Pend Oreille County Fishing Prospects Bead Lake

at several points. Two-pole fishing is allowed Shoreline access: Good Shoreline access is limited to area around boat launches.

Eight miles north of Newport, in Kaniksu National Forest and year round open fishing season, Bead Lake is not stocked by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, but contains self-reproducing populations of kokanee, lake trout, burbot, plus numerous northern pikeminnows. Fishing at this lake should provide a unique experience. A U.S. Forest Service boat launch and parking area at the south end of the lake can accommodate six boats and trailers, but may not be available by April due to snow conditions. Check with the USFS Newport Ranger District office at (509) 447-7300 for more information. Two-pole fishing is allowed Shoreline access: Good Shoreline access is limited to area around boat launch. During the winter burbot/lake trout fishery, anglers typically fish through the ice, so walk-in access is better that time of year.

Box Canyon Reservoir is located on the Pend Oreille River in northeast Washington, and is listed in the regulations under “Pend Oreille River”. It stretches from Albeni Falls Dam, near the Idaho border, to Box Canyon Dam near Ione. This reservoir offers Largemouth and Smallmouth bass, abundant panfish, and some large Brown Trout. Northern Pike are also present, and harvest of this invasive species is strongly encouraged. Two-pole fishing is allowed Shoreline access: Good Few locations offer bank angling opportunities.

Big Meadow Lake

Browns Lake

About seven miles west of Ione on the Meadow Creek road, Big Meadow Lake is open from the fourth Saturday in April through October 31. Annual spring Rainbow Trout fry plants normally provide 10-16 inch fish. To protect breeding common loons, it is unlawful to use lead weights or lead jigs that measure 1.5 inches or less along the longest axis. Two-pole fishing is allowed Shoreline access: Good Shoreline access is good along earthen dam and a few other spots around the lake. There is a fishing dock, as well.

About eight and a half miles northeast of Cusick, in Kaniksu National Forest, Browns Lake is open from the fourth Saturday in April through October 31. Fly-fishing only, all motors are prohibited. Browns Lake receives annual plants of Westslope Cutthroat Trout fry, and offers Cutthroat from 8 - 16+ inches. Rainbow Trout, formerly stocked in the lake and now naturally reproducing in Browns Creek, are still occasionally encountered (as are Rainbow Trout x Cutthroat Trout hybrids). NOTE: Browns Creek, which previously was on the same open season as the lake, is now on a standard stream season (the first Saturday in June through October 31), and is also fly-fishing only. Check the current regulations pamphlet for catch and size limits. To find this high-elevation lake (3,450 feet), cross the Pend Oreille River at Usk, head north for five miles on LeClerc Creek Road, then northeast on Browns Creek Road, FR-1921 and FR-128 to the south shore of the lake. There you’ll find a USFS campground and boat launch. See Washington State Parks website

Boundary Reservoir An impoundment of the Pend Oreille River, which lies directly downstream of Box Canyon Reservoir. Year-round open season. This reservoir has good numbers of Smallmouth Bass and Northern pike can also be caught here. In addition, other species such as Black Crappie, Yellow Perch, and some Walleye and Brown Trout are found throughout the river. Access is available PAGE 4

for ADA accessibility information. Two-pole fishing is allowed Special fishing restrictions: Fly fishing only for this lake Shoreline access: Good Shoreline access is good around Forest Service campground.

Caldwell Lake Located about 7.25 miles as the crow flies southeast of Ione, at 2,560 feet elevation, Caldwell Lake is open from the fourth Saturday in April through October 31. This lake receives annual plants of Eastern Brook Trout, providing good fishing. Brook Trout caught from Caldwell Lake count as part of the TROUT daily limit. Internal combustion motors are prohibited. Two-pole fishing is allowed Shoreline access: Good Limited shoreline access.

Carls Lake Located about two miles as the crow flies southwest of Tiger at 3,150 feet elevation in the Kaniksu National Forest, Carls Lake is open from the fourth Saturday in April through October 31. This lake was formerly called Browns Lake, and is still identified as such on some maps. Rainbow Trout fry and catchable plants at this productive lake produce yearlings nine to 11 inches and carryovers up to 14+ inches. Winterkill conditions can limit the success of this fishery. Access is rough (which contributes to the good fishing!) by driving approximately 1.5 miles on USFS Road #510 from its junction with State Highway 20 about 4 miles west of Tiger. Two-pole fishing is allowed Shoreline access: Good Shoreline access is decent.

Conger Pond 1 5 miles northwest of Cusick. Open season runs from 4th Saturday in April through October 31. These ponds receive annual plants of rainbow trout. Two-pole fishing is allowed

See Washington State Parks website for ADA accessibility information. Two-pole fishing is allowed Shoreline access: Good Shoreline access is decent

Deception Lake Located about 4 miles east of Ione. Year-round open fishing season. This lake is hike-in only, so access can be difficult. The lake does not hold enough water every year to support fish, but when water levels allow, it is planted with rainbow trout. The scenery is beautiful, and when it holds fish it can produce great fishing. Due to its remote location, a float tube is the best choice for fishing. Shoreline access is also good. Two-pole fishing is allowed Shoreline access: Good Shoreline access is good around entire lake. Hike-in access only.

Diamond Lake Located about seven miles southwest of Newport adjacent to Highway US-2, Diamond Lake is open to fishing yearround.
