Senior drama rips into Roarin’ 20’s Rosanne Fortier If rehearsed well, a play can hold people in laughter and intrigue. VCHS Drama 10/30 vacuumed their creativity to the max when they presented a smooth and professional production of ‘I Don’t Have a Clue’ by Craig Sodaro on January 15 and 16 at Vegreville Composite High School. The setting and costumes were from the 20’s. The play was a mystery/comedy about Carol Robinson, a quirky hostess hosting a murder-mystery dinner party for six friends. Between Carol’s moody maid who served the meal and odd behaviour from Carol, such as refusing

entry to invited guests unless they word fishnets and fedoras, there isn’t much room to wonder why at the same party there’s a stranger hiding in a window and that cops are involved. Period references to the

glorified gangster time period known as the Roarin’ 20’s include servings of Capone Caviar and Ma Barker biscuits and the lesser known figure of the 20’s, travelling vacuum salesmen. Ultimately the hammer drops when a wad of cash discovered in the trash has two gangsters in tow, either demanding the money or vowing to serve up revenge (a dish commonly served cold, which is dreadful at any dinner party). As for the solution, well, if the ending sucked, the vacuum was to blame. Following the performance, students presented flowers while they embraced Mrs. Tracy Cook, Senior Drama Instructor, for all her dedicated work. “Thank you for putting up with us for six years.” students said. The cast included Justine Makowecki as Carol Robinson, Hannah Adams as Annette Robinson, April Siggelkow-Corky

God is Rev. Michael Schumacher’s truest valentine Rosanne Fortier Valentine’s Day can mean love that is reflected in different mirrors. Rev.

Michael Schumacher who has served St. Martin’s parish and two other churches since August 2013 is a priest who has an

aura of joy and holiness. The reason for this is his love for God and mankind. “My upbringing was very good, I had a stable home. My Mom stayed home to take care of us. I grew up for a few years in the city and then we moved to an acreage which I really enjoyed because there was a lot of space to play in.” Rev. Schumacher said.

“Then I changed my mind and pursued the vocation. It’s beautiful to be a priest because I have a life that is committed to working and living around God. My life is always connected to God. It’s also beautiful to meet people on a continual basis on a deep, personal level because you are working with people when they have their greatest joys and tragedies

“My parents weren’t super religious but we did attend mass every Sunday.” “I first had my calling to be a priest in my third year of college. It was like someone had a rope tied around my heart and I could feel a thug. Yes, God couldn’t leave me alone. It was strong but not forceful.” Schumacher said. “I didn’t enjoy this feeling in the beginning because my faith in God was growing but not great. I was away from the church for under a year and just went back to church to pray. I don’t know why I left; I think I just drifted away because I found more important things to do. I made excuses. I had a motorcycle and when the snow fell, I said I didn’t have a car to go to church.”

in life. I can deepen their faith in God and help them know Him and come to joy and fulfillment in their lives this way. This vocation has a real, authentic quality to it. “One of the biggest challenges is looking after three communities with limited time and ability to address the needs of everybody. “I don’t think about not being able to get married anymore. It is something you have to surrender and accept. This took time. I did this with trust in God. If God is calling you to enter this vocation, he will give you satisfaction in your heart with it. Your family is the church. “Marriage was a bigger question when I first received the calling because I was in the middle of a

serious relationship. I spoke to another priest and he told me to live my life, finish my schooling and deal with my relationship, put the vocation on the back burner and leave it there and then see what happens. I did that. Eventually, the relationship ended and I realized how much I wanted to be a priest and needed to address it. “I would definitely recommend priesthood to others. It’s challenging but it’s worth it. It’s a wonderful opportunity to know God, you and others. It’s

beautiful to see people grow in their faith, heal and come to God. This is the greatest gift anyone can witness. Then you discover that the Catholic Church is rich with a wealth of knowledge, understanding and there is no way to describe the depths of it. It’s a means of a beautiful encounter with God. “I really like Vegreville. St. Martin’s parish has people in it who are very welcoming, helpful and caring.” Schumacher said.

Patient’s Comfort Society’s goal Enid Theophile Submitted Vegreville Long Term Care Patient’s Comfort Society has a goal. Our goal is to complete the purchase of electric motors for all the lifts in each of the 60 rooms of the Vegreville Care Center. The cost of each motor is approximately $2,000 and these lifts with motors will assist the staff in comfortably moving clients from chair, bed, and bathroom. With the generous donations from residents and families of the Vegreville Care Center, Vegreville Hospitals’ Auxiliary and Vegreville Royal Purple, the Society purchased three motors. As a result of personal donations and memorials for 2013-14, the Patient’s Comfort Society made many other purchases as requested by the staff,

which the facility cannot receive through government funding. The articles purchased include: Four DVD’s on how to care for Alzheimer’s residents ($173), 1 flatscreen TV($533), 1 oximetry machine ($509), 2 slings ($680), 1 oxygen concentrator ($1,800), two oxygen regulators ($400), 3-blood pressure cuffs ($60), 5 stethoscopes ($500), and Christmas gifts for 60 residents ($1,800). The total amount for the above purchases is $12,455. Patient’s Comfort Society is grateful for the assistance from the community and families, as these donations enabled the Society to assist in providing comfort for the residents of the Vegreville Care Center.

Need A Legal Tax Shelter? C O N T R I B U T E T O A N RRSP

• Beat the deadline: The deadline for making a contribution to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) that can be deducted on your tax return is March 1st, of the following year. • Know your limit: The maximum annual dollar limit for RRSP contributions in 2013 is $23,820. You would need to earn more than $132,334 in 2013 in order to contribute the maximum amount. • Over the limit rules: Contributions up to $2,000 in excess of RRSP limits can be made without being subject to a penalty tax. • Spousal support: A spouse in a higher tax bracket may consider income-splitting opportunities for the future by contributing to a spousal RRSP. However, the contributing spouses are limited to their own personal deduction limits. • Contribution room: RRSP contributions can be carried forward if claimants foresee being in a higher tax bracket in future years. This will help maximize the tax deduction. • Age restrictions: If you turn 71 during the calendar year, you must convert your RRSPs into a form of retirement income before the end of this year or be taxed on the Fair Market Value of the plan. Be sure to discuss your options with a tax professional. • RRSP withdrawals: With few exceptions, RRSPs withdrawals are taxed. However, there are federal programs allowing contributors to borrow from their RRSP for putting a down payment on a first house or financing education. The special rules and restrictions should be discussed with a tax professional A tax professional at H&R Block can talk about other credits and deductions that may affect you.To find the office nearest you visit www.hrblock.ca

Parent Link Centre celebrates 10 years! Submitted Parent Link Centres (PLCs) in Alberta are turning 10 years old! PLC’s are a provincial network of family resource centres offering five core services: early childhood development programs, parent education programs (including Triple P-Positive Parenting Program), family support services (such as community kitchens

and toy lending libraries), information and referral services to connect families to other resources in each community, and developmental screening (using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire) to screen children for early developmental difficulties. see Parent Link on page 8

EMPLOYMENT

February 9, 2015 Continued from Page 7

- Parent Link Alberta’s first PLCs were established in 2004-2005 to provide accessible, affordable, community-based programs and resources for families with children under six. Vegreville Parent Link Centre opened their doors to the community in 2006. In their 10-year provincial history, PLC’s have increased the number of Albertans served from approximately 6,000 to over 94,000 and reach out to 180 communities! Over the years Parent Link Centres in Vegreville and surrounding communities have provided services for local families that have really made a difference. When asked, one Vegreville parent stated “My first experience came a few weeks before my move to Vegreville, a move I was nervous about. I instantly felt the warmth of our community! Parent Link has helped our family build a little village of people who are interested in and support our large family. We would have been lost without it.” Another parent remarked “(PLC) Provides (free) programming and helps me to make connections with other parents” Vegreville Parent Link Centre really does “link” families in our community.

An Ode to our Mounties An ode to our Mounties from coast to coast, Away down in Newfoundland Where great rivers flow Through the vast prairies

Where night creatures prowl To the high lonely hills where coyotes howl. Then there’s the cities in Greater Alberta, Where there’s trouble no matter where we go, Someone calls the Royal Canadian Mounted Police The robber, the bad one gets out of the way After he’s let bullets go astray. This ode and prayer of grief to the Mounties Is beyond the grief I feel For I do not know when justice will change For I am just a person and all I say Is “WHAT AN AWFUL SHAME” - Pauline Cuthbert

As you know, Groundhog Day is a holiday in Canada traditionally celebrated every year on February 2nd. Canadians organize festivals and celebrations dedicated to the groundhog, which predicts how long and how cold the winter is going to be this year. The tradition to celebrate Groundhog Day is relatively new for Ukraine, it started in 2004. Just as in Canada, in Ukraine on that day a groundhog is

entrusted to predict the weather for the rest of winter – if its cloudy on that day and a groundhog emerges from his burrow, then spring is going to come early this year; if it’s sunny and a groundhog emerges from his burrow but goes back into it immediately because he gets afraid of his shadow, then winter will continue for at least six more weeks. Today there are two groundhogs in Ukraine are honoured to predict the weather on that day – groundhog Tymko who lives on the territory of V. Karazin Kharkiv National University and groundhog Myshko who lives in Lviv Ecological Center. It’s interesting to know that last year both these groundhogs made same predictions about the weather – both Tymko and Myshko got afraid of their shadows what meant that winter is going to be cold and long, and spring will come late. In fact, last year’s winter was really very cold and prolonged, and spring came only in April.

people. No matter where we come from, our connection to family is important. Children need this connection to help them build a healthy sense of identity. To know where they come from. To feel loved and accepted. To belong. That truth should always be at the heart of all decisions that relate to a child’s emotional, physical and social wellbeing. It’s a truth I have come to know through my own

personal and professional experience as a father, a former educator, and in my current world of children’s services: Children need lasting and significant relationships to carry them throughout life. But what happens when a parents are unable to provide such stability and it becomes necessary to bring a child into care? When that happens, the need to preserve family connections is part of the planning for that child’s future. A caseworker first considers a “kinship” placement--that is, an extended family member who can provide the child a safe and loving home. Loving kinship caregivers help maintain a child’s connection to family and community. North Central Alberta Child and Family Services recently celebrated a marvelous example of the power of

kinship care in the close-knit community of Alexis Nakota Sioux First Nation. Many members of that community are providing kinship care to their nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. As a result, children who were are unable to live with their immediate family are now living with extended family and those important family ties are being preserved. I’ve also come to the conclusion that sometimes it is less about genetics and more about love. It’s about who cares about us and who helps shape our life and memories.

Parents, siblings, cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, close friends—even pets—are part of what comprises a family. And the importance of that family to a child’s healthy development cannot be overstated. It’s a concept so important that “Family Day” is officially observed in many jurisdictions across Canada as a holiday to honour and celebrate families. For us in Alberta, it’s the third Monday of February—a day for setting aside some time to be with our loved ones. On Family Day 2015, I wish you and your family—whatever its shape and size—not just a good day of memories, but a lifetime of them. MEMORIAM

In Loving Memory Of Marshall Charuk August 20, 1920 – February 5, 2014 A year has passed Since God called you away But still we miss you Each and every day. What we wouldn’t give to take one more walk Or just quietly sit and have one more talk. Miss you Dad and always will For though you’re gone we love you still. Raymond, Gloria, Christine and Families

HOOK, Winnie November 13, 1920 – February 9, 2009 In loving memory of our dear mother and grandmother, Winnie Hook. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, and very dear. Always a smile, instead of a frown, Always a hand, when one is down, Always true, thoughtful and kind, Wonderful memories she left behind. Softly the leaves of memory fall. Gently we gather, treasure them all, Some may forget now that you are gone, We will remember no matter how long. We miss you Mom, You were one of a kind. Always remembered and dearly missed, Albina, Daniel and Arthur

ADAMS, Lucky When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remembered them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind… Loved by John, Stanley & Betty

Family Day 2015 will be Fantastic in Vegreville! FCSS Submitted Alberta has been observing Family Day since its inception in 1990. Premier Getty said it was important for all Albertans to take time for their families, and that this holiday would emphasize the importance of family values. Several years ago, Vegreville & District Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) started to lay the foundation to celebrate Family Day by creating an event that provided fun activities that the family could do together. As each year passed, the event grew and more community members became involved. With this collaboration came new and exciting ideas, more people to deliver the activities and provide the resources needed to make everything a success!

This year boasts nothing less than continuing to build on what has happened in the past. The Family Day 2015 planning committee consists of a representative from the Town of Vegreville, the Count y of Minburn, Vegreville & District FCSS, Parent Link Center, Recreation, Culture and Faci l it ies, Veg rev i l le Centennial Library, Perogies & Jam, The Senior Citizen’s Sunshine Club, Vegreville Transportation Ser vices Society, Vegreville Bowling Lanes, KidSport, M.O.D.E.L. Project and The Rotary Club. Everyone shares the goal of providing an event that fosters the opportunity for families to feel connected to the community by having fun with one another in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Heather Siggelkow, FCSS Community Programmer, stands with Derek Christensen of Vegreville’s Rotary chapter. The service club, along with many clubs and organizations, like Valard and the Vegreville Agricultural Society, are helping to keep the tradition of family fun strong on family day in Vegreville. Local activities will be taking place throughout the day in Vegreville, and families are encouraged to take part. (Photo Submitted)

With all these groups coming to the table, Family Day on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015 cannot help but to be a terrific event! It has been a priority to be able to offer the majority of activities at no cost! Attendees may only need their wallet if they would like to take in the pancake breakfast (silver collection to the food bank) or the concession. The free activities are made available through special donations from Town and County Council, Parent Link Center, The Rotary Club, The Vegreville Agricultural Society and Valard Construction.
