Nile White: In my future, I want to weld in the oil fields and be a livestock hauler. I also want to work in diesel mechanics and make improvements to machinery.

Taniesha Goedken: As I have grown up on a dairy farm, I found the love and really enjoyed working on the farm. I loved helping out the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health to keep them alive and seeing the cows healthy. I want to future in a career about either animal science or veterinary science.

Markia Griffin: Living on a farm I was always interested in seeing what type of feed needed to be made for the pigs and cows. I think that going into the feed nutritionist would be very interesting because the feeds and supplies are always changing. I would love to be able to travel around to different farms and check to see what they are using and maybe have my own feed plan for farmers.

Jared Kelly: I want to own and operate my own farm, and provide and care for my livestock and contribute to my community.

Holly Cook: In the future, I plan to attend Iowa State University to major in an agricultural field, followed attendance to law school. Upon graduating I plan to pursue a career in ag law where I will defend and protect modern agriculture practices and agriculturists.

Griffin Cabalka: I would like to stay farming corn and soybeans in Iowa. I also want to learn more about conservation, and how the farmer can help the environment.

Producers care about the environment

*Careful stewardship by farmers has spurred a nearly 50 percent decline in erosion of cropland by wind and water since 1982. *Conservation tillage, a way of farming that reduces erosion (soil loss) on cropland while using less energy, has grown from 17 percent of acreage in 1982 to 63 percent today. At the same time, total land used for crops declined by 15 percent (70 million acres). *Farmers have enrolled a total of 31 million acres in the Conservation Reserve Program to protect the environment and provide habitat for wildlife. Since its inception in 1985, the program has helped reduce soil erosion by 622 million tons and restored more than 2 million acres of wetlands. *Farmers, ranchers and other landowners have installed more than 2 million miles of conservation buffers under farm bill initiatives. Buffers improve soil, air and water quality; enhance wildlife habitat; and create scenic landscapes. *Each year, hundreds of thousands of trees are planted on farmland. *More than half of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farmers intentionally provide habitat for wildlife. Deer, moose, fowl and other species have shown significant population increases for decades. *Crop rotation, the practice of growing different crops in succession on the same land, is another way farmers take care of the land. *For contour farming, farmers plant crops across the slope of the land to conserve water and protect soil. *Alternative energy sources, including wind power and renewable fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel (made from corn, soybeans and other crops) are beneficial to the environment and promote energy security.

ISU Scientists identify a seed treatment to curtail Soybean Sudden Death Syndrome Researchers at Iowa State University are leading a regional research project to identify farm management practices that help reduce Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) in soybeans.

SDS is caused by a fungus that can destroy a small patch to an entire field of soybeans. Since its appearance 40 years ago, it has spread to most soybean-growing area in the United States and Ontario, Canada, and continues to move into new areas.

“In Iowa and the rest of the Midwest, SDS is emerging as the number two soybean disease after soybean cyst nematode, in terms of yield loss,” said Daren Mueller, assistant professor of plant pathology and microbiology at Iowa State and the principal investigator for the three-year regional research project, which began in 2013.

The project is partially supported by soybean checkoff funds through the North Central Soybean Research Program (NCSRP). Grant partners include Iowa State, University of Illinois, Michigan State University and Purdue University. The project includes researchers in Canada who are supported by the Grain Farmers of Ontario-Ontario Farm Innovation Program, a component of Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

The most widely used farm management strategy for lowering the risk of soybean SDS is to select

plant varieties that have demonstrated resistance to the disease. But, as SDS continues to be a problem, farmers want more additional strategies, said Mueller.

Project objectives include determining if earlier or later plantings reduce the risk of SDS, studying the relationship between soybean cyst nematode resistance and SDS resistance, and assessing the effectiveness of new products, such as seed treatments and herbicides.

Researchers at Iowa State and the other land grant universities have been collaborating to study SDS for more than 10 years, with the support of the NCSRP. Leonor Leandro, associate professor of plant pathology and microbiology at Iowa State and co-principal investigator for the SDS management study, led the biological research that identified a DNA test that measures how much SDS pathogen is in the roots of a plant and in the soil.

Mueller says this biological research was foundational to being able to test management practices.

“If researchers didn’t have tools like this, we wouldn’t know what management practices we are testing are working,” Mueller said.

Other biological research included studying when infection takes place and if susceptibility to the fungus lessens as the plants get older.

“What we found is that the later the fungus infects the seedlings, the more resistance the plants had to SDS. That’s why we thought a seed treatment would be an effective solution. But we just didn’t see any products that were effective until recently,” said Leandro.

Leandro was referring to ILeVO, a seed treatment which Bayer CropScience asked to have included in all tests being conducted by the project universities.

Bayer provided the seed treatment and the funds needed to double all of the experiments.

“Farmers are going to benefit because we have been able to identify a seed treatment that we now know works. Learning how it works, how it kills the fungus and what management practices will work — all of this knowledge is because of soybean research checkoff investment in the university system,” Mueller said.

Bayer CropScience has announced that the seed treatment, ILeVO, will be available for the 2015 growing season. Mueller says other products have since become available which they will include in future tests.

USDA provides one-time extension of deadline to update base acres or yield history A one-time extension will be provided to producers for the new safety-net programs established by the 2014 Farm Bill, known as Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC). Final day to update yield history or reallocate base acres has been extended one additional month, to March 31. The final day for farm owners and producers to choose ARC or PLC coverage also remains March 31. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These programs provide financial protection against unexpected changes in the marketplace. Producers are working to

make the best decision they can. And weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working to ensure that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got the time, the information, and the opportunities to have those final conversations, review their data, and to visit the Farm Service Agency to make those decisions,â&#x20AC;? said Ag Secretary Vilsack.

If no changes are made to yield history or base acres by March 31, the farmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current yield and base will be used. A program choice of ARC or PLC coverage also must be made by March 31, or there will be no 2014 payments for the farm and the farm

will default to PLC coverage through the 2018 crop year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re providing a one-time extension of an additional month so that every producer is fully prepared to enroll in this program,â&#x20AC;? said Vilsack.

Nationwide, more than 2.9 million educational postcards, in English and Spanish, have been sent to producers, and over 4,100 training sessions have been conducted on the new safetynet programs. The online tools, available at www.fsa.usda.gov/ arc-plc, allow producers to explore projections on how ARC or PLC coverage will affect their operation under possible future scenarios.

Covered commodities include barley, canola, large and small chickpeas, corn, crambe, flaxseed, grain sorghum, lentils, mustard seed, oats, peanuts, dry peas, rapeseed, long grain rice, medium grain rice (which includes short grain rice), safflower seed, sesame, soybeans, sunflower seed and wheat.

Upland cotton is no longer a covered commodity.

Iowa Beef Producers see value and stability on Trade Mission to Japan The largest importer of U.S. beef told Iowa producers that they expect reliable access to a steady supply of high quality U.S. beef. The issue came up at every importer meeting held during a recent Iowa Meat Trade Mission to Japan.

Iowa beef producers Steve Rehder, Hawarden, and Connie Richards, Tingley, were on the mission, Feb. 14-20.

“During our schedule, we met with the high level executives of the four major Japanese meat companies and they all expressed interest in continuing to buy U.S. beef, even as the questions of price became part of the discussion,” said Rehder. “The question of reliable access to supply was prompted by the slowdown at West Coast ports. Each company literally led off asking questions about the port dispute that was limiting the U.S.’s ability to export chilled beef into Japan’s value added market.”

(A port agreement was reached shortly after the Iowans returned to the U.S.

However, the extent of the slowdown has put shipping issues from those ports at least six weeks behind schedule.)

While the price of beef is challenging as the U.S. rebuilds its cow herd, U.S. beef has continually displaced Australian beef, which is the main competitor in Japan in recent years.

“The Japanese business leaders that we met focused their discussions on the relationship we have maintained with them over several decades,” Richards said. “While we build more import opportunities by increasing our inventory at home, maintaining and strengthening our relationships will continue to be the means by which U.S. beef remains a significant consumer option in Japan.”

Japan continues to remain on top of the U.S. beef export list in both volume and value. The U.S. has continually captured additional market share there by exporting 183% of the volume exported just five years ago. Besides displacing the Australian product, beef consumption in the Japanese

market is up 1.6% over the last five years.

“If we can maintain uninterrupted supply of U.S. beef to the Japanese market while reducing import tariffs through a successful Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, it will be a win-win situation,” said Matt Deppe with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. “It will grow market opportunities for the U.S. producer and establish even better price points for the Japanese consumer.”

During the mission, representatives from the U.S. Meat Export Federation outlined several consumer promotion events at various retail outlets for U.S. beef. These events are partially funded by the beef checkoff.

“It was interesting to me that while the Japanese consumer is very quality and price conscious, there’s a very strong interest by the older population as well as young families to purchase leaner cuts,” said Richards. “This trend is similar to what we’ve seen in the U.S. in the past decade and a demand we can certainly fulfill without sacrificing quality.”

“It was great to see how our Beef Checkoff investment in the U.S. Meat Export Federation opens up our opportunities even when we’re at home producing the product,” said Rehder. “U.S. beef exports to Japan alone added $66.45 to the value of a fed steer this past year. That’s a strong return on investment in my book any day.”

Rehder and Richards represent different areas of the beef checkoff program. Rehder is a cattle feeder from northwest Iowa, while Richards and her family have both a cow-calf operation and a small feedlot in southwest Iowa. Both serve as directors on the Iowa Beef Industry Council and were part of an Iowa trade team that included representatives from the Iowa Economic Development Authority, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, the Iowa Pork Producers Association, and the U.S. Meat Export Federation. Partial funding for the trade mission was provided by the $1-perhead beef checkoff.

Five years after setting an aggressive goal of 10% growth in real per capita consumer expenditures for pork, the National Pork Board announced it met that goal with total consumer expenditures growing 15.7 percent since 2009. Pork expenditures – the product of total pork volume available in the U.S. multiplied by the average U.S. Department of Agriculture retail pork price – grew by 7.6% from the previous year.

“2014 was a fantastic year of growth for the pork industry.

Overall, there was less pork to sell due to the impact of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED), a production virus. So growth in the second half of the year came largely from higher pork prices,” said Dale Norton, president of National Pork Board. “Pork expenditures directly correlate to consumer demand. Despite record high prices, demand grew and was even higher than expected.”

The inventory of both breeding herds and the stock of pigs bound for market increased. As of year-end 2014, total U.S. pig inventory increased 2% to 66.1 million head over 2013, marking a solid rebound.

Norton said. “Barring any recurrence of PED, we should see more pork enter the market in the second half of 2015.”

This may require adjusting the Pork Checkoff's marketing plan to balance any potential increase in product hitting the consumer market. An influx supply of pork could lower consumer prices at the meat counter, but likewise may lower producer revenue.

“The last two years have been outstanding for pork demand,” said Steve Meyer, president of Paragon Economics and a Pork Checkoff consultant. “We haven't moved demand upward by this magnitude since the 1990s.” Meyer attributed the growth to the National Pork Board's focus to capitalize on food trends such as the rise of foodies and a growing passion for protein.

In 2014, the National Pork Board centered its consumer messaging on pork's inspiration as a menu item and for creative home meals. Marketing of pork directly reached consumers, as well as engaged foodservice and retail decision-makers.

“The pork expenditure results offer solid insight into what we view as a consistently growing consumer demand for pork,” said Ceci Snyder, vice president of domestic marketing for the Pork Checkoff. “Despite record-high pork prices, demand for pork has increased. As we head into a year of higher supplies, we need to constantly remind consumers of pork's unique combination of flavor and versatility.”

Eastern Iowa Hay Producers Association Annual Conference

Area hay and forage producers are invited to attend the 32nd Annual Eastern Iowa Hay Producers Association (EIHPA) Annual Meeting and Conference March 19 at Buzzyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Welton.

Registration will begin at 10 AM; program at 10:30 AM. The conference will focus on forage rotation and cover crops.

Dr. Matt Liebman, Iowa State University (ISU) professor of agronomy, will discuss forages as part of crop rotation. His research focuses on diversified cropping systems, weed ecology and management. His studies also include use of native perennial species for soil and water conservation and biofuel production, including crop rotations, cover crops, green manures, intercrops, reconstructed prairies, conservation strips and more.

Agronomist Mark Carlton will discuss cover crops as a forage, followed by a panel of producers using cover crops as a forage source for their livestock. A brief annual meeting to elect officers and directors, regional updates and topics including information on the newly released low lignin alfalfa, and concerns about molds and mycotoxins in corn stover.

Registration fee includes a membership to EIHPA and meal.

Tickets can be purchased at the door. Certified crop advisor credits have been applied for. This conference is sponsored by EIHPA, Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, and the Iowa Beef Center.

Operation Threshold still taking applications for energy assistance

Since Operation Threshold began taking applications for this seasons Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on Nov. 1, over 4,600 households have applied for assistance.

There is still time to apply as LIHEAP applications will be accepted through April 30. The program is funded by the Department of Health and Human Rights and was established to help qualifying low-income homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs. In addition, those who qualify for LIHEAP are also protected by the moratorium, which prevents utility companies from disconnecting utilities from Nov. 1-April 1.

Applicants need to furnish a form of identification, a copy of their most recent heating and electric bill, and proof of all household membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gross income for one month, the past three months, or for the past calendar year. Applicants also have to provide proof of their Social Security Number and documentation for every member of the household (if not already on file).

Applications are processed on a first-come-first-served basis. It is important for applicants to apply as early as possible.

Households may receive assistance once per season. Households already approved for assistance for the 2014-15 will not be able to apply again until next season.

Volunteer precipitation observers invited to join CoCoRaHS

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s State Climatology Office and the National Weather Service are recruiting volunteer precipitation observers across Iowa to participate in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network, known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;CoCoRaHS. All that is needed to participate is an interest in the weather, a four-inch-diameter rain gauge, a suitable location to set up the gauge and access to the internet. All data collected is immediately available for free online and is routinely used for flood forecasting, drought assessment, scientific research and more.

Information about the network is available on the CoCoRaHS web site at www.cocorahs.org. The website includes information on how to join, where to purchase a rain gauge and how to accurately measure and report rain and snow.

The network was established by the Colorado Climate Center in 1998 and has now spread to all 50 states and Canada. Iowa joined this volunteer network in 2007 and now has over 300 registered CoCoRaHS observers across the state. However, more observers are needed to better document the amount and variability of rain and snow across Iowa. The need for additional observers is particularly critical in 17 following counties, including Delaware County. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In 2014 Iowa experienced a mostly wet year with record flooding in far northwest Iowa in June along with record high annual precipitation totals set at Denison and Greenfield, allowing current soil moisture levels to be the highest they have been for this time of year since 2011,â&#x20AC;? said Harry Hillaker, state climatologist for Iowa. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatever comes our way in 2015, the weather observations obtained by this network can be of great benefit in obtaining a clearer picture of Iowaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weather.â&#x20AC;?

Suitcases For Success donation drive

Grants available to share America’s agricultural story

Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) announces $50,000 is available through the 2015 General Grant Program, which funds agricultural-related interpretive projects in the Heritage Area, including exhibit development, educational programs, interpretive signage, marketing and event programming.

In an effort to expand the agricultural story in the Heritage Area, this year greater consideration will be given to projects and programming that incorporate interpretation of the modern ag story.

AmeriCorps Partnering to Protect Children and Building Direction for Families are joining to hold a donation drive, Suitcases for Success, for 20 youth aging out of foster care this year in Buchanan, Fayette and Delaware counties. Unlike most youth making the transition to adulthood, these kids do not have a support system typically provided by family. Suitcases for Success hopes to equip youth with items needed to successfully make this transition.

This donation drive looks to provide transitional items, such as new rolling duffel bags, suitcases, and personal hygiene products along with new or like-new bedding, towels, and kitchen items.

Suitcases for Success will accept in-kind or monetary donations that are tax-deductible starting now until May 1. Drop-off locations include Building Direction for Families in Independence, Parent Share and Support in Oelwein, and Operation: New View Community Action Agency in Manchester.
