A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride, And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank; Misfortune seemed his lot; He got into a drifted bank, And we, we got upsot. Baba’s Shortbread Cookies

Ingredients

1 1/2 cup butter (not margarine) 1 1/2 cups brown sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp. cream of tartar 1 tsp. baking soda 3 1\2 cups flour

Beet buttered sugar well. Add eggs and beat again. Mix together the last three ingredients and add to butter mixture.

Use cookie cutter and top with red or green cherries before baking.

Bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes only until light brown. Delicious!

When did Christmas lights become so popular?

Holiday lights are now everywhere come the holiday season. Private homeowners tend to hang the holiday lights outside their homes around Thanksgiving weekend and keep them up through New Year’s Day. Though it might seem like a tradition without a deep history, decorating a Christmas tree with electric lights can be traced all the way back to the nineteenth century. In 1882, Edward Johnson, who was a friend and colleague of the man who invented light bulbs, Thomas Edison, replaced candles, which had traditionally been used to briefly light Christmas trees, with light bulbs. But at the time of Johnson’s innovation, the high cost and relative infancy of light bulbs ensured the idea did not catch on. And though United States President Grover Cleveland used electric

lights to illuminate a Christmas tree in the White House in 1895, it would be another eight years before General Electric would begin selling Christmas light kits. Those kits cost $12 in 1903, which equates to several hundred dollars today. The first outdoor Christmas light shows started to become popular in the 1920s, and this is the same time when commercial sales of Christmas lights picked up. In the 1960s, GE’s decision to begin manufacturing Christmas lights overseas helped reduce the price of outdoor lights even further, thus paving the way for the tradition of decorating home exteriors with string lights during the holiday season to take a firm hold. And that tradition remains wildly popular today

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. They never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say: “Rudolph with your nose so bright, won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

Christmas carols can be heard far and wide from Thanksgiving weekend through Christmas Day. “The 12 Days of Christmas” is one of the most recognizable carols, and for good reason, as the popular song can trace its history back several centuries. Researchers have traced the earliest printed version of the poem on which the song is based all the way back to 1780. That’s three years before the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the American Revolutionary War. The song has long been suspected to have been a way for Catholics in Britain to teach their children the catechism, as the 1700s was a controversial period for Catholicism in the coun-

try. However, no documentary evidence exists in support of that theory, and many historians feel it is inaccurate. Others indicate that, while 1780 is likely the first time the poem was printed, the poem is likely much older than that, with origins potentially in France or Scotland. What is known is that the version many people recognize today, namely in song form, can be traced to the early twentieth century, when English singer and composer Frederic Austin first popularized the melody for the song. · 1 orange sliced

· 1 cup cranberries

· 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds

· 2 cup cranberry juice

· 2 cups orange juice

1.Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher or punch bowl over ice. If using a really large punch bowl, you can double the recipe.

GRANDMA GOT RUN OVER BY A REINDEER

Grandma got run over by a reindeer. Walking home from our house Christmas eve. You can say there’s no such thing as Santa, But as for me and grandpa we believe. She’d been drinking too much eggnog, And we begged her not to go. But she forgot her medication, and she Staggered out the door into the snow. When we found her Christmas morning, At the scene of the attack, She had hoof-prints on her forehead, And incriminating Claus marks on her back.

Dill Fish Crackers

Farr, Vegreville

1 (1 ounce) packet ranch mix

1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoon dried dill weed 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 12-16 ounces cheesy crackers

Instructions

Preheat oven to 250°F

In a large bowl, mix together ranch, dill, garlic and oil. Toss crackers in seasonings and spread in a rimmed baking sheet.

Bake for 15 minutes, stirring half way through. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container. These make great homemade gifts for the holiday season.

6 hard-cooked eggs, peeled

1/4 cup mayonnaise

1/2 teaspoon Dill Weed

1/2 teaspoon Ground Mustard

1/2 teaspoon Parsley Flakes

1/4 teaspoon Salt

1 small dill pickle , thinly sliced

· Slice eggs in half lengthwise. Remove yolks; place in small bowl. Mash yolks with fork or potato masher.

- Stir in mayonnaise, dill weed, mustard, parsley and seasoned salt until smooth and creamy. Spoon or pipe yolk mixture into egg white halves. Top each with a pickle slice.

- Refrigerate 1 hour or until ready to serve

FROSTY THE SNOW MAN

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head he began to dance around. O, Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me.

How to care for fresh holiday wreaths

Majestic Christmas trees garner the lion’s share of the decorative fanfare when the holidays arrive. Trees may be the focal points of holiday decor, but the humble wreath adorning the front door is the first decoration guests are likely to see when visiting a home.

Wreaths may need some care to maintain their beauty all month long. Here are some tips to help holiday wreaths last as long as possible.

Choose a wreath wisely When shopping for a wreath, choose freshly cut greenery that you assemble yourself; otherwise, look for wreaths made from freshly cut boughs with their foliage intact. Make sure not too many needles or leaves are falling off. Heavily decorated, preassembled wreaths may be convenient, but ornaments can make it challenging to give the wreath the moisture it needs to survive.

Moisture/water

Access to moisture will help to keep the wreath fresh. While a Christmas tree trunk may sit inside of a stand filled with water, wreaths require a little ingenuity. According to the wreath and garland retailer Club Botanic, if you will not be hanging a freshly purchased wreath right away, keep it in a plastic liner in a cool, dark place to help it retain moisture. Just make sure you don’t seal that liner closed. Before hang-

ing, lay the wreath in a couple of inches of water for about an hour or up to a day so that the cut stems can soak up water.

Once the wreath is hanging on a door or elsewhere, spritz it with water every few days to prevent it from drying out.

Location, location, location

Where you hang the wreath is key to its longevity. Wreaths and garlands hung indoors likely won’t last as long as those hung outside, advises the floral retailer Bouqs.com. Evergreen boughs tend to require a colder climate to thrive, and indoor heat can prematurely zap moisture from the wreath. Using a humidifier indoors or misting the wreath may help.

It’s probably best to hang fresh wreaths outdoors, but avoid direct sunlight, which can dry out the greenery. Slightly shaded spots are best. If your front door is bathed in full sun for hours, hang an artificial wreath here instead of a fresh one.

Maintain airflow

Another factor that can affect the wreath’s longevity is an ample flow of oxygen. Wreaths tend to last much longer when kept on an outer door, indicates Harbor Farm in Ellsworth, ME. Wreaths sandwiched between a front door and a storm door will probably perish faster due to lack of oxygen.

Following these tips can help keep fresh wreaths as vibrant as the day they were brought home.
