Christmas ...

is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. If we think on these things, there will be born in us a Savior and over us will shine a star sending its gleam of hope to the world. ~ President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933)

The evolution of Christmas decorations

Christmas decorations date all the way back to the old markets in 16th century Germany. In those days, Christmas food, such as sugar rods, honey cakes, and other candy, were used as Christmas decorations. In the 18th century, many other kinds of Christmas decorations became popular. Among them were glazed paper, colored paper, and those which contain candies, nuts, cakes, raisins, and fruits. Today, many dierent kinds of Christmas decorations are known. Here are a few: Angels: As early as the mid-1880’s, using angels as Christmas decorations became widespread. Angles are associated with the Christian culture, but are also known in Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism, where angels or beings similar to angels are used as messengers. Christmas balls: As far back as three hundred years ago, glass balls were already used as Christmas decorations. Today, the big, shiny balls of thin plastic or glass are used. They were originally invented in Germany. Christmas candles: To decorate the Christmas tree with Christmas candles is a tradition that dates back to the 16th century – the time when the Christmas tree was ďŹ rst brought into a living room. The candle symbolizes life and joy in a dark time, and is perfect for Christmas. Tinsel: In 1610, tinsel was invented in Germany and was made from genuine silver. Machines that shredded silver into thin tinsel-sized strips were invented. However, since silver tinsel tarnishes and loses its shine over time, people eventually Wishing you created artiďŹ cial replacements. It must be noted that the original inventor of tinsel remains unknown. and your family In many families, Christmas decorating traditions and joy this holiday season. decorations are passed on from generation to generation.

Christmas Movie Trivia… Famous holiday movie quotes

Q: I never thought it was such a bad little tree. It’s not bad at all, really. Maybe it just needs a little love. A: Charlie Brown Christmas Q: Unless we make Christmas on occasion to share out blessings, all the snow in Alaska won’t make it white. A: White Christmas Q: First we’ll make snow angels for two hours, then we’ll go ice skating, then we’ll eat a whole roll of Tollhouse cookie dough as fast as we can and then snuggle. A: Buddy the Elf Q. I don’t know what to say except it’s Christmas and we’re all in misery. A. Christmas Vacation Q. Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings. A. It’s a Wonderful Life

The origin of the candy cane

It was not long after Europeans began using Christmas trees that special decorations were used to adorn them. Food items, such as candies and cookies, were used predominately and straight white candy sticks were one of the confections used as ornamentation. Legend has it that during the 17th century, craftsmen created the white sticks of candy in the shape of shepherds’ crooks at the suggestion of the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. The candy treats were given to children to keep them quiet during ceremonies at the living creche, or Nativity scene, and the custom of passing out the candy crooks at such ceremonies soon spread throughout Europe. According to the National Confectioner’s Association, in 1847 German immigrant August Imgard used the candy cane to decorate a Christmas tree in Wooster, Ohio. More than 50 years later, Bob McCormack of Albany, Georgia supposedly made candy canes as treats for family, friends and local shopkeepers. McCormack’s brother-in-law, Catholic priest Gregory Keller, invented a machine in the 1950s that automated the production of candy canes, thus eliminating the usual laborious process of creating the treats and the popularity of the candy cane grew. More recent explanations of the candy cane’s symbolism hold that the color white represents Christ’s purity, the red the blood he shed, and the presence of three red stripes the Holy Trinity. While factual evidence for these notions does not exist, they have become increasingly common and at times are even represented as fact. Regardless, the candy cane remains a favorite holiday treat and decoration.

Thank you

We would like to thank our family, friends, neighbors, and community for their outpouring of love and support following the death of our mom, grandma, and great grandma. We learned so many new things about her from all of you. We knew she was special to us, but it was so much fun hearing what made her special to you. We especially thank Fr. Don Plamondon for officiating and Fr. Paul McManus and Fr. Ivan Nienhaus for concelebrating the beautiful Mass. We thank Darrel Lendt and Jerry Burns for honoring Mom with a “country” send-off. She had booked them several years ago to play on this day. Special thanks to Claudia Steinke for playing the violin. Mom loved to listen to her play, but it was usually The Wabash Cannonball. We thank Sharon Bainbridge for conducting the prayer service following the wake. She just knew what to say and how to say it to bring us much needed comfort at the end of a long day. We thank the St. Patrick Guild ladies for serving the

delicious dinner prepared by McElroy’s Deli. Mom helped prepare many of those dinners over the years while working there, and we’re sure she was pleased. Finally, we thank Fawcett Funeral Home for their professional yet very personal and touching care and service. They excel at what they do! There’s nothing like a small town when it really matters! God bless you all. The family of Shirley Whitney Following is a piece written by one of Mom’s neighbors, Jill Reed Kvigne. She wrote and posted it on the day of Mom’s funeral. The nativity she refers to was a set purchased in 1968 with memorials given when our brother, Tom, died. It has been set up every year since. Parts of it were even set up last year at Prairie Hills. The stable is constructed of wood from the barn that was also part of the property. We thank Jill for this beautiful tribute to Mom and for the wonderful Christmas story it makes!

On this empty lot, a house once stood. It was a good house, a tiny house where children were raised and love was made. As a child, I trick or treated on the porch steps, played baseball in the yard, and rode on a pair of concrete horses. It was a part of my childhood; a piece of my adulthood. It was the house of my dear neighbor, Shirley. Last summer we said good-bye to that little old house, and today we said good-bye to the little old lady who called that house her home. On the day she passed,

I looked out my window to see her son and son-in-law lovingly placing her nativity in the yard where it had stood for all those years before. A symbol of a woman’s faith, a tribute to what really mattered; for it was not the house that really mattered but the way she chose to live and love that will remain. I was privileged to have been a part of her life and incredibly honored that the star that shines above the nativity in this now lonely lot was made by our business, Prospects & Possibilities. We love you dear Shirley. You will be missed!
