Regional Medical Center River Ridge Pavilion opens Dec. 11 Submitted by RMC

The new Regional Medical Center (RMC) River Ridge Pavilion opens Dec. 11 with an array of technology and convenience. Patients will enter under the covered carport into the new main entrance. Inside is the relocated welcome desk; gift shop; registration desks for lab, radiology, respiratory care, specialty clinic, and Messerly Surgical Care; Jerry’s Place (public dining); and access to OB and inpatient services. The current main entrance will be used for emergency and surgery patients. “The building is finished but we are just getting started,” said Lon Butikofer, RN, PhD. “The impact of our $19 million dollar project was done with the patient in mind. This 40,000+ square foot addition provides the needed space in which to provide services to a growing patient population and service area, advancement in our technology, and expanded specialty services.” Pictured: Main lobby (above) and welcome desk (at right).

Members of the Upper Iowa University family joined the l community and residents of Hillcrest Home in Sumner on Dec. 6 to celebrate Emma Hough’s 111th birthday. Hough, who was born on Dec. 2, 1904, is not only UIU’s oldest living alumna, but also the oldest living Iowan recorded with the Iowa Department of Aging. Hough (’26) was an active student during her time on the Fayette campus. A member of Sigma Tau Delta, the Biology Club, Aonia, YWCA, WAA, and PEACOCK yearbook, she was the winner of the campus tennis tournament her sophomore year. The honor led to the now supercentenarian being named the head women’s tennis coach during her final two years of college. Graduating with a double major in English and biology, the Sumner native was hired as the physical education teacher and head girls basketball coach at her hometown school. She later taught in Ironwood MI and served as librarian in Manistee MI. In 1969, she and her husband, Charles, both retired from teaching and, two years later, returned to Sumner to live. Soon after her husband’s death in 1981, Emma began to travel with friends. Before she set down her suitcases at the age of 95, she had traveled to 48 states, England and Germany. Most recently, Upper Iowa University recognized Hough as a guest of honor during the University’s 2015 Homecoming parade.

Pictured: UIU Provost Kurt Wood (left) and Andrew Wenthe, UIU vice president for external affairs, were among the Upper Iowa University family to attend Emma Hough’s 111th birthday celebration in Sumner on Dec. 6. Wenthe presented Hough, a 1926 UIU alumna, with a photo taken of her prior to the 2015 UIU Homecoming parade with President William R. Duffy and his wife, Sharon.

Yard and garden: Paperwhite Narcissus By Richard Jauron, Kendall Evans, ISU Extension and Outreach

Narcissus is a popular flowering bulb that is typically grown indoors over the winter months. Paperwhite narcissus is a type of narcissus flowering bulb which makes for great home decoration during the holidays. Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach horticulturists share information on paperwhite narcissus to help brighten Iowans’ homes this winter. How do I force paperwhite narcissus? Paperwhite narcissus are easy to force indoors. The bulbs can be forced in clear, shallow bowls with no drainage holes or pots. When forcing paperwhite narcissus in bowls, partially fill the container with washed gravel or stones. Place the bulbs on the gravel or stones. Then place additional gravel or stones around the bulbs, leaving the tips, noses, of the bulbs exposed. Add water to the bowl until it touches the bottom of the bulbs. Maintain the water at this level throughout the forcing period. When forcing paperwhites in pots, partially fill the container with potting soil. Place the bulbs on the soil surface. Then add additional potting soil. When potted, the tips of the bulbs

should stick above the potting soil. The level of the soil mix should be ½ to 1 inch below the rim of the container. After potting, water each container thoroughly. Keep the potting soil moist throughout the forcing period.

Place the planted bulbs in a cool, 45-50°F, dark location for 2-3 weeks to encourage root growth. When the shoots reach a height of three inches, move the plants to a sunny window with a temperature of 60-70°. To prolong their bloom period, move the paperwhite narcissus from direct sunlight when the plants begin to flower. What are some good paperwhite narcissus varieties for forcing indoors? Paperwhite narcissus cultivars include “Bethlehem” (creamy white petals, yellow cup, mild musk fragrance), “Galilee” (pure white flowers, moderate musk fragrance), “Grand Soleil d’Or” (yellow petals, orange cup, sweet fruity fragrance), “Inbal” (white flowers, mild pleasant fragrance), “Nir” (white flowers, moderate musk fragrance) and “Ziva” (pure white flowers, strong musk fragrance). Can paperwhite narcissus bulbs be saved after they have been forced indoors? Paperwhite narcissus bulbs should be discarded after flowering. Paperwhites cannot be successfully forced again and are not winter hardy outdoors. To have additional questions answered, contact the ISU Hortline at 515-294-3108 or at hortline@iastate.edu. It is easy to fall into a rut with running or any other exercise you do repeatedly day after day. As you near the end of the year and look to 2016, look for ways to keep your running routine motivating and exciting. -Try doing speed intervals. Go faster for shorter bouts and then walk or jog to recover. Repeat. -Run with a friend! Research shows that you are more apt to stick to a workout routine if you use the “buddy system.” Plus, they may inspire you to run farther or faster. -Reverse your route. Many runners tend to take the same route over and over, so simply looking at the scenery from the opposite direction can help. -Hit the trails. Running off the beaten path can be a fun challenge and can also be mentally rewarding. -Set goals. Aim for a specific number or miles per week, or set a goal for year-end mileage. Keep your sights set on those numbers to stay motivated. -Register for a destination race! Making the commitment to complete anything from a 5K to a marathon in a fun location can add excitement to your routine and give you a reason to keep pressing forward. Whatever it may be, it is important to find what motivates you. Grab a friend, set some goals, and hit the trails!

change in his or her personal ďŹ nances. There is no cost for the course. “The course is designed to be used at your own pace,â€? said Wollan. “Ideally, participants would take a month or more to practice using the money management tools that are provided, even if it only takes a few hours to review the course content.â€? The course is interactive and breaks down money management into ďŹ ve key steps including goal setting, evaluating current spending, and making and following a spending plan. Each step provides one or more tools for participants to use in completing that step for themselves. The ďŹ ve steps are logically connected and it is easy to advance from one to another. It is possible, however, to jump around in the material according to individual needs and interests. “The Take Control of Your Money course is especially useful for people whose ďŹ nances are changing, who are just starting out on their own or who want to turn over a new leaf with stronger ďŹ nancial management,â€? Wollan said. “It also can help people who are having ďŹ nancial diďŹƒculties, although it is not designed to solve serious ďŹ nancial crises.â€? Special topics covered in the course include dealing with debt, building ďŹ nancial security and family communication about money. “Take Control of Your Money is practical and adaptable,â€? said Wollan. “It isn’t a strict regimen you have to follow. Rather, it’s a set of strategies and an overall philosophy you can adapt and personalize.â€? Subscriptions Evergreens for the holidays and landscape use By Ashley Sherrets Ag/Horticulture Coordinator Buchanan Co. ISU Extension

When the holidays roll around thoughts often go to glorious evergreens decked out in everything sparkly and shiny. This article, written by Richard Jauron from Iowa State University, talks about the purposes of evergreens beyond the holidays. Can I purchase an evergreen tree, use it as a Christmas tree indoors, and then plant it outside? Iowa’s harsh, winter weather, which includes extreme cold, rapid temperature changes and strong winds, makes it difficult to successfully plant an evergreen in winter. Successful efforts require proper site preparation in fall and good tree care. The planting site for the evergreen should be selected and prepared in fall. The site should provide adequate space for the tree to grow and develop. After selecting the site, dig the hole for the tree and place the soil in a location where it will not freeze. Fill the hole with straw and cover with a tarp. Select a small, container-grown or balled and burlapped tree from a local nursery or garden center. A small tree has a much better chance of survival when planted outdoors. A small tree is also less expensive and easier to handle. Store the tree in a cool garage, shed, or porch if it is purchased two to three weeks before Christmas. Make sure the soil is kept moist, but does not freeze. Place the tree in a tub or large saucer when brought indoors to prevent damage to carpets or hardwood floors. Set the tree in a cool location within the home. Avoid sites near heat sources, such as a fireplace or register. Carefully decorate with ornaments, garland, and lights. Don’t apply flocking or artificial snow to the tree. Keep the soil moist throughout the tree’s stay indoors. Check the soil daily and water as needed. The tree should be kept indoors for only a short period. The shorter the tree’s stay indoors, the better its chances of survival when planted outdoors. The maximum stay indoors should be 7-10 days. If the tree is kept indoors for a longer period, the tree’s buds may break dormancy. When planted outdoors, the succulent new growth will be destroyed by cold temperatures. Shortly after Christmas, remove the tree from the house and place it in a cool location. Don’t place the tree directly outdoors. The much colder temperatures outdoors may injure the tree. A short stay in a cool garage or porch allows the tree to become gradually acclimated to cooler temperatures. The soil should not be allowed to freeze during this period. On a mild winter day, remove the straw from the planting hole and plant the tree outdoors. Water well and mulch the area heavily to prevent the soil from immediately freezing. Which evergreen trees perform well in home landscapes in Iowa? Only a small number of evergreen trees perform well in Iowa. Some evergreens, such as Scotch pine and Austrian pine, have serious disease problems and are no longer recommended for planting in Iowa. The most reliable evergreens for Iowa are white pine, concolor (white) fir, Norway spruce, Black Hills spruce, and Colorado spruce. For more information about evergreen planting options, pruning, and general care please feel free to contact Ashley Sherrets, Ag/Hort Program Coordinator with Buchanan County ISU Extension and Outreach at sherrets@iastate.edu or 319-334-7161.

97th Iowa Farm Bureau annual meeting draws more than 1,000 members

Submitted by Iowa Farm Bureau

Members of the state’s largest grassroots farm organization gathered in Des Moines recently to mark farming and stewardship progress through the generations and showcase future leadership during the 97th annual meeting of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF). IFBF President Craig Hill called on members to honor their heritage, celebrate their success, and share their stories of stewardship and innovation. “No one can fully tell the story of agriculture better than a farmer. It is up to us! We need to tell the story instead of letting someone else define who we are and what we do. Because it truly is about our theme here this year, ‘Growing for the Greater Good;’ it means we all must be dedicated to leaving the world a better place than how we found it,” said Hill. Nine different educational seminars brought big crowds of farmers, including sessions focused on conservation ap-

proaches. When it comes to conservation and managing nutrient loss, many farmers had questions for speaker Mike Castellano, Iowa State University (ISU) agronomy professor. “Fertilizing mismanagement is not the primary cause of the nitrate loss to Iowa waterways; when soil gets warm in the spring, naturally-occurring bacteria in the soil turns nitrogen into nitrates before the crops can uptake the nutrients,” said Castellano. “Cover crops can really help but there is no magic bullet. … So, we need to invest in research to reduce nitrogen variability and losses year-round and make our field practices more effective. … It won’t happen overnight because it’s going to take time, money, training and technology.” IFBF leaders shared that farmers are coming to conservation field days in record numbers, to learn more about the conservation options that would work best for them, and

how to embrace challenges and fund solutions. Aaron Thomas delivered a stirring keynote address to IFBF members, who called on farm leaders to look upon all challenges in their lives as opportunities to develop a platform that helps them connect with others, improving lives of all. Thomas is the son of the late Aplington-Parkersburg coach, Ed Thomas, who helped the Parkersburg community recover from a tornado, but later had an untimely death at the hands of a troubled former athlete. “My father always said, ‘Life is 10% what happens to us, but 90% how we choose to react to it.’ And it’s true; anybody can lead when things are going well; it is how one deals with adversity that makes you rise above.” Thomas is a motivational speaker and the Aplington-Parkersburg High School principal and head basketball coach.

Space heater safety:

As the weather grows colder, many customers turn to space heaters for added warmth According to the Department of Energy, space heaters can save money on heating bills when they are used to heat or supplement inadequate heating in only one room. In addition, they can provide additional heat to those sensitive to the cold, commonly the elderly. While space heaters can offer comfort, and in some cases be economical, they are the culprit of more than 25,000 house fires every year in the U.S. according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Here are 10 tips to keep in mind when using space heaters: 1. Purchase a certified space heater. Buy a space heater certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. These heaters have been tested to ensure electrical components are working safely. In addition, look for a space heater with energy-saving features such as an automatic thermostat or shut-off timer. 2. Choose electric. Electric space heaters are the only unvented devices safe to use indoors. Unlike other unvented units, electric space heaters do not produce harmful gases, like carbon monoxide. 3. Have a vented space heater? Get it inspected.

sturdy, level and nonflammable surface, such as a tile or wood floor. Space heaters with a tip-over safety switch automatically shut off when knocked over – a key feature if there are have children or pets. 9. Never use propane space heaters indoors. Don’t use a portable propane space heater inside unless it’s specifically made for indoor use. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how and where to use a space heater. 10. Protect yourself with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. As a precaution, ensure there are working smoke alarms on every floor and in every bedroom of the home. Check that batteries are working in all alarms. Additionally, install a carbon monoxide detector in the home to guard against carbon monoxide poisoning. Install the detector at the height indicated on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Vented space heaters, such as wood pellet stoves, can be used indoors. They are typically placed next to a wall with a vent going to the outside. Have these heating units inspected once a year because if the unit isn’t working properly, carbon monoxide can build up inside your home. 4. Do not leave unattended. If leaving the room, turn off and unplug the space heater to avoid fire hazards. Never leave a space heater on when going to sleep. If getting drowsy, turn it off. 5. Avoid power strips and extension cords. Do not connect a space heater to a power strip or extension cord. Space heaters get hot and can cause a power strip or extension cord to overheat, which could result in a fire. 6. Keep flammable materials at a safe distance. Make sure items that can catch fire, such as furniture, rugs, pillows, bedding, curtains and clothes, are at least three feet from the heater. 7. Make a kid- and pet-safe zone. Always keep children and pets at a safe distance from space heaters. 8. Keep it on a level surface. Place the heater on a

Your year-end ďŹ nancial checklist By Nathaniel Sillin

Consider the following tasks for the year-end ďŹ nancial to-do list. Total up year-to-date spending. Whether you organize by computer or on paper, make sure your tracking system for spending, saving and investment is up to date. This way, you can make sure you are on budget for the year and ready with data for tax time. Once ďŹ nished, determine your net worth – what you own less what you owe – and get an early idea of what you need to change next year. Check in with a planner or tax professional. Late December is a busy time for ďŹ nancial professionals. Take a minute to see if they can review the numbers and make suggestions on year-end ďŹ nancial activities and new moves to make in 2016. Make sure to review all credit reports for the year. Everyone is entitled to one free copy (https://www.annualcreditreport.com) of each of your three major credit reports from TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. It’s generally wise to schedule delivery of each at dierent points in the year to catch errors or irregularities. Check and rebalance your portfolio. With the dramatic market swings this past year, be sure to check if retirement and other investments are still on track with investment goals. Get qualiďŹ ed help if necessary to see if the assets you own still ďŹ t your needs. And if you need to do any tax selling by the end of the year, now is the time to start thinking about it. Check insurance coverage. If you buy your own home, auto, life or other insurance policies, contact two or three agents representing highly rated (http://www.ambest. com) insurers to review the adequacy and pricing of coverage. If you have made any structural changes or improvements to your home, make sure those actions are reected in homeowners insurance. Such work may boost the home’s replacement value. Also, if you’ve had a major life or ďŹ nancial event like a new baby or the purchase of a new home it’s time to make sure all your coverage is suďŹƒcient. Update your W-2, beneďŹ ts and estate plan if necessary. While updating insurance and investment needs for big life events related to family, property or marital status, see if tax withholding and employee health coverage and investments need review. Get qualiďŹ ed help to make this assessment if unsure. Empty out exible spending accounts. If you have a Flexible Spending Account for health care or other qualifying expenses, it’s time to submit outstanding claims from the doctor, dentist or optometrist. Remember you can only transfer $500 in the remaining balance over to the next year. Make any appointments or medical purchases now and get the paperwork in fast. Do a last-minute tax review. If working alone or with a tax professional, review your annual income, investment and spending data to see if there’s anything to do in the ďŹ nal weeks of the year to save on taxes. If tax-deductible donations to qualiďŹ ed charities and nonproďŹ ts are recommended, consult sites such as GuideStar (http:// www.guidestar.org), CharityWatch (https://www.charitywatch.org/home) and Charity Navigator (http://www. charitynavigator.org) to evaluate your choices so ensure the contribution is being well spent. Save time and cut back on waste with online bill pay and deposits. Automatic online bill pay means you won’t have to waste time writing checks or risk late payment fees. Scheduling bill payment through a checking and savings accounts can save time and money, while setting up regular electronic deposits to savings and investment accounts can also help save money before you are tempted to spend it. Bottom line: Doing a last-minute review of ďŹ nances can potentially save money and help you save, spend and invest smarter in the coming year.
