Welcome We hope you enjoy our latest seasonal brochure, which is packed with ideas to inspire your Wildlife Photography holidays for 2019 and beyond. In this issue, wildlife photographer Bret Charman describes the thrill of getting close to wild dogs and African elephants on foot in Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park. Professional photographer Tom Mason shares his tips on capturing images of bears in Finland’s northern boreal forests, Nick Garbutt writes about photographing tigers on our new tour to central India, and we also have an article on how to build an impressive portfolio of Britain’s most charismatic bird – the puffin. We are constantly looking for new and exciting Photography Tours and Workshops to add to our collection, as well as new expert leaders … and our portfolio continues to expand as a result. We’ve included a calendar of 2019 and 2020 tours, as well as a seasonal guide to help you plan your next exciting photographic adventure.

Our Photography Tours At Wildlife Worldwide, we offer over 35 dedicated small group Photography Tours and Workshops to suit all abilities. Our collection of holidays has been designed to offer the perfect combination of outstanding wildlife viewing, exceptional photography opportunities and expert tuition. All of our holidays are led by expert photographers, most of whom are award-winning and/or work as professional photographers, and have a wealth of technical skills and field experience.

What to Expect on a Wildlife Worldwide Photography Tour On all our Photography Tours, you will have an opportunity to develop your technical skills through a series of informal workshops ‘in the field’. Suitable for all levels from basic to advanced, the workshops cover a variety of photographic techniques and skills relevant to the subject matter and/or particular habitat. Expert photographic leaders will offer as much one-to-one time and tuition as is feasible, and the pace of the trips is such that there is ample time to get the most from the photographic potential of each location visited.

Magical Mana Pools Wild Dogs & Elephants Photography

Wildlife photographer Bret Charman describes highlights from our inaugural trip to Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park, which included eye-to-eye encounters with wild dogs and photographing African elephants on foot!

T

he first time I saw an African wild dog was in a BBC wildlife documentary in the early 90s. I was instantly struck by their dynamism and beauty, and ‘painted wolves’ have been close to my heart ever since. If you watched the recent BBC Dynasties series then perhaps you are now also intrigued by them? So, thanks to Sir David Attenborough I had fallen in love with the African wild dog at a tender age. Naturally, as a wildlife photographer, I was keen to see and capture images of these charismatic canines for myself. The only downside is that they are not the easiest of Africa’s predators to photograph and, despite working in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park after finishing my degree, I only ever caught fleeting glimpses of these stunning creatures. A couple of years ago I started to hear reports of what sounded like a wild dog paradise. If you follow the mighty Zambezi River from Victoria Falls and head eastwards, you will come to Lake Kariba. From here, you head north-east along the Zambezi and eventually you come to Mana Pools National Park – and the stories I was hearing, about coming face-to-face with wild dogs, elephants and lions in this park fuelled my wanderlust. I had to go there, to see if the stories were true. I have spent a great deal of time in many different parts of Africa over the years, including Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, and I can honestly say that a safari in Mana Pools is unlike any other – once you have been to this park, it gets a grip on your imagination and senses. On our inaugural trip in October 2018, we spent seven nights in Mana Pools and each day provided fantastic memories. It’s tough to pick just one to write about in this article, but here goes. It was our second evening in the park and we were on a game drive with our guide, Nick Murray, who led the BBC’s Dynasties film crew for 22 months. We had seen wild dogs in the morning and so were able to find the pack again with relative ease (wild dogs aren’t usually active during the heat of the day and so, if you arrive in the late afternoon, they are usually sound asleep). We approached on foot to within 20 metres or so, letting them get used to our presence. As the dogs started to wake from their siesta, the whole pack began renewing their social bonds with one another. They chatter incessantly as they play and on this occasion the dogs were particularly boisterous. As they continued to bounce and trot across the dusty landscape, it became clear why Mana Pools National Park is such a rewarding and atmospheric place for the photographer.

4

You might have noticed that photographers are always talking about light, and in terms of its visually pleasing light effects – range, depth, hues, vistas, clarity (I could go on) – Mana Pools is simply in a league of its own. As the sun sets, golden shafts of light pierce the open woodland canopy and, if you find a subject in the right place, at the right time, there is no better place to be for a photographer. The dogs’ play intensified while the setting sun painted a dusty scene behind them, with the fire-like hues of orange enveloping the pack (see main image). It gave me goosebumps all over. This was only one of many special moments we shared with the alpha female, Black-tip, and her family. We watched the dogs hunt, evade elephants and play with one another time and again. Even watching the dogs as they slept was a wonderful experience, eliciting a feeling of intimacy that is hard to put into words. What makes Mana Pools such a remarkable place, is that you feel like an invisible visitor into the animals’ world and are easily able to approach the dogs on foot. The best moments are when the dogs forget you are there and simply walk right past you. The pure joy, the adrenaline rush, as a wild predator walks within a few metres of you, is unlike anything else I have ever felt. ‘Magical Mana Pools’ – that should be the park’s name, for it is truly magical. Join Bret for the ultimate African wildlife photography safari on our 11-day Photography Tour to Mana Pools National Park in October 2019.

Tiger Trails with Nick Garbutt

Our new photography tour to central India’s Bandhavgarh and Kanha National Parks provides the perfect opportunity to photograph tigers. Award-winning wildlife photographer Nick Garbutt describes the trip’s highlights ...

N

owhere is quite like India. The subcontinent serves up a continuous and compelling assault on the senses, and few places are more evocative than its ancient forests and meadows.

hang over the damper meadows creating conditions with more evocative photographic potential and prolonged quality light. By concentrating on these two renowned parks, our Tiger Trails tour aims to maximise the very best tiger photography opportunities, as well as plenty of other species.

Soft shards of light spear through the forest in the early morning, enveloping the canopy in a dappled shroud of orange, gold and ochre. No other animal sets the pulse racing quite like a tiger, and there is an intense, charged excitement when the alarm calls of monkeys and deer break the silence.

Join Nick for the ultimate tiger photography safari on our new 16-day Tiger Trails tour in February 2020.

It is over a quarter of a century since I saw a wild tiger in India for the first time, and the exhilaration and thrill of that moment is etched in my mind forever. Luckily, seeing a tiger in the wild is still relatively attainable at several of India’s renowned reserves, though seeing and photographing them can be a challenge. My favourite central Indian reserve is Kanha National Park in the Satpura range; strictly enforced speed limits have greatly improved the tiger watching experience and some of my best tiger encounters have occurred here. Bandhavgarh is another favourite of mine, and well known for its tiger viewing. Both parks also support a broad diversity of other wildlife, especially large mammals including leopard, sloth bear, Indian wild dog, gaur and sambar.

NEW India: Tiger Trails & Wildlife Photography with Nick Garbutt 5 Feb 2020 16 days, from £5,595

Time of year is also an important consideration when planning a trip. Many choose to visit India during spring (March to May) when air temperatures are higher, vegetation is drying out and it starts to get dusty. However, I prefer late winter, when the forests are more atmospheric. Early mornings are cold, and mists often

Festival of Wildlife

Spitsbergen Join us in May 2020 for a chartered voyage to the remote and icy realm of Spitsbergen which has been timed to maximise our chances of encountering and photographing polar bears on the pack-ice.

T

he chance to join a polar voyage is always an exciting prospect. However, combine a cruise to the High Arctic in the company of a team of expert naturalists, award-winning photographers and experienced expedition crew, at the best time of year for seeing polar bears – our primary focus – and you have the ingredients for a magical, once-in-a lifetime, polar voyage. And this is exactly what we are offering in May 2020. We have chosen to travel in May in order to maximise the amount of time we can spend amongst the pack-ice and therefore increase our chances of seeing the most iconic Arctic species of all – the magnificent polar bear. Spitsbergen and the surrounding islands and pack-ice are home to one of the world’s highest populations of polar bears. Each year, when the pack-ice begins to break up, bears head to the mainland to spend the summer on shore. Individuals are often seen from expedition vessels and, if we are very fortunate, they may even approach the vessel. Spitsbergen’s spectacular coastline is characterised by glaciers flowing into the sea, such as the impressive Monaco Glacier – a favourite feeding spot for thousands of kittiwakes. The island’s high cliffs provide refuge for thousands of little auks, as well as Brünnich’s guillemot and Atlantic puffin. It is also possible to see long-tailed skua, northern fulmar, king eider, ivory gull, snow bunting, black guillemot, and Arctic terns which migrate between the two poles every year. Arctic foxes patrol around the base of cliffs, hoping to chance upon an injured auk or early chick, while reindeer browse the mossy tundra.

The rich seas around Svalbard are equally impressive and home to a wealth of marine life, including blue, fin and humpback whales plus beluga, pinnipeds such as harbour, ringed and bearded seas as well as walrus. We will be accompanied throughout by our own Festival of Wildlife team, who, in addition to helping us search for the region’s famed wildlife inhabitants, will deliver a unique series of talks, presentations, workshops and master classes. Join our experts for this chartered voyage in search of polar bears in May 2020.

Bear Photography with Tom Mason

Professional photographer Tom Mason will be leading our new dedicated bear photography tour to Finland’s boreal forests in July. Find out more about Tom and the trip below …

I

’ve been lucky enough to shoot assignments all around the world, from the Falklands to the Amazon. However, bears have always had a special place in my heart and so I’m excited to be heading back to Finland to lead this dedicated bear photography tour in July 2019. I love spending long hours in the field searching for and watching wildlife, but the most rewarding part of tour leading is helping others to improve their photography skills and get the best images they can from the amazing locations and wildlife around them. On this trip to Finland we will be focusing on photographing bears and wolverine, two incredible predators of the Finnish wilderness. Long nights in the hides should provide numerous excellent opportunities for photography, as well as a chance to experiment and create a portfolio of images to be proud of. During the tour we will discuss the fundamentals of wildlife photography, such as composition, camera techniques and creative ways to produce images. During downtime periods I’ll help participants review images and offer post-processing tips for those who are interested. There’s plenty of personal tuition on hand, whatever level you are. This tour involves ‘working’ through the night, with extended periods (10 or more hours at a time) spent in small hides in order to make the most of our photographic opportunities. Our efforts will, no doubt, be rewarded with some incredible images to return home with after our exciting encounters in the Finnish wilderness. Join Tom in Finland’s boreal forests this July to photograph brown bears from purpose-built hides.
