Local students gain new perspective during trip to Washington DC Submitted by ECI REC

ECI REC sent two local high school students to Washington DC in mid-June as part of the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. Bristian Gerber of Vinton-Shellsburg High School and Zachary Fischels of Independence High School traveled to the nation’s capital with a delegation of 35 students and five chaperones, representing not-for-profit electric cooperatives across Iowa. Joining them was Morgan Weber of Jesup High School, also from ECI REC’s service area, who won a Youth Tour trip in IAEC Living with Energy in Iowa magazine essay contest. The national Youth Tour program is coordinated by statewide electric cooperative associations and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). In 1958, Iowa electric cooperatives began sending student leaders to the nation’s capital each summer where they get an up-close look at the political process while also touring national museums, monuments, and memorials. Students also learn more about the role not-for-profit electric cooperatives play in providing safe, reli-

PAGE 9

able, affordable, and sustainable power to members. “Electric cooperatives are about more than poles and wires – they’re about people and communities, said Steve Marlow, ECI REC CEO. “We’re proud to support this youth leadership program as we educate a new generation of co-op members. On the tour, students met with their elected legislators, talked to staff from NRECA and other organizations, and gained a personal understanding of American history and their role as American citizens. Most of the students were financially sponsored by their local co-op and were selected to attend based on their community involvement, interest in government, and academic performance. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many rural students who are visiting Washington DC for the first time. Pictured at right, from left: Bristian Gerber, Zachary Fischels, and Morgan Weber. Red Cross urges blood donations to prevent seasonal shortage

American Red Cross urges donors to choose their day to give hope to patients in need by donating blood or platelets during the “100 days of summer. 100 days of hope campaign. Summer vacations and travel can contribute to less availability for people to give blood or platelets. In a spring survey of Red Cross blood and platelet donors, nearly 90% indicated plans to take vacations this summer. However, patients don’t get a summer holiday or vacation from needing lifesaving blood. The Red Cross relies on volunteer donors for the 15,000 blood donations needed every day to support patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. To learn more about upcoming blood drives, visit www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

Let it flow!

Despite on and off showers, many turned out for “Let It Flow, Riverfest held June 20 in Manchester. People flocked to the new whitewater park on the Maquoketa River and part of Franklin Street was closed for a street fair and music. (Christine Dale Photos)

Living Well with Buchanan County Health Center Summertime is prime time to enjoy a cookout with family and friends. The weather is great and the food tastes even greater. Try a few of these tips to enjoy your meal while still keeping your health in mind. • Choose lean meats such as “loinâ€? and “roundâ€? cuts when possible which are typically leaner than other options. • Go for chicken and fish - great options for the grill. They are high in protein and low in fat. Fish also contains heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. • Throw on veggies: Peppers, onions, asparagus, and other vegetables are great low calorie additions to your meal. You can even enhance flavor for minimal added calories with your favorite herbs and spices. • Add the fruit: Cut up some fresh pineapple or watermelon, or throw some slices of grapes and strawberries on a skewer for a fun, healthy treat. • Watch the drinks: Soda and alcoholic beverages add numerous “emptyâ€? calories to your meal. Go for water whenever possible. Not only is it calorie-free, it aids in rehydrating your body on hot summer days.

Ag land market continues a gradual decline

While current land values have generally trended lower this past year in comparison to the sharp increases of recent years, results of farm and ranch income at year’s end could shift land market dynamics, according to Farmers National Company. “Harvest results of 2015 will make it a pivotal year, which could impact the land market for several years, said Randy Dickhut, vice president of Real Estate Operations of Farmers National Company. Dickhut says margin compression is occurring as a result of lower grain prices and steady input costs. He believes higher grain prices this fall would stabilize land values; however, lower prices could push values downward. Location and quality of land continue to be the main drivers of pricing for individual tracts. The stability of this market is maintained by a lower supply of land for sale, contrasted with a continued demand for quality properties. In Iowa, the average price of high-quality, non-irrigated land has dropped from $12,250 in June 2015 to $11,000 in the same month of 2015. In areas where there is fewer livestock being raised, land values have definitely softened. Specific areas that have seen outbreaks of the Avian flu will definitely see a downward trend, as owners have had to destroy more than 30 million birds. While current buyers are predominantly active farmers and ranchers adding land to their operations, interest from investment funds and individuals is on the rise. In addition, generational land transfers continue to play a large role in market movements, as many inheriting land choose to sell. Demand for cropland and grazing land from owner operators remains good, but buyers are being more realistic in what they will pay given lower grain prices. Land professionals are recommending sellers be more realistic in evaluating the quality of their land and the expected selling price in order to have a successful sale. According to Dickhut, long term economic trends look positive in relation to land values and ag markets. Demand for feed grains and protein sources by China and other world markets will remain strong long term as the growing world population has a desire to eat better.

Summer webinars help gardeners grow in knowledge

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Buchanan County office is hosting the sixth annual “Growing Seasonâ€? webinar series at Independence, during July, August and September. The three-part series, offered by Iowa Master Gardener program, features an Iowa Master Gardener and Iowa State University faculty or extension specialist presenting each of the two-hour courses. These programs are open to anyone who would like to learn more about these topics. The July webinar, Design from Yard to Trough, with Iowa State University Department of Horticulture lecturer Lisa Orgler and Buchanan County Master Gardener Gary Whittenbaugh, will be on July 30, at Heartland Acres Theater, from 6:30-8:30 PM. Participants will learn how to add spark to landscape designs and dive into trough planters filled with conifers and their companions. “Garden design should be fun and represent the person who creates it,â€? explained Orgler. “The theme garden design process is helpful to someone creating a garden in celebration of who they are as an artist, designer and gardener.â€? Everyone taking this class will learn a simple five-step process to develop a theme from beginning to end. “You can’t have too many troughs in your garden,â€? said Whittenbaugh who will demonstrate container gardening using troughs. “We’ll use old muffin tins, cast iron pans and concrete planters for my favorite plants including conifers, hen and chicks and sedum.â€? Whittenbaugh often gives tours of his Franmara Gardens in Oelwein. As a master gardener volunteer he also speaks to groups around the state on dwarf conifers and trough gardens. Growing Season webinars for August and September include: •Water in the Garden. ISU Extension and Outreach horticulturist Denny Schrock along with Boone County Master Gardener Jamie Beyer, will discuss various water saving techniques to apply to the garden and how to incorporate creative water features. •Pollinators and Growing Herbs. Nathan Brockman, curator of the butterfly wing of Reiman Gardens at Iowa State, and Polk County Master Gardener Susan Appleget Hurst will educate attendees about attracting bees, birds and butterflies. They will also focus on growing, harvesting and preserving culinary herbs. To register for any or all webinars at the ISU Extension and Outreach Buchanan County office, contact Ashley Sherrets at 319-334-7161 or sherrets@iastate.edu. Master Gardeners offer these webinars free to anyone who would like to attend, however pre-registration is required. All master gardeners attending will earn two continuing education hours for each webinar. To learn how to become an Iowa Master Gardener, visit the program website.

Manchester Ambassadors make June visits

PAGE11

Info/Photos submitted Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce

The Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors made three visits in June. The first visit was to MREP (Manchester Regional Education Partnership) to tour the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) classroom and learn about a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Camp taught there. Ambassadors learned about projects the 12 5-8th graders were working on, observed a launch of their compressed air rockets and watched as they used simple scientific instruments to measure height, distance and angles. This was the first year the PLTW summer camp was offered and its success means it will be offered again next summer along with an advanced level camp. The second visit was a tour of the St. Paul’s School of Religion building on Clara Street. Now that religion classes have been moved to St. Mary’s, the 6,600 square-foot building, which sits on three acres, is available for other uses. The third visit was to Cornerstone Community Church to officially meet and greet new minister Pastor Tim Agrimson. Agrimson and his wife Kirsten, gave the ambassadors a tour of the church and explained how the church is working to fulfill its mission.
