Correction It has come to the attention of The Oracle that the Oct. 6 article entitled “NYU Professor Talks Trigger Warnings on Campus” misattributed two claims to Cliff Kincaid, director of investigative journalism for Accuracy in Media. Mr. Kincaid has not claimed that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya nor that the LGBTQIA+ community is responsible for global warming.

The following apology was issued on Oct. 11, 2016 to Mr. Kincaid on behalf of The New Paltz Oracle editorial board: Dear Mr. Kincaid, I want to clarify a sentence in my article on Oct. 6, “NYU Professor Talks Trigger Warnings on Campus.” There seems to be some misinterpretation on my part about past statements you have made, namely that, “President Barack Obama was born in Kenya and that the LGBTQIA+ community

is responsible for global warming.”

Misinterpreting a web page detailing your past statements on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s website, I incorrectly attributed those aforementioned claims to you and for that I apologize. It was not my intention to misrepresent you and there was certainly no intent behind it.

To be clear, I am at fault and take responsibility for my mistake. I take great pride in my work as

an aspiring journalist and it has been a humbling experience to make a mistake of this degree. We will make the necessary corrections to the article and work to improve our factchecking process for the future.

I look forward to your appearance on campus for the rescheduled debate with Steve Rendall on Oct. 20.

Menacing Clowns in the Hudson Valley

According to IBTtimes.com, the first clown sighting was on August 29, 2016. Residents at the Fleetwood Manor Apartments in Greenville County, South Carolina, report that a person wearing a clown costume had been spotted lurking around the apartment complex trying to convince children to come into the woods.

Several public safety concerns have risen up in the Hudson Valley area. Creepy clown sightings that began in South Carolina have now been reported several times in surrounding areas.

Beginning in August, a group of children near a housing complex in South Carolina reported clowns trying to lure them into the woods. Since then, hundreds of reports were filed across the eastern US of clowns peeking through windows, loitering under streetlights and peering out of bushes.

In virtually all cases, when police arrive at the scene, there are no clowns to be found.

The hysteria has led from everything to school lockdowns to the arrest of innocent clowns engaged in legitimate clowning.

Gary Jackson, head clown in charge at Clowns R Us in Highland, said that he is not concerned about his clowns being arrested since they have been in the area for a number of years and the local police know them.

However, he is slightly concerned about travelling to venues a little farther away.

“We’re almost considering putting a little sign on our car that says ‘Don’t shoot, we’re on our way to a party,’” Jackson said.

Jackson also said that Clowns R Us recently worked a festival at a local school and the principal called to verify that their clowning practices were legitimate. Jackson

said that he is sympathetic to the hysteria given clowns’ portrayals in many horror movies.

“Clowns, for a while, have been one of the top scariest things for kids,” he said.

In Saugerties, there have been at least three reports of suspicious clowns. On Thursday, Sept. 29 around 5 p.m. multiple subjects were spotted in clown gear at St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery in Barclay Heights.

Although there have been rumors of clowns appearing in and around New Paltz, University Police Chief David Dugatkin said that nothing has been reported to them.

He said that if a report were filed, they would respond as they would to any call for service and would immediately send an officer out to investigate.

“It could be someone just dressed up in a costume, it could be anything, so right off the bat we’re not going to consider it a serious threat just because they’re dressed as a clown, but we would certainly immediately investigate it,” Dugatkin said.

New Paltz Town Police Chief Joseph Snyder also said that his department has not handled an incident with clowns to date.

Fourth-year French and communications major Sophie Constantino and her housemates live off-campus and are taking extra precautions in lieu of the rumored clown sightings.

“It’s obviously scary especially with

Halloween coming up and the fact that people will be dressed up, even if it is just a prank, people could go too far,” she said.

“We never walk alone, especially at night, and we’ve been really diligent about locking our doors and windows whether we are home or not.”

Both Snyder and Dugatkin expressed that simply the act of wearing a clown costume is not illegal and it would depend on the circumstances of the incident what the individual would be charged with.

In this contentious race for the 19th Congressional district seat, Democratic candidate Zephyr Teachout has crticized her Republican opponent John Faso’s past as an Albany lobbyist.

According to disclosures.house.gov, a database of U.S. lobbying records, after serving in the New York State Assembly until 2002, Faso worked for the Albany lobbying, law and consultant firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips for clients such as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from 2002 to 2013.

Additional organizations he worked for as legislative counsel include Autism Speaks, the Brain Trauma Foundation, Association for Affordable Housing, National Baseball Hall of Fame, New York State Association for Affordable Housing and other trade groups and organizations.

“He did not work for the 400-member law firm when he ran for governor in 2006,” Faso Campaign Manager Dain Pascocello said. “Faso was never retained by any Wall Street banks, fracking companies or any energy production firms.”

In an interview with The New Paltz Oracle in September 2016, Faso said his lobbying career is public record and he did not back down in the face of criticism.

“Professor Teachout worked as a lobbyist, too,” Faso said in the interview. “This is the standard rhetoric, you’ll hear in this campaign that I’m a right wing, anti-woman extremist and that I kick little puppies and children. It’s unfortunate that this is the kind of approach they take. My job as a

candidate is to try to correct the record and have people know what I’ve accomplished and I’d be honored to serve if I was elected.”

Although Teachout was briefly registered as a lobbyist for the Sunlight Foundation— a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization committed to increasing transparency in government—she was not paid as a lobbyist, according to Alexis Grenell of the Teachout campaign.

“It’s very common for heads of advocacy organizations to be registered so they can speak to lawmakers about the issues they care about,” Grenell said.

Grenell furthered her statement by drawing upon the Executive Director of Common Cause/New York as registered heads of Planned Parenthood and NARAL. “But it would be wrong to label them [Executive Director of Common Cause] as ‘lobbyists,’” Grenell said.

During the second debate, Teachout said that if elected in Congress she will be a voice for those who have lost middle class jobs and are looking for jobs. Teachout proceeded by stating Faso made a choice to be a lobbyist for the “other guys” and the “big money interests,” contrasting herself as always having been a voice for the interest of those who have been “shut out” and have lost jobs.

In response, Faso said “there she goes again with an attack that has no basis.”

Faso maintained that his main client in the last five years has been Autism Speaks where he had a primary role in writing a law pass in 2011 that enhanced health insurance coverage for children with disabilities.

the truth and if you can’t trust a candidate to tell you the truth about these small things, how can you trust her to tell the truth about the large things?” Faso said at the debate.

In the first congressional debate on Sept. 15, Teachout referenced her claim that Faso worked on behalf of the fracking industry as a lobbyist. Faso denied this claim.

According to Pascocello, the natural gas pipeline company the law firm worked with was on real property taxation issues, and the company didn’t take a position on natural gas production matters. In contrast to Teachout’s statement at the debate, Pascocello described Faso’s work with the law firm as serving as a community liaison for Constitutional Pipeline Co. where he handled relations between the public and the company, he never lobbied lawmakers on behalf of the company.

“Professor Teachout and her cronies in Washington continue to distort the truth about John Faso’s background and professional record with their dishonest attacks and outright falsehoods,” Pascocello said.

“One can only assume they’d prefer to muddy the waters with lies and innuendo rather than articulate a real vision for the people of this district. It’s clear that Professor Teachout wants to distract voters from her own failure to pay her own taxes; her opposition to the tax cap and her support of an energy tax; and the fact that she only moved to the district this year with the hopes of buying a seat in Congress. It won’t work. Her radical agenda and NYC style campaign don’t reflect the values of our district.”

The final debate is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 24. on Time Warner Cable.

The New Paltz transfer station received a 10 year lease from the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency, allowing them to remain open on the townowned property at 3 Clearwater Road.

The station is one of two in Ulster County and between the two, they are responsible for 1,140 square miles, 181,791 people and 24 municipalities. After the New York State Legislation allowed for the creation of the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency, the towns were no longer individually responsible for their own solid waste and recyclable management, but it was up to the agency to apply a county-wide materials management program.

According to the New York State Solid Waste Management Plan, there are objectives followed such as reducing the amount of solid waste in New York State, reusing material that would generally not be reusable and generating energy from solid waste. It is also to the benefit of the agency to promote education and outreach

that encourage reducing, reusing, recycling and composting portions of the existing solid waste stream.

The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency states that due to the promotion of conserving wastes for better good, the current recycling rate is 41 percent. New Paltz has recently adopted a zero-waste action plan in order to remove reusable materials from the mainstream waste program that would not allow for the recreation of materials into other forms of energy.

The transfer station at New Paltz allows anyone including contractors, residents or businesses to bring their waste as long as it is larger than two cubic yards and has a tarp. By keeping this station open to the village of New Paltz and other surrounding towns, “trash, garbage, and recyclables of all sorts are kept out of the village streets, keeping it clean and environmentally sustainable” as said by Village Board Liaison, Tom Rocco.

He says the transfer station is “a happy and well run operation for that village” and also mentions that his grandchildren love to spend a day there when they come

up to visit. He encourages everyone to go and learn about how beneficial recycling is to local villages as well as the planet as a whole.

“The transfer station is a repository for trash all throughout the area,” Rocco said.

“Without it, trash would go elsewhere and in order to dispose of trash, you’d need to travel further, which would not be practical”.

Along with the transfer stations, the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency offers various other services. These services include recycling of materials at the agency’s Recycling Center, the recycling of electronic devices, household hazardous wastes and compost.

With the lease allowing the transfer station to remain open, the agency will be able to promote a steady community of recycling and encourage locals to participate in the building of a healthier and cleaner village through the practice of recycling and reusing materials instead of disposing of them entirely.

First Bee Species Classifed as Endangered

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has officially named seven yellow-faced bees native to Hawaii as endangered species.

The new rule designating protections for the species was published on Friday, Sept. 30 in the Federal Register. According to The Xerces Society, who advocated for their designation, these are the first bees in the country to be protected by the Endangered Species Act. The bees look like small wasps, distinguished by the plumose (branched) hairs on their bodies that are longest on the sides of the thorax. They are also known for their yellow-to-white facial markings.

According to a fact sheet provided by the University of Hawaii’s Master Gardener Program, these are the only bees native to Hawaii, meaning they reached Hawaii on their own. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife services reports that the populations continue to shrink. The genus Hylaeus anthrcinus were once found in dozens of locations around the islands, but now only 15 remain. Additionally, Hylaeus hilaris and Hylaeus kuakea are now only found in one location in Hawaii.

Contributing factors to the shrinking bee populations include habitat destruction due to urbanization and the introduction of non-native animals and predators, introduction of nonnative plant species, wildfires and natural events such as hur-

ricanes, tsunamis and droughts.

The bees’ protected status will allow authorities to implement recovery plans, access funding for the cause and limit the harm from outside sources. The rule will go into effect at the end of the month and will also grant endangered status to 39 plant species, the band-rumped storm-petrel, orangeblack Hawaiian damselfly and the achialine pool shrimp.

Despite their status, these bees remain persistent and 11 new native species have been discovered in the past 15 years.

The yellow-faced bees are not the only pollinators under threat. Forty percent of the world’s invertebrate pollinator species, which encompasses bees and butterflies, are facing extinction. About 75 percent of the world’s food supply depends at least partly on pollination.

Organic beekeeper and “Bee Doctor” for Honeybee Lives in New Paltz Chris Harp said that local honeybees are not on the endangered species list, but they are headed in that direction.

“The number of bees lost each year is growing considerably,” he said.

Harp attributed the honeybees’ decrease in population to factors like climate change, pesticides and fungicides. He said that people need to be more knowledgeable in terms of what they put on their lawns.

“A beautiful green lawn is a detriment to the environment in the long run,” he said.

People can learn more about what they can plant in their lawns to help nourish honeybees, but also need to be mindful of where they purchase these plants.

Harp said that although companies like Lowe’s, Walgreen’s and the Home Depot made statements that they will stop using neonicotinoids on their flowers to make them look more appealing, they still used on a huge percentage of flowers by other companies. Neonicotinoids are toxic to honeybees and the bees ingest them during their interaction with plants that they have been used on.

“They take that poison back to their hive and it feeds their larva, feeds their babies and then results in weakened bees and loss of colonies,” Harp said. “People

need to be far more knowledgeable about what they’re putting out there. Even when they’re trying to help the bees, they may not be helping the bees.”

Harp believes that giving honeybees endangered status would help protect them, but it would cause problems for farmers as they would have to change their use of pesticides.

“In doing so would cause a rift in the agricultural community…” he said. “They would have to completely switch over their protocol for farmers.”

Perspectives and Plans for Plains Road

In 13 months, the Catskill Aqueduct will shut down for ten weeks of repairs and service work. During the shutdown, the Village of New Paltz will need to look elsewhere to satisfy its water needs of roughly 600 gallons per minute. Local officials have planned on reaching that number by using several options, but the Plains Road aquifer seems to be the only source that has been at the center of frequent controversy.

“You can’t just start pumping thousands of gallons an hour out of aquifer in a way that would damage the environment,” said Marty Rosenbaum, an Albany attorney, who is currently leading two cases against the project.

One case challenges the entire project under the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), including the town and village of New Paltz, New York City, and the owner of the testing site on Plains Road. The court has not yet reached a preliminary decision on the case.

The other case, against the town of New Paltz, argues that the water district plan was not detailed enough and would not benefit at least half of the residents. Last month, a state court reached a preliminary decision on the case, and according to Rosenbaum, the case will continue to move forward, which could make things difficult for town officials such as Village Trustee Tom Rocco.

“The most we have to get is the courts to say no, that these suits are not valid reasons not to go forward,” said Rocco. “For that, you need a court decision.”

According to Rocco, the village’s other options for increasing its water output include reservoir expansion and drilling for wells in three other locations. The reservoir

expansion would improve its output to 200 to 250 gallons per minute (gpm), while the wells’ combined output would be between 100 and 200 gpm. Another option, a well on the Turk property near S. Ohioville Road and I-87, was considered but discarded when testing showed high salt levels.

Even with conservation efforts, which decrease consumption by five to ten percent, Plains Road’s 400 gpm is necessary to reach demand. Rocco called the water plan “a four-project set that we needed to get to 610 gallons per minute.”

Some residents of Plains Road feel that village officials haven’t considered all options. “I think that the better solution for a temporary problem is a temporary solution,” said Ingrid Beer, a resident represented by Rosenbaum. “A temporary solution, in my opinion, is going to be to pump water from the town of Lloyd into the village for those ten-week shutdowns.”

Google Maps places Lloyd and New Paltz less than five miles away from each other, just a short distance away on Route 299. According to Beer, the village’s response to the solution was that “they don’t have enough time to get the permit.”

Town Supervisor Neil Bettez, however, views the possibility of the Plains Road water district as a windfall. According to Bettez, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection made much of the project possible in the first place, contributing about $10 million – the town’s annual budget.

“They’re pitching in this time because it’s to the DEP’s benefit that we have a backup water supply in case of a catastrophic failure,” he said. “But there’s no guarantee. At some point, if we can’t get all of our ducks in a row, they’ll just walk away from this

project… Then we lose out, and the people who lose out are really the people on Plains Road who want and need this water.”

Despite the apparent advantages of the water district, Bettez acknowledged the op-

position to the project. “It hasn’t fallen apart yet, but it’s being slowed down by a few people who, I think, are thinking only of themselves, and not their neighbors or community.”

On Thursday, Sept. 22 Onteora Middle/ High School went into lockdown after receiving a bomb threat. A 14-year-old was charged with a class E felony of falsely reporting an incident in the second degree.

The minor was released to the parents and referred to Ulster County Family Court.

New Paltz Police Chief Joe Snyder and University Police Chief Dugatkin said that their departments have had no knowledge or involvement in the threats at Woodstock, but they do each have their own protocol for

responding to threats, which could not be released for security reasons.

Snyder said that there are different protocols for types of threat and location and that they have had to deal with some incidents in the past.

“In most cases, we handle them within our own agency with assistance of State Police, Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department and Rescue,” he said. “At times bomb dogs are brought in to check the area and if a device that is suspicious is found, the State Police Bomb Team will come to the scene.”

Dugatkin also said that he has not encountered a bomb threat on the SUNY New Paltz campus in the five years he has been with the University Police Department.

However, they do have a bomb threat awareness procedure that is available to all students, faculty and staff. The procedure instructs the recipient of a bomb threat made via telephone to ask certain questions in attempt to get more information out of the caller. It also discusses how to handle threats via email or handwritten note and what to do upon the discovery of a suspicious package.

Multiple Bomb Threats Received in Woodstock

Woodstock has experienced a flurry of bomb threats for the first time in nearly 20 years. In an eight day period, two bomb threats occurred in Woodstock. The first was on Thursday, Sept. 15 at Woodstock Golf Club on Mill Hill Road at 5:50 via telephone. The buildings and golf course were evacuated.

Finding Santa’s Stash

Walter Marquez loves antiques: from his job as owner and manager of the Antiques Barn at Water St. Market, to his 240-year-old home in Highland, to his Santa Claus collection of over 1,400 collectibles of all variations and sizes.

Ever since Marquez, a native of Middletown, New York, was a little kid, antiques have been the apple of his eye. When he would get home from school, he would always hang out with his grandmother who introduced him to antiques and family heirlooms.

“It’s just always been my thing,” he said. “I love all this old crap. There’s something about it, in the look and the feel and the quality. I just love it.”

But Marquez didn’t enter the business end of the antique world until 1999, where he worked at an antique shop in Clintondale, New York. Before that, he spent 10 years working as a kitchen designer.

“That was fun, too,” he said. “But I needed a change and an opportunity came along to do this with a friend, and that developed into this whole thing and it’s been good. I still enjoy it.”

Marquez works at the Antiques Barn eight to 10 hours a day, six days a week.

Outside of his job there, he is also an antiques dealer, looking through flea markets, yard sales and houses alike, continuing to search for antiques that he can buy and sell to other shops. He refers to this as “the hunt.”

“That next house might have that treasure in it that I’m trying to find,” he said.

“It’s just the thrill of [it]. It’s hard to describe, but it’s like foodies that find that next best restaurant. They hunt for that, too, where we just hunt for more stuff.”

At his shop in downtown New Paltz, Marquez currently has about 30 different dealers’ antiques scattered about, waiting to find new homes. But with a waiting list

of 20 to 30 vendors, available space is easily filled right back up again.

Marquez buys and sells a lot of antique furniture and household items, from dressers, tables, glassware and dishes. Aside from household goods, he also sells a lot of jewelry, Kodak cameras, maps, typewriters and telephones. Some of his oldest antiques come from the Victorian era and scale all the way up through the decades of the 20th century.

“I buy quantity, so I won’t just buy that one table. I’ll go in and buy 300 things,” he laughed. “And it works for me. If I can buy a quantity, I don’t have to go everywhere, but I still want to go look at the next house, too, because there might be more good stuff.”

Marquez, like many of his customers, enjoys antiques because of the nostalgia

they bring. As an antique fanatic, he also has several collections of his own: old toys and vintage mirrors that cover the walls of his house in lieu of artwork. But after 30 years, his hundreds of Santa Clauses remain his largest personal collection.

“They’re everything from 1920s and ‘30s to little German papier-machés,” he said. “In the ‘50s, they made the hard plastic ones. Those are my favorite, that’s my childhood.”

Marquez said that at Christmas time, his Santa Clauses fill up the rooms of his house, and the rest of the year he puts them away. He even brings in 100 or so to showcase in the Antique Barn.

“People come every year just to look at them because they know I bring them in,” he said. “It’s ridiculous, really, but people do love them. It’s a bit of an obsession,

but I don’t hunt for them constantly. It’s at the point now where I have so many I don’t need anymore. But if I see that one and it’s inexpensive, then why not? What’s one more?”

Marquez considers himself lucky to have landed where he did in New Paltz.

Given its convenient location right off the New York State Thruway, the town gives easy access to people traveling from Manhattan, Long Island, Westchester, Albany, New Jersey and even Connecticut.

“New Paltz is a great town, and it’s a busy town, so it’s a great place to do business,” he said. “Other towns aren’t seeing the craziness like we have and we benefit.

And it’s beautiful here. We have Historic Huguenot Street, the College, Mohonk, the Gunks, so there is a lot going on in this little area, so people love to come here.”

Conversation One For All

STL HOSTS GROUP TO DISCUSS TENSE TOPICS

Intolerance, prejudice and discrimination flourish in environments of silence, fear and misunderstanding. That’s the idea behind Conversation One, a new group open to all campus community members that meets weekly at SUNY New Paltz’s Sojourner Truth Library (STL) to discuss instances of intolerance or discrimination that campus community members face or learn about in popular media.

According to Mark Colvson, the dean of STL and the head organizer of Conversation One, the group provides a safe space for people to open up about tough topics that hit close to home, such as racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia or transphobia. As stated in the program’s mission statement, Conversation One aims to engage “all members of the community, including students, faculty and administration.” Colvson and the Conversation One team hope to build a community where each and every individual is truly valued, he said.

The idea came from Colvson’s reactions to recent incidents of police brutality and un-

derlying issues of systemic, structural oppression.

“All I can say is that some time shortly after the one two punch of the acquittal or nonindictment of police officers involved in the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York, I started to find it harder and harder to think clearly and go about my normal work,” the dean said. “I realized I needed to talk and express some of the anger and frustration and sadness I was holding down.”

Colvson reached out to Karanja Carroll, a former associate professor of Black Studies at the college, to help facilitate a group where anyone from the SUNY New Paltz community could come to discuss their frustrations and receive some group catharsis. With the help of former student Kevin Lam, who drafted the program’s mission statement, and dozens of students, faculty and staff members, Conversation One came into fruition. So far, the program’s weekly meetings have been small, consisting of about four to seven people, but Colvson believes it’s extremely valuable to have a place dedicated to maintaining an on-

going dialogue about structural oppression and its real-world implications.

“I believe that conversation like this can serve more than one purpose,” he said. “It helps individuals deal with the stress and anger that comes from feeling minimized or excluded. It can help people answer questions they have about the experiences of those different from themselves, and it provides a venue for deep learning outside the classroom.”

Among the program’s key tenants are transparency, meaning that everyone at the meetings speaks only from their own experiences; accountability, implying that people are held accountable for what they say in conversation; diversity, meaning that all identities and intersections of identity are valued equally; and agency and action, stating that the conversation aspect of Conversation One is employed to initiate learning, growth and real-world actions.

“Everyone is welcome, no matter how much or little personal experience you have of these topics,” Colvson wrote on his blog on STL’s webpage. “If you’re curious, hurting, interested, angry, come give it a try.”

NYU PROFESSOR LECTURES ON SPEECH PSYCHOLOGY

Many may not know this but infants have the ability to understand speech almost as soon as they’re born.

New York University (NYU) assistant professor of psychology Dr. Athena Vouloumanos kicked off the Cognitive Science Colloquium Series about developmental research with a speech titled “Speech: A Signal for Communication?” on Friday, Oct. 14 in the Lecture Center.

Her lecture encompassed the research and experiments she conducted on infants and their reaction to speech and sound in the very early stages of their lives.

Vouloumanos became interested in cognitive speech in babies after she graduated from McGill University, located in Montreal, Quebec, with a

bachelor of science degree in biology. She learned that it wasn’t biology that interested her.

“I loved reading biology, but I didn’t want to do biology,” Vouloumanos said. “It turned out that I didn’t care about molecules, but I cared about its behavior. I discovered after I graduated with a degree in biology that that was psychology.”

She was accepted to medical school and received a graduate fellowship, but deferred medical school because it gave her a weird feeling in her stomach.

A month before she was supposed to start medical school, Vouloumanos contacted Janet Werker, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, and asked if she was looking for any Ph.D. students for the fall semester. Werker accepted Vouloumanos and UBC became the school from where she received

her Ph.D. in neuroscience.

During the lecture, Vouloumanos explained some of the experiments she did using actors and infants. In one project she had actors make sounds, such as “xhm” which translates to clearing your throat — the sound indicated to pick up an object and Vouloumanos observed the reaction of the infant. She came to the conclusion that “young infants prefer listening to speech compared to non-speech sounds.”

Assistant psychology professor Dr. Sarah Shuwairi was a student of Vouloumanos when she was attending NYU for graduate school in 2008. She invited Vouloumanos to speak about her research on speech perception in infancy and the ability to communicate.

She thoroughly enjoyed the lecture and recently discussed a paper Vouloumanos wrote about speech being special in newborns. “[Vouloumanos] demonstrated that the presence of speech bias in the newborn has these longterm effects. So, infants who were stronger in the speech perception bias at the earliest stage, like in zero or one-day-olds, were better on other communication tasks later,” Shuwairi said.

Sam Han, a fourth-year psychology major, attended the event because it sounded interesting and wanted to receive subject pool credits for his major.

He liked how Vouloumanos presented the lecture with her knowledge and enthusiasm.

“I learned that babies are able to pick up on communication from a very young age,” Han said.

“Vouloumanos was very concise and it was a lecture worthwhile going to.”

Not Your Average Avocado Toast!

People love toast and lately it has become all the rage. Poor college students can spend up to $10 purchasing this trendy meal from hipster cafes, but what if you could make your own fancy concoction for half the price? I have a cheap avocado toast recipe that is deliciously simple and can be made right in your very own dorm room.

Here’s what you’ll need: One ripe avocado (gently squeeze to make sure it’s slightly soft) Hot sauce (my favorite is Cholula) Hummus (I personally enjoy Sabra) Salt and pepper Bread (any kind!)

Step One: Toast your bread until somewhat crispy. I usually use one slice of bread, however, if you’re really hungry and want more of a meal go for two.

Step Two: Mash up the avocado adding salt, pepper and hot sauce as you go. A trick that I learned to smoothly get the pit out of an avocado is to delicately tap the knife into the pit, twist and pull it out.

Fall Foliage Fun

LOCAL NEW PALTZ FARM HOSTS FALL HARVEST FEST

That’s why Phillie’s Bridge Farm Project (PBFP) hosted a Fall Foliage and Harvest Festival on Sunday, Oct. 16, located at 45 Phillie’s Bridge Farm Road in New Paltz.

Nearing the end of the fall harvest warranted a time for PBFP to celebrate and sell their farm-fresh produce, to cook up some colorful treats for themselves and the community and in turn allow people to gain more awareness of the farm and what it has to offer.

“What I’m excited about is getting more people to notice Phillie’s Bridge, where here, there is so much love put into the land,” said Oliver MacPotter, who has served as a farmer apprentice at PBFP since May. PBFP, which sits on 65 acres of land originally occupied by the Lenape Indians, works to “demonstrate and promote local agriculture that is ecologically sound, community oriented, and economically viable,” according to their website.

MacPotter said that everything for sale at PBFP’s festival was born on the farm from

scratch.

He explained that all of PBFP’s vegetables are grown in their greenhouse from a seed, nurtured and watered everyday.

Workers like MacPotter watch as the veggies grow, and when they grow to a certain height, they are brought out to the fields where the farmers prepare the vegetable beds.

“Sometimes [the vegetables] even complete a full cycle,” he said. “We use everything here. We eat the food that we grow and we compost what we can’t use, so sometimes it ends up right back in the soil.”

Farm Manager Heather Wodehouse said that there has already been some light frost, which has killed some of their frost-sensitive crops. She said PBFP currently has leftover peppers and green tomatoes that were previously harvested but that are now done in the field.

Continuing to be harvested on the farm are bunches of winter squash, roots, carrots, rutabagas, turnips, beets, kales, cabbages and chard, which were all up for grabs on Sunday, along with husk cherries, eggplants, kabocha squash, leeks and more.

PBFP members also cooked vegetarian chili, kabocha squash

soup, whole wheat pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cookies and kabocha pie cups for attendees.

Along with selling homegrown crops and homemade food for visitors to enjoy, PBFP’s festival hosted an authentic cider press, run by MacPotter, where he served fresh pressed cider all day. There was also face painting, yoga, live music from local musicians Ami Madeleine Daichman, Danny Berger, Lucinda Judson, Ed Kralles, John Owens and the Late Bloomin’ Blackberries and a oneand-a-half mile nature walk through the woods and wetlands of PBFP led by education director Jasmine Wood.

“The goal is to get people here to the farm, to know who we are, for us to have another aspect of involvement with the community and for people to appreciate Phillie’s Bridge the way the employees past and present have and to know to come back,” MacPotter said.

“We need more community supported agriculture (CSA). We have members who support [the farm] but we need more from New Paltz and surrounding towns to get involved with us, to know who we are, that we’re here and that we’re doing great things.”

PBFP sells fresh produce every Thursday at the SUNY New Paltz farmer’s market on the academic concourse.

Step Three: Get your hummus and spread a thin layer over the toast. I find the hummus makes it more substantial and provides added flavor and texture.

Step Four: Generously apply your mashed up avocado over the hummus. You can use half of the avocado and save the rest or the whole thing.

Hughes’ “Belfast Blues”

THEATRE ARTS DEPARTMENT INTRODUCES DRAMATIC ONE-WOMAN SHOW

The title “Belfast Blues” has two meanings. One refers to Geraldine Hughes’ “Belfast blue eyes,” described as such to her by filmmaker George Schaefer. The other refers to the euphemisticallynamed Troubles, a long and bloody conflict between unionist Protestants loyal to the United Kingdom and nationalist Irish Catholics who sought independence for Northern Ireland.

Hughes was born into this conflict, and her one-woman show “Belfast Blues” explores the manner in which Hughes and her family struggled to survive a city plagued by violence. The play opens with her birth, which occurred in an overstuffed, understaffed hospital. But even before the playwright herself is introduced into the story, we see Hughes’ pregnant mother sneaking an explosive device across the street, past a British soldier. Right out of the gate, Hughes imbues her tale with an impressive level of intensity given the barebones approach of a one-woman show.

The story truly begins to pick up steam after the death of Bobby Sands, the Provisional Irish Republican Army member-turned-political-prisoner who led a now-infamous hunger strike before finally dying of starvation in 1981. Sands’ martyrdom escalated the CatholicProtestant conflict, and much of “Belfast Blues” is situated firmly in the aftermath. At one point, Hughes describes moving from a one-bedroom apartment to a four-bedroom home, but the sense of elation at her new living quarters is almost immediately undercut by its proximity to a large wall separating Protestants

and Catholics, over which both sides lob their fair share of hazardous objects and weapons.

It’s a harrowing tale, one that even involves the gruesome death of children, but Hughes still manages to find humor in the colorful characters she surrounds herself with: her worrisome mother, her drunk father and a local shopkeeper and family friend. These characters aren’t entirely developed, but they don’t have to be. They’re simply there to provide a necessary levity from The Troubles.

In her early teenage years, Hughes was cast by the aforementioned George Schaefer for the television movie “Children in the Crossfire.” The film industry would later become her salvation — though at the time, Hughes did not believe herself to be an adequate candidate for the role of “film star” — as it would grant her the connections that allowed her to eventually leave Belfast in pursuit of an education at the University of California, Los Angeles, paid for by Schaefer himself.

Hughes’ memories feel very lived-in, even as she’s relaying them in a simple monologue, and even as she’s the one playing every character. There’s something childlike about the way she performs these characters, both physically and verbally, which gives the play a concrete sense of perspective. After all, it’s all from the point of view of a young Irish girl with some Belfast blues.

It’s raunchy. It’s tactless. It’s problematic and highly offensive. But here I am, an unabashed feminist, confessing my greatest sin in a written publication: “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is my favorite television show of all time. The dark comedy follows the misadventures of five Philly-born-andraised pals who own and operate a wildly unsuccessful bar.

Like most foul-mouthed, ill-humored comedians, the actors and writers in “Sunny” have to be taken for what they are: foul-mouthed, ill-humored comedians who make hilarious jokes in incredibly poor taste. The show will have you doubled over in hysterics — that is, if you can withhold your critical thinking lens to enjoy 22 minutes of nonsensical and raunchy humor.

Without further ado, here are my Top 10 “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” episodes.

10. “Mac Day” “Mac Day” gives Mac the upper hand on the rest of the gang. After all, it’s his day, and his word rules. While the rest of the gang follows his lead, Mac introduces his cousin, Country Mac, who is simultaneously an exact copy and the polar opposite of good ol’ City Mac. It’s a smart strategy employed by the writers to confirm some popular fan theories.

And, hey, who doesn’t love seeing Mac get bit in the butt by his own bluffs?

9. “Who Got Dee Pregnant?”

Much to the shock of the rest of the gang, Dee reveals that she’s pregnant … and someone from the

gang is the father. It happened on Halloween night at the bar, Dee says, and it’s up to the rest of the gang to piece together the blurry points of what actually happened through a “The Hangover”-esque fragmented recollection. Of course, there’s a delightfully funny twist at the end of the episode, but I won’t spoil it for you.

8. “The Gang Dines Out” What could have been a dull filler episode from the show’s eighth season ended up being one of the most GIF-ed and referenced episodes from the show’s entire run. “The Gang Dines Out” has an unusually simple premise: Dennis and Mac go to their favorite Italian eatery for their weekly BFF date, only to find that Dee, Frank and Charlie are spending the evening at the restaurant, too. The episode is a laughably dramatic play-by-play of the gang’s efforts to pretend they haven’t noticed each other. Spoiler alert: it’s painfully obvious to everyone involved that they’ve all noticed each other’s company.

7. “The D.E.N.N.I.S System” Arguably one of the show’s most cringe-worthy episodes, “The D.E.N.N.I.S System” reveals Dennis’ tried-and-true system for winning the hearts of the ladies of Philly. Dennis could definitely benefit from a feminist intervention; his system breaks all sorts of boundaries of consent, respect and, frankly, common sense. If not for a tentative laugh, this episode provides insight into rape culture and makes even better fodder for critique.

6. “The Gang Beats Boggs” “Boggs” is a particularly clever, relatively

A small. pleasantly-lit room in the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art welcomed passionate alumni brimming with stories to share of the late Hugo Munsterberg, Professor Emeritus of Art History at the SUNY New Paltz from 1958-1979.

On Oct. 15 at 3 p.m., Associate Professor of the Department of Art History Elizabeth Brotherton facilitated a discussion for SUNY New Paltz alumni proceeding the gallery talk, “All Excess Stripped Away: Donations to the Dorsky Museum by Hugo Munsterberg.”

The intimate event was held in the seminar room of the Dorsky, where approximately 20 alumni gathered for some well-described nostalgia.

Brotherton began the discussion by introducing a subject many art historians debate upon: What is a better way of viewing art: through a generalist or formalist lens?

A generalist will mainly focus on the aesthetic

or emotion the piece of artwork conveys, whereas a formalist will attempt to understand the piece by considering background such as the artists’ political views, the political climate of the time it was created, etc.

Munsterberg was described as more of generalist with an ardor for Asian, African and other examples of non-western art. He was a quirky professor who “used to stand in front of the classroom with his eyes closed for a bit in the beginning of class,” one alumni recalled.

The beloved professor was born in Berlin in 1916 to a German father and an American mother.

Munsterberg was raised with dual citizenship in America and Germany. In 1935, he left for America.

He earned both his B.A. and P.h.D. at Harvard University in 1938 and 1942, respectively. Munsterberg wrote his dissertation on early Chinese Buddhist bronzes.

When Munsterberg joined the SUNY New Paltz Art Division in 1958, he was the first art histo-

new episode of “Always Sunny.” A sloppily-drunk gang attempts to top baseball player Wade Boggs’ mile-high drinking record, much to the chagrin of a very frustrated flight crew. The episode hails from the show’s 10th season and is smartly structured to parallel the sport of baseball, America’s favorite and arguably most corrupt pastime. It’s a good laugh for anyone who follows baseball culture.

5. “Chardee MacDennis: The Game of Games” It’s a classic “Always Sunny” episode, and it’s very, very funny. The Gang introduces Frank to their made-up trivia-slash-drinking game, which they’ve dubbed Chardee MacDennis. Frank’s first round of the game goes hilariously wrong, and viewers get a glimpse into the verifiably messed-up lengths that the “Always Sunny” gang will go to to kill their boredom.

4. “The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby” Unpopular opinion time: “Dumpster Baby” is a hilarious and highly underrated “Always Sunny” episode. The plot is a simple but laughable one; Mac and Dee stumble upon a baby in a dumpster outside Paddy’s Pub and decide to raise the baby (whom they lovingly nickname D.B.) as their own in lieu of handing him over to Child Protective Services. Ever the clever duo, Mac and Dee even try to profit off of poor D.B. as a child model, taking it so far as to bring the baby to a tanning salon to break him into the non-white child model market. It’s a twisted one, that’s for sure.

3. “The Gang Gets Analyzed” Many television show fanatics harbor not-so-

Alumni present who took his courses described him as a very human professor, who would share with them “earthy” stories: Munsterberg also had a reputation as a flirt.

Dr. Sadie Penzato, class of ’66, said she was an older student when she had Munsterberg as a professor. Penzato recounted a moment where she walked into his office to find him speaking with two beautiful 18-year-old girls who were batting their eye lashes at him, and “he was loving it.”

“After they left the room I said to him, ‘Aren’t they beautiful?’’ Penzato said. “He responded, ‘My dear, who isn’t beautiful at 18!’”

Thomas Pike, class of ’60, laughed when he recalled Munsterberg’s immense passion when describing art, and his regular use of the word “voluptuous.”

secret fan theories about fictional characters personifying mental illnesses, emotions, sins, etc. The writers of “Always Sunny” play off of this, bringing the whole gang to Dee’s therapist to, as the title suggests, get analyzed. Dennis shines in this episode; although he attempts to do the majority of the analyzing alongside Dee’s therapist, he inadvertently sheds light on his creepy and highly manipulative tactics for keeping the rest of the gang under his control.

2. “A Very Sunny Christmas” Like a sparkling Christmas tree or a chocolate Easter bunny, “A Very Sunny Christmas” is a holiday delight. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t rewatch the episode at least four or five times during the winter holidays. The episode brings to light the troubling realities of Charlie and Mac’s childhood Christmas traditions, all the while confirming our lingering suspicion that Frank Reynolds is the most sadistic, twisted fictional father figure of all time.

1. “The Nightman Cometh” Charlie’s musical episode is another “Always Sunny” classic for a reason: the lyrics and concept are pure comedic genius, playing off of his childhood trauma that may or may not have happened.

With the whole gang wrapped up in the musical number as the starring actors, “The Nightman Cometh” is twisted and contorted by the gang in the most hilarious way possible. What Charlie hoped would be a light-hearted, charming musical ends up being a darkly funny and mildly uncomfortable experience. But, hey, we get a glimpse into that boy’s soul through his masterful composition (after we pay the troll toll, of course.)

Distinguished Emeritus and Department of Geography Professor Ronald G. Knapp was present at the discussion, and spoke of Munsterberg as his colleague. Knapp was 24 years younger than Munsterberg when they both worked at SUNY New Paltz.

Knapp shared that although Munsterberg had a great love of Asian art, he had never been to any part of Asia until he began working at the college. Knapp and Munsterberg both went on an art research trip to various parts of China with a group of other art historians.

“The man terrified me,” Knapp said. “As soon as he started talking to me he was friendly, but I would always stammer in my responses. Over time, I got to know him well, and we established a mutual respect.”

Knapp smiled while recalling Munsterberg’s dry, blunt nature when critiquing someone’s purchase of artwork.

“He would outright tell the person, ‘You don’t have taste!’” Knapp said. “We would get into heated debates. He was a dragon, and I was a dragon.”

REACT TO FILM SCREENS DOCUMENTARY “AFTER SPRING”

Often enough, we see films and forget about them. We enter dark theaters with friends or family and leave, briefly discussing what we shared before grabbing a bite to eat.

However, on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Lecture Center 102, this was not the case.

SUNY New Paltz’s chapter of REACT to FILM, a club dedicated to informing young people about social issues through film, debuted their first program of the year. The documentary, “After Spring,” about the Syrian refugee crisis, captivated the crowd followed by a riveting Q&A session led by students in the organization.

Prior to the screening, students signed in and informed the club of their interest in the power of documentary. The international organization, Oxfam, also held a

table outside with petition asking the government for medical supplies and food for Syrian refugees.

“So many people on campus are here right now and it shows how important these issues are to people. They want to be informed,” said Madeline Barrasso, a fourthyear student and President of the Oxfam New Paltz chapter.

The event commenced with an introduction from President of the New Paltz REACT to FILM chapter and third-year student Lauren Alberti. She welcomed everyone and said the non-profit organization has a slew of chapters throughout the country, all of them watching “After Spring,” that week.

in a place originally intended to be temporary. The documentary further focuses on aid workers battling to maintain the camp and those determined to bring normalcy to the children who make up more than half of Zataari’s population.

According to the film’s website, “With the Syrian conflict now in its sixth year, millions of people continue to be displaced.

‘After Spring’ is the story of what happens next.”

After the screening the conversation began. Alberti admitted a panel discussion usually ensues with professors, but the timing didn’t work out so students took the reigns. Questions ranged from: “Did your opinion of refugees change?” to, “Is the Western media perception of the crisis accurate?” Everyone dived into a respectful conversation that flourished despite conflicting opinions.

Students recounted their experiences studying abroad last spring in Greece, admitted their shock regarding how technologically connected the refugees are and attempted to shatter stereotypes surrounding refugees.

“It definitely opened my eyes,” fourthyear digital media management major and new REACT to FILM member Alexis Mascoli said.

According to Alberti, though the films themselves are important the point of the club includes actually doing something about the issues as well. Each film subsequently hosts a reaction event. The president said the event is currently undetermined, but they are hoping to find a way to spread awareness and raise money for the Syrian refugees. ANTHRO DEPARTMENT HOSTS MUSICAL DEMONSTRATION

As members of a generation where entertainment is limited to either a night of binge watching Netflix or re-watching videos of past VMA performances on YouTube, it’s a rare and special day when young people and community members gather to fully immerse themselves in the performance and music of a foreign culture.

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, SUNY New Paltz students and faculty sat eagerly in their seats for a riveting demonstration and performance, titled “Music and Theatre of Vietnam.” Courtesy of the Anthropology Department, the event was another edition of the 2016-2017 Anthropology Department Lecture Series, a series dedicated to providing students with a more worldly experience.

The presentation kicked off under the direction of Truong Hoang Chuong, who is well versed in the nuances of Tuong Theatre. Chuong demonstrated the whimsical distinctions between the presentation of good spirited characters

and characters he classified as “evil.”

Chuong’s charisma and lightheartedness not only conveyed the caricature nature of the art but brought laughs and smiles to everyone in attendance.

This art form includes the use of props and costume pieces, most specifically, wigs. The way a character brandishes these items is how the audience can decipher the character’s true intentions, according to Chuong.

Chuong’s performance was followed by a musical set from musician Mai Thi Tuyet Hoa, who demonstrated Hat Xam, a style of music in which was originally practiced primarily by blind musicians.

Hoa sang two songs; one was a classic folk tune, and the other was a ballad.

The latter of the two told the story of a woman who was encouraging her husband to continue studying for his civil service exam so he can prove himself to be worthy of her. Hoa’s rendition of the tune held a warm and magical quality, utilizing vastly different vocal techniques than one might find here in

the United States.

Hoa later went on to explain to the audience that she is one of the last people to know the ins and outs of this music genre, making the event that much more special, considering how many people are actually exposed to its charm is seemingly minimal.

Hoa’s performance was followed by the demonstration of how the Vietnamese utilize instruments to enhance the quality of jazz music. According to second-year computer engineering major Melvin Rodriguez, this portion was the highlight of the event.

“I enjoyed the incorporation of the modernization of Vietnamese jazz,” Rodriguez said.

The entire performance was translated and facilitated by assistant professor Lauren Meeker, who was “incredibly pleased with the number of people in attendance.” From the minute the performers filed into the room, it became abundantly clear that they were also pleased by the number of people who came to watch.

The energy in the air was palpable; audience members were intrigued by the foreign customs and rituals of Vietnamese performance and the performers were eager to entertain their audience. A balance of energies between audience and performer is quintessential regarding live theatre, and SUNY New Paltz was fortunate enough to witness masters of this trade.

First-year psychology major Rebecca Walsh said that she found the performance “mesmerizing.”

“The performers truly loved what they had been doing and the audience ate up every minute of it,” Walsh said.

Despite the watering down of the importance of Vietnamese folk performance, there is still a persistent minority who dedicate their lives to preserving the culture. If for only a short while, the event made the idea of “otherworldly experiences” feasible and enjoyable.

In the midst of flu season, the SUNY New Paltz community has been notified of one student being diagnosed with the mumps virus by the Student Health Center.

“Mumps is caused by a respiratory virus whose symptoms include painful swelling of the salivary glands near the ears and under the jaw, which can occur on one or both sides of the face. This swelling may be associated with other nonspecific symptoms,” according to Student Health Services.

We at The New Paltz Oracle encourage students to go to the doctor if they show symptoms of mumps, and to stay clear of social interaction. The Center for Disease Control, (CDC), and Prevention say that those who are infected with mumps do not get sick right away—it can take two to four weeks to show signs of infection.

Column Bob Dylan: Musician, Poet, Nobel Laureate

“I think Bob Dylan wrote the first rap song,” my mother once explained to me over the sound of Dylan’s rapid-fire indictments in “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding),” his need to breathe between lines seemingly inconsequential. We sang along to Dylan’s body of work all the way to his Jones Beach concert that day. I was 16 at the time.

My mother and I don’t have much in common as far as interests go. I never became a swimmer in my youth, nor did I grow into the diehard Knicks fan she was for some time. Very rarely did we watch the same television shows, and I never could get behind her hatred of “Good Will Hunting” or “Top Gun.” Music, however, was

where we most strongly bonded, and Bob Dylan rests at the zenith of that connection.

Few songwriters are as both broadly political and intimately human as Dylan, whose discography displays a rich tapestry of protest anthems, heartbreak songs and love letters. Dylan’s versatility can be attributed to his profound sense of empathy, through which he often writes about the woes of various characters. Consider the chilling “Ballad of a Thin Man,” a song about the remnants of a society unable to grasp the cultural shifts of the 1960s. Dylan creates the character of “Mr. Jones” as a personification of these concerns, a man who must reconcile with no longer belonging to the dominant culture.

Or “Like a Rolling Stone,” one of Dylan’s most famous songs, about a socialite who

loses everything and joins the underbelly of society she once ridiculed. Although the song offers little sympathy for its subject, it is Dylan’s empathy that allows him to condense his larger message—one about the fickle and ultimately inconsequential nature of class—into a nuanced parable.

Dylan’s frequent use of second-person perspective supplements this further.

On a more personal note, it was his 1974 album “Planet Waves” that became my shoulder to cry on as a teenager. In particular, the heart-wrenching hate song “Dirge”—in which Bob Dylan laments, “I hate myself for loving you”—connected with me in ways few songs had before. Romantic or otherwise, I think everyone can relate to the ills of a toxic relationship; the degree of rawness and intensity presented

by Dylan was unprecedented in that regard. To this day, “Dirge” is a song that Dylan refuses to perform live.

The biggest impact Dylan left on me, however, was with his crowning achievement, “Highway 61 Revisited,” a great American storybook that saw Dylan perfecting his use of the microcosm. That it houses both “Ballad of a Thin Man” and “Like a Rolling Stone” is indicative enough of its brilliance. In times when we

are faced with demagoguery and dangerous degrees of nationalism, it’s important to remember that America isn’t defined by its flag or its anthem or any other sort of symbol. America is defined by Americans. No one understands that better than Bob Dylan, who spends the entirety of “Highway 61 Revisited” singing about the “geeks,” the “bums” and the “jokers and the clowns”— the real America.

There are exactly two things surprising about Bob Dylan winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The first is that it didn’t happen sooner. The second is that his award is even remotely controversial. The man wrote civil rights anthems, anti-war anthems and charted the movement of American culture across the decades. To say that Bob Dylan is one of America’s finest musicians is to completely understate his importance. Bob Dylan is one of America’s sharpest historians. He’s one of America’s most eloquent poets. And for the vagabonds, the outcasts, the misunderstood, Bob Dylan is an American hero.

With a playoff berth on the line, the men’s soccer team will control their own destiny heading into their final two games of the regular season.

The Hawks, who sit in sixth place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings, will host two teams above them, SUNY Fredonia (fourth) and Buffalo State (third), in conference matches Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22, respectively.

With only the top six teams advancing to the SUNYAC Tournament, the Hawks will be guaranteed a spot in the postseason if they win both games.

“If we don’t win both, then it’s relying on other teams,” Hawks head coach Kyle Clancy said. “If we win both, we’re in. So we do control our fate in that aspect. That’s nice to be able to have control of your own destiny.”

For Hawks fourth-year forward Sam Spring said the team is just going to go out and play.

“We don’t really worry too much about where the other teams are in the standings, we

just work hard, focus on our game and try and get the three points every game,” he said.

To get to this point, the Hawks matched up against three conference teams during their last four games.

In the midst of a five-game road trip, the Hawks continued conference play. The Hawks drew a 2-2 tie against SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Oct. 7, despite holding a 2-0 lead late in the second half.

Hawks first-year midfielder and defender Coltan Goodwine opened the scoring in the 62nd minute, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, fourth-year forward Tucker Stern netted a cross from third-year midfielder Aleco Podias. The Bears would claw back with a goal in the 81st minute to bring the score within one.

In the 90th and final minute, Bears fourth-year forward Justin Kellett tallied the equalizer in a scramble in front of the net with one second remaining on the game clock, bringing the game to extra time and ultimately ending in a draw.

During the pair of overtime sessions, the Hawks put up five shots, but could not tally the game-winner.

The following day saw another conference draw for the Hawks, this time a final score of

1-1, as they traveled to SUNY Plattsburgh to take on the Cardinals. Hawks first-year forward Luke Dole headed home a cross from secondyear midfielder Manny Flory in the 83rd minute to go ahead 1-0. For Dole, it was his third goal of the season. For the second straight day, the Hawks’ opponent would score the tying goal in the final minutes of the match. During the 89th minute, the Cardinals got on the board, tying the game.

The Hawks returned home to earn a 1-0 conference victory over No. 7 SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Oct. 15 on South Turf Field. The win was the first for the Hawks against Oneonta since Sept. 18, 2010. Additionally, it was the first defeat over a nationally-ranked opponent since knocking off No. 19 SUNY Plattsburgh 1-0 on Oct. 7, 2011.

Hawks first-year defender James Hennessy registered his first career goal, the lone score of the game, in the 27th minute.

After a string of five straight conference battles, the Hawks drew a scoreless tie with Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, Oct. 18 in a nonconference road matchup.

“I think that any team in this conference is good, and any game is going to be a tough game,” Clancy said. “It doesn’t matter if we’re playing Oneonta or if we’re playing Oswego, every team is going to give a good battle. It’s really about being confident when you go out and giving everything that you have.”

New Paltz Races for Literacy in Uganda

From start to finish, participants donated not only their sweat and energy, but their contributions toward creating a literate world in Uganda.

More than 100 people attended New Paltz’s first annual “Let’s Get Literate” 5K run on Sunday, Oct. 16. The event, dedicated to alleviating the global issue of illiteracy, raised $3,000, nearly doubling the funding goal of $1,597.

The race took place at the corner of Plains Road and Pencil Hill Road, where Derek Lake crossed the finish line in 15 minutes and 10 seconds for first place overall out of 86 runners. Other notable finishers were Pete Schweddy, who finished first in the 19 years and under category, and James Sullivan for the 30 to 39 age group.

The event was formed by the Literate Earth Project (LEP), a nonprofit group that creates libraries in Uganda by empowering and employing local communities, offering support to sustain continued growth, and partnering with local entities and educators. To date, The Literate Earth Project has opened 10 school libraries in Uganda, with four more slated to open this year.

“It started when I went to Uganda,” LEP Chief Financial Officer Joe Gentsch said. “I remember seeing a lot of kids run-

ning around and being excited over books and I noticed how far the dollar could go.

Only $1,600 could fill a school with a new library and all these books and it just sparked me to organize this event.”

The group was founded in 2011 by Jeff Fonda, who graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 2010. Fonda studied International Relations and Black Studies. In addition to his work with The Literate Earth Project, Jeff is currently a Master of Business Administration (MBA) candidate at Temple’s Fox School of Business.

He is also an assistant coach for Swarthmore College Women’s Soccer Varsity team.

Fonda was recently named to Literacy Today’s 2016 “30-under-30” list.

This showcases creative and methodical approaches to promoting literacy to those that need it most.

According to the list, the LEP team took a trip to Uganda in 2009, and noticed students using only hand-copied versions of textbooks and having almost no outlet to read for enjoyment. The few books owned by the school were locked away, but when Fonda got his hands on a couple world atlases and showed them to his students, he saw how excited the children were to read about and see new cities, trees, and people.

pen to get the credit for as our founder,” Fonda said. “However, it shows the support we have internationally. We have a backlog of over fifty schools in Uganda ready to partner with our organization.

Every $1,600 we raise for a new library is access to books for roughly 600 students who have never touched one let alone had the opportunity to read one.”

As a former New Paltzian, Fonda also spoke about the idea of bringing the event to New Paltz in the first place, expressing his gratitude towards the support from the community.

“I called New Paltz home for some of my most formative years,” Fonda said.

“It’s where I was when the idea for The Literate Earth Earth Project came to fruition, so it feels great to be supported by the community in this way.”

Gentsch reported that the group is highly considering bringing the event back next year and hopefully can add live music, food and a potential 10K race to it—all in hopes to enforce social, economic and political change through literacy and education.

“It definitely brought a strong sense of community,” Gentsch said. “A lot of people wanted to help out and each person seemed open and excited about the idea.

The word we spread about the organization and the involvement was great, we hope to see people come out next year.”

H OW DID YOU FIRST START PLAYING VOLLEYBALL? I started playing volleyball when I was very young. My sister who is eight years older than me played and both my parents coached her, so I went to every practice and watched. I ended up playing when I was in 7th grade and in 8th grade made Junior Varsity (JV). During my four years in high school I played on varsity and started.

OUTSIDE OF VOLLEYBALL, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO? Outside of volleyball I enjoy hiking, being outdoors and being with friends—a very typical college answer.

The women’s soccer team continues to find silver linings in the struggles of a losing season.

Despite holding a 1-13-2 record, the Hawks are looking to finish the season strong, taking every positive and playing until the final whistle.

“For the fact that we’re not able to win, their spirits are still up,” Hawks head coach Colleen Bruley said. “And we’re still working hard, and they’re still learning every day. It’s been fun to still go to practice, even though we’re struggling.”

The Hawks continued their schedule of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchups until the conclusion of the season with a 3-2 loss against SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Oct. 7 at home on South Turf Field.

The Bears opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Soon after, Hawks third-year forward Gabriela Cabello knotted the game up at 1-1 in the 24th minute. During the second half, Hawks third-year defender Monica Rouse headed home a corner kick from first-year midfielder Jessica Fox to give the

Hawks a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute. Even though the Hawks took a lead, they could not hold on. The Bears would tally the equalizer in the 60th minute and net the goahead goal in the 78th minute.

Prior to the match against SUNY Plattsburgh the following day, the Hawks honored their five fourth-years in a “Senior Day Ceremony.” Those Hawks are fourth-year captain Sloane Lipshie, forward Sophie Constantino, and midfielders Kaite Mulry, Skye Kaler and Hannah Moran.

Kaler would record the only Hawks goal on the day less than a minute into the match. The Cardinals would counter with five unanswered goals, taking the match and home finale 5-1.

Hawks first-year goalkeeper Angela Ratka made 11 saves in the contest—her fourth double digit save match of the season.

On Saturday, Oct. 15 the Hawks would take a scoreless road match into halftime with SUNY Oneonta. However, the Red Dragons would score the lone goal in the 57th minute and come away with a 1-0 shutout win.

“Even though we lost, it was still a positive for us,” Bruley said. “We have to try to

pick out every little positive that we can in a season like this, and we were able to do that and we’ll build on it.”

Lipshie said that compared to the team’s previous games, they did a better job of getting numbers behind the ball defensively and again playing to the final minute against Oneonta. “[Oneonta] was not our best game and we held a tie for most of the game against a top team,” Lipshie said. “There was tremendous effort until the whistle blew. They scored using a quick restart off an indirect kick and we were on our heels. Unfortunately people only see the final score and not the effort of the individuals that make up the team.”

The Hawks will face SUNY Fredonia on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. and No. 22 Buffalo State on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. to close out their 2016 season.

“We got Fredonia on Friday [Oct. 21] and they’re in the same boat as us,” Bruley said. “Everything that we do from here on out is with our goal in mind of winning and beating Fredonia. That’s what the whole season has come down to now. That’s what we’re going to work hard for as well.”

My biggest role models are my sister, Kate, and mom, Michele. They are both super hard working women, and they have taught me so many things. Being confident, brave, hard working, organized and outgoing are qualities I get from both of them.

ARE YOU A FAN OF ANY PROFESSIONAL TEAMS? I have a hard time following sports because whenever I root for a team they lose. I think it was the Green Bay Packers who had won the Super Bowl and were on an ongoing winning streak the season after. When I decided to be a Cheesehead and root for them, they lost their first game in a while. After that, I gave up and decided to watch any football, baseball, basketball game that was on television and just enjoy who I was with when I watched them. That is more exciting to me than a team winning.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SUPERSTITIONS? I used to always have a routine when I was going to play a game, but one time I broke that routine and played amazing. After that I never did it again. It involved having my hair a certain way, my warmup and who I did handshakes with in a certain order. I was crazy superstitious.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPORTS MEMORY?

My favorite sports memory was winning SUNYACs my freshman year. I remember the season and how confident we all were, and as a freshman, I was so excited all the time to be in the gym and play. I started as a freshman, so playing with seniors was scary, but it was a season I won’t forget. The last point, my senior Alex Bizub served the ball and got an ace. The feeling of just wanting to hug all my teammates at once and cry and smile was the best feeling ever.

Women’s Volleyball Sets Sights on Playoffs

The women’s volleyball team took two of three conference matches from Friday, Oct. 7 to Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Hawk Center.

The Hawks beat SUNY Geneseo 3-1 (25-22, 2520, 25-27, 25-17) and SUNY Plattsburgh 3-1 (27-29, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18). Unfortunately, New Paltz lost to The College at Brockport 3-0 (25-27, 21-25, 18-25).

Both teams were undefeated in conference play before the match.

“It was an important weekend,” Hawks head coach Matt Giufre said. “We won two more conference matches, so that was good. I don’t think we performed as well as we’re capable of, and we’re addressing that now. But, I thought that we played three very good teams and to come out with two wins is not an easy thing to do.”

Following their conference matches, the Hawks won two nonconference matches against Nazareth College 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-23) and SUNY Polytechnic Institute 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-16) on Saturday, Oct. 15.

It was announced that the Hawks (14-9 overall) are ranked 10th in the New York Region in the first NCAA Div. III Women’s Volleyball regional rankings, released on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

The Hawks currently sit second in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings with a record of 5-1 in conference play. They have three more SUNYAC matches on their schedule

that they will play this upcoming weekend against Buffalo State, SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Cortland.

The team trails Brockport, as the Golden Eagles hold a 6-0 record in SUNYAC play. The only scenario where the Hawks could host the semifinal and final rounds of the SUNYAC Tournament is if they win all three of their matches this weekend and Brockport loses two of their three matches to SUNY Oswego, SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Potsdam. Brockport is the reigning SUNYAC Champion and currently holds an overall record of 24-2.

The quarterfinal round of the tournament will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 1, while the semifinal and final rounds of the tournament will be held on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5, respectively.

“We want to be in a position in the tournament where we can win the thing and we’re slowly putting ourselves there,” Giufre said.

It’s likely that if the Hawks make it to the final round of the tournament, which they have for the past three seasons, that they will face Brockport once more.

Giufre explained some things that the team needs to work on in order to get a chance to beat Brockport for the first time since the 2014 SUNYAC Tournament semifinal round.

“Our serving has to be tougher and our offense has to get better,” he said. “We have to get a little bit stronger and not make so many errors offensively. Our defensive positioning has not exactly been where it always needs to be. We’ve addressed that now and will be better at it moving forward.”

Tennis Drops SUNYAC Final

The women’s tennis team concluded their fall season by losing to SUNY Geneseo in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Finals by a score of 5-1 on Oct. 10.

This was the sixth straight season that the Hawks lost to the Knights in the SUNYAC Finals.

Fourth-year co-captain Olivia Ammirati recorded the Hawks’ lone victory at singles flight one 6-1, 6-4. Ammirati and thirdyear Brittany Grandville were named to the All-Tournament at first and second singles, respectively. Grandville was winning her singles match before Geneseo clinched the victory.

Ammirati, Grandville, third-year Emi Lewis and third-year co-captain Carol Tyson were all named First Team Doubles, while Tyson also earned Second Team Singles.

The Hawks lost all three of their doubles matches, but played them very close.

Grandville and Tyson lost at flight one 8-5, while second-year Lindsay Haley and firstyear Victoria Zezula last at flight three, 8-6.

“Our three doubles had the chance,” Hawks head coach Rob Bruley said. “Unfortunately they lost a really tight match.

That would have probably been the difference. I feel that if we picked up just one point in doubles, the momentum taken into singles would have made a difference.”

shutout SUNY Oswego in the quarterfinals 5-0 and then beat SUNY Plattsburgh 5-1 in the semifinals.

“They left everything on the court, certainly on the final day,” Bruley said. “The professional way that they went about their business all season, I couldn’t be more proud of a bunch of student-athletes representing New Paltz. They peaked at just the right time, but unfortunately we came up just a little bit short.”

New Paltz finished their fall season with a 6-3 record. The Hawks will not see action again until the spring season. Bruley noted that the team will resume indoor practices following winter break, giving his players time to “put their racquets away for a bit and become regular students.”

“We still have a lot of tennis to play,” Bruley said.

During the spring season the team will travel to Orlando, Florida where they will face many tough opponents from around the country, according to coach Bruley.

Despite the frustration that comes from losing to the same team in the SUNYAC Finals for six-straight years, Bruley remains confident that the Hawks’ time will come at some point.

“Obviously we would’ve loved to have been crowned SUNYAC Champions and represented the college at the NCAA Tournament,” Bruley said. “Hopefully we’ll get there one of these years. It has been many tough finals against Geneseo, but we’ll crack it one day.”

The puck has dropped and the 2016-17 New York Islanders season has begun.

After many have questioned the Islanders’ front office for their opening roster decisions, the youth movement has started whether the fans like it or not.

With new additions and young guys making their professional debut, it is going to take a while for this team to click.

In the season opener against rival New York Rangers, the Isles did not come alive until the third period. Trailing 2-0 on the road at Madison Square Garden, Nick Leddy and Cal Clutterbuck scored to tie game at two. Soon after, the Isles fell flat again giving up three straight Rangers goals. Isles Brock Nelson was able to muster up a goal, but the Isles ultimately fell 5-3.

To be fair, any team has its rust at the start of the season.

Some may call the 1-3 start disappointing, but with all of the new additions,

The Fountain of Youth chemistry just might take some time. It took almost seven years for the old Isles core to mesh, through all of the low times and seasons and become a legitimate playoff contender.

It was a shock when the Isles placed forward P.A. Parenteau on waivers on Oct. 10 right before the Opening Night rosters were announced and the New Jersey Devils claimed him the following day. It is too early to say whether or not this surprise move will come back to bite the Isles. The team was hoping that Parenteau would complement captain John Tavares on the right wing.

Signing a guy to a one-year contract is not much of a risk. But after youngster forwards Matthew Barzal and Anthony Beauvillier performed well in training camp, the roster spots were rightfully claimed.

The coaching staff decided to give both 19-year-olds a shot with the big club straight out of the OHL. Beauvillier has played in three of the four games so far this sea-

son, tallied an assist in the season opener, and scored his first career NHL goal in the team’s most recent game against the San Jose Sharks. Barzal has only cracked the lineup once in four games this season.

This idea and new strategy the management has put in play can only work if they give the kids a chance and give them the ice time they need. They are inexperienced in an entirely different and faster league, and will need to make mistakes in order to grow. This is the only way they are going to blossom into skilled professionals at this level. Both kids have potential to be great and talented assets to this team. General manager Garth Snow has placed the success of this team in the hands of the younger players. The installation of this “youth movement” can spark fire into the rest of the team, proving that only moves to improve the team will occur.

Maybe this will be the year that prospects will finally stick and make a consistent impact, compared to the last couple of years of

mediocrity from that end.

Tavares, who only has two points in four games needs to step up and show why he is the leader of this team. He is the one guy on this team that should always be a lock to contribute, regardless of who else is playing alongside him. Rightfully so, he needs to adjust to playing with new line mate and 2016 addition Andrew Ladd. Even individual line chemistry takes time to develop.

For the newly-formed fourth line of Casey Cizikas, Clutterbuck and Nikolay Kulemin this could be said one in the same.

Cizikas is currently playing injured, after blocking a shot, and this line’s physicality of the past will take a while to ramp up again from Clutterbuck and Cizikas who have played together last year to make an argument for best fourth line in the league.

The Isles faithful will just have to see how all this change plays out. There is always a plan, and it is definitely very early in the season.
