Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!
With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

This star drew nigh to the northwest, O’er Bethlehem it took it rest, And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay. Then entered in those wise men three Full reverently upon their knee, And offered there in his presence Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord; That hath made heaven and earth of naught, And with his blood mankind hath bought.

He’s got it! This young fellow can manage carrying his gift from Santa at the American Legion in Quasqueton. (Christine Dale Photo)
Members of the Rowley Historical Society filled in as Santa’s elves during his visit to Rowley on Dec. 7. Pictured with Santa are, seated from left, Eleanor VanTasell and Vivian Davis. Standing: Lorrie Rasmussen, Paul Rasmussen, Lisa Rasmussen, DeWayne Ossman, Dianna Ossman, Bill Davis, Joel Greenley, and Molly Greenley. (Christine Dale Photo) The legend of Santa's infamous sleigh ride was also perpetuated from a newspaper, but it wasn't done intentionally. Back in 1955, a Sears ad printed the phone number of a Colorado Springs store so children could tell Santa Claus what they wanted for Christmas. The number was a misprint and instead sent children to the hotline for Colonel Harry Shoup, Director of Operations for the US Continental Air Defense. The calls poured in and instead of blocking the number, the kindly Colonel ordered his staff to give children updates on Santa's flight coordinates. The tradition has continued to this very day on the local news, the internet and with a special "NORAD Tracks Santa" cell phone app.

The blankets are given to infants and children through age 18 who are treated in the Emergency Department or admitted to RMC. All skill levels are welcome. Children, accompanied by an adult, can take part in making blankets for this cause. Please RSVP by Friday, Dec. 26 to Pat Swanson at 563-9273395 or e-mail marcia.burkle@regmedctr.org. Monetary donations and donations of fleece in colors and prints for children and teens are welcome. Drop off at the RMC Auxiliary Gift Shop during their December holiday hours Monday-Friday 7 AM-4 PM and Saturdays 9 AM-Noon.
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) urges all Iowans over six months of age to get the yearly seasonal influenza vaccine. Surveillance by IDPH influenza sentinel sites and confirmatory testing by the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL) shows the flu is circulating in Iowa, and appears to be particularly spreading among children. “Children are known as ‘super spreaders’ because they are often in close contact with others at schools or daycare, and when ill, can quickly spread the illness to others,” said IDPH Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. Testing for viral strains by SHL shows three flu viruses – A(H3N2), A(H1N1) and B – are already currently circulating in Iowa with A(H3N2) predominating. In years when A(H3N2) viruses dominate, the flu season tends to be more severe with more hospitalizations and deaths. All three of these flu strains are covered by this year’s vac-

cine, although some of the A(H3N2) viruses may only be partially covered in the vaccine. Anti-viral medications are an important second line of defense to treat the flu. There are two anti-viral medications a doctor can prescribe that make flu illness milder, shorter, and reduce the risk of ending up in the hospital or dying from influenza. Antivirals work best if started within 48 hours or sooner of when flu symptoms begin. While the flu vaccine is the best defense against getting influenza, it’s also important to help prevent the spread of illness. Remember the 3Cs: Cover coughs and sneezes; Clean hands frequently; and Contain germs by staying home when ill. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by viruses. The flu comes on suddenly and symptoms may include fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and body aches. Illness typically lasts two to seven days. Influenza may cause severe illness or even death in people such as the very young or very old, or those who have underlying health conditions. (The “stomach bug,” which causes diarrhea and vomiting is not caused by the influenza virus but usually by norovirus; thus, the flu vaccine will not protect against this illness.) Influenza is not a “reportable disease” in Iowa, which means doctors are not required to notify IDPH each time a patient tests positive for influenza; however, IDPH conducts yearround influenza surveillance through the Iowa Influenza Surveillance Network. This surveillance indicates what types of influenza viruses are circulating and how widespread influenza illness is. For information about where and what kind of influenza is in Iowa, go to www.idph.state.ia.us/Cade/Influenza. aspx?pg=FluHome. Contact a health care provider or local health department to find out where the vaccine is available or use the Flu Vaccine Finder at www.flu.gov/.

Resolution Time is Near
New Year’s resolution time is near! If you are like many Americans, improving fitness and losing weight is on your agenda once again this year. Here are a few helpful and healthful tips to keep you on track if improved health is your goal for 2015. •Water! Water! Water! If you do not have constant access to a drinking fountain or faucet, carry a water bottle with you. •Be physically active for 30-60 minutes on most or all days of the week. •Switch it up. Vary your workouts by introducing new forms of exercise. Not only will you avoid boredom but you will also see greater results! •Don’t let food sabotage your efforts if you are exercising for weight loss. Remember that it all boils down to “calories in versus calories out.” If you burned off 300 calories in your last workout but then downed a greasy cheeseburger shortly thereafter, you made no progress in your overall weight loss efforts. •View your exercise time as “me” time, not as a burden or chore. Look forward to your workouts and you will be more apt to stay on board. •Get your Zzzz’s. Aim for 8 hours every night. It will help you rejuvenate for your next session. •Set yourself up for success. Invest in a good pair of workout shoes and appropriate attire, and find yourself a music player if it will help keep you revved up. •Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption. Water is your body’s best friend when it comes to beverage choices. •Do not compare yourself to others and fret over how much better they look than you, or think about how far you have to go to get to where they are already at. Instead, focus on your goals and work to be your best! Buchanan County Health Center 319 – 332 – 0850

Emergency services are among the most critical offerings for any community hospital. Chest pains, fractures, lacerations, car accidents, head trauma, dizziness, vomiting, unresponsiveness or trouble breathing - real emergencies like these come into the BCHC Emergency Department every day. To best respond to these emergencies, BCHC formed a new partnership with East Central Iowa Acute Care (E.C.I.A.C.), which fully staffs the emergency services at St. Luke’s in Cedar Rapids, and provides partial staffing for Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, and Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa. This new group brings a huge amount of emergency care expertise, and we hope to see a larger number Kelly Bose, RN, Bonnie Corkery, RN, and Kelly Clement, RN, are among the experienced care providers at BCHC. Emergency Department nurses are all extenof local people stay in town and sively trained and have taken several advanced certifications such as Advanced allow BCHC to be their “Hospital of Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC). These advanced certificates are renewed Choice” as a result. every 2 and 4 years.
ECIAC goals in serving Emergency patients are: 1. To provide rapid and high quality care to our patients in the Emergency Department. 2. Work with local primary care providers to increase the number of people who can stay in Independence for care. Ultimately, fewer patients will need to be transferred making recovery and follow-up care more convenient for them and their families. 3. Recovering from bankruptcy
By Roxanne Fuller Executive Director, Buchanan Co. ISU Extension
I know this is the wrong time of year to bring this up but this is also the time of year that we take a look at our finances to see what we have to spend for the holidays. And if you need to file for bankruptcy it can feel like you are bombarded with information you really don’t know what to do with. There are also companies out there you may be referred to that you are not quite sure about. That is where we come in. Individuals filing for personal bankruptcy can turn to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach for the education that is required during the bankruptcy process. “Financial Success: Recovery after Bankruptcy“ is available through the national Extension website, www.extension.org, at a cost of $20 per person. As a result of the 2005 Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act, anyone filing for personal bankruptcy is required to participate in a two-hour educational workshop before the bankruptcy is discharged. The online workshop is designed to help participants strengthen their financial management skills to prevent future problems. “While dealing with bankruptcy may build awareness and motivation to take control of your finances, the skills, tools and strategies for being in control do not appear out of nowhere,” said Jan Monahan, an ISU Extension and Outreach family finance specialist. “The online workshop covers skills and tools for planning and controlling spending, for finding money to save for emergencies and specific goals, and for monitoring and controlling debt. These skills improve a family’s ability to maintain stability and get ahead, despite the financial challenges that every family faces occasionally,” Monahan said. To access this online workshop, go to www.extension. org and type “debtor education” in the search box, or go di-
rectly towww.extension.org/ pages/67265/financial-securityfor-all-debtor-education. The course is available 24/7, and certificates of completion are emailed to participants the next business day after they complete the course. Monahan noted that www.extension.org offers a wide variety of financial education and information. The $20 fee for the online workshop can be waived in cases of financial hardship, Monahan said, if household income is below 200% of the federal poverty level or if the bankruptcy case is being handled pro bono by an attorney. To find information about all approved providers of workshops that meet the educational requirements outlined in the bankruptcy law, go to the U.S. Trustee Program website, www. justice.gov/ust/eo/bapcpa/ccde/de_approved.htm.
