Police responded to a call at 55 Ave and 50 Street in Vegreville on July 10 just before 1 a.m. after a driver hit a parked car. Witness accounts say the driver nearly sideswiped another vehicle before coming to a stop on a front lawn of a residence in Vegreville. Police arrived and arrested a 32 year-old Edmonton man who subsequently failed a blood-alcohol test. He now faces charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation of a motor vehicle with a BA level over .08. No one was injured in the incident. (Jess Marsh/Photo Submitted)

Local warning systems in place for Vegreville and area
Town of Vegreville We are in the midst of our severe summer storm season which generally lasts from approximately the middle of May through the middle of September, with the most active period during July and early August. The Town of Vegreville Emergency Management Agency, in conjunction with the Vegreville Fire Department, feel it is beneficial to inform or remind our residents of two means of communicating severe weather developments or types of incidents that have the potential to cause major loss to life and/or property. The Town of Vegreville has programmed our Fire Siren (located on the Town Office) to stay at a continuous high wail for several minutes, like an air raid siren. This long continuous wail is a warning to local residents that a major
situation is threatening our community, like a tornado for example. This wail is different from the standard Fire Siren that wails up and down ten times. Should you hear a long continuous wail, and only if it is safe to do so, it is advised that you have a look outside and observe the sky line in all directions. If you see imminent danger, seek shelter and try to have a radio, preferably battery operated, with you. Following the siren wail, time permitting, a message may be broadcast through a system called the Alberta Emergency Alert. The Alberta Emergency Alert rebroadcasts warnings of imminent danger to all radio stations, television stations and cable systems. Warnings are also broadcast via Facebook and Twitter. In order to receive messages on Facebook, you need to ‘like’ the Alberta Emergency Alert and you need to ‘follow’ them on Twitter at AB_EmergAlert. You may have heard an actual warning broadcast or possibly a test of the system. It will have a long, unique sounding tone, with beeping and then a pre-recorded message explaining the situation and providing information on what to do. The Town of Vegreville has a select group of authorized users, trained in the activation of these systems. Log on to www.weatheroffice.gc.ca for more information on severe summer weather. To find out how to prepare for major disasters, please visit www.getprepared.ca. Most of the Town of Vegreville Facilities provide a 72-Hour Emergency Preparedness Guide and other Emergency Preparedness Information Brochures for pickup.

Hot temps see water ban over weekend washing vehicle fleets, spraying down driveways, excessive lawn watering and so forth. Despite having the measure, actual reservoir levels in Vegreville stayed within acceptable parameters, Infrastructure Planning & Development Director Dale Lefebvre said. John S. Batiuk water commission manager Pat Tomkow added that on the east end things were less dire than other regions. “We were fortunate on this side, we weren’t impacted as much as Morinville, St. Alberta and those communities,” Tomkow said. “Most communities [in this region] have adequate water storage and aren’t impacted as much.” Regional water commissions supplied by Epcor are treated as one customer class by the City of Edmonton’s water provider. As a rule, they cannot collectively exceed the peak demand of the city of Edmonton itself. While water measures haven’t been a common occurrence in the past, as populations swell over time, class A and B measures cutting back non-essential water use may become more common, as is already the case in neighbouring province British Columbia.
Michael Simpson Editor A series of hot dry days resulted in a temporary water rationing to be imposed on Vegreville over the weekend, which was lifted early Monday morning. Demand measures on nonessential water use both by the municipality and residents were in effect after the Edmonton Regional Customers Group saw water reserves dipping below 65 per cent heading into last weekend. Vegreville has been purchasing water from the John S.
Batiuk Regional Water Commission for decades after weaning itself from the Vermilion River supply. The commission’s water access is tied to activity and growth pressures in the major urban areas in and around Edmonton, all of which are supplied by Epcor, who supplies the Capital Region Northeast Water Services Commission, from which the John S. Batiuk purchases its
water. The water demand measure issued to the public was a class B measure, which includes class A municipal demand measure on water main flushing, sewer main flushing, firefighting training, street sweeping, irrigating parks and more, as well as

90 Years Ago – July 15, 1925 While damage from heat and lack of moisture is reported from many southern points in the province, such is not the case throughout this district. The intense heat of the past week has only served to bring the wheat along to maturity much more rapidly than would be expected and, while a heavy train would be acceptable, it will not be really necessary until the end of the present week. It is estimated that at least 50% to 60% of the wheat in the district is now in head and within a week the full 100% will be out. The damage from the hail, which worried our friend from Forty Nine Creek, does not live up to his pessimistic outlook. In fact, the damage was comparatively slight and did not affect a very large tract of the country. Practically all of the grain struck has recovered. Brush Hill entertained a large number of visitors last Saturday at the annual picnic. In the baseball tournament, Ryan won from Highlow; Brush Hill won from Imperial; in the final game between Brush Hill and Ryan, only three innings were played, the game being called on account of darkness. 75 Years Ago – July 10, 1940 The elections of Mexico, such as they are, went to the polls on Monday to elect a new President of that turbulent country. No one knows the result as yet for Mexican elections are not conducted along the lines understood in Canada. However, they take their politics seriously there as something like one hundred people were killed in rioting on election day. The candidates were General Almazan and General Camacho. Hitler and his bloody gangsters are in for a tremendous lick from every nook and corner of the Dominion – and Canadians everywhere are going to enjoy themselves to the full in the process of applying the licks. The cry has gone out, “Stamp Out Hitler with War Stamps” and the licking of the stamps is being encouraged in a nationwide drive which has been launched by the entire motion picture industry of this country to promote the purchase of the 25c stamps to aid the government in its war effort at this critical hour. 50 Years Ago – July 15, 1965 The Bank of Montreal is Vegreville moved to the rear portion of its new building on Monday morning and it was “business as usual” in it’s confined but satisfactory surroundings. First customers Monday morning were greeted by Manager Jim Richmond and they were Art Beaudette, Lloyd Love and Stan Bellegay. The Hon. H. Strom, Minister of Agriculture, will officially open the 1965 Vegreville Fair at the grandstand Monday, July 26th. The ceremony will take place at the 7:00 p.m. performance. Citizens of the town will be requested to observe the meaning of the garbage by-law by making sure their refuse is properly set out for pickup. In particular, though, is the matter of placing of garbage cans in the lanes. The cans and stand should not project any more that 24” into the lane. Mr. Alec Essers of Lloydminster has assumed ownership of Curry’s Credit Jewellers, and has made tentative plans for an official opening sometime this summer. Alex and Mrs. Essers were in town on Tuesday, but have no immediate plans for moving to Vegreville. Miss Mary Fedoruk and Sally Marchinew will continue to operate the business for Mr. Essers.

Greece and the Euro: What Now? Gwynne Dyer In theory, it could still work. It only requires three miracles. Maybe the resounding “no” to the eurozone’s terms for a third bail-out in Sunday’s referendum in Greece (61 percent against) will force the euro currency’s real managers, Germany and France, to reconsider. Maybe the International Monetary Fund will publicly urge the eurozone’s leaders to cancel more of Greece’s crushing load of debt. Last Thursday the IMF released a report saying that Greece needed an extra 50 billion euros ($55 billion) over three years to roll over existing debt – but that even then, its debt was “unsustainable” in the long term. And maybe Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will accept the terms he asked Greek voters to reject in the referendum if he can also get a big chunk of debt relief – say around 100 billion euros ($110 billion), about a third of Greece’s total debt – from the eurozone authorities and the IMF. It’s all the-
oretically possible, but it would require radically different behaviour from all the parties involved. Tsipras has already made one big gesture. On the morning after the referendum victory, he ditched his flamboyant finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, who had needlessly alienated every other eurozone finance minister with his scattergun abuse. (He called them all “terrorists” during the referendum campaign.) The IMF’s gesture was even bigger, if much belated. It knew the eurozone’s strategy was wrong from the time of the first bail-out in 2010, and it is finally admitting it. There was no debt relief at all in the 2010 bail-out, and only privatesector creditors were forced to take a “haircut” (around 30 percent) in the second bail-out in 2012. Most of Greece’s debt was owed to German and French banks, and that wasn’t touched. Instead, 90 percent of the country’s bail-out loans have gone straight into repaying European banks. Why didn’t the IMF blow the whistle on this long ago? Because it was not taking the lead in these negotiations, and by taking part in the 2010 bail-out anyway it broke its own rules. It also knew that devaluation, usually a key part of IMF bailouts, is impossible for Greece unless it actually leaves the euro (which
Greeks desperately don’t want to do). So the usual post-bailout economic recovery didn’t happen. In five years Greece’s debt grew by half, its economy shrank by a quarter, and unemployment rose to 25 percent. Most Greeks know that the current approach simply isn’t working, which is why they voted “no” in the referendum. The eurozone authorities also know that Greece’s debt can never be repaid in full, so why don’t they just give the Greeks the debt relief they need? Partly because Chancellor Angela Merkel knows that her own German voters would be furious at more “charity” funded by their taxes, whereas they stay fairly quiet so long as the debt is still on the books. Partly because other eurozone countries would see it as special treatment for Greece. Italy, Spain, Portugal and Ireland have also been through harrowing bail-out programs, and they don’t see why they should pay for Greece’s folly in running up such huge debts. So it really isn’t possible to predict whether Tsipras and Greece will be offered a better deal or not. It’s equally impossible to say what will happen to the euro “single currency” if there is no deal and Greece crashes out of the euro in the next couple of weeks, although the eurozone authorities insist that they could weather the storm. We live in interesting times. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Award-worthy service at Covenant Health Covenant Health Mission Awards showcase extraordinary staff in your community Provincial awards honour those who provide care with integrity, compassion, collaboration, stewardship, respect and social justice Each year, Covenant Health holds an awards ceremony to recognize individuals and teams that are outstanding examples of living our Mission of serving with compassion, upholding the sacredness of life in all stages and caring for the whole person—body, mind and soul, in all they do. There are six Mission Awards, one for each of Covenant Health’s values; compassion, respect, collaboration, social justice, integrity and stewardship. Employees, physicians, board members and volunteers are nominated by their peers, members of their communities, or by patients and residents. Six recipients, one for each value, were chosen at a Mission Awards Gala in Edmonton, held on April 16. This year, there were two nominations in the Mundare and Vegreville communities: Diane Hiebert, Registered Nurse, St. Joseph’s General Hospital; and Food Services, Facilities Maintenance and Engineering from both St. Joseph ’s General and Mar y Immaculate Hospitals. Diane has worked in the Emergency department for over 20 years, and was nominated for integrity.
According to Leanne Stuart, fellow nurse, Diane advocates strongly for her community. “She believes people in rural communities should expect and receive the same or greater level of attention and care as people in the larger centres. This not only refers to the level of skill of the nursing staff and physicians, but also to the level of equipment and supplies available to provide that care.” Diane leads the P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) Program, and has done so for over ten years, and plays an integral role in the immunization of both the Vegreville community and her colleagues for the f lu. “She is an important cog in our wheel—she is a significant factor in ensuring the department runs smoothly and our patients receive safe, effective care,” says Leanne. The Food Services, Facilities Maintenance and Engineering staff were nominated for collaboration. The teams worked together to continue to provide quality meals for patients and residents when a pipe burst in the ceiling of the kitchen of Mary Immaculate Hospital in December. Throughout the holiday season, the teams from both Mary Immaculate and St. Joseph’s worked together to bring food from one facility to the other while ensuring they were providing quality meals for those in their care. The two buildings being over 29
kilometers apart, they faced some unique challenges. According to a supervisor, “It is a great example of how two departments can really rely on each other through a rough patch to come to a common goal with respect and caring to ensure our residents are well-served.”

Protect yourself from Hantavirus AHS Albertans are reminded of the important steps they should take to pr o t e c t t hem s el ve s f r om Hantavirus. Hantavirus is a serious illness that mostly affects the lungs/respiratory system. Caused when humans inhale airborne particles of urine or feces from an infected rodent, anyone
working in an area where mice or mice droppings might be present and become disturbed, can be at risk. To protect yourself and reduce your risk of illness, follow these precautions whenever cleaning areas of mice or mice droppings: - Open doors and windows for ventilation, and keep out of the area for at
least 30 minutes prior to commencing clean up. - Wear rubber gloves, thoroughly soak droppings, nests and dead mice with a bleach/water solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) or a household disinfectant. - Let the bleach water solution sit for five minutes. - Never disturb any droppings, nests or dead mice, prior to soaking with this bleach solution. - Mop up bleach-soaked droppings,

nest and/or dead mice, or pick up with paper towels, and place them in a plastic bag. - Seal the bag and put in a garbage container with a tight fitting lid. - Wash your gloves before removing, and then wash your hands. - Never vacuum or sweep droppings, nests or dead mice. This can create dust that can be inhaled. The dust may contain Hantavirus. Although rare, Hantavirus can be fatal. Infected individuals typically show symptoms one to two weeks following exposure; however, symptoms can appear up to five weeks after exposure. Symptoms resemble severe f lu, including fever, body aches, chills, abdominal problems and severe breathing problems. For more inform at ion v isit MyHealth. What are the basic facts of the Windows 10 upgrade? Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as free upgrade for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. It will be available starting July 29, 2015; people can reserve their free upgrade today. You only have until July 29, 2016 to take advantage of this offer. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device. Is the upgrade really free? Yes, it’s free. This is a full version of Windows, not a trial or introductory version. It is available for a limited time: You have one year from the time Windows 10 is available to take advantage of this offer. Windows Offer Details Yes... really. It’s free! This upgrade offer is for a full version of Windows 10, not a trial. 3GB download required. To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device. Windows 10 Upgrade Offer is valid for qualified Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, including devices you already own. Some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device and market. The availability of Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 devices may vary by OEM, mobile operator or carrier. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded such as Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. You must be running the latest version of Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) or Windows 8 (Windows 8.1 Update) to receive the free upgrade to Windows 10 via Windows Update. How do I get my free upgrade? You can do one of two things: a) Buy a new Windows 8.1 device and upgrade it to Windows 10 for free, or b) Reserve a free upgrade for your existing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PC What happens when I reserve? When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly. Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade. Are there any qualification requirements? The only requirements are that a) your device is compatible, and b) you’re running genuine Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows 8.1 (Update). Sorry pirates. You lose again. Windows 10 is designed to run on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs. That means your device is likely compatible and will run Windows 10. If I buy a new PC today, can it upgrade to Windows 10? Yes, new qualified PCs can run Windows 10. Windows 10 is designed to be compatible with the Windows 8.1 laptop,
Get Windows 10 is an app that’s designed to make the upgrade process easy. It checks to make sure your device is compatible, and it reserves your free upgrade; it also has information to help you learn about the features in Windows 10. For devices running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update with Windows Update enabled, the app shows up automatically as a Windows icon in your system tray at the bottom right-hand side of your screen. If I change my mind, can I cancel my reservation? Yes, you can cancel your reservation at any time prior to installing Windows 10. Here’s how: -Right click on the Get Windows 10 app or Windows icon located in right end of the taskbar. - Select “Check your upgrade status” - Click the menu in the upper left corner, then select “View Confirmation.” - In the lower left, select “Cancel reservation.” What edition of Windows will I get as part of this free upgrade? When you upgrade, you’ll stay on like-to-like editions of Windows. For example, Windows 7 Home Premium will upgrade to Windows 10 Home. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer. Will all my stuff be in the cloud? Your files are saved on the hard drive of your device by default. Windows 10 includes OneDrive which provides free storage space in the cloud; this is completely optional, but gives you the benefit of being able to access your personal files from anywhere. For more information, please visit : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq Anything Else? Well, I imagine that there will be a rash of “Scumware” coming that will look and feel like a windows upgrade. Your first line of defense is to ensure you have a good (up to date) antivirus software running on your computers. Second, much like a Nigerian Prince with millions of dollars needing your help to move his riches out of the country.... if it doesn’t sound right, it likely isn’t. I doubt anyone will be calling your to tell you that your Windows 10 upgrade failed and for $49.95 and access to your computer, they can fix it. Be smart and enjoy the free upgrade if you are eligible.

Willows offer Albertans renewable energy source
Scott Lundy AITF When Albertans think of willow trees and shrubs, chances are they think of these hardy, quick-growing plants as possible additions to their gardens or as plants to grow on their farms as a windbreak or along their laneways. So it may surprise many of you to learn the Town of Whitecourt and Camrose County are among those Alberta municipalities converting willows into biofuel. AITF Thermochemical Processing Team Lead Don Harfield, who is based out of Vegreville’s AITF facility, participated in a “Willow Harvesting and Combustion Field Day” organized by the Alberta Rural Organic Waste to Resources Network (AROWRN) on April 22. The goal of this year’s event was to connect the links in Alberta’s fast-growing woody biomass to the province’s energy production chain. “Many people would be surprised to learn municipalities in Alberta are already investing in technologies that use wood biomass to provide heat energy to their municipal buildings,” said Don. “Camrose County’s use of feedstock from Ohaton’s willow plantation is an example of how Albertans utilize environmentally sustainable and renewable resources to complement their efficient use of energy from fossil fuels to the benefit of local communities.”

VVA introduces… How to do an oil painting!
VVA Submitted Oil painting is a versatile medium suitable for any style or genre. Their rich colours, buttery consistency and unique fragrance make them a delight to work with. The paint is applied to a support, such as a pre stretched canvas with brushes or painting knives. Oil paint is slow drying which can work to your advantage - make a mistake just wipe it off. The slow drying properties also allow for delicate blending, fine detail and interesting textural effects. Getting started: 1. Paint: oil paint comes in tubes and is available in student and professional grade. 2. Palette: available in wood, plastic, disposable paper or make your own. 3. Brushes: please don’t use your grandmother’s favourite watercolour brush, purchase brushes that are specifically for oil paint. Buy good brushes and look after them. 4. Easel: painting with your canvas in an upright position is easier than horizontal; an inexpensive table top easel will suffice. 5. Solvent: used to thin your paint and for clean up. Purchase an eco friendly brand available at art supply stores. 6. Lint-free rags: cleaning brushes and removing or applying paint to your support. 7. Supports: pre stretched canvas, canvas paper, canvas boards or wood panels primed with acrylic gesso. 8. Palette knife: used to mix colours on your palette. 9. Safety: do not eat, drink or smoke while painting. Dispose of solvents properly. Painting is a very personal and enjoyable pursuit so let us begin. Select a picture or a sketch. Determine the highlights and shadows. What direction is the light coming from? Work from the distance to foreground. For a landscape, set your horizon line two- thirds down the canvas. Cover the canvas with a very thin coat of liquid white, this will help colours blend. Wipe
brush on your rag or paper towel to remove excess paint between usages, clean as required. Using 2” brush take some blue and paint the sky, keeping the outer edges darkest. For your landscape, create ground colours by combining green, brown and rust colours. Using a palette knife take a dab of each colour and spread thinly on palette; use your 2” brush to drag through the paint. Starting at the outer edge of your canvas, create rolling hills or mountains with clean horizontal strokes. By varying your greens and browns, lighten or darken your landscape adding dimension and character. Layers of thin coats are better than thick goopy layers. To create fir trees, take your fan brush with black, brown and green and vertically shape the tree. Using the same brush, create the branches using a horizontal stroke pressing down from the corner to the middle like a smile. To highlight the tops of the tree branches, use the same paint with some white to give a lighter shade. Again, take some green, white and a little yellow to highlight where the sunlight hits the tree. Make sure shadows are away from your light source. Create bushes with the same colours using a round brush with a tapping motion. Add flowers for variety and interest; add grass to the base of the tree using a combination of your browns, greens and yellows and applying the colour with your fan brush using an upward sweeping motion. A script brush is also useful to paint grass, dry branches, birds and your signature. Have fun and happy painting! Gallery, is located in the Vegreville Centennial Library , where this featured art form will be displayed. Borshch Cook-off judges announced
Hazel Anaka www.babasandborshch.ca The third annual Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival is now just weeks away. Festival Coordinator Hazel Anaka is issuing a challenge and an invitation to all ‘closet cooks’ to enter this fun event. Entries are limited to the first 15 who call 780-365-2434 or write babasandborshch@gmail.com “(The cook off) has been one of the
most popular aspects of the festival and we expect this year to be no different. In fact, based on early registrations, there will be some drama. Last year’s winner, Nicholas Zachoda of the St. Michael area will be competing head-to-head, ladle-to-ladle with first year winner (and his Baba) Helen Zachoda from Mundare. Last year young Nicholas took the judges by surprise with his secret ingredient, an
egg from one of his own chickens,” said Anaka. “I hear he’s been tending his vegetable garden with a lot of TLC and finessing his chopping skills…. pretty impressive for a teen.” “But, it all comes down to taste. It doesn’t matter how clever the stories they tell or how beautiful their place setting display is. Sure, those provide great entertainment value for the crowd but for us as judges, only the taste matters,” said Chef Gail Hall who is returning as one of the judges for her third year. Joining Hall this year is Chef Brad Smoliak of Kitchen by Brad and founder/editor of The Tomato food and drink magazine, Mary Bailey.
Cooks compete for one of three prizes (a custom-made borshch bowl by Vegreville’s Debra CherniawskyDurrer) and bragging rights. “Even though there was some trash talk last year and the Edmonton Journal has referred to it as a Borshch Smackdown, this is strictly a fun event. No one is going to win a million dollars,” said Anaka. This year the Cook Off is sandwiched between Gail Hall’s Borshch Demo Cooking Class at 11:30, now free and open to all who attend, and the festival’s close out event: the screening of a documentary called A Place Called Shandro. Three excellent reasons to be in Andrew August 23rd.

Tape-it-up Tuesday bound with fun
Rosanne Fortier To create something amazing with duct tape just takes imagination and common materials like Popsicle sticks, cardboard or card stock. Even if it was warm outside, cool was the number one word used at the f irst Tape-It Up Tuesdays’ program at Vegreville Centennial Library. This program launched on June 30 where there was a planning section where kids wrote down what they wanted to design and what colors they wished to use for their project. Carmen Heisler and Sonora Bohaychuk, led the children in their projects. They explained that the possibilities with duct tape were endless as they researched the internet with the kids. An owl bag was one idea, f lip-f lops and dancing shoes which were created with duct tape were another.

She received classical French Cuisine training under Chef Jean-Jacques and Chef Katsuhito Inoue who trained her and helped turn a passion into a thriving career. Upon graduation, Tayne worked multiple jobs to expand her skill set from small cafes to busy pubs to fine dining restaurants. She’s proud of what she’s accomplished and thanks her wonderful husband, Chad Bishop, for being so supportive. When Chad received a job offer to work in Vegreville, they packed up and headed here for the next adventure. Tayne has enjoyed learning about the local history and rich Ukrainian culture found here. She has met many friendly locals here in Vegreville mostly while working at ‘The Pour House Café’ and catering shop where she is currently completing her Red Seal apprenticeship under Laura Harris, owner and operator. When not at The Pour House during the week, Tayne is found cooking (and baking) up a storm on Saturday nights at the historic Vegreville Train Station. She’s bringing her 10+ years of cooking experience to the ‘Open Mic’ nights at The Train Station, offering a plentiful and exciting buffet experience for the musicians or those just looking for supper and a show. Each week so far has had a multicultural theme to it, a recent wonderful Italian night which included a variety of culinary Italian delights and a tiramisu! All dishes are freshly made, using locally-sourced products whenever possible. Tayne hopes everyone will embrace these exciting new ‘theme’ nights at the historic heritage site of The Vegreville Train Station. While she provides new and exciting food, The Train Station will also always have

Review: Arkham Knight
Duncan Korpan-Wood Gaming provides a lot of experiences; in no other media platform can you lead a rebel army, invade a temple with magic sword in hand and crush the evil within or have your heart stopped by a lurching zombie. Then there is the superhero genre. Periodically these games have been, well there is no delicate way to phrase this…bad. Most superhero games lack the feel of the superhero or are tone deaf to the character itself. If you were to play Superman 64 for example
without reading any of the comics you might think that Superman goes around flying through rings all day. However in 2009 gamers were pleasantly surprised to find a superhero game that was fantastic. Batman: Arkham Asylum. This game captured Batman and captured every facet of being Batman, villains, plot and combat were superb. Now six years later after an equally-as-good sequel and an underappreciated prequel, we have the end to the trilogy; Batman: Arkham Knight.
I won’t touch too much on the plot as it is very spoilerific. I will say that it is very well presented and very true to the Batman canon universe. The stakes feel very real and at times feel insurmountable. Batman begins to present himself as a vulnerable character as the plot progresses, which very much humanizes what could be a story about a man playing dress-up beating up rioters. The downside to the plot is that it does require a certain amount of time invested in the previous two games. A lot of the plot and some of the side missions are a continuation of story threads planted previously. While the in-game encyclopedia does do a fantastic job of covering it, some scenes could lose their impact if you were not aware of previous events. Also the side missions add so much to this game, in fact to get the true ending all side missions must be completed including the Riddler collect-a-thon. Luckily there are actual rewards at the end of it not just pointless pats on the back. There are also some great story elements in these sections that need to be completed as they are very satisfying. Arkham Knight takes place in Gotham City, which unlike all the Batman movies is completely original and very much provides character to this game. The architecture is a mix of new skyscrapers and old world structures, crumbling waterfronts and dilapidated neighbourhoods. As you glide through the city it gives Gotham a sense of age, a place that screams inequality and uncontrolled crime. Arkham Knight is one of the first games to come out exclusively for the new generation of consoles. And it shows; everything has a coat of polish that was unseen in the last generation. As you glide around Gotham city you see the insane amount of detailing applied to everything. This is easily one of the most visually stunning games I have played. The particle physics from smoke and destroyed concrete truly set the bar. Character models have insane amounts of detailing allowing a player to identify the faction that the enemy belongs to from across the map. As you fight against the many enemies of the Batman, you utilize a large arsenal of tricks and visceral hand to hand combat. The stealth sec-

Arkham Knight opens up the possibility in many ways, allowing you to trick your enemies with a voice synthesizer or blow up a generator. My personal favourite is to hack a drone and listen to the confusion as the enemies panic as their technology targets them. Of course there are the normal takedowns, the silent takedowns and the inverted takedowns. The newest fear takedowns allow you to target multiple enemies and cause panic in the rest of the crowd. They are also extremely visceral and the most satisfying to get right. Hand to hand combat, which has always been impactful, fluid, simple yet with surprising depth, has had much more brought in. Combat is still two buttons; one button to strike another to counter. Now environmental weapons and assisted takedowns add much more to each fight. You’re also encouraged to think before you strike as various enemy types can easily turn the battle against you. Combat still flows as you fly from enemy to enemy striking them, but now you need to be certain that your next strike does not spell your end. It’s much more tactical in that regard. The newest gameplay mechanic is the Batmobile. While many have stated their hate for this tank/car/APC hybrid I unabashedly love the thing. It adds so many gameplay elements and adds another way to solve puzzles. The tank portions are fun and break up other sections, although having to hold down one button the entire time the tank mode is engaged does get annoying. Overall this is a satisfying end to a trilogy that introduces new ideas while reinforcing core elements from previous games. It wraps up the story from previous games while adding new ones that reach a satisfying conclusion. Batman Arkham Knight is a game that not only defines what a great superhero game can be, it also sets a very high bar of what games this generation are capable of achieving. If you are looking for a story driven game that delivers a one-two punch then Batman Arkham Knight is worth a look.
