Grizzly Football Senior quarterback Koa Pancho is an offensive threat. In addition to having a good arm, Pancho was also a leading rusher last year. He finished third in Northeast A League rushing statistics, with 570 yards and nine touchdowns. He also finished third in passing stats, with a 58 percent completion rate, the highest in the league. At 5 feet 9 inches and 160 pounds, junior Tug Smith has added a little size and performed well as a
receiver in an early game. Top prospects: Pomante says junior Adam Moorhead, who kicks field goals and extra points in addition to playing wide receiver and defensive back, is a good prospect, as are a pair of linemen – 6 feet 1 inch, 200 pound junior Lance Knight and 6 feet 2 inch, 260 pound sophomore Luke Nichols. Sophomore Jacob Kirkwood, a 6 feet 1 inch, 180 pound wide receiver/ defensive back, rounds out Pomante’s top prospects. Key losses: Newport will miss the play of Fred Houck, Jesse Reyes, Johnny Quandt and Andy Russell.
Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast A League: Pomante says Newport can compete with any team in the league. “As far as where we’ll finish, that gets decided on game nights,” he said. Last year the Grizzlies finished the

Prior to that he spent 10 years as a defensive line coach for Whitworth University in Spokane, 20 years as coach at Rogers High School in Spokane and two years coaching at Servite High School, a Christian school in Anaheim, Calif.
From Page 1 Freeman dominated the NEA last year and returns with a strong defense. Deer Park is also contender, as is Lakeside and Colville. Other teams in the eight team Northeast A League include Chewelah and Riverside. Strengths: Coach Dave Pomante counts the upperclassmen as among his team’s strengths. Weaknesses: The team isn’t very deep, Pomante said.

Grizzly Volleyball Top returnees: When asked about top returnees to this year’s team, Pearson cited seniors Kylyah Mercurius (middle hitter), Faith Hood (outside hitter), Crystal Miller (outside hitter), Madi Hofstee (right side hitter), and Trystan Potter (defensive specialist). He also pointed out middle hitter and sophomore Cora Pelleburg. Top prospects: “We have a couple of new athletes to our program that we are very excited about,” Pearson said of top prospects for the Grizzlies, mentioning senior Olivia Witter, junior Hailey Eggleston, and junior Cydni Lewis. “We are also very pleased with where our junior varsity and C-teams stand after a week of practice.” Key losses: Key losses for the team include outside hitter Jalin Earl, defensive specialist and setter Emily Hunt, middle Audrey Price and defensive specialist Hannah Hansen. Overall projections of the team’s chances in the Northeast A League: “We like our chances to compete within our league and finishing in the top three, the higher the better,” Pearson said of overall projection of team’s chances in the league. “Lakeside and Freeman will still be the top two teams on paper, with us fighting it out with everyone else in a really tough league.”

Strengths: The Grizzlies strength lies in the seven to nine girls that can really play well, providing a very balanced offensive attack. “Our middle hitters will lead the way, but our outsides aren’t far behind in their progression,” Pearson said. Weaknesses: As for weaknesses the girls will have to overcome, Pearson said it was a tough call, but the team will continue to work on speeding up their transitions so that attacks are quicker in order to take time away form the opponent to play defense. “So, although this isn’t a weakness, this is a very big component that we are working on,” Pearson said. Additional observations: The impression the crowd should come away with though is that the girls are going to play an exciting, fast-paced, great brand of volleyball that will lead to a lot of success this year, Pearson added. “Our girls have set some very lofty goals and I am very pleased and proud of their efforts to make those realities. I’m proud to be their coach.” Changes in rules: One change which affect the team is that the No. 1 out of the Northeast A League district tournament qualifies automatically to state, while the NEA No. 2 hosts the Caribou Trail League No. 3 and the NEA No. 3 travels to the CTL No. 2.

(509) 447-0505
Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1A League: Frederick said he feels more confident this year at the Grizzlies’ chances to place high in the league. “The challenge is who is going to be able to maintain and develop that endurance,” said Frederick. “We’re raring to go and to see what we can do.” He pointed out Medical Lake boys’ cross country and both girls’ and boys’ from Deer Park as being the teams to beat. He said Riverside and Lakeside have also been good competitors. Strengths: Frederick says he appreciates that his team “gets along with one another” and that the kids show perseverance. “They don’t complain

and they push each other positively,” said Frederick. “It’s the kind of dramafree, work smart environment that I find enjoyable.” Weaknesses: With that smoke from regional wildfires that hung in the air at the beginning of the month, the team was forced to practice indoors, hindering their experience at long distance running. “I think we might need four to five meets to find out stride,” said Frederick. “We’re still building our team. Now that the smoke has gone away we can practice better.”

Strengths: Martin says his team is hard working, tough, and resilient and has “team first” players. He says they’re good kids, coachable, have competitive spirit and a willingness to improve. Weaknesses: The Spartans graduated 10 seniors last year so new varsity players without much varsity game experience have to be considered a weakness. Priest River didn’t have a big turnout this year, so depth and player numbers are a concern. Comments: Martin is proud of the team’s work ethic so far. They have a desire to improve daily and put the needs of the team first. They do their best to achieve the team goals we’ve set out for this season, he said. “Very Saturday, Sept. 23 vs. Gooding:

Spartan Cross Country Top prospects: For the boys, Clark said seniors Spencer Sedgwick and Drayven Ayers; juniors Caleb Gleason, Slava Negrieiev, Cameron Parkes, and Jordan Phillips. For girls, he pointed out senior Rheini Proctor, junior Karleigh Durham, and sophomores Izzie Schmidt and Sharnai Hogan. Key losses: Former seniors Leif Williams, Nicodemus Eisler, Caleb English, and Enara Seiler. Team strengths: It looks like having the top boys in the league on the team could go a long way toward being in the team’s favor. “We’ve got girls that are hungry and excited to
improve,” Clark said. “Having a girls team show up from day one is a plus.”
Coaching Experience: Clark has 14 seasons as PRLHS Head Coach and 20 seasons as a running coach.
Team weaknesses: The team has a lack of team members compared to Timberlake, but otherwise steady compared to all other teams.
Assistant Coaches: Annette Marks
Comments: As for team goals, Clark expects the boys to win first place in the league and the girls to be the most improved. “When the Spartan Cross Country Team hits the trails this season fans can expect to see student athletes that are hungry to make a legacy for themselves for future runners to see,” Clark said. “Our motto is ‘How do we want to remember this season?’”

Key losses: Seniors Clay Pelton, Gabe MacAlevy, Corbin Maltba, Warren Best, and Cody Pelton Overall projection of the team’s chances in the Intermountain League: “It’s up for grabs,” said Lawler. “Each team has lost key players and its anybody’s guess on who will finish on top.” Lawler added that he expects his Spartans to be competitive in every
game and have fun. Team Strengths: Lawler cited team chemistry and a strong work ethic. Team Weaknesses: The young team’s lack of experience could be a challenge to overcome. Comments: Lawler said the Spartans’ goal will be to maintain possession of the ball, create opportunities, and use team width and depth on the field. “When the Spartan boys’ soccer team takes the pitch this season fans can expect to see team spirit and pride, dedication, and team unity,” said Lawler. HERE WE GO, SPARTANS, HERE WE GO! 2017 Fall Sports Preview
Spartan Girls Soccer Top returnees: “We have our solid eight returners from last year who will be the core of the team with some great new additions, including Hailey Hatfield, Jasmine Martin, Shayla Martinez, Halie Moore, and Hannah Palfrey,” said Fraser. Top prospects: Hannah Brengle, Lillian Nolan, Liann Kren, Chelsea Brown, Bailey Teal, Karah Fink, and Lilllith Hernandez. Key losses: “We lost six amazing seniors last year who were our key players, including AveryLynn Summers who made the Intermountain League (IML) team, Elizabeth Downs and Jesi Huntley who led defense,
Melissa Krampert who led our team in goal, and both Rachel Akre and Madison Hemphill who kept our midfield together,” said Fraser. Overall projection of team’s chances in the league: Fraser is placing her bet on none other than Priest River Lamanna High School. “You have to set yourself as number one, right?” Fraser said. “Because what great team has ever won by having low expectations?” She sees CDA Charter School, St. Maries, Timberlake, and Bonners Ferry as being tough opponents. Strengths: Her girls’ strength is in their teamwork, said Fraser.
“They push one another and at the same time encourage and never criticize, and it has built us into a trusting team that is willing to work with one another and have a variety of combinations passing on the field,” Fraser said. Weaknesses: Most of the team has not played competitive club soccer, so they are a little behind on experience on the ball, but are more than willing to make that up with effort.
Head coach: Shannon Fraser Age: 26
Coaching experience: Second season as PRLHS Head Coach and five years of coaching soccer at other recreational levels. Teaching experience: Fraser is a second year science teacher at PRLHS and researcher for the University of Idaho. Athletic experience: Fraser has played soccer her entire life, including playing on the club volleyball team Sting, with the Olympic Development Program, and at Oregon State University. Gabriel Oliveira Senior #17
Caleb Ziesmer Senior #72
Top returnees: Seniors Tanner Shanholtzer, Dylan Hendershott, Colton Hansen, Roddy Pierre, Caleb Ziesmer, C.J. Balcom; juniors Jed Cupp, Mose Pierre and Jerome Teasley and sophomores Tanner Shanholtzer and Nate Allen are the top returners. With a half dozen seniors, coach Troy Hendershott says the team should have good leadership. Top prospects: Junior Colby Seymour comes from Inchelium to join the team. He and junior Joe Rocha are considered top prospects. The Panthers also have some good freshmen, including Dylan Reijonen and Gauge Battin, as well as a couple exchange students who haven’t played American football before. Gabriel Oliveira comes from Brazil and will be the Panther’s place kicker. Tommaso Casu comes from Italy. Key losses: The Panthers only lost two players to graduation. Wyatt Shanholtzer will be missed, as will Abreel Rocha. Overall projection of team’s chances in league: Panther coach Troy Hendershott says he looks to Cusick and Republic to be the top two teams in the Northeast 1B North conference. Cusick, Selkirk, Columbia, Inchelium, Northport and Republic make up the conference. The other division is the Northeast 1B south, made up of Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Entiat, Odessa-Harrington, Pateros, Wellpinit and Yakama Tribal. When the crossover games happen and the best of the conference play the best from Northeast 1B south conference, Almira/Coulee-Hartline and Odessa-Harrington have to be considered the best of that conference. The No. 1 and No. 2 teams from the North will play their counterparts
from the South for seeding to the state tournament. The top two teams from each conference will go on to state. The no. 3 teams from each conference will play for the last remaining playoff slot. Strengths: Hendershott says the Panthers will be a good run team, with an experienced line blocking for running backs Jed Cupp and Colton Hanson. “We’ll be able to pound the ball and that should open up the passing game,” he says Weaknesses: Hendershott said the small number of players is a weakness. “If you lose one kid, that could take you from being a good team to mediocre,” he said. Head Coach: Troy Hendershott Age: 46 Coaching experience: This is Hendershott’s second year as head coach for Cusick. He has been an assistant coach eight years, running the defense for the Panthers. He also spent a year as an assistant junior high football coach. He concentrates on defense and leaves offensive play calling to assistant coach Tye Shanholtzer. Occupation: Works at Ponderay Newsprint Co. Athletic experience: Hendershott has been involved with the Cusick football program since he was a little kid. He was a ball boy as a grade school student, and then went on to play four years of high school football for the Panthers. He played on one of the last 11-man Panther teams. The Panthers play eight-man football now. Assistant coaches: Tye Shanholtzer, Tell Hamilton and Brian Becks

Panther Volleyball Top returnees: seniors Katie Hulet, Rylee Brown; juniors Taylor Allen, Nicole Stensgar, Cheryl-Ann Williams, Emma Hardie; sophomores Leire Dominguez-sol, Jalyna Castillo; freshmen Anwyn Anderberg, Chole Williams, Danelle Sam and Leslie Ford. Top prospects: Rylee Brown, Taylor Allen, Katie Hulet, Nicole Stensgar, Emma Hardie are Coach Eric Finley’s top prospects. The Panthers will also have two eighth graders, Haylee Nelson and Chalin Nelson on the team. Key losses: The Panthers graduated six seniors from last year’s team, including Alana Keogh, Talieya Tonasket, Maki Ranck, and Jacki Sage. Overall projection of team’s chances in the league: Finley predicts the team will finish in the top three in the Northeast 1B North division. The North is made up of teams from Cusick, Selkirk, Curlew, Inchelium, Northport and Republic. Strengths: Finley counts height and hitting capabilities among the Panther’s strengths. Weaknesses: The Panthers don’t have the numbers of players they would like. Having a smaller team with less opportunity for playing options is a weakness, Finley says. Additional comments: “We have a good strong group of athletes this year,” Finley says. “Their hard work
and dedication to the team and their wanting to succeed and win has driven them to work harder and prove that they can compete with some of the best teams in the league.” Head coach: Eric Finley Age: 29 Coaching experience: This is Finley’s second year coaching Cusick, but he refereed for the State of Washington for six years. He reffed the volleyball state tournament two seasons ago. He knows the rules of the game inside and out. He refereed out of the Colville Valley Association, which includes every team in Cusick’s league, and has watched other teams in the league play up close for years. He said he can tailor his team’s practices to each team they will face in a given week, and he knows what calls he can challenge in a game and win. Occupation: Finley is concentrating on volleyball this year. Athletic experience: Finley didn’t play sports in school, but he’s been involved in the volleyball and basketball program at Cusick for the past 11 years. He graduated a 12-year senior from Cusick High School in 2006. Assistant coaches: Shelby Vickery, Alicia Elsasser

Ranger Football Top returnees: Senior offensive lineman/linebacker Hunter Carman and wide receiver/defensive back Peter McAnerin are back for the Rangers. There are no juniors but there is a strong crop of sophomores who got significant playing time last year, including quarterback Jay Link, running back Ty Taylor, center Slade Powers, ends Zech Curran and Steven Davis, running and defensive back Aiden Penney and wide receiver/defensive back Justin Krabbenhoft. Top prospects: New to the team are linemen Chris Williams and Wyatt George. Williams is a 6 feet, 173 pound junior.
Luke Couch Freshman #2
Peter McAnerin Senior #7
Jay Link Sophomore #10
Key losses: The Rangers lost Jacob Couch, Jared Taft and Ben Avey to graduation. Overall projection of team’s chances in the league: Link says he’s optimistic about the Rangers’ chances, but is reluctant to make a prediction of where they’ll finish. He says Cusick and Republic are among the strongest teams in the Northeast 1B North division of the Northeast 1B league. Republic won the division last year and has 30 players out again this year, a large number for eightman football. The North division is made up of Cusick, Selkirk, Columbia, Inchelium, Northport and Republic.
Calvin Rood Senior #13
Justin Krabbenhoft Sophomore #16
Ty Taylor Sophomore #21
Republic won the division last year but they also graduated quite a few players. Link didn’t make a prediction of where the Rangers will finish, with so many young players, it’s hard to say, but he is optimistic. The other division is the Northeast 1B South, made up of Almira/CouleeHartline, Entiat, Odessa-Harrington, Pateros, Wellpinit and Yakama Tribal. In week 10 of the season, the No. 1 team from the North division will play the South’s No. 1 team for the one and two seeds to state. The division’s number two teams will play each other for the number three and four seeds.

So four teams from the league will go to state, but with the addition of Yakama Tribal School to the league, there will likely be five teams that qualify and may well be six. That is being decided after this went to press.

Ranger Volleyball Top returnees: Seniors Emma Avey, Mykenzie Maupin; juniors Jenna Couch, Whitney Dawson and Quinn Zimmerman; and sophomores Allison Petrich, Kaitlyn Chantry and Shelby Rood are all back. Top prospects: Coach Pam Zimmerman expects Jenna Couch will do well as setter, Whitney Dawson to be a strong hitter, and Emma Avey and Quinn Zimmerman to play well as defensive specialists. Dawson is a strong server and an offensive force. They were all part of last year’s winning team and got some playoff experience.
benefit of only losing one player last year, so return a cohesive group with a record of winning. Weaknesses: Zimmerman didn’t list any team weaknesses and there may well not be any against North conference opponents, where the Rangers were dominant last year. But Northeast 1B South opponents may be another matter. South opponents kept the Rangers from getting out of districts last year and will likely be strong again this year.
Key losses: The Rangers will miss the play of Lexy Ellsworth, who graduated.
Head coach: Pam Zimmerman
Overall projection of team’s chances in the league: Coach Zimmerman didn’t say how she thinks the team would do this season. The Rangers won the Northeast 1B North conference last year, finishing 11-1 in conference play and 13-2 overall. But the other conference teams – Curlew, Northport, Republic, Inchelium and Cusick – were young last year and look to have many experienced players returning as well.
Coaching experience: This is Zimmerman’s fourth year as head coach for the Rangers.
Strengths: The Rangers will have the
