Fishing licenses required in both states Lowland lake fishing season officially opens in Washington Saturday, April 27. Fishing in Idaho is open year round, though licenses are required in both states at all times. Pend Oreille and west Bonner counties offer some of the region’s best fishing opportunities. Check out the fishing prospects, starting on page 3, for a review of most lakes in Pend Oreille County. In Bonner County, the Pend Oreille River, Priest Lake, the Priest River and their tributaries offer great fishing opportunities for an abundance of species. Read about them below.

Want to fish in Idaho? Idaho has some of the best fishing in the West, including Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout. Here’s what you need:

• An Idaho fishing license valid for the year you want to fish. Different licenses are issued to residents and nonresidents. • A special resident permit is needed to fish for salmon or steelhead. Nonresidents can purchase a three-day nonresident permit, which includes a fishing license. • A two-pole permit is available for resident anglers who want to fish with two poles. Nonresidents can buy a permit to fish with two poles as well. For information about where, what and when to go on your next fishing trip, visit www.fishandgame.idaho. gov. bass and yellow perch. Bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout are also known to be in the lake. Bull trout are a protected species in Idaho. If you catch a bull trout, it must be released immediately, unharmed, back in the water. The Priest River is recommended for brook trout, cutthroat trout, mountain whitefish and smallmouth bass. The Pend Oreille River on the Idaho side, is known to have bluegill/pumpkinseed/sunfish, brown trout, bullhead catfish, crappie, cutthroat trout, lake trout, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass and walleye.

Fishing in Washington In Washington, a fishing license is required for all individuals 15 years of age and over, unless fishing for common carp, crawfish, bullfrogs, smelt or unclassified marine invertebrates. A resident fishing license is $29.50 for the entire year. Non-residents pay $84.50, and resident seniors, age 70 and older, pay $7.50. One-day, two-day, and three-day fishing licenses are also available, with discounts for seniors and active duty military.

Pike removal continues USK – For the second year, there’s a large-scale effort to remove northern pike from the Pend Oreille River. The non-native fish make anglers happy, but the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is worried about what they’re doing to native fish populations. From early March through April, WDFW worked with the Kalispel Natural Resource Department to set up gill nets throughout the river and pull in as many pike as possible. The netting efforts went on four days a week. As of April 17, they had harvested 4,740 pike. KNRD fish biologist Nick Bean said they used more equipment this year, setting 30 nets a day, and they started earlier to avoid some of the by catch such as perch and other panfish species that show up later in the spring. The annual spring survey to estimate the pike population in the river is set for May 6-10. That will determine if they’ll go for another round of gill netting. Last year through the gill netting project, a total 5,808 pike were harvested from the river. Bean said the fish were larger last year. The small fish typically slip through the nets. This year they’re seeing the 1- to 3-year-old fish they missed last year.

Washington fishing prospects NEWPORT – Opening day for freshwater fishing in Washington is Saturday, April 27. Following are the fish conditions in lakes throughout Pend Oreille County. The information is provided by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Bead Lake Lake Acreage: 718.0 - Eight miles north of Newport, in Kaniksu National Forest and year round open fishing season, Bead Lake is not stocked by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, but contains self-reproducing populations of kokanee, lake trout, burbot, plus numerous northern pikeminnows. Fishing at this lake should provide a unique experience. A U.S. Forest Service boat launch and parking area at the south end of the lake can accommodate six boats and trailers, but may not be available by April due to snow conditions. Check with the USFS Newport Ranger District office at 509-447-7300 for more information. Fishing Prospects: Burbot, Excellent; Kokanee, Good; Lake trout, Excellent; Other species you might catch: Northern pikeminnow

Big Meadow Lake

Lake Acreage: 82.6 - About seven miles west of Ione on the Meadow Creek road. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Annual spring rainbow fry plants normally provide 10-16 inch fish.

Boundary Reservoir Lake Acreage: 53.5 - An impoundment of the Pend Oreille River, which lies directly downstream of Box Canyon Reservoir. Year-round open season. This reservoir has good numbers of smallmouth bass. Northern pike can also be caught here. In addition, other species such as crappie, perch, and a few brown trout are found throughout the river. Access is available at several points. Fishing Prospects: Brook trout, Fair; Brown bullhead, Good; Brown trout, Good; Mountain whitefish, Good; Rainbow trout, Fair; Smallmouth bass, Good; Westslope cutthroat, Fair; Yellow perch, Fair; Other species you might catch: Black crappie, Crawfish, Largemouth bass, Largescale sucker, Northern pikeminnow, Peamouth, Pumpkinseed, Tench, Walleye

Box Canyon Reservoir Lake Acreage: 1,579.3 - Box Canyon Reservoir is located on the Pend Oreille River in northeast Washington, and is listed in the regulations under “Pend Oreille River.” It stretches from Albeni Falls Dam, near the Idaho border, to Box Canyon Dam near

Ione. This reservoir offers good largemouth bass and northern pike fishing. Efforts are currently underway to reduce the northern pike population in order to reduce inreservoir and downstream impacts to other fish species. In addition to these species, this reservoir has abundant panfish and some large brown trout. Fishing Prospects: Black crappie, Fair; Brown bullhead, Good; Brown trout, Fair; Largemouth bass, Good; Mountain whitefish, Fair; Pumpkinseed, Good; Rainbow rout, Fair; Smallmouth bass, Good; Westslope cutthroat, Poor; Yellow perch, Fair; Other species you might catch: Brook trout, Bull trout, Crawfish, Grass pickerel, Largescale sucker, Northern pikeminnow, Peamouth, Tench, Walleye

Browns Lake Lake Acreage: 87.3 - About eight and a half miles northeast of Cusick, in Kaniksu National Forest. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Fly-fishing only, all motors are prohibited. NOTE: Browns Creek, which previously was on the same open season as the lake, is now on a standard stream season (the first Saturday in June through Oct. 31), and is also fly-fishing only. Spring and fall provide the best action for fry-planed cutthroat trout running about eight to nine inches, with winter carry-over at 10 inches or better. Check the current regulations pamphlet for

catch and size limits. To find this high-elevation lake (3,450 feet), cross the Pend Oreille River at Usk, head north for five miles on LeClerc Creek Road, then northeast on Browns Creek Road, FR-1921 and FR-128 to the south shore of the lake. Caldwell Lake Lake Acreage: 17.1 - Located about 7.25 miles as the crow flies southeast of Ione, at 2,560 feet elevation. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. This lake receives annual plants of eastern brook trout, providing good fishing. Minimum size is 12 inches, and daily limit 2 fish. Internal combustion motors are prohibited. Northern pike vs. tiger muskie – Know the difference Washington state now has both northern pike and tiger muskies inhabiting public waters. Both fish are “esocids,” which means they are members of the esocidae family. Other members of that family include muskellunge (true muskie) and pickerel. All share a similar, long body shape, oval in cross-section (hence the name “pike,” meaning spear or lanceshaped) and have a large duck-bill mouth with big teeth and a dorsal fin located near the tail fin. Northern pike in Washington are the result of downstream movement of illegally stocked fish in other states (the Pend Oreille River from the Clark Fork and Flathead River systems in Montana and the Spokane River from Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho) or direct illegal stocking into a lake (Newman and Liberty lakes in Spokane County). Tiger muskies in Washington are brought into the state by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) as a unique game fish opportunity. Unlike northern pike, which are prolific spawners, tiger muskies are the sterile result of a cross between a true muskie and a northern pike. Because northern pike are prolific spawners, their numbers cannot be controlled in a predictable manner, but

because tiger muskies are functionally sterile, their numbers and density in the waters in which they are stocked, can be precisely controlled. The WDFW stocks tiger muskies into seven lakes in the state: Mayfield Lake (Lewis County), Merwin Reservoir (Cowlitz County), Lake Tapps (Pierce County), Evergreen Reservoir (Grant County), Silver Lake and Newman Lake (Spokane County) and Curlew Lake (Ferry County). Tiger muskies are managed as a game fish and have a minimum size limit of 50 inches and a daily bag limit of one fish. Northern pike are classified as a prohibited species and have non-minimum size limit or daily bag limit. Prohibited species must be dead before leaving the water in which they were caught. They may be returned alive only into the water in which they were caught. It is always illegal to transport any live fish without a fish transport permit or to move live fish from one public or private water to another. Illegal stocking causes both biological and economic damage and costs the state hundreds of thousands of dollars every year in taxpayer money to remove illegally stocked fish. The current known distribution of northern pike in Washington is:

• The Pend Oreille River (including Box Canyon Reservoir and Boundary Reservoir) from the Idaho state line to the confluence with the Columbia River and downstream in the main stem of the Columbia River to just upstream of Kettle Falls; • The Spokane River from the Idaho state line into Long Lake, aka Lake Spo-

kane; • Newman Lake in Spokane County; • and Liberty Lake in Spokane County. If you capture a northern pike in any other water in Washington, the state asks that you kill it and take an identifying picture if you have a camera. After that, contact the nearest WDFW office and ask for the area or district fish biologist.

Access can be rough (which contributes to the good fishing!), since it is four miles from the community of Tiger on the Tiger-Colville Road, and south on an unimproved road. Lake Acreage: 20.4 - Nine miles north of Metaline Falls, adjacent to the west side of Highway SR-31 about a mile south of the Canadian border. Open season runs from the 4th Saturday in April through Oct. 31. This lake receives annual plantings of rainbow trout fry, and should provide 10-12 inch fish by the opener. Davis Lake Lake Acreage: 147.8 - Located five and a half miles south of Usk, along the west side of Highway SR-211. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. This lake receives plantings of rainbow trout catchables. Early and late season fishing for sunfish, largemouth bass, kokanee, rainbow trout, and eastern brook trout can be good here. to Highway US-2. Open fishing season is the 4th Saturday in April through Oct. 31. Largemouth bass, yellow perch, bullheads, rainbow and brown trout are available. In an effort to improve the fishery, Diamond has a cooperative net pen project that releases 12,500 rainbow trout, in addition to the stocked catchable-size rainbows and browns. This year, around 700 larger triploid and a few broodstock rainbows will be added to improve the fishery. Diamond Lake has public access. Lake Acreage: 13.6 - About 6½ miles southwest of Ione on the north side of Highway SR-20 in Colville National Forest. Elevation is 3200 feet. Fourth Saturday in April through Oct. 31 open season. Northernmost of the Little Pend Oreille chain of lakes, it’s the only lake in the chain without a perennial surface-water link to the others. South and North Skookum Lakes Lake Acreage: 28.9, 42.0 Located six miles northwest of Usk in Kaniksu National Forest. The Skookum lakes are at 3,529 feet elevation. Open 4th Saturday in April through Oct. 31. Rainbow trout fry plants provide some nice catches. Carryovers run 10 to 11 inches. This lake has a Forest Service campground and boat ramp. Eastern brook trout are numerous in North Skookum Lake which has a state owned campground and resort. To protect breeding common loons, it is unlawful to use lead weights or lead jigs that measure 1.5 inches or less along the longest axis in South Skookum. Fishing Prospects: Rainbow trout, Good

Sullivan Lake Lake Acreage: 1283.0 - Located approximately four miles southeast of Metaline Falls in Colville National Forest. This lake has a year-round open season. Kokanee will likely average 9-10 inches this year and occasional rainbow, tiger trout, and cutthroat are also available. Burbot are popular, and winter ice fishing for them provides a temporary cure for cabin fever. The adjacent Forest Service campground has boat access. Remember to check the Fishing in Washington Regulations pamphlet prior to fishing. See Washington State Parks website for ADA accessibility information. Yokum Lake Lake Acreage: 43.7 Six miles north of Ruby, across the Pend Oreille River, and up LeClerc Creek Road. This lake lies partly within the Colville National Forest. The lake season starts the 4th Saturday in April and runs through Oct. 31st. Cutthroat trout fry plants produce nice catches. Road access to the south end of the lake is not available until after May 30 due to road protection efforts by Simpson Lumber Company. It will open June 1 depending on moisture and road conditions but may be closed at any time due to road damage caused by vehicles, and closes on November 1, in any case. A Forest Service road to the north end of the lake provides an alternative route, but it is not suitable for trailers. An unimproved campground is available.
