Cedar Valley Hospice to hold Tree of Love ceremony The 2014 Cedar Valley Hospice (CVH) Tree of Love event allows the opportunity to celebrate a loved one during this beautiful and meaningful time of year. This fundraiser offers unique snowflake ornaments or bookmark depending on level of giving.

BCHC to present 4th annual Recipes for Real Life Cooking Class Submitted by BCHC

Buchanan County Health Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (BCHC) Fourth Annual Recipes for Real Life Cooking Class will get underway Tuesday, Jan. 13. The six-week class will be held 5-6 PM Tuesdays at Oak View Senior Living Complex, located on the hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campus.

The cost for all six classes is $40.

Participants will watch as the guest chefs prepare quick, easy and healthy meals that their own families love! Nutritional considerations when recovering from an injury or surgery While recovering from an injury or surgery often times our primary focus is on two things: the amount of pain we are in and wondering when we will be back to normal.

These concerns are normal and expected, but often our nutrition is left unaddressed. Unfortunately there is not a magical diet that will speed our recovery; however, there are diets that can hinder our recovery.

Some individuals tend to decrease their caloric intake to unhealthy levels while in the stages of recovery. This is not recommended due to the body lacking the proper amount of healthy calories needed to fuel recovery. Recovering from injury or surgery can also take a significant emotional toll, causing some individuals to cope by ingesting large quantities of unhealthy calories. This is also not recommended. Although we are providing our bodies with a sufficient amount of calories to fuel our recovery, we are also providing ourselves with an excess amount that will ultimately be stored as fat. Gaining additional fat can hinder recovery and require additional work following recovery.

Every individual recovers differently, so there is not a â&#x20AC;&#x153;cookie cutterâ&#x20AC;? diet that works with everyone. In general, it is recommended that individuals should continue to eat a well-balanced, colorful diet with sufficient caloric levels of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Sufficient levels are determined by many factors including height, weight, and activity level. Additional supplementation is typically not needed, unless otherwise indicated by your physician.

Households who are over LIHEAP regular income guidelines may be eligible for LIHEAP benefits through our medical waiver component. The medical expenses must be documented, paid, and non-reimbursable.

LIHEAP applications will be accepted through April 30, 2015. Assistance is provided on a first-come, first-served basis so applicants are encouraged to apply early. Households approved for LIHEAP are protected by a moratorium agreement between the utility companies and the State of Iowa. As a result of this agreement, households approved for LIHEAP cannot have their utilities disconnected during cold weather between Nov. 1, 2014, and April 1, 2015.

Now is the time to begin feeding birds

Overall, different feeds attract different birds. Nyjer thistle attracts finches. Suet attracts woodpeckers. Lower priced millet or milo, spread on the ground, is big with mourning doves, sparrows and other ground feeding species. Be wary of discount mixes, though. Fill a feeder with it, and you could end up with much of it scratched out to the ground as birds waste it, to get to the “good stuff.” Consumers may be money ahead feeding the more expensive stuff … and buying less of it overall.

Schlarbaum touts sunflower hearts for woodpeckers and titmice, too. Experiment and see what food sources attract preferred birds. Most of that is keeping winter bird feeders stocked … and watching the feathered palette of color on the blanket of snow in the yard.

Stepping it up a notch Should just feeding and watching birds in the yard not be enough, take it to the next level. Two popular winter weather activities include the Christmas Bird Count, which gets teams outdoors in a specified area; and the Great Backyard Bird Count, where people simply tally birds seen from their window.

Results are valuable, as these “citizen scientists” provide information on wintering birds; especially winter territories and trends, such as movement into new areas.

Though promoted nationwide, a couple websites; www.iowaaudubon.org and www.iowabirds.org provide more information. That includes links to local chapters, clubs or blogs … and lots more information that is “for the birds.” Also, any full service bird feed supply outlet has information on the counts, winter bird watching walks and other activities and products to step up winter bird watching involvement.

Those waiting for wintry weather to start stocking the bird feeders – it’s here.

With temperatures dipping into the teens and even single digits, it is creating crowds at those backyard feeders.

The latest U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Outdoor Recreation Survey indicates that 609,000 Iowans feed wildlife.

Most of that is maintaining winter – and late fall – feeding stations for birds. Migrating songbirds are setting up their feeding stops now, ahead of the heavy duty wind, cold and snow. They want to expend as little energy as possible, while consuming maximum calories to stay warm.

The bonus to us?

“It’s just a great way to bring the outdoors right into our homes. We can see the songbird activity, hear their cheery calls. They brighten our spirits,” said DNR Wildlife Diversity Technician Pat Schlarbaum. For him, the dark-eyed juncos showing up in the fall trigger the call to step into action.

The first step is cleaning feeders. Removing debris and bacteria reduces the chanced of disease this winter. Use a weak bleach and water solution to scrub and rinse them, whether they are still hanging in the yard … or are stored in the garage somewhere.

Next up? Run an extension cord and small heating element to the birdbath.

“If you are the one providing water for the birding community; you are probably going to have the largest selection of songbirds visiting your backyard,” predicted Schlarbaum.

Those who have just one feeder and one choice of feed, black oil sunflower seed attracts the widest variety of “desirable” songbirds. Cardinals, nuthatches, tufted titmice, blue jays, chickadees and more flock to sunflower seeds. Flip the bag over and check the fat content. The higher it reads, the better it is for birds.

Percent of adults who gamble up 9% from 2011

Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has released a new study on gambling among Iowa adults. Gambling Attitudes and Behaviors: A 2013 Survey of Adult Iowans, prepared by the University of Northern Iowa Center for Social and Behavioral Research, estimates almost 1.8 million adult Iowans gambled during the past 12 months. Of that number, it is estimated 8,000 adult Iowans could be classified as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;problemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gamblers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know the majority of Iowans who gamble do so simply because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun and they do not have financial or emotional problems as a result of it,â&#x20AC;? said Eric Preuss of the IDPH Office of Problem Gambling Treatment and Prevention. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, this study found 16% of adult Iowans were classified as â&#x20AC;&#x153;atriskâ&#x20AC;? gamblers in 2013. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 369,000 Iowans who may have one or more symptoms of problem gambling.â&#x20AC;?

Symptoms of problem gambling include: â&#x20AC;˘ Thinking a lot about gambling, such as past gambling experiences, future gambling ventures, or ways of getting money for gambling; â&#x20AC;˘ Needing to gamble with larger amounts of money or with larger bets in order to get the same feeling of excitement; â&#x20AC;˘ Repeatedly trying to cut down or stop gambling without success; â&#x20AC;˘ Feeling restless or irritable when trying to cut down or stop gambling; â&#x20AC;˘ Gambling to run away from problems or to get relief from feeling depressed, anxious, or bad about yourself; â&#x20AC;˘ After losing money gambling, often returning another day in order to win back your losses; â&#x20AC;˘ Lying to family members, friends, or others in order to hide your gambling from them; â&#x20AC;˘ Losing or almost losing a significant relationship, job, or an educational or career opportunity because of gambling; and â&#x20AC;˘ Relying on others to provide money to relieve a desperate financial situation caused by gambling.

Deer harvest on similar pace

Hunters reported harvesting 23,807 deer as of Nov. 17, which is within 100 deer of where it was a year ago at this time despite the recent cold weather. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The rut is going strong and will continue for the next week to 10 days,â&#x20AC;? said Jim Coffey, forest wildlife research technician for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hunters should focus on food sources and bedding areas where does go as bucks will be checking these areas out.â&#x20AC;?

The reported number of bucks taken has increased 1,000 while the reported doe harvest is down 1,000, which reflects the changes in regulations.

Shotgun season begins Dec. 6 and, to avoid standing in line, hunters are encouraged to purchase their license early.

Iowans who shopped for their annual family Thanksgiving dinner can feel good knowing the cost of feeding a family of 10 is steady and virtually unchanged from a year ago, according to the annual American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Thanksgiving Dinner Price Survey. The average cost for the annual fest in this year is $49.41, or less than $5 per serving. Despite rising food costs for some items at the grocery store, the average Thanksgiving dinner has been stable and affordable since 2011, averaging around $49 for a family of 10, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great news for Iowans shopping on a budget. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The cost of a classic Thanksgiving meal again works out to be less than $5 per serving, providing an incredible value for families,â&#x20AC;? said Dave Miller, Iowa Farm Bureau director of research and commodity services. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be able to provide a special holiday meal for your family for less than a cost of a fast food meal is remarkable.â&#x20AC;?

A handful of dairy items were included in the AFBF study, which represents a growing sector of Iowa agriculture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As demand for American dairy products continues to grow both domestically and internationally, we are seeing an increase in dairy production,â&#x20AC;? Miller said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In Iowa, milk production is up 4% from last year, and during that time, we have seen dairy cow herds grow by around 1,000 head.â&#x20AC;?

Sweet potatoes, dairy products and miscellaneous ingredients necessary to prepare the meal represented items with slightly increased price tags this year, although given decreases in other products, the overall meal price remained stable. Turkey, the staple of the Thanksgiving meal, saw retail prices decline slightly, with a whole bird averaging $21.65, or $1.35 per pound. The survey shopping list includes turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of celery and carrots, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and beverages of coffee and milk, in quantities sufficient to feed 10 people.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Thanksgiving survey was the 29th annual study conducted by AFBF. Every region of the country was represented in the annual AFBF Thanksgiving Price Shopping Survey, with 179 volunteer shoppers in 35 states participating.

Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors made three visits in October. The first visit was to Oasis Well and Pump to see the new office and tour a building. Jeff and Diane Ogden explained that they and their sons are 6th and 7th generation well drillers. Wells in their service area typically run 180-500 feet deep and the average home needs a well that produces 20 gallons of water per minute.

Ambassadors then visited 2nd Story Office Suites, at 100½ E. Main Street, which Wes Schulte owns and recently completed remodeling.

Chamber Executive Director Jack Klaus said three nicely restored office suites are available for rent and Schulte anticipates interest will be high.

The third visit was to Northeast Iowa Telephone Service (NEITS), which is newly remodeled. Mike and Gabrielle Corkery, and Verizon representatives, explained the Verizon phone service through NEITS will benefit the community.

Iowans can expand financial knowledge and skills without leaving home with free online classes and webinars from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and eXtension. The only requirement is a computer with Internet access.

Teens and parties: Good idea?

â&#x20AC;&#x153;My friend is having a party at her house. Can I go?â&#x20AC;? This question may strike fear in a parentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart. But with some forethought and planning, a party of teen friends can be a fun and safe event, said Cindy Thompson, a family life/family finance program specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Start by asking questions,â&#x20AC;? Thompson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where will the party be held? How will your teen get to the party and back? Find out who will be there â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including adults â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and what they will do and the hours of the party. Tell your teen you will be checking with the host parent.

Then call the host parent, even if your child objects.â&#x20AC;?

Thompson offers some tips to help parents prepare their teens before the party. Stress that if plans change, your teen must let you know.

Many teens have a cell phone, so calling home should be easy. Rehearse what teens can do if they want to leave the party for any reason. Tell them they can call you at any time. Remind

them about expectations concerning his or her behavior, including drinking, substances and sex. Stay up until the teen returns home. Then give them a good-night hug. Just consider it a loving â&#x20AC;&#x153;check-up.â&#x20AC;? After the party, debrief with the teen. Talk about who was there, what was fun and what wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Be suspicious if your teen frequently asks to sleep elsewhere after a party, especially if the group of friends never stays at your home,â&#x20AC;? Thompson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And what if your teen wants to have the party at your house? Again, preparation is the key,â&#x20AC;?

Thompson continued.

First have him or her make a list of who will be invited. Encourage a limited number of guests, as large groups can get out of hand. Make clear who is invited in order to prevent unexpected guests from crashing the party. Settle on a time for the party to end before invitations are issued. Open-ended invitations can let the party go on later than desired. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Help your teen figure out some party activities and make suggestions for refreshments.

The Buchanan County Zoning Commission will meet in regular session at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the Buchanan County Courthouse Lower Level Assembly Room, located at 210 5th Avenue NE Independence, IA. Environmental Health/Zoning Administrator, Chad Beatty presented his monthly report. There were 12 septic system permits; four well permits issued; and 29 well water samples in October. Two ďŹ&#x201A;oodplain projects were completed in November. Beatty is reviewing the Zoning Ordinance for updates. The department is planning to install 55 E911 signs before it freezes if possible. The department received a nuisance complaint East of Independence. Black Hawk County Health department will be presenting to the Board of Health at their next meeting on what duties they perform for Buchanan County. Motion by Gissel second by Kremer to accept the report. All in favor, motion carried.

County Engineer, Brian Keierleber presented contracts for the construction of the Amish Sawmill bridge in Fairbank Township. After discussion, motion by Gissel second by Kremer to approve the contract with Taylor Construction, Inc. of New Vienna, project #IBRCC010(85)--8E-10 in the amount of $398,960.24 for the replacement of a bridge on Dillon Ave. in Sec. 22 of Fairbank Township and authorize the chairman to sign. All in favor, motion carried.

At 9:47 a.m. the public hearing regarding the Gary and Kathy Hersom zoning request was called to order with Kris Wilgenbusch, Tari Robertson, George Aldrich, Steve Allsop, Gary Hersom and Chad Beatty, Zoning Administrator present. Mr. Beatty read the minutes

Make it clear that you will not allow illegal substances or alcohol. Tell your teen ahead of time that anyone caught with these items will have to leave and you will call their parents.

Stress that once guests arrive, they must stay at the party. If they leave early, they will not be allowed to return,â&#x20AC;? Thompson said.

Finally, be at home during the party. Maintain a discreet presence so that teens know that a parent is around, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t participate in activities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Walk around outside your home occasionally. And consider inviting another set of parents if the party is large,â&#x20AC;? Thompson said. Some planning, along with open communication with teens, can help alleviate fears regarding attending and hosting parties and will ensure all have a safe and fun evening.

Early freeze has manure applicators looking to DNR for advice

Extremely cold temperatures and early snowfall have left manure applicators asking the DNR if they can safely and legally land apply manure.

For many livestock and poultry facilities, the answer is yes, if manure is applied in a way that protects water and meets required separation distances. For most totally roofed (confinement) facilities that have a construction permit issued after April 1, 2002, the answer is more complicated.

When the ground is frozen and manure is surface applied, it’s more likely to run off – increasing the loss of nutrients and the potential for water pollution.

“There are some common sense approaches that will help producers keep manure runoff out of our waters,” said DNR Environmental Specialist Cindy Martens.

• Pick flat areas to prevent runoff when it warms up.

• Make sure there are no lakes, streams or surface waters near application areas.

• Keep manure out of grassed waterways and ditches that could transport it to water.

• Avoid applying manure near tile inlets or in areas that drain to tile inlets. Consider covering inlets with plastic pipe.

• Manure losses increase late in winter when manure is applied on snow, according to research at Iowa State University. So, surface applications are less likely to lose manure earlier in the winter. However, avoid surface applying before it rains or warm weather that can cause snow to melt.

“There are also legal requirements producers must follow,” Martens added. “Most important, follow the required separation distances. Take a look at your manure management plan and construction permit for any restrictions.”

• Make sure the manure management plan is updated to reflect surface application rates.

• Confinements with construction permits may have additional requirements and must call the DNR before land applying if the permit requires injection or incorporation. These producers need written permission from DNR before surface applying manure.

• Keep records of the rate, date, method of application and fields where manure was applied.

Confinements with liquid manure and no permit restrictions may apply manure on snow-covered ground until Dec. 21 and on frozen ground until Feb. 1. On those dates, additional restrictions apply to confinements applying liquid manure.

Again, it’s important to follow separation distances, update manure management plans before surface applying and keep manure out of waters.

Snow blower safety starts before powering up equipment

According to weather forecasters, the winter of 2014-15 will see below-normal temperatures for about three-quarters of the nation. That means snow blowers could be getting a workout this winter. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) offers the following safety tips to assist homeowners, contractors and business owners as they power up their snow removal equipment.

Make sure the snow blower is in good working order before the first flakes fall. Change the oil. Install a new spark plug and inspect the belts to be sure they are in good working order. If the fuel wasn’t drained last winter before storing the snow blower, drain the tank now. Check the auger (always in the “off” position) and adjust any cables.

Make sure it starts.

Review the owner’s manual. Read the owner’s manual and review the manufacturer’s safe handling procedures.

Before it snows, clear pathways. Snow can sometimes hide objects that might clog the chute of a snow blower, or cause damage to the machine or people nearby. Remove doormats, sleds, boards, wires, and other debris from the pathways you intend to clear.

Use the right fuel. It’s important to have the proper fuel on hand, as filling stations may be closed if there is a power outage after a snowstorm. Store fuel properly and buy the type recommended by the manufacturer. It is illegal to use any fuel with more than 10% ethanol content in outdoor power equipment (for more information on fueling properly see www.LookBeforeYouPump.com).

Handle fuel carefully. Use non-spill containers with spouts. Fill up the fuel tank outside before starting the engine and while the engine is cold. Never add fuel to a running or hot engine. Store fuel in a clean, dry, ventilated area, and never near a pilot light, stove, or heat source. Never smoke around fuel.

Dress properly for the job. Wear adequate winter garments and footwear that can handle slippery surfaces. Put on safety glasses, and avoid loose fitting clothing that could get caught in moving parts. Tie back long hair.

Operate the snow blower in visible conditions. Never operate the snow blower without good visibility or light.

Aim carefully and avoid people and cars. Never throw snow toward people or cars. Do not allow anyone to stand in front of the snow blower. Keep children or pets away from the snow blower when it is operating.

Use extreme caution on slopes and hills. Do not clear snow across the face of slopes. Be cautious when changing directions on slopes. Do not attempt to clear steep slopes.

Turn off the snow blower to clear a clog or repair it. If the machine needs repair, debris or built up snow removed, always turn off the snow blower. Wait for all moving parts to come to a complete stop. Disconnect the spark plug wire or power cord.

Key safety tip: Never put hands inside the auger or chute. Use a clean out tool (or stick) to unclog wet snow or debris from the snow blower. Hands should never go inside the auger or chute.

Know where the cord is. Be aware of where the power cord on electric-powered snow blowers at all times. Avoid tripping. Do not run over the power cord.
