I read that you have produced a staggering 500 songs and recorded over 150 of them, which is truly amazing. Tell me about how you write. Do you have a studio or sit in a garden for inspiration? I write anywhere; sometimes, a song comes to me even when I'm driving, so I repeat the lyrics over and over again to embed them into my mind. Occasionally, I can't sleep; I have access to my recording studio and even have a sofa to relax if I need to. I write quickly and never second guess myself. Technology provides valuable tools to aid creativity, and so I use an App that often helps. Is success in your industry all about who you know or about creating a social media presence?

"Beware of sharks who promise you the earth, never give money upfront sign exclusives or give your music away for free". Social media is very time consuming; you need to be consistent, and it's something that you can do yourself. It's freely accessible, so it should be considered to be more of a tool. As far as publicity for songwriters, there's enough love to go around. More avenues exist for young aspiring talent other than being in the right place at the right time. TikTok, in particular, is a great way to engage with an audience, but there are other credible platforms for this industry to include; Instagram, Spotify and Soundcloud. Find some that works for you; as I mentioned before, use the tools available to increase exposure. Do you have to wear many hats; business, creative, writer and singer?

ff

fi

I think that goes without saying, it's very much part of the new now, but it has to be noted that you have more control and fewer people need to take elements of your earnings because of it. Although there are many hats to wear, making music should be your primary objective.

What is a Topline songwriter? There are four or ve di erent types of writers; Topline means that you can listen to any music and create another melody based around it with a vocal focus. Often this means more collaborations and generates more opportunities.

The changing face of the music industry.

What are the origins of the name, DiDs music?

Years ago, it was all based on publishers, record labels and recording studios, to name a few taking their cut. Artists would always hope to make money, but they only got a small slice of what was left.

Di is short for Dianne, which I never liked; my husband is from South Africa, so I fused a part of his surname to it and came up with the name.

Music was a passion; I entered the arena because I loved music, not for money. My transition from poetry to music was an evolution from the age of six to seventeen.

You started your career at a very

From humble beginnings, Di wrote over 500 songs, recording over 150 of them to date. Working with session singers and artists enabled DiDs music to release music worldwide.

fl

early age; what was it like to be in the music industry at that time?

When I was eleven years old, my father was a DJ, and I listened to everything from classical music to rock. At the age of seventeen, I would help him set up at pub venues. Prince was actually my strongest in uence. His music taught me that if I put my mind to it, I could achieve anything. Music doesn’t come with an age restriction, so you can get involved at any age. You chose to follow a path into the music industry; what did people think about your decision? Everyone was very accepting, it seemed to be a natural progression for me. I can remember that my father had a room lled with records. The

in uence was strong; they could see my transition from poems to writing music.

My husband is my biggest fan, his support was always there and still is today. at support was critical to my self belief as a developing artist and still is today.

SPOTLIGHT

One of the perks of writing for a living is that no two days are the same; I get to speak to talented people from all walks of life. I managed to catch up with Di, the topline songwriter, producer and composer behind DiDs music.

fl

SPOTLIGHT

It would be best if you were very con dent and thick-skinned. Rejection is something that you have to learn to accept in this industry. Carry on, always pick yourself up, and forge forward.

How would people in the music industry describe your voice?

Your catalogue is extensive. Do you have a favourite?

I think that they would say that it's soulful with a low range. The following track

One of my favourites is Summer Vibes.

was taken from the track; Take You. I sing in the second verse, which is rare these days.

What does the future look like for DiDs Music? Creating my record label would be the future for me; it would be a natural evolution of my story. I think my dream would resonate with young artists who need a path to be de ned for them to follow. You completed a BA Honours in electronic music production. You're so academically grounded. How much of what you do depends on the theory? Learning the theory is very important, at least it was in my case. I apply the theory every day. I plan to return to university in January 2022 to do a Masters in Music Business. This decision is to help me run my music label more e ciently. Although education is essential to me personally, making music has always been

This star shines bright. A conversation with Michael.D.Dugz.

By Sanj Saigal

A successful career in acting, the origins of which started with the Church. Earning a BA in performing arts and appearances in iconic big and small-screen productions, his story is both inspiring and motivational.

Michael.D.Dugz. The story of a man who is on a

permanent learning curve.

CHAPTER BEGIN?

It was late on a Thursday night; I couldn't sleep, so I decided to ick through my phone. Scrolling through Instagram, Michael's account jumped out at me for some unknown reason. Subconsciously I think it could have been his name that drew interest. With over 3.4K followers and an actor, I wanted to reach out.

When I rst started this magazine in 2020, I had in mind that I wanted to interview people who could facilitate change, an in uence that could impact lives and, on some level, set a standard that others would strive to reach.

There was no hesitation in piecing a message together; I have to admit that after the send button was pressed, I placed it on a table as there was little or no chance of a response. It was the following day, about 4 pm, when I received a message from Michael. I was surprised and excited that he got in touch.

As this interview unfolds, I hope to take you on a journey to understand why his story needed to be told.

Was your dream unusual?

In my case, it was natural; I had the backing of my parents, they both supported me when I attended drama club. There was no discussion, and they could see that I was taking it very seriously. That support mechanism was essential, and I feel blessed that I had it.

Is your industry based on luck or skill?

That's a good question; luck does have a lot to do with it. Being at the right place at the right time still plays its place. That said, you can in uence this; you need to throw a lot up in the air. It's more of a numbers game. You need to increase the odds in order to experience success.

Like most in his profession, he initially followed a traditional path working as a waiter, bartender and barista. He saw this as good grounding and an excellent way to network.

I found a purpose

in God’s plan. For me my faith played a huge in uence.

Are you born with talent? Everyone is talented, and some are better suited to a particular path. The training helped me to nurture my talent and understand more about the different layers.

What motivates you?

A HIGHER POWER

We all have faith, some more than others and in countless forms. The Church is where chapter one of his story begins.

My faith plays a signi cant path; I have always believed in a higher power. My mother and father are also strong motivators, and I'm blessed to have them both in my story

How did acting nd you?

How would your peers describe you?

Like so many, there was a powerful in uence from artists like Prince and Michael Jackson. I saw acting as a profession when so many back in the day didn't. I had applied to drama school, but I was in a gap year and was away when the letter of acceptance arrived in the post. That was probably one of those moments that could have altered my timeline.

Loud!, extrovert, fearless and I love collaborating His personality would reinforce those qualities; you couldn't help but notice how those qualities were re ected in his work. You have been blessed to feature in Fantastic beasts. Was this a milestone for you

.

.

Missing that letter must have been fate, he was a true Londoner, and the irony was that he was away. As the interviewer, I could sense that this one fact played a big part in his life. It was a series of events that would see Michael fuse naturally with acting, dancing and singing.

fl

fl

A successful career in acting, the origins of which started with the Church. Quali ed to degree level and appearances in iconic big and small-screen productions, his story is both inspiring and motivational.

Every project was a masterclass; I was surrounded by talent. Being involved with projects like Tarzan and in the presence of stars like Jude law was a learning process for me.

MIC STARGAZER - GENERAL RELEASE 2021 (TBC)

HAEL D. DOUGLAS

A diverse career that would see Michael evolving into the person he is today. He facilitated change and creates opportunities. He is a highly respected actor who considers that he is on a permanent learning curve. His want and need to be at the top of his game is inspiring.

The pandemic had a profound impact on every sector. How would you describe the situation now? Firstly, there is no going back to the way things were in the short term. This horri c time has shown my industry that you can have a remote presence. We could see this throughout every industry going forward. That said, there will always be a value in having a physical presence, so I think a hybrid between these two styles will be commonplace. Society has to embrace change to move forward; my thoughts are with those families who have had to endure the pain of loss and adapt to a di erent way of working. But, unfortunately, it only compounds the pressures we have every day. You have a BA in performing arts. How much of the theory do you apply in your career? The theory is fused into everything that I do and in uences the decisions I take, the approach I use, and I think it's something that is needed. It poses questions, provides direction and helps to identify. Which is better, experience or education? When you're young, you have very few responsibilities. That's the time you should take advantage of as there is not much to do and time is on your side. One isn't better than the other, and some people don't have the luxury of studying due to their circumstances, but I would say that education o ers a plan B just in case something goes wrong. I will always have value for wanting to learn more, and these days information is free and accessible online, so keep current and keep learning new things all the time.

I would say that talent is more important than looks. I know a few females in the industry who are incredibly talented and are not as popping as the other pretty female artists.

I'm not going to lie when Cardi B and other female rappers like Mulatto and Meghan the stallion were rising in popularity within the music industry; I got inspired by their talent, so I kept on writing until I elevated my writing song skills. It's always been in me; it just took a push.

Although both are a plus, especially for females, you get many perks for being "pretty" because, in the industry, the truth is, a male artist can go on stage and perform, be ugly as hell, and people would still listen to his song. But, on the other hand, a female has to work harder in terms of presence, demeanour and talent! •Is there an age limit on an artist, or can you just keep going?

•How much of what you do is dependent on social media? A lot because when people are watching, talking and engaging in whatever you do, not only is your work is recognized and heard, you are expanding your business and crafts, so I depend on social media to develop and expand my presence. There is no age to being an artist because you'll always have that talent no matter if you are young or old; it's in you. So if you have a dream believe in it and do it no matter what age you are.

•Is your industry ooded with talent or the opposite?

Breaking stereotypes I'm passionate about everything that I do. However, I have a mixed bag of skills, and I intend to build a credible and sustainable brand.

•Why did you start a career in music? I wanted to express my feelings in a very creative way, so I started looking up YouTube beats and began writing songs; there was little belief that I could do it. Finally, however, persistence and determination gave me direction. Since that defining moment, a significant change in my life took place, and I have never looked back.

•Do new artists have to be talented or just look good in photos? I would say that talent is more important than looks. I know a few

I'm not going to lie when Cardi B and other female rappers like Mulatto and Meghan the stallion were rising in popularity within the music industry; I got inspired by their talent, so I kept on writing until I elevated my writing song skills. It's always been in me; it just took a push. Skills can be dormant, especially within young talent. My advice would be to focus on role models and find your motivation to succeed.

•How much of what you do is dependent on social media? A lot because when people are watching, talking and engaging in whatever you do, not only is your work is recognized and heard, you are expanding your business and crafts, so I depend on social media to develop and expand my presence.

Platforms such as Instagram create a platform for me to express myself and engage with followers. A global reach is a unique feature, and that's very valuable, especially when you have something to say.

I couldn't miss the fact that you were recently in The South Bank with some models and a professional photographer. What type of photos were you taking? I can't tell you too much about that, but we have new products, and we wanted some photos that represented the products we sell and the people who wear them. We made the decision to work with everyday people, not models. These girls were selected from a call out that we did, they had no modelling experience but were perfect for our brand. I love London, always have, so finding a location that complimented my brand made sense. The South Bank is such an expressive area, full of colour and offers diversity.

ALESIA FEDORENKO MAKEUP IS MY ART

With over 60k followers on Instagram and a notable career, Alesia Fedorenko brings a unique style with adventurous colours that have

fi

now de ned her brand.

At what age did you want to become a makeup artist?

It was ten years ago when I was studying at University while working as a model. Then, I realised that my work impacted fashion shows and photoshoots. It was a wonderful feeling to know that my work was recognised positively and that motivated me. Although my industry was very fast-changing, I realised then that creativity and design played a part. My grounding at University gave me the opportunity at such a young age to apply the theory.

Did your parents support your decision, or did they want you to follow a traditional route for education? I was very fortunate to have had the backing of my parents; they supported my decisions and trusted my judgement. I realise that I didn't follow a traditional educational route, and to have my parents blessings in my choices definitely helped me develop a successful career. A support mechanism can make all the difference to someone as it did with me.

Moving country influenced me. Most people believe that the best Masters Degree in Beauty is obtained from Russia. I think moving from Belarus to Russia gave me the push that I needed and, in turn, motivated me to forge a career from my passion.

How has the makeup industry changed in the last ve years?

It has taken a giant leap forward. It's more accessible today, so much information has moved online. You can find this information easy to digest, and it's a skill that can be studied on the internet anywhere in the world. New brands and products are emerging on the marketplace, so there is so much more choice. In addition, social media platforms

give females the opportunity to use makeup services more frequently.

If you had a time machine and could meet a younger version of yourself, what advice would you give? "Listen to your heart".

Your name has been associated with many models; if I asked them to describe you as a person, what would they say? They would tell you that I love using bright colours and luminous makeup that is eye-catching and memorable. I'm never afraid to be creative and am known for creating unique designs within my sector.

Looking at the images on your Instagram account, I can see that you are bold with both colours and creativity.

Are those traits (being bold and creative) skills that you're born with or something that has evolved over the years?

Alesia is an extraordinarily talented and highly educated professional with a strong work ethic and a desire to keep learning. With over 60k followers on Instagram and a notable career, she brings a unique style with adventurous colours that have now defined her brand. We talk to the Russian based businesswoman, mentor and influencer about her journey.

These skills came with experience; time was my teacher. There was a time I was afraid to use black, for example, and experience taught me to adapt and apply.

What was your most challenging project, and why? The most energy-consuming and challenging project for me is creating an online training course, which is taking place right now. Work started before the project gained momentum. Although it's out of my comfort zone, it requires an investment of time, energy and effort. I'm glad that my team launched it, and this is now ongoing.

We all strive for a work/ life balance; what do you like to do in your spare time to disconnect from work?

I love reading books, travelling, being surrounded by nature. I also go to the gym, box and take drawing lessons.

One of the most striking features of what you do is focusing on a model's natural attributes: hair colour, skin tones and bone structure. Would you say those factors are essential in choosing the correct look and why? I like using certain types of models; I'm very selective and involved in the selection process. In many respects, the model's energy is an influencing factor.

We all live in a fast-paced global society with an ageing population. But does age have any bearing on being an in uencer? In my opinion, each age is beautiful in its way, and you need to appreciate and celebrate the age you are now. However, I'm not convinced that it has any bearing on what you do.

If a book was written about you, what would it be called?

fl

Alesia In Wonderland.

What does the future hold for your brand? I would love to celebrate having 100k followers as my milestone.
