GRIZZLY BASEBALL Newport baseball has 28 players out this year, something second year coach Gary Reese is enthused about. TOP RETURNEES: seniors Hunter Peterson, Owen Leslie, Jacob Weber; junior Tug Smith; sophomores Jacob Kirkwood, Jesse Cummings. TOP PROSPECTS: “We have a lot of new guys out and some good freshmen coming in,” Reese says. “We have 28 kids out this year.” Junior Danny Bradbury has to be a top prospect. While this is his first year at high school baseball, he has had success in football and basketball. KEY LOSSES: Newport graduated five players: Conrad Madison, Fred Houck, Matthew Kauffman, Jesse Reyes and Colton Malsbury. OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE NORTHEAST A LEAGUE: “We will be just fine,” says Reese. Newport plays in the Northeast A League, which is made up of Chewelah, Freeman, Riverside, Lakeside, Deer Park, Colville, Medical Lake

and Newport. Freeman and Colville were strong last year; Freeman won the league and made it to state, where they finished third. STRENGTHS: Reese says, “It kinda comes down to our quote this year, ‘you just got lesson number one; don’t think it can only hurt the ball club.’” The large turnout has to be considered an advantage, with more than twice as many players turning out this year. WEAKNESSES: Reese says the team needs a winning attitude. “We won four games last year and the team was OK with that,” he said. “That thought process has to change to contend in the NEA League.”

leyball and girls basketball coach for Cusick. In addition to coaching high school volleyball and girls basketball, he has coached football, boys basketball and baseball. OCCUPATION: Reese is a semi-retired juvenile probation officer.

ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE: Reese played all three sports in high school. He grew up in the Omak area and played college baseball at Eastern Washington University for two years before SEE PAGE 8

KEY LOSSES: Dalton Arrand, who filled boys’ slots in javelin, shot put and discus, graduated. OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE LEAGUE: HicksFrazer says the Grizzlies will bring their gung ho spirit to each meet.

STRENGTHS: “We are dedicated and motivated,” Hicks-Fraser says. WEAKNESSES: There are seven new green athletes in a smaller team than last year. HEAD COACH: Lindsay Hicks-Frazer AGE: 53

GRIZZLY BOYS SOCCER Newport High School boys’ soccer returns with 36 athletes and a 2017 team record of 9-4. TOP RETURNEES: senior Kade Zorica, junior Adam Moorhead, and sophomore Sam Thomas. TOP PROSPECTS: Newport High School boys’ soccer coach Mark Zorica cites numerous team members with potential, including Adam Moorhead, Dan Gentle, Greyson Le, Troy Hill, Cazden Medrano, Kade Zorica, Phelipe Figueiredo, Sam Thomas, Taven Groves, Mitch Cunningham, Lee Ray Turner, Nick Roberts, Ekko Stoeppler, Gabe Oliveira, Anthony Cornwell,

and David Rodriguez. KEY LOSSES: seniors Jace Hoadley, Kai Thomas, Johnny Quandt, Jesse Young, Ryan Leon and Josh Cunningham. OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE NORTHEAST A LEAGUE: Last year the Grizzlies won the NEA semi-final against Lakeside and barely lost to Colville in the district championships. With some seasoned soccer players and an influx of eager new players, Newport shows signs of replicating a league win, at the very least.

“Leadership is very strong with this group.” WEAKNESSES: In a repeat of last year’s cold, wet weather leading up to spring, the boys’ soccer team had their first practice in the high school gymnasium, then got a workout shoveling snow off of Stratton Elementary soccer field so they could get some outside practice in. “The team is young in varsity experience and forming team chemistry, but they are getting better everyday,” says Zorica. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: “When the 2018 Newport Soccer Team takes the

pitch this season fans can expect to see heart, passion for the game, and 100-percent effort,” says Zorica. HEAD COACH: Mark Zorica AGE: 46 COACHING EXPERIENCE: U-6 through U-20 ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE: Zorica played club soccer from age five to 15, high school soccer and adult league soccer. He also was a USSF referee for 12 years and a NCAA referee for four years. ASSISTANT COACH: Connor Mullaley

STRENGTHS: “We love to compete; we are a physical team,” Zorica says.

Geoff Pearson Head Coach

Newport has a new tennis coach – Geoff Pearson. Pearson is new as head coach but his wife, Jocelyn, coached last year, so he is somewhat familiar with last year’s players.

OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE NORTHEAST A LEAGUE: “With tennis an individual sport that is scored as a team, I think we have individuals that can make some noise in our league, “ Pearson says. Newport will compete in the eight-team Northeast A League, with Chewelah, Colville, Deer Park, Freeman, Lakeside, Medical Lake and Riverside. Riverside was strong last year but graduated quite a few players. Freeman boys and Lakeside girls are among the stronger teams in the league. STRENGTHS: Pearson says there are a combination of experienced players and newcomers on this year’s team. “We have some good experience returning in singles, and our top returners are being pushed by some individuals new to the program,” he says. WEAKNESSES: “We are still shoveling snow off the courts – our weakness is lack of playing time,” Pearson said in March. TUESDAY, APRIL 10

ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS: “We are a new program that is building a love for tennis,” Pearson says. “However, we have some very talented individuals that just need time on the court. I think our community will be pleasantly surprised by the level of success our kids will have this year – our league will be surprised, but probably not pleasantly!” HEAD COACH: Geoffrey Pearson AGE: 37 COACHING EXPERIENCE: Pearson has nine years experience as high school tennis coach and 10 years overall coaching experience. He coached Newport volleyball this year. TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Pearson has 14 years teaching experience. He returned to the classroom this year after serving as vice principal and athletic director last year. He teaches high school science. ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE: Pearson says he has played or coached tennis since he was 6 years old and played high school tennis. ASSISTANT COACHES: Brandon McDaniel, Jocelyn Pearson

The Spartans play in the four-team Intermountain League with Kellogg, Timberlake and Bonners Ferry. STRENGTHS: “Our attitudes and work ethics are great; these young men come to practice and work hard every day,” Schultz says. “We see ourselves as a team, which include the good times as well as any bumps that may happen during the course of the season.” WEAKNESSES: “Our overall numbers are down this year,” Schultz says. He says the team has been unable to get out on a field and play baseball much because of the weather and field conditions. TOP PROSPECTS: junior Jed Cupp and senior Rylee Brown are two new players who show a lot of promise. Sophomores Alex McCann, Jared Nelson and exchange students Tomasso Gasu and Rew Rew Chatchairattanavet are also new to the team this year. KEY LOSSES: Cusick didn’t have any seniors last year, so didn’t lose anyone to graduation.

OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE NORTHEAST 1B LEAGUE: “We should challenge the top two teams, Almira/CouleeHartline and Odessa,” Cusick coach Randall Herzon says. Cusick plays in the nine team Northeast 1B League with Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Columbia, Curlew, Inchelium, Northport, Odessa, Republic and Selkirk. Cusick finished the regular season in third place in the Northeast 1B League last year, with a 9-5 league record. Cusick finished the season with a 10-6 overall record. ACH won the league title.

PANTHER TRACK Cusick track is small this year with only three athletes, but for what they lack in size, they make up for with a competitive edge and pluckiness. Two of the three Panthers, Gracie StrangeOwl and Nicole Stensgar competed at the 2017 state tournament, with StrangeOwl winning second place in the girls’ 1,600 meter, second place in the 3,200 meter, third place in the 800 meter race, and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Junior Zahira Delgado joins the team for her first year of track and field. TOP RETURNEES: Nicole Stensgar and Gracie StrangeOwl. KEY LOSSES: Seniors Alana Keogh, Michael Grzechowiak, Wyatt Shanholtzer, Bryce Nomee and Alberto Magaña; junior Jessica Hankey, who is competing with Newport High School. ON THE TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE NORTHEAST 1B NORTH LEAGUE: “I think there’s little doubt that we’re

heading to state again this year,” says Cusick track and field coach Jenni Jones. “We’re small, but we’re hardworking.” STRENGTHS: Jones says that having Stensgar and StrangeOwl return is a boon to the team, particularly in their mentorship of junior high track and field athletes that they train with. She also praises Delgado’s work ethic and determination. WEAKNESSES: Obviously, the team’s low number of participants this year keeps the Panthers from garnering as many team points at meets as other schools, but Jones says she’s not really worried. “Track and field is more of an individual sport, and the individuals I have like to have fun and be competitive,” Jones says. RANGER BASEBALL With a dozen boys turning out, the Rangers don’t have a lot of players. “We’re not very deep, that’s for sure,” says Selkirk coach Jeremy Link, who also coaches Ranger football. With four seniors and a host of experienced sophomores, the Rangers returned seven of nine starters, including the pitchers from last year’s team. TOP RETURNEES: Seniors Peter McAnerin, Calvin Petrich and Calvin Rood; sophomores Jay Link, Ryan Zimmerman, Aiden Penney, Ty Taylor, Zech Curran. McAnerin and Petrich were named All League last year.

TOP PROSPECTS: Freshman Luke Couch KEY LOSSES: The Rangers lost Braden Taylor and Ben Avey to graduation. OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE NINE-TEAM NORTHEAST 1B LEAGUE: “We’ll be competitive,” Link says. Selkirk plays in the Northeast 1B League with Almira/ Coulee-Hartline, Columbia, Curlew, Inchelium, Northport, Odessa, Republic and Cusick. Link says ACH and Odessa are favorites in the league, but he expects Cusick and Selkirk will battle for second or third.

Last year Selkirk finished the regular season in fourth place in the Northeast 1B League, with a 9-5 record. The Rangers ended the year with an 11-8 record. STRENGTHS: Link says the team has good leadership. WEAKNESSES: The minimal number of players is a definite weakness, Link says. With only 12 players and a strict maximum pitch count for the pitchers, the Rangers can’t afford to lose anybody. HEAD COACH: Jeremy Link AGE: 41

ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS: “I’m excited to coach this group of athletes,” says Vermeulen. “They are all very motivated and want to compete. Our first meet was cancelled on Saturday, March 24, and this was the first meet cancelled in my 16 years at Selkirk High School, and our athletes were upset about this, which tells me they want to be in the sport of track and field.” CHANGES IN RULES, (CLASSIFICATIONS) WHICH AFFECT YOUR TEAM: “There is talk that we may no longer have the girls 4X200 relay in 2019,” Vermeulen says. “I feel this would have a big impact on the B1 league, as it’s easier to field a 4X200 than a 4X400 relay.”

STRENGTHS: “Strong leadership with returning athletes,” Vermeulen says.

HEAD COACH: Susan Vermeulen

“NEW ATHLETES TO THE SPORT HAVE GREAT POTENTIAL AND ARE VERY COACHABLE. IT’S A VERY MOTIVATED GROUP OF ATHLETES.”
