Touring the Gems of Buchanan County By Dan Cohen, Executive Director Buchanan Co. Conservation Board

The beauty and natural wonders of Buchanan County exist all around us. These natural gems, however, are often hidden from us as we motor down the blacktop. This is the second in a series of articles that will serve as a tour of some of the splendid places protected by the Buchanan County Conservation Board for public use and enjoyment. No matter where you live in Buchanan County, you are never more than a 20-minute drive from some natural splendor, protected and managed for everyone to enjoy! This tour of Buchanan County gems will visit the west-central townships – Westburg and Perry. Crumbacher Wildlife The largest of the Conservation Board’s public properties is located just a few miles southwest of Independence. Crumbacher Wildlife Area is a diverse area of wetlands and prairies, located along a wooded corridor of Lime Creek. Signs direct visitors to Crumbacher on County Road D22 a mile west of Independence. The signs lead to the east entrance, but parking lots also exist on the north (240th St.) and south (250th St.) sides of the property. Conservation Board staff mow paths throughout Crumbacher. The paths provide great access to various features of the area, but also serve as burn breaks for 15 separate prairie and savannah management areas. The exact location varies from year to

year depending on which areas are planned for burns the following spring. Equestrian use of trails is allowed at Crumbacher. To get an idea of the variety of nature to be experienced, park at the northwest lot and start walking south. As you begin your walk, you will pass a windbreak of pines, cedar, and shrubs on your right and vast open prairie to your left. The prairie was reconstructed on previous farm land. As you continue walking, you will come to a constructed wetland. This time of year, you are likely to see a variety of waterfowl, wading birds, swallows, muskrats and other wildlife that use the wetland. As you continue through the mid-section of Crumbacher, you will pass some native stands of prairie – vegetation that dates back prior to settlement. Some of this area includes young burr oak trees that are slowly establishing to create a savannah habitat. Lime Creek meanders through the woods on your left. Soon, you will be walking along a long section of pines and hardwood trees that were planted about 25 years ago. The trail spills out into a native prairie area along 250th St. The diversity of habitats at Crumbacher provides opportunities for deer, turkey, pheasant, and waterfowl hunting, and viewing of lots of other wildlife. Hodges and North Wildlife Area The Widger Quarry south of Jesup was operated for many years by Basic Materials Corporation. Once the rock was played-out, plans were made to convert the site to a natural area, and donate it to the county. The Conservation Board named the property in honor of two area educators – Hodges and North. Hodges and North Wildlife Area is located just south of Highway 20, off County Road V62. After taking ownership, Conservation Board staff began the long work of rehabilitating a much altered landscape. Years of quarry operation left behind compacted ground with little to no sub-soils. Gullies needed to be filled and seeded, additional areas of upland habitat were seeded, and invasive plants – especially crown vetch – required a long-term control plan. The result of all this work is one of the best restored upland habitat areas in the county. In addition, there is a quarry pond that contains some fish. This year, the pond received its first-ever stocking of channel catfish. The Wapsipinicon River – Perry Township The Wapsipinicon River corridor is the main natural feature in Buchanan County. The Wapsi is a natural treasure, and has been recognized as such through its designations as a Protected Waters Area, Bird Conservation Area, and state

water trail. The river corridor provides the bulk of the county’s wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation opportunities for area residents. This is especially true for the river corridor in Perry Township. Through willing agreements with conservation-minded landowners, much of the Wapsipinicon River corridor in Perry Township is protected in public trust. Public lands begin with the DNR’s Buckles and Clay Area on the south side of the river near the west county line. Located on County Road V62, on the north side of the river, the county’s Cutshall Area contains woods, wetlands and river access for those wishing to hunt, hike, fish, or begin a float downriver. As you begin floating the river at Cutshall, you will have the Anderson Addition public lands on your south. As you continue downstream you will float along the DNR’s Cutshall property (north side), and then Buchanan County’s Mickey Fox Area, which stretches to the west side of Littleton. South of the Littleton Dam is the McGlaughlin Easement public river access. A little further down is the Cortright Wildlife Area. Cortright Wildlife Area is located along River Road, with signs pointing the way on County Road D16 on the east side of Littleton. Cortright is a diverse area containing about a mile of Wapsipinicon riverfront, with sandbars and fishing holes. In 2010, a channel was dug to connect a couple of Cortright’s five ponds to the river – providing an enhanced area for fish to spawn and potentially over-winter. Much of the 190 acres are wooded, but an area of restored upland prairie exists on the west side. Cortright is a great place to hike, view wildlife, hunt, fish, and relax. Make a point to visit the often-hidden gems of Buchanan County, or simply be aware the next time you drive by and see a Conservation Board arrowhead sign. These places exist for people to enjoy! Watch the newspaper for the next installment of Touring the Gems of Buchanan County! Pictured, inset: Public natural areas are enjoyed while paddling the Wapsipinicon River through Perry Township.

Free community shred day On April 29, Independence Federal Bank for Savings, along with the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging and Iowa Senior Medicare Patrol, will sponsor a free Community Shred Day at the Independence Healthy Lifestyles (Senior) Center parking lot. Organizers encourage any resident, any age, in Buchanan County to bring documents containing personal identifiable information to the senior center from 2 – 4 PM to be shredded on-site. “Any information that contains social security numbers, names and date of birth, drivers license numbers, account numbers and any other identifiable information should always be shredded before discarding,” commented Mike McGill, Vice President at Independence Federal Bank for Savings. “On-site shredding will shred your documents during the Community Shred Day so you can be at ease that your personal information is discarded properly.” Those unable to bring documents to be shredded on that date, are encouraged to purchase a shredder to safeguard against identity theft. McGill said, “The key is that anything with personal information should be kept in a secure place or shredded and under no circumstance should you give any personal information out over the phone or electronically unless you initiated the phone call to a trusted source.” Information about identity theft prevention will be available at Independence Federal Bank for Savings as well as the senior center leading up to and during the event. “The shred day is for anyone in Buchanan County; but, for those who need assistance, we will have personnel at the senior center to help unload your documents. Please ask a trusted person to help carry and load your documents for transport to the shred day,” commented Diana Johnson, Senior Services Coordinator with Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging for Buchanan County. “We encourage everyone to attend the community shred day to keep your personal information out of the hands of crooks.” For questions, call Independence Federal Bank for Savings at 319.334.2545 or the senior center at 319-334.7011.

Whole Grains for Whole Health

“Whole grains are cereal grains that consist of the intact, ground, cracked, or flaked kernel, which includes the bran, the germ, and the inner most part of the kernel” –Food and Drug Administration. Do you know the whole truth about whole grains? Learn the importance of adding more whole grain products to your diet. All grains begin as “whole” grains. A grain is made up of three parts: the bran, the germ, and the endosperm. The bran is the outer layer of the grain/kernel and contains important nutrients. The germ is the embryo and also contains vitamins and minerals, along with protein and healthy fats. Lastly, the endosperm is the largest part of the kernel and is the germ’s food supply.

PAGE 7

When whole grains are refined to other products, the bran and the germ are typically removed and only the endosperm remains. This means that the product loses many of its important nutrients during the refining process. The WHOLE grain is much healthier because it includes the grain in its entirety and, therefore, provides more protein, fiber, and important vitamins and minerals.

Look for whole grains at the grocery store! Have your family try a new whole grain option in place of a refined alternative. Try whole wheat spaghetti, whole grain rice, or whole wheat bread. Millet, bulgur, and quinoa are a few other great whole grain options to try.

Auxilians’ generosity beneďŹ ts RMC Submitted by RMC The 2014 session was scheduled to end Tuesday, April 22. While at the time I write this, it’s unclear if we’ll finish exactly on time, we’re going to keep working right up to the end to resolve our differences and grow the middle class. I hope that we can continue to work across the aisle to debate the budgets. Nearly all major pieces of the budget are moving and have passed one chamber or the other. A few have been agreed upon by both the House and Senate while others have been sent to a special conference committees comprised of legislators from each party and each chamber to reconcile our differences. It was great to have my family come visit with me at the Capitol. We had the privilege to tour the entire Capitol together and even traveled to the top of the dome. It is always nice to have family visit us here and have my fellow colleagues able to learn a little bit more about me and my family. On Wednesday, my fellow legislators and I also had the privilege to meet Head Coach Fred Hoiberg and the Iowa State University Men’s Basketball team. It was great to be able to honor their accomplishments this year. Thanks to all of the players, coaches, and staff for a successful year. I will continue to work in a bipartisan manner for all policies that strengthen Iowans, enhance our skilled workforce, reduce poverty, and enrich our rural schools and communities. I will continue to work diligently in my committees and to represent my district to the best of my ability. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns regarding legislation or just have a concern regarding our district and state. I would enjoy hearing from my constituents and helping to resolve any issues that may come up. It is my honor and a humbling experience to be the State Representative for our community. I appreciate the messages and correspondence I receive from people in the District. You can always contact me anytime at bruce.bearinger@legis.iowa. gov or 515-281-3221.

Justice budget strengthens public safety

This week, the Senate voted to appropriate more than $554 million to ensure safety for Iowans and communities throughout the state by adequately funding our prisons, our courts, the Department of Public Safety, the Attorney General, and other agencies and functions of our justice system. As approved by the Senate, this year’s Justice Budget (House File 2450) provides extra money to the Department of Corrections to hire more prison guards. Prisons are dangerous places. Additional guards will help keep the staff and public safe by maintaining control and preventing escapes. The Justice Budget also invests in Iowa’s successful Drug Courts, which reduce crime by teaching offenders how to stay off drugs and become responsible, contributing members of society. Participants are held accountable for their behavior and must adhere to the strict rules of the program or go straight to prison. Drug Courts also save taxpayer dollars. Each offender who participates in Drug Court saves thousands in tax dollars each year. Consistent with the Governor’s recommendation, the Senate’s Justice Budget also provides full funding for victims’ assistance grants. The House failed to approve adequate funding for these grants, which go to programs that assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Last year, these programs helped more than 27,000 Iowans find safe housing, seek counseling, get jobs and learn how to escape from an abusive relationship. We also voted to put more state troopers on Iowa highways. More patrol officers make for safer roads and quicker response times when someone needs assistance, whether it is responding to an accident, a crime or a simple breakdown.

is Alcohol Awareness Month Iowa to implement Electronic Death April is Child Abuse Prevention Month April Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) joins the national Submitted by RMC recognition of April as Alcohol Awareness Month. Designated Registration System Children deserve a chance at a bright future and it starts by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, The Iowa Department of Public Health implemented Iowa’s Electronic Death Registration System on Monday in an effort to increase the speed and accuracy of death reporting across the state. “The new registry will provide better service to physicians, hospitals, funeral homes and other parties who are working on the same case, said Jill France, chief of the Bureau of Health Statistics. “This will ultimately provide Iowa families faster and more efficient service by being able to provide a death certificate more quickly. Iowa’s Electronic Death Registration System will now allow reporting parties to electronically ‘sign’ death certificates. This eliminates the previous practice of mailing original paper copies between providers, state administrators, and county registrars. The electronic system also interfaces with the Social Security Administration to report a death, which can speed the issuance of benefits to survivors and provide increased accuracy of information. “With the new system, family members can request a death certificate at any county recorder’s office, and not just in the county where the death occurred or at the state office in Des Moines, explained France, “which leads to better service for Iowans.

with creating a community that invests in their safety and well-being. This April, Regional Medical Center’s (RMC) Parents As Teachers (PAT) and the Delaware County Prevent Child Abuse Council are helping share Prevent Child Abuse Iowa’s messages on child abuse prevention. Child abuse is preventable and everyone plays a part in promoting social and emotional well-being of children and families in the community. Home visitation helps educate and support families, while at the same time making a wide range of community and professional services available to the family. Through PAT’s home-based program, an array of services may be offered. Home visitation programs strive to create social networks for new parents by connecting them with other community and hospital-based prevention programs. This helps break down the social isolation experienced by many new parents. “Preventing child abuse is truly a community effort. With everyone’s participation, we can become a community that reaches out to families by creating support networks before a crisis occurs, shared Tina Ostrander, PAT Educator. For information about RMC’s Parents As Teachers program, call 563-927-7551. Visit www.pcaiowa.org for information about Prevent Child Abuse Iowa.

Inc. (NCADD), this month-long effort is intended to increase public awareness of alcohol use, reduce stigma, and encourage local communities to focus on alcohol-related issues. This year’s theme is Help for Today, Hope for Tomorrow. More than 18 million individuals nationwide suffer from alcohol use disorders. Millions of others, such as family members and friends, are negatively affected by another person’s alcohol use. “Twenty-five percent of children in the United States have been exposed to alcohol use disorders in their family, said Julie Hibben, substance abuse prevention coordinator at the Iowa Department of Public Health. “Youth who experiment with alcohol before age 15 are four times more likely to become alcohol dependent. Education and prevention are critically important to reducing alcohol-related problems, and many Iowa communities are highlighting the issue of underage drinking during the month of April. More than 30 town hall meetings across the state will be held to educate, empower, and mobilize communities to take action. Visit www.stopalcoholabuse.gov/townhallmeetings/findameeting/default.aspx to find an area town hall meeting. Administrative Professionals Week and Administrative Professionals Day, Wednesday, April 23, 2014 call attention to the important workplace role of administrative professionals. Administrative Professionals Day/Week was originally organized in 1952 as “National Secretaries Week by the National Secretaries Association (now known as the International Association of Administrative Professionals) in conjunction with public relations executive Harry Klemfuss and a

consortium of office product manufacturers. It was established as an effort to recognize secretaries for their contributions in the workplace, and to attract people to secretarial/administrative careers. The association successfully campaigned U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer to proclaim the first National Secretaries Week on June 1-7, 1952. He designated Wednesday, June 4, as National Secretaries Day. Sawyer, Barrett and Woodbridge participated in ceremonies held in

Emcee Bill Reedy pointed out those attending the 46th Annual Sustaining Banquet for Buchanan County Democrats Saturday, April 5 in Quasqueton came to “celebrate the fact we are Democrats.” Guests were able to meet candidates for several races affecting area residents, including state Senator Jack Hatch of Des Moines, Democratic candidate for Iowa governor. Hatch attended the banquet last year while researching a possible run for the state’s top office. This year, he attended as a candidate and outlined his goals to the county’s party faithful. One concern he would address as governor is increasing the gas tax. During his travels throughout Iowa, Hatch has realized that poor roads and bridges have a detrimental effect on commerce, particularly in rural areas. In county races, there or seats are five Democratic candidates for Supervis retiring, currently held by Ralph Kremer, who is AnScott include running Those and Gary Gissel.

Supervisors hear request for road improvements By Kris Wilgenbusch, THE NEWS

During their regular Monday meeting, Buchanan County Board of Supervisors Gary Gissel, Ellen Gaffney and Ralph Kremer met with County Engineer Brian Keierleber and residents from Shady Oaks Estates, located on 280th Street, Section 6 of Jefferson Township. Residents in this area would like to see their section of the road paved due to heavy traffic, dust control and safety. They explained their children cannot play outside because of the dust and it is unsafe to walk on the road. Supervisor Gissel explained there is not funding available for such a project and Keierleber explained the county, state and federal funding process. The group asked if the county would allow them to pave it and pay for it themselves. The board explained they would have to be classified as an “Improvement District” according to the Code of Iowa, section 358C.3 in order for that to be allowed. After discussion, it was decided that the county attorney office will research Improvement District requirements and report back to the board of supervisors. Buchanan County Public Health Director Amy Marlow presented her monthly report. The department recently completed an Iowa Department of Public Health Audit, required in order to maintain funds from the local Public Health Services grant. The consultant conducting the grant commended the department for their knowledge of poli-

cy and procedures and maintaining accurate documentation. The department is planning an emergency tabletop exercise for May 14; this exercise will involve all county emergency services. Supervisors approved the Public Health monthly report. Gissel presented bids submitted by Smedley Electric to upgrade lighting in the Public Health Dept. meeting room. The bid includes replacing six fixtures with those that are larger and more energy efficient, along with switches and sockets for $1470. The bid was approved. Gissel also presented a $1748 bid from Gissel Construction for replacing the Public Health building entrance door and upgrading the entrance to the meeting area. Gissel stated he requested bids from two other contractors but had not received them yet. Motion was made by Kremer, seconded by Gaffney to approve the bid; Gissel abstained. Supervisors approved a Proclamation for May as National Preservation Month, presented by Leanne Harrison, president of Buchanan County Historical Society. The National Trust for Historic Preservation encourages using the month-long opportunity to highlight how they celebrate and save historic places year-round. This year’s theme, “New Age of Preservation: Embark, Inspire, Engage,” is meant to “excite your current supporters and introduce new audiences to the work you are doing to enrich and preserve the places that make your community special.” Story continues on page 22.
