Hundreds of lowland lakes open April 22 OLYMPIA – Trout fishing in Washington reaches full speed April 22, when several hundred lowland lakes – stocked with millions of fish – open for a six-month season. That date also marks the start of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (WDFW) annual lowland lake fishing derby, which runs through Oct. 31. “Although many lakes are open year-round, the fourth Saturday in April marks the traditional start of the lowland lakes fishing season, when hundreds of thousands of anglers are expected to turn out to fish,” said Steve Thiesfeld, WDFW inland fish program manager. To participate, Washington anglers must have an annual freshwater or combination fishing license valid through March 31, 2018. Licenses can be purchased online at www.fishhunt. dfw.wa.gov; by telephone at 1-866246-9453; or at hundreds of license dealers across the state. For details on license vendor locations, visit the WDFW website at www.wdfw.wa.gov/ licensing/vendors/. WDFW fish hatchery crews have been stocking more than 16 million trout and kokanee in lakes statewide. Those fish include 2.3 million catchable trout, nearly 150,000 larger trout averaging about one pound apiece,
and millions of smaller trout that were stocked last year and have grown to catchable size. Fish stocking details, by county and lake, are available in the annual stocking plan on WDFW’s website at www.wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/plants/ statewide/. Pend Oreille County lakes are detailed in this publication. Opening weekend is a time when success rates are likely to be higher, says Thiesfeld. Of more than 7,000 lakes, ponds and reservoirs in Washington, nearly 700 have WDFW-managed water-access sites, including areas accessible for people with disabilities. Other state and federal agencies operate hundreds more. Details on water access site locations can be found on WDFW’s website at www.wdfw.wa.gov/lands/water_access/. Anglers parking at WDFW wateraccess sites are required to display on their vehicle the WDFW Vehicle Access Pass that is provided free with every annual fishing license purchased. The passes are transferable between two vehicles. Anglers who use Washington State Parks or Department of Natural Resource areas need a Discover Pass. Information on the pass can be found at www.discoverpass.wa.gov/.

Pend Oreille County Prospects Bead Lake 718 acres; Elevation 2,833 feet Eight miles north of Newport, in Kaniksu National Forest and year round open fishing season, Bead Lake is not stocked by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, but contains selfreproducing populations of kokanee, lake trout, burbot, plus numerous northern pikeminnows. Fishing at this lake should provide a unique experience. A U.S. Forest Service boat launch and parking area at the south end of the lake can accommodate six boats and trailers, but may not be available by April due to snow conditions. Check with the USFS Newport Ranger District office at 509-447-7300 for more information.
lations under “Pend Oreille River.” It stretches from Albeni Falls Dam, near the Idaho border, to Box Canyon Dam near Ione. This reservoir offers good largemouth bass and northern pike
with winter carry-over at 10 inches or better. Check the current regulations pamphlet for catch and size limits. To find this high-elevation lake, cross the Pend Oreille River at Usk,
Conger Pond 1 3.5 acres; Elevation: 2,840 feet Five miles northwest of Cusick. Open season runs from fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31. These ponds receive annual plants of rainbow trout.
Big Meadow Lake 82.6 acres; Elevation 3,423 About seven miles west of Ione on the Meadow Creek road. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Annual spring rainbow fry plants normally provide 10-16 inch fish. To protect breeding common loons, it is unlawful to use lead weights or lead jigs that measure 1.5 inches or less along the longest axis.
Boundary Reservoir 1,579.3 acres; Elevation: 1,994 An impoundment of the Pend Oreille River, which lies directly downstream of Box Canyon Reservoir. Year-round open season. This reservoir has good numbers of smallmouth bass. Northern pike can also be caught here. In addition, other species such as crappie, perch, and a few brown trout are found throughout the river. Access is available at several points.
Box Canyon Reservoir 9,317 acres; Elevation: 2,351 feet Box Canyon Reservoir is located on the Pend Oreille River in northeast Washington, and is listed in the reguPAGE 4
About two miles as the crow flies southwest of Tiger, in Kaniksu National Forest. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. This lake was also formerly called Browns Lake, and is still identified as such on some maps. Rainbow trout fry and catchable plants at this rich lake produce yearlings nine to 11 inches and carryovers up to 14 inches. Winterkill conditions can limit the success of this fishery. Access can be rough (which contributes to the good fishing), since it is four miles from the community of Tiger on the Tiger-Colville Road, and south on an unimproved road.
Conger Pond 2 Box Canyon Reservoir, better known as the Pend Oreille River
fishing. Efforts are currently underway to reduce the northern pike population in order to reduce in-reservoir and downstream impacts to other fish species. In addition to these species, this reservoir has abundant panfish and some large brown trout.
Browns Lake 87.3 acres; Elevation: 3,415 feet About eight and a half miles northeast of Cusick, in Kaniksu National Forest. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Fly-fishing only, all motors are prohibited. NOTE: Browns Creek, which previously was on the same open season as the lake, is now on a standard stream season (the first Saturday in June through Oct. 31), and is also fly-fishing only. Spring and fall provide the best action for fry-planed cutthroat trout running about eight to nine inches,
head north for five miles on LeClerc Creek Road, then northeast on Browns Creek Road, FR-1921 and FR-128 to the south shore of the lake. There you’ll find a USFS campground and boat launch. See Washington State Parks website for ADA accessibility information.
Caldwell Lake 17.1 acres; Elevation 2,545 Located about 7.25 miles as the crow flies southeast of Ione. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. This lake receives annual plants of eastern brook trout, providing good fishing. Minimum size is 12 inches, and daily limit two fish. Internal combustion motors are prohibited.
Carls Lake 8 acres; Elevation: 3,129 feet
4 acres; Elevation: 2,782 feet Five miles northwest of Cusick. Open season runs from fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31. These ponds receive annual plants of rainbow trout.
Cooks Lake 7.2 acres; Elevation: 3,074 feet Only about three miles northwest of Bead Lake, in Kaniksu National Forest. Year round open season. Catchablesize rainbow trout will be planted again this year, plus a few broodstock rainbows. To get there, find Forest Road 5015 off of Boswell Road. A USFS campground is located at this lake.
Crater Lake 1.3 acres; Elevation: 4,463 feet Located about 3 mile north-northwest of Sullivan Lake in the SalmoPriest Wilderness. Year-round open season. This lake has a self-sustaining population of introduced eastern brook 2017 Fishing Guide
trout. Access is very difficult (hike-in only).
Crescent Lake 20.4 acres; Elevation: 2,507 feet Nine miles north of Metaline Falls, adjacent to the west side of Highway 31 about a mile south of the Canadian border. Open season runs from the fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31. This lake receives annual plantings of rainbow trout fry, and should provide 10-12 inch fish by the opener.
Davis Lake 147.8 acres; Elevation: 2,182 feet Located five and a half miles south of Usk, along the west side of Highway 211. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. This lake receives plantings of rainbow trout catchables. Early and late season fishing for sunfish, largemouth bass, kokanee, rainbow trout, and eastern brook trout can be good here. Public access with boat launch can be found on the north end of the lake. See Washington State Parks website for ADA accessibility information.
Deception Lake 1.3 acres; Elevation: 2,943 feet Located about 4 miles east of Ione. Year-round open fishing season. This lake is hike-in only, so access can be difficult. The lake does not hold enough water every year to support fish, but when water levels allow, it is planted with rainbow trout. The scenery is beautiful, and when it holds fish it can produce great fishing. Due to its remote location, a float tube is the best choice for fishing. Shoreline access is also good.
Diamond Lake 754.4 acres; Elevation: 2,343 feet About seven miles southwest of Newport, adjacent to Highway 2. Open fishing season is the fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31. Largemouth bass, yellow perch, bullheads, rainbow and brown trout are available. In an effort to improve the fishery, Diamond has a cooperative net pen project 2017 Fishing Guide
that releases 12,500 rainbow trout in addition to the stocked catchablesize rainbows and browns. This year, around 700 larger triploid and a few broodstock rainbows will be added to improve the fishery. Diamond Lake has public access.
Fan Lake 73.4 acres; Elevation: 1,924 feet About eight miles northeast of Deer Park, two and a half miles west of Highway 195, and less than a mile north of the Spokane County line. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Internal combustion engines are not allowed. Annual plants of rainbow trout catchables should provide only fair fishing, with too many competing species in the lake. Public access is available.
Frater Lake 13.6 acres; Elevation: 3,209 feet About 6 ½ miles southwest of Ione on the north side of Highway 20 in Colville National Forest. Elevation is 3200 feet. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Cutthroat and rainbow trout fishing should be good this year. Northernmost of the Little Pend Oreille chain of lakes, it’s the only lake in the chain without a perennial surface-water link to the others. There is no boat launch, but car-toppers can be launched from shore. See Washington State Parks website for ADA accessibility information.
Halfmoon Lake 12.6 acres; Elevation: 3,274 feet This small alpine lake is in the Kaniksu National Forest, 7 ½ miles northeast of Usk at 3,250 feet elevation. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Halfmoon is planted with cutthroat trout fry, but eastern brook trout are present and they negatively affect the cutthroat.
Horseshoe Lake 135.6 acres; Elevation: 1,974 feet About four miles north of the Spokane County line, one mile east of Ste-
vens County, and 8 ½ miles northwest of the town of Elk. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Catchable-size rainbow trout will be planted this year. Crappie, largemouth bass, perch, sunfish, catfish, kokanee, and lake trout are all available here, with a generous kokanee limit. Check the Fishing in Washington pamphlet (www.wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/) for regulations. Chumming is not permitted. The WDFW access area has a gravel boat ramp and toilet.
5.1 acres; Elevation: 3,469 feet Sixteen miles southeast of Metaline Falls in Kaniksu National Forest and about 400 yards from the Idaho border. Also known locally as Moss Keg Lake. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Selective gear rules are in effect, and the daily limit is two trout. Cutthroat trout fry plants make for good carryovers in this small lake.
Lake Leo
Mystic Lake
32.2 acres; Elevation: 3,169 Seven miles southwest of Ione and several yards southeast of Highway 20. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Tiger and rainbow trout are available from fry plants. Numerous small crappie are also available. There is a Forest Service campground and launch on the north end.
19.1 acres; Elevation: 2,971 feet About six miles east of Usk, and a mile north of Bead Lake in Kaniksu National Forest. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Cutthroat trout fry plants grow slowly in the low-nutrient water here, with 8- to 9-inch yearlings and 11-inch carryovers. The Forest Service campground gets lots of use.
Leadbetter Lake 22.8 acres; Elevation: 2,532 Also called Loon Lake and Ledbetter Lake. In Colville National Forest, about four miles north of Metaline Falls at 2,628 feet elevation. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Rainbow trout fry plants provide the action here.
Little Lost Lake 5.2 acres; Elevation: 3,114 Located about 5.5 miles northwest of Ione at 3,103 feet elevation. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Annually planted with rainbow trout. Expect good fishing.
Marshall Lake 190.3 acres; Elevation: 2,728 Located 6 ½ miles northwest of Newport, across the Pend Oreille River. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. This beautiful lake receives annual plants of cutthroat trout fry. Public access and a resort are located at this lake.
Muskegon Lake
Nile Lake 22.2 acres; Elevation: 3,185 feet Located 6 ½ miles southwest of Ione, about 300 yards east of Highway 20 in the Colville National Forest. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Wild eastern brook trout here reach 8 inches as yearlings with a few attaining 14 inches. Fry-planted rainbow trout are also available. Competing pumpkinseed sunfish cause problems with trout growth and availability. Small boats can be launched from shore.
No Name Lake 17.5 acres; Elevation: 2,805 feet Six miles east of Usk in Kaniksu National Forest just west of Bead Lake. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Cutthroat trout fry plants produce 8-inch yearlings and 11-14 inch carryovers here. A Forest Service campground is available. Continued on page 6 PAGE 5

Hefty plants of catchable-size rainbow trout are scheduled here, plus tiger trout fry and eastern brook trout. Sacheen has public access on the northeast shore.
South Skookum Lake 28.9 acres; Elevation: 3,533 Located six miles northwest of Usk in the Kaniksu National Forest. South Skookum is open year-round. Rainbow Trout fry plants provide some nice catches. Carryovers run 10 to 11 inches. This lake has a Forest Service campground and boat ramp. To protect breeding common loons, it is unlawful to use lead weights or lead jigs that measure 1.5 inches or less along the longest axis.
Sullivan Lake 1,283 acres; Elevation: 2,592 feet Located approximately four miles southeast of Metaline Falls in Colville National Forest. This lake has a yearround open season. Kokanee will likely average 9-10 inches this year and occasional rainbow, tiger trout, and cutthroat are also available. Burbot are popular, and winter ice fishing for them
provides a temporary cure for cabin fever. The adjacent Forest Service campground has boat access. Remember to check the Fishing in Washington Regulations pamphlet prior to fishing. See Washington State Parks website for ADA accessibility information.
Upper Lead King Lake 4.3 acres; Elevation: 2,593 feet Located 5.6 miles north of Metaline Falls. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. This lake is stocked annually with rainbow trout.
Yokum Lake 43.7 acres; Elevation: 2,954 feet Six miles north of Ruby, across the Pend Oreille River, and up LeClerc Creek Road. This lake lies partly within the Colville National Forest. The lake season starts the fourth Saturday in April and runs through Oct. 31st. Cutthroat trout fry plants produce nice catches. Road access to the south end of the lake is not available until after May 30 due to road protection efforts by Simpson Lumber Company. It will open June 1 depending on moisture and road conditions but may be closed at any time due to road damage caused by vehicles, and closes on Nov. 1, in any case. A Forest Service road to the north end of the lake provides an alternative route, but it is not suitable for trailers. An unimproved campground is available. To protect breeding common loons, it is unlawful to use lead weights or lead jigs that measure 1.5 inches or less along the longest axis.

2017 Fishing Guide
Priest Lake Kokanee anglers can expect status quo Priest Lake anglers can expect Kokanee fishing to be similar to what they found last year. Idaho Fish and Game Kokanee monitoring efforts suggest Kokanee numbers remain low, but the fish that are caught should be good sized (likely 14-16 inches). Although a small increase in Kokanee abundance was observed between 2011 and 2013 in Priest Lake, the upward trend hasn’t continued in recent years. Kokanee have been a piece of the Priest Lake fishery since the late 1950’s. Westslope Cutthroat Trout and Bull Trout originally brought anglers to the area in the early 1900’s, but Kokanee
dominated angler’s attention through much of the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s. In the 1980’s, with declining Kokanee numbers in Priest Lake, much of the angling effort shifted to Lake Trout. Kokanee fishing faded away for the next 30 years, primarily due to predation by Lake Trout. However, since the 2011-13 uptick in Kokanee abundance, Priest Lake anglers have enjoyed some improvement in the Kokanee fishery. Catch rates are low compared to some regional Kokanee fisheries (i.e., Lake Pend Oreille), but larger fish size often appeals to anglers.
