Rosanne Fortier The Rotary Club has been a major contributor to St. Joseph’s General Hospital. Through their fundraising efforts, Rotary Club of Vegreville donated great financial support for the renovation of the care rooms for the hospital’s Palliative Care suite. Terry Kubin spearheaded the fundraising efforts to renovate the whole suite and Vantage Builders Ltd. did the renovations.

Alex Fortin gets serious about comedy Rosanne Fortier Alex Fortin was the Stand-up Comedian at Heather Curling Club’s Giggles Comedy Night on March 28. He performed with the main feature comedian, Lars Callieou.
Lars has a comedy special currently airing on the Comedy Network and his comedy radio show was nominated for a 2011 Canadian Comedy award. The audience at Giggles Comedy Night was
impressed with both comedians. For people who wonder what life’s like for a person involved in the comedy world, Alex gave a glimpse into the profession. “I knew from a very young
age that I enjoyed making people laugh. The first real memory I have is from grade 5. A friend and I pulled up our pants really high and started acting “nerdy.” The whole class including teacher started laughing and I felt like the coolest kid in school.” Alex said. “Once I sort of learned that making people laugh

could get me noticed and even make me friends I wanted to do it all the time. I started taking drama class in grade 8 and followed through with it until the end of high school. I then started doing stand-up a few months after turning 19.” “Growing up I would watch Just for Laughs on TV and think to myself “man that would be a cool
job.” The day I actually decided to pursue stand-up comedy was after seeing Daniel Tosh (one of my favorite comedians) live here in Edmonton, so I guess he was a pretty big influence.” Alex said about the people things that influenced him. “I spend a lot of time in bars doing open-mic shows or at the comedy club which can make for some pretty late nights. I also spend a lot of time traveling. 11hour drives for a single show aren’t totally uncommon. I spend most of my free time watching standup on TV, writing new jokes, or listening to podcasts. Stand- up is a lot more time consuming than I thought it would be. “It’s definitely a unique experience. It’s kind of neat to have a whole group of people’s attention for no other reason than you’re the one with the microCONTINUED TO PAGE 23

Easter egg hunt winners
This year winners of the Vegreville Insurance Easter Egg Hunt are: Keaton, Rylee, and Devyn Heisler. Keaton read the clue on the online edition of the Vegreville News Advertiser early Saturday morning. Once he read the clue, he knew where to find it. Keaton and his sisters woke Mom & Dad up. They went to where they thought the Egg was hidden. They found it under the sandbags of the SNAP Fitness Sandwich Sign. Dad said they have been looking every year for the egg for several years with help from Mom & Dad. They have been close in the past years, arriving minutes after the egg had been found. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all that participated and good luck next year. (Vegreville Insurance/Submitted)

Who manages the paid staff? Lisa Topilko Volunteer Services Coordinator
If you are a volunteer board member of a nonprof it group or charity, who manages your paid staff ? For example, who manages the coaches or instructors for d a n c e /s p o r t s groups? Who manages the paid staff at VegMin L ea r n i ng S oc iet y ? W ho manages the employees for the Pysanka Festival or the Agricult ura l Societ y Fair? The answer to these questions is that it depends on the board and the organization. Some boards employ one person, and that paid employee typically reports to the board chairperson. Some non-prof it b oa rd s employ more than one person so the volunteer board then needs to determine w h ic h employee is responsible for Human Resources. This could be the (paid)
Director or the Manager of the society, or the paid designate of the board. Volunteer board members need to be aware of who amongst them is responsible for the paid employees, and to respect the roles and responsibilities of that supervisor. It is inappropriate for volunteer board members to take it upon themselves to speak to staff about HR issues when there is someone pa id or appointed by the board to complete those tasks. It’s always a good idea for people to see their job description in writing. Then ever yone knows who is doing what, and also what they are not doing. If and when a new task comes along, the board and the staff can determine together who will take on this new task. As a VALID board member years ago, I knew that privacy for
ever yone associated with the organization was paramount, and that paid staff were doing a good job of obeying Freedom of I n f o r m a t io n and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) laws for the society. As a current Veg M i n volu nteer board member, I am totally conf ident that the staff we hire are 10 0 % respectful of everyone’s right to conf identialit y, including my own. It is also typically the job of paid staff to screen the volunteers, getting the right people into the right jobs within the society, especially if the paid staff is to manage said volunteers. Some volunteer boards work in an advisor y position, and some are governance/management boards therefore it’s important to know the roles and responsibilities of these boards and how each volunteer and each paid staff
member f it into the organization. Training and help is available for volunteer boards so they can 1) develop job

descriptions for each boa rd member, 2) recruit new board members who are qualif ied to address the needs of
the society, 3) hire an Executive Director, 4) meet the Financia l Requirements for nonprofit boards, and more!

St. Mary’s students try hand at humanitarianism
On February 19, Holy Trinity’s Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League presented a cheque for $800 to St. Mary’s students. (Left to right) Elsie Kawulych, President of Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League presented the cheque
to St. Mary’s students McKinley Makowecki, Katelyn Salisbury, Amy and Rachel Stefaniuk and Principal-Mrs. Tanya Thiessen. With the help of the UCWL, the group traveled to Anaheim, California for the Religious Education Congress Youth Day on March 12. While stateside, the girls volunteered at Holy Name of Jesus School, an inner city elementary school where all students live below the poverty line. They spent the day working with kids through the reading mentorship program, and then went off for an evening volunteering at the Midnight Mission serving dinner to over 1000 people that live on Skid Row. “This was an incredible social justice opportunity for our students. Not only [did they travel] to learn about their faith, but they also lived their faith by participating in humanitarian work.” Thiessen explained. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)

Benoit defends Conservative record on Veteran supports There is an increasing amount of blatantly false information being spread by Opposition Members of Parliament about our Government’s record for our Veterans. The reality is that our Government has invested unprecedented amounts into benefits and services, while addressing the modern day needs of our Veterans as they change and evolve. Our Government has spent almost $30 billion towards delivering Veterans benefits,
programs and supports. That’s an increase of $5 billion since we took office in 2006. We’ve also trained staff in almost 600 Service Canada locations to assist Veterans with the support they need. Today, Veterans who are in receipt of at least one benefit from Veterans Affairs have access to an average of $5,900 each month in support, in addition to benefits such as house cleaning, snow clearing, college or universit y re-training,
medicine and rehabilitation. Additionally, we’ve made sure that the most critically injured Veterans are more fully supported. In fact, when combined with a military pension, some of Canada’s seriously injured Veterans can receive $8,000 or more per month in financial benefits. Our Government has worked hard to create job opportunities for Veterans. Through our Helmets to Hardhats and the Hire a Veteran programs, we’re
successfully partnering with the private sector to connect Veterans to available jobs. We are also working on getting legislation passed to put our men and women in uniform to the front of the line for federal public sector jobs through the Veterans Hiring Act. We have also improved Veterans’ health services. We’ve more than doubled the number of counseling sessions available for Veterans and their families, created an online caregiver
tool to help those who are dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and are hiring more peer support counselors. This is in addition to the recent announcement that will bolster frontline mental health locations to 25 across Canada, up from a mere few before 2006. Soldiers currently serving also have access to reliable mental health support services. In fact, when compared to our NATO allies, the Canadian Forces already has the highest ratio
of mental health care workers to soldiers. Our Government stands tall on our record, but we’re not afraid to identify and address the gaps that may still exist. The Opposition should stop playing politics with these important issues and stop voting against virtually every measure we have put forth to improve Veterans’ quality of life. - Leon Benoit, MP Vegreville - Wainwright

To spray or not to spray Agri-News The decision on whether to spray or not can be a diff icult one for producers, said an
A lber ta Agricu lt ure and Rural Development (ARD) specialist, and the wrong decision can have serious f inancial
consequences. “Today’s farm business managers wear many different hats, and mycolog y and entomology may not be their area of expertise,” said Nevin Rosaasen, resea rch economist, A R D, E d monton . “The decision to spray a fungicide or insecticide can be complex, and last minute choices at spray ing time stand a good chance of missing the mark.” Determining the economic t h reshold when it pays to spray
is not as cut and dried as a simple insect count, a speci f ied severit y of infection rate or basing the decision solely on the weather forecast, said Rosaasen. W hile a l l of these variables are important in making the most informed decision, he says the decision should ultimately be made based on prof itabilit y, and the best way to determine that is by using a partial budget. “First, determine you r fa rm specif ic econom ic cost of spraying the pest that you are trying to con-

trol. Determining your costs is the left hand side of the ledger of a partia l budget and should include not only the cost of the pesticide, but all variable costs including fuel, time, labour of both the sprayer operator and water hauler. Fixed costs include depreciation on the sprayer, c hem ic a l ha nd ler, water truck, tanks, etc. Divide these by all the acres that you spray over the estimated lifetime of these assets to give you a rough f i xed cost per acre. Knowing what it costs you to spray is essential before evaluating the potential benef it, loading up the sprayer and hitting the f ield.” On the direct benef it side of the partial budget, evaluate how the decision to spray may affect yield. “Factors to consider include the expected yield savings
and price of the crop you are protecting (use realistic yield estimates and conservative estimates for price). You may also want to net off the crop lost from compaction and tramping - roughly two per cent crop loss on 100 foot booms. The net of these gives insight into the ‘direct’ prof itability of spraying pests. If it is negative, here is where you stop. If you have def ined a threshold, you would know where you wou ld start.” However, Rosaasen said that even when the numbers are right, there are other considerations. “ Understanding that your f ield is a complex ecosystem, that, when shocked with a fungicide or insectic ide, may have unintended consequences on benef icial insects or fungi and subsequent infestation levels, is key. W hen infestat ion rates and benef its of spray ing out weigh the costs, producers need to act to protect their prof itabilit y. However, when you f ind that deciding to spray or not to spray is based on costs and benef its being nearly even, let t ing nat u re r un its cou rse may have longer-term net benef its for your integrated pest management and ultimately, your l o n g e r-t e r m prof itabilit y.”

Kids These Days – the Power of Community Dr. David Rideout Some kids don’t become elite athletes, no matter how hard they try. But that’s okay; there are plenty of other ways for children to achieve selfesteem and confidence. Some new mothers don’t have a relative nearby who can teach her how to cope with a fussy baby or how to relate to a child in a way that will ensure healthy childhood development. Some children need help conquering life’s challenges—from milestones like walking, talking and reading—to knowing how to control their emotions and make lasting friends. We all need support, but sometimes we have to look beyond our own families to find it. And we usually don’t have to look very far, because our communities are f illed with caring people and organizations dedicated to helping children and families reach their full potential. Across our region are countless communit y organizations and volunteers who fortify the vulnerable people among them. Many communities have a provincial Family and Community Support Services Centre that offers a range of programs that support healthy development and strong pa rent-chi ld interactions. As well, Parent Link Centres can help with parenting education, early childhood development, family support, developmental screening, and referrals to services within the community. That might include food banks, toy lending libraries, language or reading tutors, Big Brothers/Big Sisters or home visitation programs where a nurse can help a new mom care for her newborn baby or reduce risk factors that may arise from parenting alone. Some places even have a community kitchen where people can share costs of groceries and cook meals together. Or hot lunch programs to ensure no child goes hungry at school. Or fundraising campaigns, clothing donations, book lending and sports equipment swaps. Or Native Friendship Centres that open doors to cultural awareness and support for Aboriginal children
and families. Sports organizations prov ide recreationa l opportunities for youth with their peers. Pairing older kids with younger kids can provide opportunities for leadership. And many local businesses chip in with contributions to sports activities in their communit y. Sometimes larger corporations con-
tribute locally too, such as Canadian Tire with its JumpStart program dedicated to removing financial barriers so kids from ages 4-18 have the opportunit y to get involved in sports. They do this by assisting with costs associated with registration, equipment or transportation in over 70 different activities. All those measures
make big differences for kids by helping address problems that can put them and their families at risk. Addressing these issues can then lessen the need for more intrusive child intervention services. It may also mean that children have more adults in their life so they can build relationships with trusting mentors. And have what
every child needs: someone who’s cheering for them. The real power of communities is that they create environments where the youth of today are empowered to be successful—and in turn grow up to be parents who create healthy environments for the next generation of youth. And so on.
Dr. David Rideout is a former teacher, principal, and school board superintendent. He is a father of two adult sons and the Regiona l Director of North Central Region Child and Family Services. Feedback or comments are welcome and can be sent via email to david. rideout@gov.ab.ca.

Andrew Lions donate to Andrew School Andrew School Submitted Once again, the Andrew Lions Club graciously donated funds to Andrew School. $1000.00 went to the Athletics Department and another $1722.00 went to the Grade 5 & 6 Drumheller Trip scheduled for the spring of 2016.
Students fundraise for this Edutour two-day overnight field trip held at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. The trip involves a guided hike, three hands-on workshops, gallery exploration, swimming, an auditorium program, a visit to Reptile World, and sleeping with the dinosaurs! This amazing donation will
assist greatly with their fundraising efforts and was made available through the sale of Community Calendars. The Athletics Department will use their donation to offset the costs of sports fees. Presenting the cheque on February 20th to Athletics Director, Cory Kokotailo, was Andrew Lions Club treasurer, Helen Tymchyshyn.

ing the date of Easter. That’s why we have the same situation with different dates of celebrating Christmas by Catholic and Orthodox churches. This year Orthodox
Easter is celebrated on Sunday, April 12. On the eve of this day Orthodox families gather together to bake a special Easter bread called paska, and to colour and decorate boiled eggs. These products are mandatory to celebrate Orthodox Easter. Because of the fact that Easter is always celebrated at the end of Great Lent, which lasts seven weeks, people are preparing lots of meat dishes which were prohibited during the Lent. On Easter Sunday, early in the morning people are going to church on holiday service. They bring baskets with paska and coloured eggs there. After the service there is a ritual of blessing people and the food by sprinkling them with holy water. After visiting church people are going home for an Easter lunch. There is a tradition to begin an Easter lunch with tasting paska and eggs, and only after that all other dishes. During the lunch people are remembering the loved ones who are already gone, and wishing each other good health for the next year. So, Happy Orthodox Easter!

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, I've been renting a house from an elderly gentleman for the last three years. Then, a few months ago when he passed away, his three daughters inherited the house. While they have been very nice to me, they never seem to agree on anything. Each one seems to think she is the one in charge. First, it was whether or not to raise my rent. Then, it was whether to sell the house or keep renting it. It appears I'm stuck in a family squabble. I was thinking of moving, but a quick look through some classified ads told me that my rent is pretty reasonable. However, last week I found out that the electric bill hasn't been paid for the past two months. Electric is supposed to be included in my rent! Now who do I call? Can you guys help before I'm in the dark?
• • • Cash: First, we might suggest that you invest in a flashlight and some candles. Otherwise, you might be going to bed earlier than usual. Carry: For three sisters who battle to be in charge, it seems none of them actually take control. It's bad

enough to argue with your own brother or sister, but it's even tougher to be caught in someone else's sibling rivalry. Cash: Since you haven't mentioned a lease, we assume you are renting month to month. In that case, maintaining friendly relations with your new landlords is in your best interest. Carry: However, that doesn't mean you have to tolerate their family squabbles. Your first concern is to keep the electric on. Cash: Contact one of them, preferably the one you get along with best, and explain the situation. Since their father just passed away, the sisters may be unaware of the
electric bill issue. Carry: Once you have the electric squared away, it's time to play game show host and settle the "Family Feud". Ask them who you should talk to regarding the house and then use that person as your starting point for future discussions. Cash: If you'd like to stay in the house, consider asking for a lease. Although renting month to month may have gone well in the past, having a written agreement with your new landlords could be beneficial, especially if your rent is affordable. Carry: And if your electric ever does go out, just invite them over for a candlelight dinner.

Sibling rivalry is nothing new, but one competition played out in the newspapers for over 40 years. Most of us have heard of the advice columns, "Ann Landers" and "Dear Abby", but few know that the authors were actually twin sisters. Born on July 4, 1918, Esther Pauline Friedman and Pauline Esther Friedman went on to be the dueling advice columnists. Ester, known as Eppie, won a contest to author the column, "Ask Ann Landers", for the Chicago SunTimes in 1955. Her sister's column, "Dear Abby", would later follow as a competing column.
When I moved into my new apartment, I soon realized it was easy to know about everyone in the building. Just as I set down my last moving box, my new neighbor knocked on the door. "Welcome to the neighborhood," she cheerfully exclaimed. Within minutes she began describing all of my neighbors to me. "If you need artwork," she said, "visit Bruce in apartment 202. He's an art dealer. If you need someone to do your taxes, call Janice in 304. She's an accountant. And if you get locked out, just go see Jeff next door." "Let me guess," I interjected. "He must be a locksmith?" "Not quite," she whispered. "He just got out of jail for breaking and entering." (Thanks to Christian M.)
Home Sweet Home You might think that people move from one place to another to find a newer or better residence. However, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 19% of people who move do so to upgrade their current home. The top rated reason people move, nearly 26%, is due to family related issues. Other reasons that topped the list were work related reasons (16%) and moving from an apartment to finally own a home (12%). •

ORGRODNICK, Clarence April 10, 2010 As time has passed, my heart still sore, As times moves on I miss you more; A loving husband, best friend, tender and kind. What beautiful memories you left behind. A million times I needed you, A million times I’ve cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. I have lost my soul’s companion, A life linked with my own; To have, to hold and then to part; Is the greatest sorrow of our heart. In quiet thoughts I live again, The days that used to be, How rich in kindness, love and care, How dear you were to me. Two hearts we were as one on Earth, Two souls that were entwined, My love for you was ever strong, Now live inside my mind I miss your smile, your laughter too I miss those days gone by I often sit and wonder About all the reasons why. A silent thought, a silent tear, Keeps your memory ever dear, Time takes away the edge of grief, But memory turns back every leaf. Love Sandra OGRODNICK, Clarence April 10, 2010 There is a family who misses you And finds time long since you went We think of you daily and hourly But try to be brave and content Tears that we shed are in silence And we breathe a sigh of regret For you were ours and we remember Though all the world forget. Money earned in a Tax Free Savings Account is not taxed on your return but make sure you understand the withdrawal rules so you don’t overcontribute. A tax professional at H&R Block can talk about other credits and deductions that may affect you. To find the office nearest you visit www.hrblock.ca
- Yes, NETFILE : This will be the first year first-time filers (other than immigrants) will be allowed to file using the Canada Revenue Agency’s NETFILE system. - Keep your receipts: A good rule of thumb is if you think it could be a tax deduction, keep the receipt and find out later. Trying to find or replace receipts later can be challenging. Remember, charitable donations, medical expenses and some transit passes are tax deductions. - Understand what you are claiming: Lots of people will offer tax advice but not all of it is true. You can only deduct employment expenses under specific circumstances. Make sure you do enough reading to understand what you can and can’t claim. And if you are unsure, you can always ask. - Look to the future: You may not be able to contribute too much to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) right away but you should make sure you report income and start building contribution room. This means you will be able to make larger deposits once you start earning more money. - Tax Free Savings: You do not report your deposits into a Tax Free Savings Account on your tax return.

SEVEC’s Spaghetti Supper paves the way to PEI
These are the students who will be venturing on the SEVEC program to Prince Edward Island from May 23-30. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Rosanne Fortier A trip can be the course to real-life learning. Mr. Roy Mills realized this when he coordinated another SEVEC (Society for Education Visits and Exchanges in Canada). On March 25, Vegreville Composite High School held a Spaghetti Supper to help fund this trip where 21 students will venture out to Prince Edward Island from May 23-30. If anyone couldn’t attend the supper but still want to contribute to this educational experience for students, VCHS will gladly accept donations of any amount.
There was quite a turn-out of satisfied customers at the SEVEC’s Spaghetti Supper on March 25 at Vegreville Composite High School. The students going on this exchange were very polite as they assisted in serving the supper. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)

phone. It can also be pretty intimidating. In the back of your head you know that if no one laughs it’s going to be a very long show. “Personally if something makes me laugh, whether I hear it on the news, or the radio, or even if it’s something I or one of my friends say in a conversation, I try to remember it or write it down. When I have some free time I take out my note book and look at the ideas I have. If I still think an idea is funny the second time I look at it I try and see if I can expand on it. Sometimes the ideas end up as a joke, sometimes they just kind of stay ideas for ever.” Alex said “If you have a craving for attention and you don’t mind traveling, absolutely. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had. You literally get paid to make people laugh. I still have trouble believing that I get to do this.” Alex replied when asked if he
would recommend this profession to others. “I think laughter has countless benefits. If you’re having a bad day and someone makes you laugh it makes your day a little better. We’ve all been in an argument and had someone make us laugh, and it
makes the argument seem so menial. I think laughter is very important; the more you laugh the happier you are, and the happier you are the better your life is going to be. The only downside is that it causes wrinkles, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.”
