Occupation: Pancho is a fourth grade teacher at Stratton Elementary. chances in the Northeast A League: Coach Frederick said it’s his patent answer: Lakeside will lead the league and then it’s a toss up. “We’re hoping to be in the top half. We have some things we need to accomplish (to get there).” His bench is deeper than it’s been in the past several years. Strengths: “Last year, we looked at being a younger team. We have some experience now,” coach Frederick said. He hasn’t had to bring any freshmen up to play varsity. “We have a good nucleus who have played together.” Weaknesses: While the Lady Griz have more experience than last year, Frederick said they still have moments of youth where they lose focus. Rebounding is also an issue, though they had strong boards in their last
two games. Additional comments: Frederick is excited for the season.

GRIZZLY WRESTLING Top returnees: As far the Newport High School wrestling team’s upper classmen go, coach Adrian Bojorquez says seniors Colton Malsbury and Mikey Arnold bring their previous experience to bear for the Grizzlies. “Both boys work very hard in practice, and as long as they remain good students, I anticipate both of them having a good season for themselves and our team,” says Bojorquez. As for the juniors, this year there are seven on the team. Breadon Corkrum and Tessa Pillers are the wrestlers that have the most experience in this grade, according to Bojorquez, but he adds, “All these kids are great leaders and contribute to the team well.” The classes making up the majority of the team are the sophomores, of which there are eight. Though the group is young and inexperienced, Bojorquez praised their work ethic. “They work their butts off in practice,” Bojorquez says. “I hope that you all can see how hard they work by how they wrestle, when you come and watch our duals.” Though he did not cite any top prospects, Bojorquez says that last year’s seniors, Alex Solis and Jensen Kirkwood, are the team’s key losses. Key losses: “We lost two senior state participants last year (Solis and Kirkwood) and state experience is a big deal, especially on a young team,” Bojorquez says. “It would be nice to have that experience back.”
Mikey Arnold Senior 132lbs.
Colton Malsbury Senior 138lbs.
Jesse Young Senior 145lbs.
Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1A League: The coach says it depends on well the students evolve as a team as well as individual wrestlers. “How well we do in league will depend on how well we practice, grow as a team and how well we are able to manage school with the season,” says Bojorquez. “If we can do all those things well, we will have the opportunity to have a great season.” He adds that the Grizzlies’ strength lies in how hard they work at practice and the family atmosphere the kids are developing with each other. As far as weaknesses go, Bojorquez says, “We are a young team, especially when it comes to experience.” Head coach: Adrian Bojorquez Age: 37 Coaching experience: Eight years as an assistant/volunteer wrestling coach at Riverside High School Teaching experience: Para-Professional at Pend Oreille River School

FORWARD THINKING. RESPECTING THE PAST. Ask most people to tell you about the lumber industry, and you’ll get a fairly predictable list of description. What you’re not likely to hear are terms like: technologically advanced, sustainable logging, small log harvesting, green lumber products, commitment to healthy communities or ecologically minded forest management. But when people talk about Vaagen Brothers, those are exactly the kind of things you’ll hear. Specializing in the production of lumber from smaller diameter logs, Vaagen Brothers has been working in the forests of northeast Washington for more than 50 years. We’ve learned to take the best of traditional logging and lumber milling practices and combine them with advanced production technologies and forward thinking, sustainable forest management practices to create a company that’s as vibrant and growing as the healthy forests and ecosystems necessary to its success. tions to return to the state tournament and grab a trophy, Stewart said. Strengths: Avery Summers, Melissa Krampert and Rachel Akre will provide the brunt of the Spartans’ scoring, according to coach Gary Stewart. On defense, Summers, Krampert and Akre are the anchors of the defense also. “We play a mixture of man, match-up, and zone defense with pressing to keep opponents off balance.” Weaknesses: “We will be trying to improve our scoring from the perimeter,” Stewart said. He would also like to see more possessions from pressing. Additional comments: The mustsee game of the season will be against Timberlake, the defending state See Page 11

coach Kevin Wylie says. The team got off to a 3-0 start before losing a nonleague game with Newport. Last year the Spartans finished regular season play with a 1-4 Intermountain League record and were 7-10 overall.
Strengths: Wylie says he has an experienced group, with six returning players from last year’s roster. He says the Spartans are a very fast, skilled team.

Weaknesses: Depth is probably Priest River’s biggest weakness. “We have 10 full time varsity players,” Wylie says. “We are short handed at the guard position right now.” Additional comments: “I am very excited with our team so far,” the coach says. “We have a lot of hard working kids, along with great veteran experience that makes our practice very intense.”
Head coach: Kevin Wylie Age: 32
Coaching experience: Wylie has eight years coaching experience, Kevin including five years at Wylie junior high, two years at Head Coach boys JV basketball, and a year of varsity basketball coaching. He is entering his second year.

Trevor Rusho Senior 170lbs.
Nick Reyes Senior 145lbs.
Nathan Nelson Junior 113lbs.
Noah Jamison Senior 160lbs.
Riley Dement Junior 138lbs.
Top prospects: He noted that Jamison and Downs were particularly good prospects, as both went to the state tournament last year, with Jamison coming fourth and Downs coming in fifth place. Both are team captains. Hellinger also praised the efforts of Dement, who wrestled over the summer with USA Wrestling, proving himself in the freestyle and Greco wrestling categories. Freshman Tanner Cochrane, in the 138-pound division, is also shaping up to be a formidable wrestler, Hellinger says. “They have shown they are really dedicated in their commitment to master this sport,” Hellinger says. “They don’t complain and they do the work.” Key losses: He lamented the loss of last year’s team captain Gregory Fitzmorris, who graduated in June.
Larry Naccarato Junior 152lbs.
Brandon Downs Sophomore 113lbs.
Arron Reyes Sophomore 195lbs
Strengths: This year, Hellinger says the Spartans’ strengths lies in their middleweight division, which is chock full of athletes who have already shown their mettle in the Blizzard Tournament at Sandpoint and the George Wild Tournament in Kellogg. “That’s a group that is just really solid,” says Hellinger. “They are tough as nails.”

The Priest River Lamanna High School wrestling team is already proving their dominance in the 3A Intermountain League with the Spartans winning three of the tournaments they have attended so far this season. Top returnees: PRLHS coach Jesse Hellinger pointed to senior Noah Jamison (162), senior Trevor Rusho (170), junior Sammy Hernandez (285), junior Riley DeMent (139), junior Larry Naccarato (148) and sophomore Bran-
Weaknesses: If the team is showing any weakness thus far, it’s in the lightweight and heavyweight divisions, where the Spartans just don’t have the wrestlers. “We’ve had to forfeit two lightweight categories thus far because we don’t have anyone to fill them, and it’s hard to get the big guys to come out for wrestling too,” Hellinger says. Overall projection of the team’s chances in Intermountain League: Considering the Spartans took second place in districts and 10th at state last year, Hellinger feels the team’s chances in the IML for 2016-2017 are some of the best. “We definitely looking to improve on what we did last year, and last year was a good one,” Hellinger says. “I am so proud of the hard work these guys have put in; our practices are all about endurance. Top prospects: Cusick coach Rob Seymour sees Colton Hansen, Dylan Hendershott and Cameron Cotter as his top prospects.
Additional comments: Tanner Shanholtzer is a good addition to the team. “With our small numbers, our freshmen will have to learn very quickly to the varsity style of pace,” Seymour said.
Key losses: The Panthers will miss the play of graduates Spirit White, Joe Cutshall and Tyson Shanholtzer. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1B North League: Seymour says his team will be battling for one of the top spots in the conference. The team started the season with two losses to Chewelah, a Northeast A League school, before beating Curlew in a Northeast 1B North contest. PANTHER GIRLS BASKETBALL Top returnees: This is head coach Sonny Finley’s first year coaching Cusick’s varsity girls basketball team, so he’s not sure who were top players last year. Returning from the 2015-16 season are juniors Racheal Wynne and Gracie Strangeowl; and sophomores Nicole Stensgar and Emma Hardie. Top prospects: Allyson Nomee is a freshman, and earned a starting position, coach Finley said. Senior Talieya Tonasket, sophomore Amy Reijonen, senior Tempest Pierre, sophomore Jessica Hankey and senior Justine Pierre are also expected to contribute. Key losses: Renee Wynne, Kaleigh Driver, Brianna Balcom and Cassidy Hansen all graduated. Jocelin Nenema is playing for Newport this year. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1A North League: “We’re going to compete. We’re going to give effort no matter who we’re playing,” coach Finley said. As this is his first season, he’s learning who the top teams in the league are. Strengths: “It’s so early to tell. We’re
changing week by week,” Finley said. Weaknesses: The Panthers’ lack of height and depth are weaknesses. Additional comments/observations: “I just want to get these girls to compete. We’re improving every day and compete every game we play.” Finley said when they lose it’s his fault; when they win it’s the girls’ fault.

Key losses: Selkirk lost seven seniors from last year’s team: Cole Dawson, Logan Miller, Chris Desclouz, Stephen Avey, Jaden Krabbenhoft and Noah Bailey. “They provided a lot of depth,” coach Kelly Cain said. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1B North League: “We should be very competitive in league,” Cain says. The Rangers finished with a 17-7 record last season. They were 11-4 in the Northeast 1B Conference, finishing second in the conference behind Republic. Strengths: Cain says the players are a hardworking group with a lot of upside.
Weaknesses: Lack of experience is the team’s main weakness. Losing seven seniors leaves a hole to fill.
Head coach: Kelly Cain Age: 53 Coaching experience: Cain has 33 years of high school coaching experience, including seven years as head football coach and 28 years as head basketball coach. Teaching experience: Cain has worked 29 years as a teacher. Athletic experience: He played football, basketball and baseball for Mount Vernon High School. Assistant coach: Jeff Miller
GIRLS BASKETBALL Top returnees: There are no returning seniors this year. Returning sophomores include Jenna Couch, a 5 foot 6 inch point guard, and Whitney Dawson, a 5 foot 10 inch combo guard/post. Top prospects: The Rangers bring back four starters from last year’s Regional team, and four of the best players in the 1B this season, according to head coach Jack Couch. “The first earning All League Honors at Point Guard, Jenna Couch; the second, shooting guard Emma Avey; the third, combo guard/post Whitney Dawson and the fourth, post Gabi Rick. Key losses: “We graduated three,” Coach Couch said. First an honorable mention All State combo guard/post Hannah Rick, point guard Hannah
Jensen, and post Mackenzie McAnerin. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1B North League: “We will compete with Republic for this years league title,” coach Couch said. Strengths: Team continuity and fundamental development. “We return four starters, an experienced post and six young athletes, of whom five of the six have committed to rigorous summer basketball schedule the last three years. This has allowed our staff to develop our youth over time, preparing them for this season,” coach Couch said. Weaknesses: “While our core group is experienced, our team rounds out with much youth. Time will care for See Page 15 2016 Fall Sports Preview
