etters from the Great War

A series by Christine Dale Assistant Editor

“You can give Gray this letter if you want to.” One thread helping tie at least a few of these letters together is Jesse Naylor Gray. At age 45, he filled out a draft registration form on Sept. 12, 1918, that was signed by S.T. Spangler. It noted Gray was of medium height, had

brown eyes and gray hair and was self-employed as a newspaper publisher in Winthrop. Long before digital social media and even telephones, newspapers were a way to share information with extended friends and family. From the packet of letters received at THE NEWS office in late April, it is apparent that soldiers and loved ones back

home wanted to let the community know how things were going from camp and the front. It was everyone’s war and the local men who served were the community’s boys. To keep everyone posted, letters were sent to Gray to be printed in the paper. Read more local letters from WWI in THE NEWS this week!

American Trotter Trail open to all Info/Photo submitted by Fusion Forward Grow One! Growing a garden has more benefits than just reaping the produce. Gardening can be great for your physical health, mental health, and the environment! FRESH PRODUCE: The obvious reason one would plant a garden would be for the fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s hard to beat food that is fresh, tastes great, and is great for you! PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Gardening takes work! It requires physical effort that involves lifting, bending, pulling, etc. You can burn hundreds of calories per hour by simply tending to your garden. MENTAL HEALTH: Gardening allows you the opportunity to step outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. By doing so, it often acts as a stress reliever giving you a mental break from your daily grind.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS: Growing your own garden removes the waste created by packaging and shipping foods purchased from a grocery store. Also, when you grow your own garden, you have control over the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides on the food you consume. SAVES MONEY: The only cost involved is the cost of the seed to grow the plant. From there, all of the produce you reap from the products is “free!” It is a simple way to reduce your weekly grocery bill. GREAT FOR KIDS: Along with all the other benefits to growing a garden, it is also great for kids! It is engaging and allows for hands-on learning, and also teaches them about responsibility. It’s a win-win! For more information, contact Buchanan County Health Center 319 – 332 – 0850

Community members have access to a new paved trail on part of the 92 acres owned by Independence Community School District. American Trotter Trail is in honor of the late C.W. Williams’ 1890’s horseracing publication of the same name. The trail is on the site of the former kite-shaped horse racing track that existed in the late 1880s and connects all three school buildings, creating a unified campus. American Trotter Trail provides a safe route for students, faculty and visitors between buildings and from one end of campus to the other. The half-mile trail features an eight-foot wide path, erosion control measures, trees, historical points of interest, and outdoor education features. Mustang Foundation is seeking donations for the trail, such as trash receptacles, benches, lighting and memorial plaques honoring loved ones or a graduating class, etc. The Mustang Foundation also manages The Final Push, raising funds for an All-Activities Complex next to the new Jr./Sr. High School. Contacting Matt Haddy for information at mhaddy@independence.k12.ia.us or 319-334-7400, ext. 773.

Habitat for Humanity extends application deadline

GROWING

Submitted by Buchanan Co. Habitat for Humanity

Buchanan County Habitat for Humanity will continue to take applications until June 1 for the next new build. The property is located at 607 3rd St. SE., Independence. Habitat for Humanity characterizes the program as “Not a hand out – a hand up!” Volunteer labor and donations allow the local organization to provide decent, safe and affordable homes for area residents. Recipient families invest many hours of their own labor to qualify for a home and purchase homes with affordable loans. Homeowner mortgage payments are then reinvested into more homes. Buchanan County Habitat for Humanity Treasurer Bonita Davis said, “You must be able to do ‘sweat equity’ hours to help in the build of the home; qualify under low income guidelines; and have income to be able to pay back the 0%/30 year loan.” Applications can be picked up at Operation Threshold, Independence Area Food Pantry and the Department of Human Services, or call 319-334-6922 and leave a name and complete address to have an application sent in the mail. Call President Diane Shonka at 563-920-3194; Davis at 319334-4475; or any other Habitat member regarding questions.

May is National Preservation Month

Buchanan County Historical Society promotes “Penny Challenge”

Public Notice

Submitted by Leanne Harrison

The “Penny Challenge,” sponsored by Buchanan County Historical Society, got a head start May 2 when Dunkerton second graders visited Heartland Acres Agribition Center and Wapsipinicon Mill in Independence. The students were excited to see the many displays at both facilities and enjoyed a picnic lunch. They had collected pennies to give to the Wapsipinicon Mill roof. The Penny Challenge, new for the historical society, is sponsored by the Wapsipinicon Mill. A miniature mill (built by a mill volunteer) will be at many Independence summer events, the first at the Chamber of Commerce “Friday Night Live” on May 16. It will also be featured at the Independence farmers markets Saturdays, 8 AM - noon, beginning May 17. Historical Society President Leanne Harrison said, “Start saving your pennies now! Volunteers from the mill will not be handing out candy at the 4th of July parade… instead, they will carry buckets for you to fill with pennies.” May is National Preservation Month and members of the Buchanan County Historical Society will do a presentation for eighth grade classes on May 9 about historic Independence – including the “Underground.” Also, 100 eighth graders will tour historic Independence on May 16. Harrison commented, “This is the first time this has been attempted and the society is hoping for a great success (and good weather.) We need to preserve our local heritage and it starts with school age!”

During May, the historical society and Buchanan County Certified Local Government are sponsoring a restoration workshop at Oakwood Cemetery, May 17-18. A morning workshop will be presented by John Heider of the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries. The afternoon hands-on workshop will demonstrate the correct way to restore tombstones. On May 17, the Wapsipinicon Mill opens, with hours six afternoons a week (noon-4 PM, closed Mondays). Volunteers are welcome, call Judy Scott at 319-334-3700. Pictured: Dunkerton second grade class tours Independence. (Courtesy Photo)

Mom’s gonnaLove ya!

Mother’s Day in the United States is annually held on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and it is a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures. Many people give gifts, cards, flowers, candy, a meal in a restaurant or other treats to their mother and mother figures, including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers. The origins of Mother’s Day are attributed to different people. Many believe that two women, Julia Ward Howe and

Anna Jarvis were important in establishing the tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States. Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers. Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mother’s Day to be celebrated each year to encourage pacifism and disarmament amongst women. It continued to be held in Boston for about ten years under her sponsorship, but died out after that.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mother’s Day celebration in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, West Virginia. Ann Jarvis had organized “Mother’s Day Work Clubs to improve health and cleanliness in the area where she lived. Anna Jarvis launched a quest for Mother’s Day to be more widely recognized. Her campaign was later financially supported by John Wanamaker, a clothing merchant from Philadelphia. In 1908, she was instrumental in arranging a service in the Andrew’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which was attended by 407 children and their mothers. The church has now become the International Mother’s Day Shrine. It is a tribute to all mothers and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. Mother’s Day has become a day that focuses on generally recognizing mothers’ and mother figures’ roles. The News & The Guide

The News & The Guide

BCHC Mammography Services earns re-accreditation Buchanan County Health Center Radiology Department’ Mammography services recently earned re-accreditation after a recent survey by the Iowa Department of Public Health. The peer-review accreditation process indicates that BCHC mammography services are up to par with official guidelines for mammography services, and demonstrate BCHC’s commitment to quality patient care. A mammogram is a digital x-ray exam of the breast that’s used to detect and evaluate breast changes. “We believe providing digital mammogram service locally makes it easier for women to schedule this life-saving test, said Julie Till, Radiology Manager. “We do approximately 800 mammography studies each year. All mammograms are read by board certified radiologists from Radiology Consultants of Iowa (RCI) in Cedar Rapids, one of the top 25 imaging facilities in the nation.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s survival. If detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 97%. The American Cancer Society recommends women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. Mammograms are the key to early detection and full recovery. For more information about mammography services call 319-332-0870 or check it out at www.bchealth.info.

Pictured at left: Buchanan County Health Center Radiology Department successfully completed the re-accreditation process for Mammography Services through the Iowa Department of Public Health. This peer-review process indicates that BCHC mammography services meet official guidelines for mammography services. Thanks to Char McCluskey, radiology tech, and Julie Till, radiology manager, for their excellent work in providing this service. For more about mammography services call 332-0870 or go to www. bchealth.info. (Courtesy Photo)

The News & The Guide

Applications for new USDA Wetland Easement Program due May 26 USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in Iowa is now accepting applications for its new Agricultural Conservation Easements Program (ACEP) to purchase conservation easements on eligible wetlands in Iowa. “This is an exciting new opportunity for even more people to get involved in conserving natural resources,” said Iowa state conservationist Jay Mar. “We encourage Indian tribes, non-governmental organizations and private landowners to contact their local NRCS office to find out how to apply.” The ACEP, created through the 2014 Farm Bill, funds both agricultural land and wetland easements. The ACEP combines NRCS’ former Farm and Ranch Lands Protection, Grassland Reserve and Wetlands Reserve programs. This initial signup in Iowa only includes wetland reserve easement (ACEP-WRE) applications. Wetland reserve easements restore and enhance wetlands and improve habitat. Eligible lands include farmed or converted wetlands that can be successfully and cost-effectively restored. Accepted ACEP-WRE applications will be rated according to the easement’s potential for protecting and enhancing habitat for migratory birds, fish and other wildlife. Applications must be submitted to Iowa NRCS by May 26. Applications are available at local USDA Service Centers and at www.nrcs.usda.gov/GetStarted. Applications will be evaluated starting in late June.

HCC spring graduation set for May 16 Submitted by Hawkeye Community College

Hawkeye Community College’s (HCC) spring commencement ceremony is set for 7 PM Friday, May 16 at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, Cedar Falls. The keynote speaker is Waterloo native Laura Freeman, a 2007 HCC graduate. She continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa where she graduated cum laude in 2009. Freeman then obtained a degree in prosthetics and orthotics from Saint Petersburg College in Pinellas Park FL in May 2012. After battling a serious illness as a teenager, Freeman made it her calling in life to help other patients explore a world they may have never known without the use of artificial limbs. She was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 12 and as a result had to have her leg amputated at the age of 15. Because of that life-changing event, she decided to specialize in orthotics and prosthetics to help patients regain their mobility by fitting them with artificial limbs and braces. Freeman’s ultimate career goal is to work at a Shriners children’s hospital. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 22 non-profit hospitals in the United States that serves children with a variety of ailments, including orthopedic conditions, burns, and spinal cord injuries. Freeman and her husband, Andrew, live in Glen Ellyn IL. For those unable to attend, there will be a live broadcast of the graduation at 7 PM Friday, May 16, on the Hawkeye website at www.hawkeyecollege.edu Additional information is available by calling 319-296-4027.

Please allow me to continue serving you. Vote Wright for Treasurer at the Primary Election on June 3rd, 2014

Strengthening economy and working families Iowa legislators adjourned the 2014 session after reaching bipartisan agreements that will have big benefits for our state. Republicans and Democrats worked together to expand opportunities for all Iowans while strengthening economic security for working families. The top achievements of the 2014 session include: • Balancing the state budget without raising taxes. Iowa is expected to have a budget surplus of about $610 million when this fiscal year ends on June 30. We also have $649 million in our reserve funds, the largest amount in state history. • Expanding skills training to help Iowans fill openings for good jobs at local businesses. • Increasing funding for infrastructure investments and boosting incentives for businesses that create good local jobs and grow the economy. • Keeping tuition affordable at our colleges and universities, including leading the effort to freeze tuition at Iowa State, UNI and the University of Iowa for the second year in a row. • Boosting student achievement in our K-12 schools through investments in early reading initiatives and quality teaching. • Continuing our commitment to Iowa’s quality of life with strong investments in the environment, as well as cultural and recreational opportunities. I want to thank all the constituents who took the time to contact me during the session. Your suggestions and priorities are reflected in many of the bills that made it to the Governor’s desk. As your State Senator, I am available to you year around. Please get in touch in the coming months with any concerns and ideas you want to share. You can e-mail me at brian. schoenjahn@legis.iowa.gov. A complete list of this year’s many accomplishments can be found at www.senate.iowa.gov/democrats/2014-sessionsuccesses.

Smithsonian Tallgrass Prairie Exhibit travels to area nature center

Upper Iowa University commencement is May 10

Submitted by Buchanan Co. Conservation Board

Ever listened to the prairie? What stories might it tell? Listen to them at Fontana Interpretive Nature Center May 10 until August. This exhibit, entitled “Listen to the Prairie – Farming in Nature’s Image, was created by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and has toured since 2001. Friends of Hartman Reserve Nature Center (Black Hawk County Conservation) received a grant to bring the exhibit to Iowa and assist in its travel across the state. Ed Gruenwald, Hartman Reserve Nature Center director explained: “What we are trying to do is to send a Smithsonian quality exhibit to small-town Iowa. We want to let all Iowan’s know that their stories and relationships with the land are important and are worth sharing. “ This exhibit focuses on the tallgrass prairie ecosystem, and how it has changed into one of the most productive agricultural lands on earth. Over 90% of Iowa was once covered in tallgrass prairie; now, only .01% of it remains. This exhibit leads visitors through diverse prairie ecosystem and why it’s important, the conversion from prairie to farmland, and how modern agriculture can maintain its viability while still protecting and preserving prairie lands for future generations. Touch screens, audio clips, and engaging artwork help tell the story of this interactive exhibit. The exhibit is free of charge and can be viewed at the Fontana Interpretive Nature Center, Hazleton, during regular operating hours (8 AM-noon Monday and Tuesday, 8 AM-noon and 1-4:30 PM Wednesday through Friday, and 1-5 PM Saturday and Sunday). Don’t miss the chance to “Listen to the Prairie!

Buchanan County is accepting applications for Board/Commission members.

Upper Iowa University (UIU) will hold two commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 10. Weather permitting, both ceremonies will be held outdoors at Harms-Eischeid Stadium at the Fayette campus. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved into Dorman Memorial Gymnasium. West Fargo Regional President John Stavnes is the keynote speaker. A 1975 UIU graduate, he is responsible for the company’s business banking operations in eastern Iowa and several Western Illinois markets. UIU School of Business and masters of business administration program students will receive diplomas at 10 AM. The 2 PM commencement ceremony will present diplomas to graduates from the Andres School of Education and the Schools of Liberal Arts and Science and Mathematics, as well as from the masters of education and masters of higher education administration programs. Both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration also will be presented in the afternoon ceremony. About 2,000 UIU students are eligible for graduation this year, representing not only the Fayette campus, but 19 centers in the United States, international centers, and online or independent study programs.
