Early childhood cavities significant health problem

The American Dental Association recognizes that early childhood cavities are a significant public health problem. In fact, tooth decay is still recognized as the most common chronic disease affecting children in the United States. Fortunately, parents can help their children avoid dental issues like cavities by establishing healthy routines early. See the Expert * Speak to your pediatrician about when to schedule baby's first dental visit. A good rule of thumb is to schedule a visit by their first birthday with regular visits every six months. Lead by Example * Set a good example and let your kids learn by watching and imitating you as you brush, rinse and floss. Mirror Mirror * Encourage your kids to brush in front of a mirror; it will help them see spots they may otherwise miss. * To help keep track of their oral care routine enlist the help of a brushing chart to record each time your child brushes. Offer Choices * Have plenty of oral care supplies on hand for your kids in the flavors and designs they'll be excited to use to encourage proper oral hygiene.

Thirty minutes of vigorous exercise each day can maintain health and weight. Those who need to lose weight should strive for 60-90 minutes a day. Add strength training three times a week for optimal health benefits.

A fair-skinned person can develop sunburn within 15 minutes of exposure. Symptoms of sunburn appear within a few hours and can be painful and blisters may develop. In severe cases, sunburns may even be accompanied by headache, chills, nausea, fever and shock. Individuals suffering from these symptoms should see a physician right away. Sunburns may occur at any time, even on cloudy days. There are many other factors that can increase the risk of sunburn, including altitude and wind. Individuals should protect themselves from the sun's rays whenever outdoors. Anyone who has a prior skin injury or recent exposure is more susceptible to sunburn. Repeated sunburns can damage the skin, resulting in brown spots, sagging and wrinkling. They can also cause skin cancer in the affected area, while repeated blistering sunburns can increase the risk of malignant melanoma, a serious type of skin cancer. Stay protected at all times when outdoors, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 that protects from both UVA and UVB rays and wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirt and pants, wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. The American Cancer Society has also recently developed standards for sun protective clothing.

Adjust your health with chiropractic care

Join the millions of Americans who have not only found relief from back pain, but also a pathway to wellness with chiropractic's natural, drug-free approach to healthcare. Your spinal column, made up of 24 independent vertebrae, allows your body to move through every motion. It also encases and helps protect the delicate central nervous system that controls and coordinates every muscle, tissue and organ of the body. Two or more vertebrae not functioning together properly is what chiropractors refer to as a subluxation or a misalignment. These subluxations are actually joint dysfunctions that can cause discomfort, decreased mobility, or many other symptoms and conditions. Joint dysfunctions often go unnoticed and can cause miscommunication between your brain and body. Joint Dysfunctions in the spine may eventually lead to symptoms in other parts or joints of the body as well. These symptoms are your body’s only way of letting you know something is wrong. Unfortunately, the absence of pain is not an indication of health. By the time pain and symptoms appear the problem may have been present for months, even years. Help prevent these types of symptoms and conditions with routine chiropractic care. Licensed chiropractors promote ongoing wellness by improving spinal and joint function often resulting in a healthier, more active lifestyle. With regular adjustments, chiropractic offers a host of preventative health benefits, and is vital for keeping your body balanced, flexible and functioning at its best.

Vaccines play critical role in keeping both children and adults healthy

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), routine vaccination of the nearly 4 million babies born in the US each year helps to prevent about 20 million cases of diseases that they could develop over their lifetime. In fact, over time, successful vaccination campaigns have contributed to the elimination or near-elimination of some diseases in the U.S., like polio. Vaccination is considered to be one of the greatest public health achievements of the last two centuries. Today vaccines can help to protect against 14 diseases before age two. Currently, rates of some diseases are increasing and could continue to do so if vaccination rates decrease. Failure to vaccinate could mean putting your own children at risk for serious diseases. It is also important to know that vaccines are not just recommended for infants. Vaccination is important in helping maintain health and wellness across a lifetime. Some potentially serious diseases can make even strong and healthy people sick, and vaccines are recommended for people of all ages. In the U.S., most young children receive many of the recommended vaccines, but there is room to improve vaccination rates among all groups, including adolescents and adults. The CDC has specific recommended vaccination schedules that cover children, adolescents and adults. Talk to your healthcare provider about vaccines that may be recommended for you and your loved ones.

Prevent and treat tick bites

Ticks are everywhere in Iowa - and they are spreading disease. In fact, an estimated 300,000 Americans are infected with Lyme disease each year, according to estimates from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as other types of diseases. Tickborne illness is the fastest-growing infectious disease concern in the U.S. It is important to take preventive steps and know what to do if a tick bite occurs. -Tuck pant legs into socks to prevent ticks from reaching your skin. Ticks do not fly or jump from trees; they are on the ground and crawl upward. - During high tick season, May to November, treat your clothes with tick repellant. Look for clothing-only sprays with permethrin to kill ticks on contact. - Because it is best to remove ticks before they attach, it is important to check for them daily. Keep in mind that ticks like constricted places, so be sure to check all over and focus on underarms, under the knees and around waistbands. - Ask your vet about proper vaccination and treatment for pets. If you find a tick has attached to you, a family member or your pet, prompt and proper removal is the key to reducing the risk of being infected with Lyme disease or other tick-borne illnesses. Quick action can make a big difference. For the majority of tick-borne diseases, you have 24 hours to find and remove an attached tick before it transmits an infection. After removing the tick from a person or pet, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, or soap and water. If fever or rash develops within several weeks of removing the tick, visit a doctor.

Spring clean your health

Simple changes in the Spring, such as resetting your sleep pattern, updating oral care routine and refreshing your diet can result in big changes to overall well-being. Get moving outside: Spring is a great time to be outdoors, so try daily walks outside to reduce stress and lower risk of heart disease and hypertension. Get creative and use apps to track and challenge your friends to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Reset sleep pattern: With the arrival of spring come longer days and more daylight. Beat fatigue by setting a goal to keep your waking and bed time consistent - even on weekends. This will help avoid mid-day burn outs while keeping your body in sync with its natural rhythms. Think about your gum health: Most people do not realize that proper oral hygiene can be a good step toward helping to improve their overall health. In addition to brushing your teeth, make sure to take good care of your gums they are the foundation of a healthy mouth. Travel healthy and be prepared: As you begin to make plans for spring and summer travel, be sure to schedule your family doctor and dentist appointments and address any issues before your trip. Compile a list of medications, unique health issues or history, and physician contact information. This will be important and save time if you end up needing healthcare while you are away. Refresh your diet: Simple changes to your diet can bring more sustained energy and knock off a few pounds.

How do your supplements stack up?

Spring into ... Health & Wellness!

When looking for supplements, keep these tips in mind: Read the label - Nutrient forms can vary dramatically from product to another. The nutrient form determines the price of a product, and influences whether that nutrient will be absorbed or not. Look for methylcobalamin over cyancobalamin, natural folate (5-methyl-tetra-hydro-folate) over folic acid, and mineral bisglycinates over cheaper carbonate and oxide forms. Know your needs - Each body functions differently and has different supplemental needs. Visit a dietitian who can help determine your individual needs. Look for certification Certifications to look for include: Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CMPG), Therapeutic Goods of Australia (TGA), National Science Foundation (NSF) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP). For fish oil, look for International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS). Be wary of over-promises - If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is when it comes to supplements promoting weightloss miracles. Supplements are designed to enhance missing nutrients from a daily diet that the body needs.

The News & The Guide

Ten tips to a healthier diet

1. Balance calories. Go to www.ChooseMyPlate.gov for guidelines on your calorie needs. 2. Enjoy food, but eat less. Don’t eat too fast, or eat in front of the TV or while reading. Pay attention to fullness cues before, during, and after eating. 3. Avoid oversized portions! Use a smaller plate, share a dish at restaurants and take home part of your meal. 4. Eat these foods more often: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free dairy. 5. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables, concentrating on red, orange and dark green vegetables. Eat fruit for dessert. 6. Switch to low-fat or fat-free milk to get the same amount of calcium, but fewer calories and fat. 7. Cut back on foods with saturated (solid) fats, sugars, and salt. Save cakes, ice cream, and other desserts for special occasions. Avoid processed and fatty meats like hot dogs, sausage and bacon. 8. Eat more whole grains including oatmeal, whole grain breads, and brown rice. 9. Read the labels! Choose lower sodium foods. 10. Choose water instead of soda, sports drinks, and fruit juice.

Enjoying Exercise

Getting motivated to exercise can be tough. Some people thoroughly enjoy sweating and pushing themselves the extra mile. Others, however, would rather hit the snooze button a few extra times. Most exercise programs fail due to a lack of motivation or a lack of enjoyment. Motivation is something that needs to come from within, but enjoyment can be easily accomplished. The “I hate to exercise” statement probably stems from the thought of spending countless hours on a treadmill or stair stepper. If you are not an exercise enthusiast who may actually like doing those things, the key is finding something you enjoy doing and will stick with. Fitness and weight loss can be achieved in many different ways. There is no “cookie cutter” workout that is the best for everyone. If you are a social person, try the camaraderie of an aerobics or kick-boxing class. If group fitness isn’t your thing, try engaging in a sport such as baseball or basketball. Other calorie-burning options include walking, biking and swimming. These activities are great because you can do them solo or with a friend. You may even find that you look forward to this activity in your day as a stress reliever or simple break, and not as a hindrance. The possibilities for burning calories and still having a good time are endless, so get motivated and get fit! Not only will you begin to enjoy exercise, you will also begin to enjoy the benefits your body receives as a result!

Over 8% of the U.S. population has diabetes, 7 million are still undiagnosed and 79 million have pre-diabetes. Go to www.diabetes.org for more information.

Nothing to sneeze at: Tips for seasonal allergy relief

The key to surviving spring allergies is knowing what triggers symptoms. Because there can be millions of pollen particles in the air, finding allergy relief can seem nearly impossible for some. Here are tips to find relief and enjoy spring. - Research shows that when synthetic fabrics rub against one another, they create an electrical charge that attracts pollen is also electrically charged. Natural fibers such as cotton also breathe better, so they stay drier and less hospitable to moisture-loving mold. - Exercising causes you to breathe more deeply and inhale the pollen that affects your allergy symptoms. If planning a vigorous workout, stay indoors! If planning on taking walk outdoors, take a non-drowsy antihistamine before you go. Exercise outdoors when pollen counts are at their lowest - before dawn and in the late afternoon or early evening. - Take an antihistamine about half an hour before heading outside to work in the garden. You should also wear gloves and a NIOSH-rated 95 filter mask if your tasks including digging in the dirt, which can stir up pollen. Avoid touching eyes, and wash hands, hair and clothing once back indoors. - Over the counter intranasal steroids (nasal sprays) as well as non-drowsy antihistamines and decongestants can be beneficial for those suffering from mild allergies. However, people suffering from more severe allergies will benefit from seeing an allergist. - Vacuum furniture, leave shoes by the door, shower frequently, cover floors with washable rugs and use a dehumidifier to limit mold exposure.

Health and fitness ideas for summer

Go outdoors - Ride bikes, run around and play tag with your kids, or play fetch with the dog. Include fitness in your social activities. For instance, go for a long walk before or after lunch with friends. Include light foods - Light foods pair well with warmer weather. Consider growing your own vegetables, or visit local farmers markets for fresh, seasonal food. Incorporate water-based fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew and pineapple into meals. For dessert, freeze grapes, cherries, or blueberries for a sweet treat. Stay hydrated -Stock the fridge with a big pitcher of cold water with slices of strawberries, cucumbers and lime. This low-calorie drink quenches on even the hottest days. Get outside early - Get fresh air first thing in the morning to stay energized all day long. Take a quick walk or practice yoga outside, when it is cooler. Burn calories outdoors – Gardening and yard work are great ways to enjoy the weather while burning calories. Try new activities - Take tennis or golf lessons, or meet friends on a weekly basis to play a different sport. Don’t forget the sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

Drink more water throughout the day

The Institute of Medicine recommends men consume about 13 cups of fluid a day and women take in about 9 cups. Here are some tips to naturally incorporate drinking liquids into your day. *Always have a reusable water bottle with you. Tuck it into your purse or gym bag and have an extra one at your desk. *Make sure your water is freshly filtered. Water refrigerator filters should be National Science Foundation certified to reduce more contaminants than comparable refrigerator filters, ensuring you are drinking the quality water. *Add fun flavors to water to change it up. Cut up oranges, lemons, grapes and other berries and immerse them in water for a fruity drink. Purchase some travel flavor packets to add to your cup. Like tea? It is a great way to flavor your water, and it provides health benefits.

THANK YOU!

THANK YOU

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shown amazing support for our family during this difďŹ cult time, passing of our mother, Betty Hunziker. We would like to thank Cedar Valley Hospice girls for months of care at the house and hospital, nurses, Dr. Jasper, Chaplin Ginny Bass, Rita Hickey (for many meals brought to the hospital for our family), and Reiff’s Funeral Home. Thank you does not seem like enough for all the food, cards, owers, and support shown to our family during this difďŹ cult time.

THANK YOU

Thank you to everyone who came to eat, donated supplies, chopped vegetables and helped cook for the omelet breakfast fundraiser for Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association, Trick’s Ride and Winthrop C & C Club. Without all of you our event would not be such a great success. Thank you to After Hours for hosting our event. Our next breakfast will be held in fall, along with the silent auction.

God is so good and has blessed me with a loving family (who traveled across the United States) and friends, new and old that I have not seen in 27 years, but they were here! “THE BIGGEST SALES EVENT in our 75-year history is ending! The window of opportunity will close very soon. The selection is still good, but it is going fast! Connie and I have slashed prices and are scaling down our furniture business. Even custom orders will be generously discounted. But let me assure our friends and neighbors that we are NOT going out of business. We are conducting this Sellout ourselves with our regular staff. So, you will enjoy the same sense of fairness and consideration that you have come to expect from Fawcett’s Furniture.” “I urge you to come see, if only to say hello. As always, we look forward to serving you!”
