FALL SPORTS PREVIEW Football • Girls & Boys Soccer • Volleyball • Cross Country

High school sports for community The Miner has long had a sports preview section but this year we turned it into its own publication. We have profiles and team previews on each of the fall sports teams in the four school districts in our coverage area – Newport, Priest River, Cusick and Selkirk. In addition to athlete pictures, we interviewed the coaches to get their thoughts on the season. The teams and coaches run the gamut from experienced to first year. Some will contend for championships and some will struggle to get a single win. Either way, the teams have their dedicated fans who turn out for every home game and cheer the results no matter how they come out. We also included a Sports at a Glance section in which we offer a basic outline of some of the rules and characteristics of each sport. We hope you enjoy this edition of the Fall Sports Preview and follow your favorite team in the sports pages of The Miner each week. GRIZZLY FOOTBALL Top returnees: Seniors Fred Houck, Jesse Reyes, Johnny Quandt, Conrad Madison, Andy Russell and Kai Thomas; juniors Koa Pancho, Owen Leslie, Robby Owen and Kai Bowman; sophomores Danny Bradbury and Tug Smith. Reyes is the bread and butter runner for the Grizzlies, carrying the ball a lot. He was selected for All League second team on both offense and defense last year, as was Fred Houk. Reyes plays running back and linebacker for Newport. Houck is a one of Newport’s bigger players, at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 215 pounds. “When we run it, it’s usually behind him,” Newport coach Zac Farnam says. Top prospects: Farnam says Jacob Tanner, who was injured the first week of practice last year and missed the whole season, will be a good prospect. “He’s a tough kid,” Farnam says. Key losses: The Grizzlies will miss the play of Otis Smith, Kaben Hastings, Ty McDaniel and Kyler Zorica,

who all graduated last year. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast A League: Farnam predicts the team will finish with a 5-2 record in the Northeast A League, which is made up of Newport, Colville, Chewelah, Deer Park, Freeman, Lakeside and Riverside. Strengths: Farnam counts experienced juniors and excellent overall team speed among the Grizzlies’ strengths. Quarterback Koa Pancho is playing his first year as quarterback. He broke his collarbone in one of the first games last season and sat out most of the season. “He’s learning the position, but he has athletic ability and can run,” Farnam says of the 5 feet 11 inch 200 pound junior. “He’s super fast and explosive.” Pancho is strong as well as fast, Farnam says. He can bench press 260-265 pounds, he said. Newport has a kicking specialist for the first time in years, Kai Thomas. “I

usually want them to play another position,” says Farnam. But for Thomas, who has attended specialty kicking camps, Farnam makes an exception and just lets him kick. “He’s a good kicker,” Farnam says. Weaknesses: Farnam says the team lacks depth at several positions. League changes that affect the team: Farnam says the Northeast A League will now have a built-in week10 crossover game with the Caribou Trail League from central Washington. Additional observations: Newport has enough players to run two complete practices this year. That means younger players aren’t prac-

Key losses: Faith Rosen, whose family moved, and Taylor Ann Connell who graduated in 2015. Top prospects: Coach Jeremy Lewis said goalkeeper and junior Tiara Hamberg has “has shown a lot of potential” and midfield/defender Emily Bronkhorst, a sophomore, “is going to show us good things on the field.” He also noted senior Aryonna Willoughby’s skills. Overall projection of the team’s chance in the Northwest 1A League: In 2015 the Lady Grizzlies ranked fifth overall with a 9-9 record. In 2016, Lewis has his sights on making it to the play-offs. “I see us in the top six in the middle of the pack,” Lewis said. He added that the

teams to watch out for are Deer Park, Lakeside and Freeman. Other schools in the eight-team league include Colville, Medical Lake, Chewelah and Riverside. Strengths: “Our forward and center midfield are strong,” said Lewis. He also praised his team’s spirit, energy and effort. Weaknesses: The girls’ soccer team needs work on its defense, said Lewis, and strategy. “How to work the field together is something we need to develop more,” said Lewis. Additional observations: “It’s an intricate game,” said Lewis of soccer. “You’re always moving, the ball is always changing directions.” He added that he appreciates people coming out to the girls’ games, and See Page 7

GRIZZLY CROSS COUNTRY Top returnees: Junior Christian Loutzenhiser and sophomore Shade Maghan are the only two out of a team of ten that have competed in cross country before, said coach Mike Frederick. “We’re really young and the majority of our team hasn’t ran cross country before,” said Frederick. “Christian and Shade bring their experience.” Top prospects: Cusick High School junior Gracie StrangeOwl joins the Grizzlies this year for cross country. StrangeOwl is a track and field star at Cusick, competing at the state tournament during the 2015-2016 season. “It’s a new experience for her, but I think she has the potential to be a good runner,” said Frederick. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1A League: Frederick said it was too early to guess as to which teams would be strongest. Newport Cross Country placed eighth overall in the league for 2015. Strengths: Frederick, who returns to coaching cross country after a threeyear break, said that his team “gets along well together” and has formed a solid sense of camaraderie. Weaknesses: The team’s inexperience, said Frederick. With only two team members that have competed in cross country before, the Grizzlies are undergoing endurance training in

practice. “We’ve had some struggles trying to get in shape get ourselves on course,” Frederick said. “Everything is a learning experience.” Additional observations: The format for cross country will change, with teams competing in a regional meet at Chewelah Golf Course, Oct. 27, as opposed to the traditional districts meet. “The best teams will advance to state competition after Regionals,” Frederick explained. “So we’re (the team) more concerned about the end results than the immediate results.” The Grizzlies head to the Lakeside Invitational Saturday, Sept. 17. At Lakeside High School.

Head coach: Mike Frederick Age: “Always 39,” joked Frederick. Coaching experience: Frederick coached cross country at Newport High School for 24 years before taking a three year break to coach basketball.

he hopes more people will become soccer fans. “Come out and watch us,” he said.

GRIZZLY VOLLEYBALL From Page 6 a well-rounded team with strong defensive and attack skills. Weakness: The team’s primary weakness is having a brand new coaching staff. Additional comments: “Our goal is always to be better than we were before, to have a positive and successful season. To create an atmosphere in the gym that everyone wants to be apart of,” Smith said. The Grizzlies play in the Northeast A League, which is made up of Chewelah, Colville, Deer Park, Freeman, Lakeside, Medical Lake, Newport and Riverside. The Lady Griz ended last season one game away from going to state. They lost to Freeman in the Northeast A League tournament in November. They beat Chewelah in the first

round of the tournament, but lost to Lakeside, sending them to the qualifier bracket. They beat Deer Park in five, but lost to Freeman, ending their season.

High school fall sports at a glance Here is a quick look at some of the rules and characteristics of football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.

Football: High school football is played between two 11-man teams or, with smaller schools, between two eight-man teams. Cusick and

Selkirk both play eight-man football. * In Washington both 11- and eight-man football are played on a field 100 yards long and 160 feet wide. * The game is divided into four See Page 16

SPARTAN FOOTBALL Top returnees: seniors Anthony Storro, Tommy Anselmo, Sammy Hernandez, Collin Detrick, Tallin Haynes, Noah Jamison, Josh Coombs and Dylan Patterson; juniors Derrick Melton, Joe Huggler, Caleb Blancher, Riley Dement, Dausen O’Brien, Aaron Reyes, and Kody Salesky; sophomores Robbie Anselmo and Brandon McCracken. Top prospects: There are a couple players who didn’t play last year that are on this year’s team, including receiver and defensive back Kody Kuprienko and fullback and defensive end Tallin Hanes. Kuprienko, a junior, didn’t play last year but had played previously. Hanes, a 5 foot 11 inch 205 pound senior injured his knee early last season and missed most of the season. He’s expected to contribute this year. Key losses: The Spartans only lost one player to graduation last year. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Intermountain League: “We have the players not only to finish well but win league for the first time,” says Priest River head coach Shane

Douglas. “Ultimately it will come down to execution in our league games. We want to win all games but our goal this year is to improve and refine in the non league contests so we can bring our best game plan to league this year.” The Spartans play in the Intermountain League with three other schools – Bonners Ferry, Kellogg and Timberlake. Assistant coach Paul Anselmo says he expects the team to finish at the top of the standings. “That’s the plan anyway,” he says. “Timberlake and Bonners Ferry are tough, but we’re really a pretty balanced league.” Strengths: Douglas says he has some good players returning from last year, which is a definite strength. “Last year we only had one senior, so our younger guys and juniors received a lot of playing time. That extra game time is valuable, no form of practice can replace being in the live contests. We are hoping that experience will make a great difference for us this year.”

Quarterback Anthony Storro, a senior, is back at the quarterback position. He suffered a broken collarbone late in the season last year but seems to have recovered fully. In addition to passing, Storro has been one of the team’s most productive runners. He gained 99 yards on the ground in the team’s opener against Newport. Tommy Anselmo is an exciting player with big play ability on both offense and defense. Against Newport in the opener, he intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown.

The Spartans also attended a football camp at Eastern Washington University last summer, the first time in years the school has attended a camp. Weaknesses: “I would say depth,” Douglas says. “Although our turnout this year was stronger, we still are left with a lack of depth.” That limits players’ ability to practice against varsity level players. Those competitive battles make the players more game ready, Douglas said. “I believe we did offset that this year with having a strong offseason weight lifting

Most team members spent time in the district’s Zero Hour weight training program. The program, which started in January, takes place at 6:45 a.m. before school starts, hence the zero hour name. Players had to get themselves to the weight training, not that easy for players without cars. The program continued over the summer, with two day a week sessions. Additional observations: The Spartans finished last year with a 0-4 Intermountain League record. They were 1-6 overall.

SPARTAN VOLLEYBALL Top returnees: Coach Angie Goins said there are four players from last year returning strong in 2016. Junior Olivia Witter, a setter, started last year as a sophomore. She made Intermountain League All Team last season and pretty much runs the squad, Goins said. Emily Clark, a middle hitter, is also a sophomore. Last year was her first on varsity and she did OK, but she’s been playing club volleyball and is having a very solid year. “She’s our big middle hitter,” Goins said. Catherine Gamma, a senior, is Priest River’s Libero. This is her third year on the varsity team. Heidi Janhsen is Priest River’s left-side hitter. The senior is in her third year on varsity. Top Prospects: Three freshmen are playing varsity ball this year. Harlee Meek is an off-side hitter and backup setter; Natalie Randolph is a middlehitter and Maggee Pankoke is the defensive specialist. Goins has high hopes for all three. Key loss: Makia Brennan graduated last year. Overall projection of the team’s chance in the Intermountain League: Goins fully expects Priest River to finish in second place this year. Timberlake is a power house and will be difficult for anyone to beat. New to the league this year is Coeur d’Alene Charter. Goins doesn’t know much about them, but found out Tuesday, Sept. 13, when they played their first league game of the season against Coeur d’Alene. The remaining teams are Bonners Ferry

and Kellogg, who Goins doesn’t see as being much of a problem for the Spartans. Strengths: The Lady Spartans are hustlers, Goins said. They can catch hits other teams wouldn’t be able to get to, especially with Clark’s hitting abilities this year. The team is also full of strong servers.

Weaknesses: With much of the team being either seniors or freshmen, it’s an awkward mix of experience. Passing and defense are also a couple of improving points. Changes to the League: With the addition of Coeur d’Alene Charter into the Intermountain, the league won’t have to compete in a play-in game for state. Five teams in the league means two guarantee berths to state, one of which Goins is expecting to get. Additional observations: “We have an awesome group of girls this year,” Goins said. “They all do well in school. All are good natured.” She expects success because the girls are all good role models and involved in the community.

SPARTAN BOYS SOCCER Top returnees: Coach Rob Lawler said there are four players from last year making for a solid base in the 2016 season. He pointed out seniors Corbin Maltba, Clay Pelton, Cody Pelton and Gabe MacAlevy as integrating well with incoming players. “We have a strong nucleus of returning players, about 12 guys, that are a good base for us,” said Lawler. Key loss: Seniors Tyler Jones, Joseph Irvine, Michael Taylor, and Alex Amour graduated last year. Overall projection of the team’s chance in the Intermountain League: In 2015, the Spartans came in third in the league with a 5-3 record. This year, Lawler said the team is currently displaying average potential to be a top contender in the league. Though he said there are no definite standouts yet to determine the top teams in the league, he pointed to Bonners Ferry and Timberlake as teams to “watch out for” with St. Maries and Priest River right behind them. The most challenging League team for the Spartans thus far has been St. Maries, who Priest River lost to Sept. 7, 5-0. “They got inside our heads,” Lawler said. “They are a tough team.”

Also strong opponents for the Spartans were Stillwater Christian, who beat Priest River 3-0 Saturday, Aug. 27. However, that was a non-league game. Strengths: Lawler stated that with five games under the team’s belt so far for the season, his players are learning how to play under pressure better. “We’re maintaining possession of the ball and improving our passes,” said Lawler. He also said that the team is improving its ability to position the ball around the opponents’ goal. Weaknesses: The challenge every year, said Lawler, is integrating experienced players with those who are just beginning in the game. “There’s a level of complexity that comes with reforming a team of past and new players,” Lawler said. Additional observations: “Soccer is a very complex sport that isn’t easy to play and takes time to understand,” Lawler said. “But it is so enjoyable, and it has been a thrill to watch it become more popular in the United States over the years. I hope our soccer program will continue to expand and improve.”

SPARTAN GIRLS SOCCER Top returnees: Seniors AveryLynn Summers, Melissa Krampert, Madison Hemphill, Jesi Huntley, and Rachel Akre, and juniors Hannah Brengle and Lilly Hernandez. Key losses: Seniors Alyssa Carey and Tabitha Wilson graduated in 2015. Former sophomores Faythe Low, Brittany Millward, Hailey Hatfield, Destiny Amour and Kendell Scott didn’t return to soccer this year. Juniors: Hannah Brengle, Lillith Hernandez, Kayley Petek, and manager Brittaney Millward. Sophomores: Liann Kren and Beverly Landeros. Top prospects: Keona Brown, Chelsea Brown, Karah Fink, and Lillian Nolan as strong freshmen with a lot of skill coming in. Overall projection of team’s chance in the Intermountain League: The Spartans lost to Timberlake last fall in a 6-0 victory in the semifinals of the 3A District 1-2 girls soccer tournament at Post Falls High School. Timberlake appears to be one of the stronger teams in the Intermountain

League, which is made up of Timberlake, Coeur d’Alene Charter, Priest River, Kellogg, St. Maries, Orofino and Bonners Ferry. “Firstly, I know these girls will do great in the league and show immense progress from last year,” stated Fraser. “Secondly, I think these girls have a great chance of going to State if they keep working.”

Strengths: “This team has been working with each other for a while and their teamwork in communication and passing is their strength,” said Fraser. Additional comments: “This is one of the best groups of girls which I have worked with,” said Fraser.

BOYS SOCCER From Page 13 Head coach: Rob Lawler Age: 45 Coaching experience: This is Lawler’s fourth year coaching boys’ soccer at Priest River Lamanna High School. Prior to that he coached two years of girls’ soccer at Vallivue High School in Caldwell, Idaho, and was an assistant soccer coach for one year at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. He has also coached baseball and basketball and reffed for numerous games. Occupation: Lawler was a high school

math teacher for 10 years before working at the U.S. Forest Service in Newport as a hydrologist. Athletic experience: Lawler has played soccer almost his entire life, starting in first grade and playing all the way through college. There was a period of time in junior high when he played baseball, but he chose to stick with soccer in high school because both sports started in the spring in Washington State. “I’ve just always loved it,” Lawler said of the sport. “I was never forced to do it. In fact, there were probably times when my parents wished I didn’t play soccer.” Assistant coach: Mike MacAlevy 2016 Fall Sports Preview

SPARTAN CROSS COUNTRY Top returnees: Sophomores Caleb Gleason, Cameron Parkes, Slava Negrieieva, and Jordan Phillips and junior Spencer Sedgwick. Coach Lance Clark said there are no seniors on the roster this year, but a mix of underclassmen that form the foundation of Priest River Lamanna High School cross country. There are nine boys and about half a dozen girls on this year’s roster, an exciting change after no female students participated in the sport last year. Clark credited Kimberly Colombini, who joins the team as an assistant coach, for recruiting girls to participate in cross country. Key losses: Seniors Michael Taylor and Kenny Chestnut graduated last spring and sophomore Connor Durham decided to play football this year. “The football team got a real asset,” Clark said. “He (Durham) is a fast runner.” Top prospects: Clark alluded to his top returnees, adding that the boys’ youth and experience in the sport are a valuable combination. “I’m also excited to see what our girls will do,” Clark said. “Anything is possible there.” Overall projection of team’s chances in the Intermountain League: Priest River placed third overall in 2015. Clark said he expects the Spartans placing to be even better this year. “All the returning boys are good, and the girls are eager to get into it,” Clark observed. “I think they’ll be able to give the other teams a run for their money.”

Strengths: The majority of the cross country team are freshmen and sophomores, meaning if the Spartans do well this season and the majority of the runners return, the team will continue to improve. Weaknesses: Recruiting new members to keep the team fresh and relevant is a challenge, said Clark. “How do you inspire an affinity for health in your community and how do you tie that in with cross country?” Clark said. “That’s the question we’re trying to answer.” Additional observations: Cross country isn’t just about running, according to Clark. “It’s a racing sport,” said Clark. “We don’t run just to run; it’s about endurance and being able to persevere when you want to quit.”

12-minute quarters, with players taking a 15-minute halftime break. * The game and the half start with a kickoff. * The offense must move the ball 10 yards in four plays or give up possession. The plays are called downs. * Defensive players bring the play to an end by tackling a runner or pass catcher, or forcing them out of bounds. * Points can be scored in a number of ways. A touchdown, worth six points, is scored when a player runs, catches a pass or recovers a fumble in the opposing team’s end zone. * A field goal, worth three points, is when a player kicks a ball held by another player through the goalposts at the end of the field. * A safety is a two point play in which an offensive player is tackled in his team’s end zone. * A point after touchdown (PAT) is

No

either a one-point or two-point play attempted after a touchdown. If the ball is kicked, it scores one point, if passed or run in, it’s worth two points. Soccer: The game is played between two teams. No more than 11 players, including a goalkeeper and no fewer than seven players. * No player except the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with his or her hands. * Points are scored when a player kicks or heads the ball into the opposing team’s net. * The high school game consists of two 40-minute periods with a 10-minute overtime (usually only for district or state tournaments in high school). * Offside is a law in soccer that basically says that offensive players can’t move downfield ahead of the ball. It’s more complicated than that, but that is the essence.

Newport goes up against Medical Lake during Newport High School girls’ soccer first game of the 2016 season. In soccer, no player except the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with his or her hands.

* A yellow card is used to warn players, while a red card results in the player’s ejection from game. Red cards are given for things like excessive contact or unsportsmanlike conduct. Yellow cards are used to punish milder forms of misconduct. However, if a player receives two yellow cards in one game, he or she gets an automatic red card. *The field of play needs to be a rectangle 100 to 120 yards long and 55 to 80 yards wide, somewhat wider than a football field. * Each team may substitute an unlimited number of players between periods, when a goal is scored or when a player is injured. Substitutions are also permitted on goal kicks. * A penalty shoot is way of determining the winner of a match that

is a tie after the regulation as well as extra playing time. In a penalty shoot-out, each team takes turns attempting five shots from the penalty mark that are only defended by the opposing team’s goalkeeper, with the team scoring the most goals being declared the winner. If neither team scores in the penalty kick, or both teams score the same number, the game ends in a tie. Volleyball: The game is played between two teams of six players on court divided by a net. The court is a 60 feet long by 30 feet wide. * Teams play a series of games, with the first team to score 25 by a two-point margin winning that game. The first team to win three of See Page 17

five games wins the match. The fifth game is to 15. Teams play until there is a winner. * The game starts with a serve, with a player hitting the ball from the back of court at the other team over the net. The receiving team returns it and the game is on, with a point scored when the ball touches the floor, goes out of bounds or into the net. The server may serve from anywhere behind the back line. * Unlike many sports, if the ball touches any part of the line, it is considered in. * Scoring has changed a little over the years. It used to be points were only scored by the serving team. Now a point is scored on every play. * The ball can be played off of any part of the body and count as a legal touch. So it could be played off of a face, hip or even a foot. * Neither team can touch the ball more than three times on each side of the net. * No player may touch the ball twice in a row, except on a block. The block touch doesn’t count as a touch for the player or one of the team’s three touches. * There are “front row” and “back row” players. Back row players may

not attack (hit, tip, block) the ball over the net while in front of the 10-foot line, a line 10 feet behind the net. They can attack from behind the line. * Front row players can play the ball from anywhere. * Players must rotate, moving in a clockwise roatation, playing from a new position each time the ball changes sides. Players are in their rotated “position” until the server makes contact, at that point players may move anywhere on the court. * The “libero” position is a defensive specialist. This player may go in/out any time before the whistle for any back row player. The libero may serve, but for only one position, a back row player. The libero cannot use their hands (setting) in front of the 10-foot line. To get the ball to a hitter, they may pass with their arms. They can “set” the ball to a hitter if they are behind the line. * Subbing: players are in certain “positions.” When subbing in or out – they can only go back to the same “position” at any time. Several players can sub into the same position, but once they do, they may not sub into another position on the court. An exception to this rule is for the libero, they can play any back row spot.

Cross Country: Cross Country is a competitive team sport offered in the fall for students in grades seven through 12th. Training and optional group runs starts in the early summer. *Teams consist of five or more runners who all race together at the same time with other teams. *The top five finishers from each team are scored and their finishing places are added up for the team score. The lowest score wins. *High school races are 3.1 miles long. Courses are usually run across grassy fields, wooded paths, and have a mixture of hills. Some courses include creek crossings and log jumps. *All athletes get to participate. There are no cuts, and no benching. *A cross country meet is scored by each team adding up the places of its top five finishers. As in golf, the low score wins.

Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1B North League: Cusick plays in the Northeast 1B North division of the Northeast 1B League. Cusick, Selkirk, Columbia, Inchelium, Northport and Republic make up the division. Cusick coach

Troy Hendershott said he expects the team to finish at the top of the division if the Panthers stay healthy. He said Republic and Selkirk, two division rivals, graduated quite a few of their seniors last year. Hendershott doesn’t expect them to be as strong as they were last year. “But I never underestimate anybody,” he said. He expects Inchelium to be a tough team this season. The other division is the Northeast 1B South, made up of Almira/CouleeHartline, Entiat, Odessa-Harrington, Pateros, Wellpinit and Yakama Tribal. In week 10 of the season, the No. 1 team from the North division will play the South’s No. 1 team for the one and two seeds to state. PANTHER VOLLEYBALL Top returnees: Senior Alana Keogh and junior Taylor Allen, both hitters, are top returnees for the Panthers. “They both have a pretty good vertical, they both have some powerful hits, and know how to read their opponents,” coach Eric Finley said. Keogh and Allen can anticipate where their opponents will hit the ball, and map out a course so their team can execute a play. Top prospect: Maki Ranck transferred from Newport to Cusick this year. Finley has high hopes for her. Key losses: Cusick graduated eight seniors last year: Kaleigh Driver, Brianna Balcom, Reigan Allen, Val Keogh, Alyssa Walrath, Cassidy Hansen, Renee Wynne and Tiffany Yarber. “We’re kind of in the middle stages of rebuilding, but we do have a solid foundation for a team,” coach Finley said. Overall project of the team’s chances in the Northeast 1B North League: “We’ll be at the top three of the league,” coach Finley said. The league consists of Cusick, Selkirk, Curlew, Inchelium, Northport and Republic. Coach Finley said it will be very competitive because many of the schools are in rebuilding years. “It’s going to be tough to lock down those top three spots,” he said, but he has confidence his team will be at least in the third seed at the end of the regular season.

Strengths: The Lady Panthers have the ability to provide coverage for each other, and have strong communication skills. “The way we’re able to move around the court and read each other’s movements and plays,” is a huge strength for Cusick. Weaknesses: The variety of ages on the team could be a challenge, as there are freshman and seniors on the team. Finley says he calls it a “rainbow team.”

Head coach: Eric Finley Age: 28 Coaching experience: This is Finley’s first year coaching, but he refereed for the state of Washington for the last six years. He reffed the volleyball state tournament last season. It will be interesting to watch a former referee switch to the coaching side of volleyball. Finley moved up through the ranks of referees quickly, he said, and out ranks referees that may be officiating the Panthers this season, which was the case during one of Cusick’s early games. He knows the rules of the game inside and out. He refereed out of the Colville Valley Association, which includes every team in Cusick’s league, and has watched other teams in the league play up close for years. He said See Page 20

So four teams from the league will go to state, but with the addition of Yakama Tribal School to the league, there will likely be five teams that qualify and may well be six. That is being decided after this went to press. Strengths: Hendershott says many of the younger players got quite a bit of experience last season and that should serve Cusick well. He says he has a good line, anchored by Caleb Zeismer, a first team all league selection. Juniors CJ Balcom and Roddy Pierre will join him on the line. Receivers Dylan Hendershott and Jed Cupp are expected to do well. Tanner Shanholtzer will play quarterback. “He threw a little last year,” Hendershott said. Weaknesses: The team doesn’t have a whole lot of depth, Hendershott said, so staying healthy will be one key to success. Cusick hasn’t had enough players for a junior high program the last two years and the impact is starting to show, says Hendershott. Additional observations: The Panthers made it to state last year, where

they were knocked out in the first round by Touchet. They ended the season with a 7-4 record.

Head Coach: Troy Hendershott Age: 45 Coaching experience: Hendershott has been an assistant coach the last eight years, running the defense for the Panthers. He also spent a year as an assistant junior high football coach. He will continue to coach defense and will leave offensive play calling to assistant coach Tye Shanholtzer.

he can tailor his team’s practices to each team they will face in a given week, and he knows what calls he can challenge in a game and win. “Our team also understands what a double is, what a referee is looking for. We have fewer errors with the game point. I can teach the girls what they can and cannot do. We have that higher leg.”

Occupation: Finley works for the Kalispel Tribe of Indians in the elder services program, a job he’s had for the past seven years. Athletic experience: Finley didn’t play sports in school, but he’s been involved in the volleyball and basketball program at Cusick for the past 10 years. He graduated a 12year senior from Cusick High School in 2006. Assistant coaches: Shelby Vickery

Occupation: Works at Ponderay Newsprint Co. Athletic experience: Hendershott has been involved with the Cusick football program since he was a little kid. He was a ball boy as a grade school student, then went on to play four years of high school football for the Panthers. He played on one of the last 11-man Panther teams. The Panthers play eight-man football now. Assistant coaches: Tye Shanholtzer, Tell Hamilton and Brian Becks

2016 Fall Sports Preview

First year coach Jeremy Link said senior quarterback Jacob Couch and running back Brayden Taylor are probably the two most experienced players on the team. Couch, a 6 foot 3 inch 170-pound senior moved to the quarterback position from playing receiver last year. “He’s picking it up pretty fast,” Link says. Jared Taft will anchor the offensive line at center, with fellow senior Wyatt Stoddard playing guard. Another senior, Ben Avey got some JV experience last year, but will start at wide receiver this year. Top prospects: Tristan Chantry, a 5 feet 9 inch 155 pound senior is playing football for the first time since eighth grade. Selkirk hasn’t had a junior high program for a couple years. Chantry starts at halfback for the Rangers. Link says he has a good freshman class that turned out, including Steven Issikides, a 6 foot 165 pound wide receiver. He is starting for the Rangers. Another starting freshman is Ty Taylor,

a 5 feet 8 inch 160 pound cornerback. Zech Curren is a 5 feet 4 inch 140 pound cornerback and wide receiver. “He’s quick,” said Link. Jay Link is freshman starting safety and backup quarterback. Key losses: The Rangers graduated 10 seniors from last year, including Stephen Avey, Justin Chantry, Cole Dawson, Noah Bailey, Brady Filler, Logan Miller, Chris Descloux, Damon Volquardsen, Chance Chantry and Joey Dickinson Overall projection of team’s chances in the league: The Rangers play in the Northeast 1B North division of the Northeast 1B league. The North division is made up of Cusick, Selkirk, Columbia, Inchelium, Northport and Republic. Republic won the division last year but they also graduated quite a few players. Link didn’t make a prediction of where the Rangers will finish, with so many young players, it’s hard to say, but Link is optimistic. The other division is the Northeast 1B South, made up of Almira/CouleeHartline, Entiat, Odessa-Harrington, Pateros, Wellpinit and Yakama Tribal. In week 10 of the season, the No. 1 See Page 23

the state playoffs last year but were knocked out in the first round by perennial powerhouse Almira/Coulee-Hartline. Selkirk finished the year with an 8-3 overall record and a 3-2 Northeast 1B North League record.
