your next exciting photographic adventure in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Our Photography Tours At Wildlife Worldwide, we offer over 35 dedicated small group Photography Tours and Workshops to suit all abilities. Our collection of holidays has been designed to offer the perfect combination of outstanding wildlife viewing, exceptional photography opportunities and expert tuition. All of our holidays are led by expert photographers, most of whom are award-winning and/or work as professional photographers, and have a wealth of technical skills and field experience.

What to Expect on a Wildlife Worldwide Photography Tour

On all our Photography Tours, you will have plenty of opportunity to develop your technical skills through a series of informal workshops ‘in the field’. Suitable for all levels, from basic to advanced, the workshops cover a variety of photographic techniques and skills relevant to the subject matter and/or particular habitat. Expert photographic leaders will offer as much one-to-one time and tuition as is feasible, and the pace of the trips is such that there is ample time to get the most from the photographic potential of each location visited.

Masai Mara

Workshop with Nick Garbutt Nick Garbutt introduces his new Masai Mara Photo Workshop. From the comfort of an intimate private cottage, this workshop will allow unrivalled photographic opportunities of some of Africa's finest wildlife.

T

here are few more iconic wildlife photography destinations than Kenya's Masai Mara. This relatively small area constitutes the northern extreme of the vast Mara-Serengeti ecosystem that is arguably the most biologically rich and productive region on the planet. The ‘Mara’ is famed for its approachable big cats – beautiful dark-maned lions, lithe and graceful leopards, elegant cheetahs – and a wonderful diversity of grazing and browsing species, but is also renowned for smaller unobtrusive delights, like servals, jackals, klipspringer and steenbok. The birdlife too is phenomenal, both in diversity and visibility offering fabulous photographic potential.. However, in some respects the Masai Mara Game Reserve has become a victim of its own popularity and success with large numbers of visitors causing overcrowding issues that undoubtedly compromises the wildlife experience, especially where photography is concerned. The story is very different in the private concessions that border the main reserve. In these, the number of visitors is strictly limited, ensuring seclusion, while the wildlife remains equally diverse and abundant. The timing of these workshops is also noteworthy. We have specifically chosen a ‘shoulder’ season in the Mara, to further reduce the likelihood of encountering crowds, but this is not to say the wildlife encounters and photography will be in any way compromised. The migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra will be absent, but the Mara has a vast array of animals that remain resident throughout the year and while in the concession areas we will have the full flexibility to drive ‘off road’ in order to gain the best positions and angles for capturing memorable images. For these workshops, we will have the exclusive use of a small private cottage (just four guest rooms) bordering the main reserve and two of the best private concessions in the northern Mara. The cottage is immediately adjacent to prime leopard and lion territories and within easy reach of other renowned areas for cheetah and serval as well as all the usual and expected herbivores like elephants, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and topi. Spending seven nights at the cottage, we will have ample time to explore all the best areas for photography and combine extensive 'field' time, with all required and necessary tuition time while at the cottage. The cottage has its own chef and staff and we will be able to orchestrate the daily routine during our stay to maximise and optimise our field and prime photography time. We will also have exclusive use of open vehicles, with plenty of space for those wishing to bring large amounts of photography equipment including long telephoto lenses.

South Africa’s

Rare Mammals Join Bret Charman on our new dedicated photography tour to Tswalu Private Game Reserve, in South Africa, to photograph some of Africa’s more elusive wildlife.

I

have a deep and profound love of Africa. The stunning and varied landscapes, exceptional wildlife and the vibrant cultures all fill me with joy and intrigue. My addiction to photographing Africa’s rich natural history is immediately apparent and it is the unusual species which particularly appeal to me. In fact, my favourite mammal on planet Earth is the African wild dog, but when I heard of a place where you can see (and photograph) pangolin, aardvark, brown hyena, caracal, meerkats and wild dog all in one day, it sounded like dream. Happily, for all involved, Tswalu Private Game Reserve is not a myth. This vast protected area (South Africa’s largest private reserve), is the perfect place to photograph mammals that are rarely seen across the African continent. The obvious photographic highlights include the opportunity to capture images of ground pangolin and aardvark, possibly even on foot. There is so much more on offer though. We have two private vehicles, which allow us unrivalled access across the entire reserve, enabling us to maximise the light on offer and capture an array of remarkable images of these undoubted stars. Why are these usually nocturnal species active during the day I hear you ask? Well quite simply, the nights are too cold and so they venture out during daylight hours to feed – the wildlife wins and so do we.

Even after darkness falls there is the possibility to enjoy the natural wonders of Tswalu, whether we enjoy the magic of a night drive or spend some time photographing the stars from the lodge. The night skies here are among the finest in the world, utterly breathtaking, and the cool clean air is perfect for photography. So if, like me, you are looking for an Africa that few are familiar with, an Africa filled with dream-like species and wondrous photography opportunities, it is essential you join me for our South Africa’s Rare Mammals Photo Safari in 2021 and 2022.

NEW South Africa's Rare Mammals Photo Safari Accompanied by award-winning photographer Bret Charman, this small group photo safari ventures to Tswalu Private Game Reserve in South Africa. The reserve is arguably the best destination in Africa to photograph ground pangolin, brown hyena and aardvark. 2 Jul 2021 & 11 Jun 2022 10 days, from £9,995

Other species are sure to delight, habituated families of meerkats are always a rewarding subject, while brown hyena, caracal and aardwolf help to add to the more unusual photographic subjects. More familiar species include, wild dog, cheetah, lion, mountain zebra, greater kudu and oryx (gemsbok). As mentioned earlier, the key element of this trip is having two private vehicles that allow us complete flexibility. We can go where we like, when we like, we can dictate what we want to do each day and spend as long as we like with any given subject. Each day we will endeavour to be out at first light, ensuring we maximise the soft light and returning to the comfort of our private lodge when the exquisite light, or our subject, disappears. Likewise, in the afternoons we will make sure that we are with our chosen subject for when the light is at its best, before returning to the lodge to warm ourselves in front of the fire and enjoy our evening meal. With certain species it may be possible to spend a prolonged period of time on foot, allowing us the chance to get low to the ground and capture images that would otherwise be impossible. We will work very closely with our private guides and trackers to ensure that not only do we get the best images, but that the wildlife is not disturbed by our presence. With all of this in mind, it is possible to use everything from wide-angle to telephoto lenses. It really is the ultimate wildlife photography destination.

Wildlife Photography Competition Now Open!

W

e are delighted to launch our wildlife photography competition for 2020! After the success of our 2019 competition, we are extremely excited to see your fantastic

wildlife photos.

You can enter any of the incredible photos you have taken of wildlife from all around the world, from the wonderful world of macro to ocean giants. The competition is completely free to enter and open to everyone (you don't need to have taken the images on a Wildlife Worldwide holiday). There are three categories to choose from and entering the competition is easy – simply visit the website: www.wildlifeworldwidephotographycompetition.com, read the guidelines and entry requirements, and upload your images. We can’t wait to see them!

Wildlife Portrait Enter an image that captures the essence of any animal species to win. It should be powerful imagery that invokes an instant connection between the subject and the person viewing the image.

Animal Action Enter an image that captures a unique aspect of animal behaviour, or an incredible moment in nature, to win this challenging category – it could be a bird in flight or a pack of wild dogs on the hunt.

Wildlife Portfolio Enter between 8 and 12 images from a single destination (from one of our listed destinations), of the same animal or group of animals with a similar underlying theme to win what is arguably the most difficult category.

The winner of each category will receive a £250 voucher from Rohan Clothing, while the overall winner (selected from the three category winners) will receive a further £250 voucher from Rohan and a pair of Opticron Savanna R PC binoculars. You have until Friday 20 November 2020 to enter your images into each category. Good luck!
