36th annual Wendy Brook Concert continues its tune
The Fiddlin’ Kiddlins perform a song called, The Fiddlin’ Kiddlins by Calvin Vollrath. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Rosanne Fortier The name Wendy Brook is fictitious. The impact of the festival, however, is very real and lasting for
the performers. This festival took its start in 1926 and then it took a number of years off until Elizabeth Giebelhaus launched it again in 1979. “After 36 years, we have the second generations of participants. The Wendy Brook Festival keeps developing and growing. Two of the teachers who brought their class to the festival were themselves performers at previous festivals. Some of the

Tires slashed on Vegreville RCMP patrol unit RCMP Submitted
At some point between April 4 and April 8, two tires were slashed on an RCMP patrol unit by an unknown person(s). The patrol unit was parked in the parking lot of the RCMP Detachment at the time of the mischief. The RCMP is still investigating this incident and has examined the patrol unit and surrounding
area for DNA, as well as fingerprint and footprint evidence. Video footage of the area is also being reviewed. Vegreville RCMP would like to remind citizens that a fully functioning police vehicle is imperative to the safety of the community’s residents. A police vehicle’s primary use is to respond to emergency situations
and for other police related duties. This incident put the citizens of Vegreville and area at risk of not receiving a timely response to an emergency. Thankfully the damaged police vehicle was noticed during a routine inspection and not when its use was required to attend an emergency. Vegreville RCMP is asking the public with any information on this crime to contact the local detachment at 780-6322223 or Crimestoppers at 1-80 0-222-8477. Information will be kept confidential and you may qualify for a cash reward.
WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO RISK?

TAX TIPS FOR PARENTS WITH STUDENTS - Only students receive tuition receipts: Even if you paid the tuition, colleges and universities issue the T2202A Form to the student. The T2202A Form allows a student to claim tuition as well as the education and textbook credits. - Transfers are not automatic: The student is required to use their tuition and education tax credits to reduce their taxable income to zero. Once they have used the credits they need, they can either carry the balance forward to future years or transfer up to $5,000 to a parent, grandparent or spouse.
- Calculating transfers: If the student did require some of their education credits to reduce their ta xable income, the amount available for transfer will be correspondingly reduced. - Signed paperwork: You cannot automatically claim the education credit transfer. You need to have the student sign the back of their T2202A Form acknowledging the transfer. Tuition transfers are reviewed by the Canada Revenue Agency
and without a signed T2202A, your transfer credit will be refused. - RESP income: If you opened a Registered Education Savings Plan for your child, any withdrawals are reported as income by the student.

Crafting the afternoon away at St. John’s Lutheran Church Rosanne Fortier There is a drop-in Craft Afternoon from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday from September until May at St. John’s Lutheran Church. “Anyone in the community is welcome to come; there is no fee to participate. We normally have between two and ten participants at a time. We made quilts for missions; a number of these we send
to Nicaragua by our pastor who goes on a mission trip there.” Sharon Steinwand, a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and a participant in this craft group said. “We also made tea bags for Welcome Wagon. Otherwise, it is a free for all where people bring in whatever type of craft they enjoy doing. We teach each other the crafts
that we are familiar with. Korean ladies are learning to use a sewing machine. Also, people don’t need to bring anything; they can just watch others doing projects and get ideas from them. I brought some stuff for card-making and we will be making Easter cards with this. Then it’s also a way to visit and make new friends.”

previous performers are teaching music in the community.” Caroline Knowles, President said. The performers voiced their greatness at the 36th annual Wendy Brook Concert at A.L. Horton School on April 9. This concert is a means for local entertainers to showcase their skills and is so popular that the gym only had standing room available. Peter Dobbie was the MC and when he asked some of the young stars questions, he received some surprising answers. Shade Clark played the fiddle for
two-and-a-half years and she already received awards in major competitions. All the performers had the audience spellbound during their performances, for which they received an appreciative applause. Dylan Vadnais gave a toast of humor with her presentation-One Incredible Ride which she wrote herself. “A teenager’s personality is like a rollercoaster. A day without drama is like a day without breathing, it’s not going to happen. Strap in and hold tight until she’s 20 because she’s on one incredible ride.” Dylan said. Amen.

the future may look like. People who are passionate about music are asked to consider if they have space in their lives to make a contribution to this wonderful festival that provides incredible enrichment in the lives of children outside of the regular school curriculum. “I sincerely [we will] have many more inspiring years for the festival.” Knowles said.

WISE women in the making
Mundare School Submitted Four lucky grade six students from Mundare School, and their teacher Adrienne Mills, attended Choices 2015 at the University of Alberta on February 18th. The Choices Conference began in 1991 and now brings up to 600 Grade Six girls to together to discover the wonders of science, engineering and technology for themselves. They spent the day at the University of Alberta participating in science and engineering activities. The day started in a lecture theatre where they saw a banana turned into a hammer using liquid Nitrogen, homemade glow sticks, and an oscillating solution that continuously changed colors once mixed. From there the girls went on to the science labs for
hands on activities- they made lip balm and attempted to bust the myth of overlapping phonebooks being impossible to pull apart. The culminating activity was a challenge building a robotic arm out of cardboard, tape, string, straws and a cup. They
lifted 44 marbles with their arm. It was a fun and inspiring day!

Simple precautions to reduce risk of Hantavirus AHS Submitted As spring cleaning season begins, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reminding Albertans to take simple steps to
protect themselves from Hantavirus. Hantavirus – a potentially fatal illness that primarily affects the lungs/respiratory system – is caused when humans inhale particles of urine or feces from an infected rodent, which become airborne when disturbed. As such, anyone who disturbs areas of mice or mice droppings can be at risk. -To protect yourself and greatly reduce your risk of illness, follow these precautions whenever cleaning areas of mice or mice droppings: - Open doors and windows for ventilation, and keep out of the area for at least 30 minutes prior to commencing clean up. - Wearing rubber gloves, thoroughly soak droppings, nests and dead mice with a bleach/water solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) or a household disinfectant.
- Let the bleach water solution sit for five minutes. - Never disturb any droppings, nests or dead mice, prior to soaking with this bleach solution. - Mop up bleach-soaked droppings, nest and/or dead mice, or pick up with paper towels, and place them in a plastic bag. - Seal the bag and put in a garbage container with a tight fitting lid. - Wash your gloves before removing, and then wash your hands. - Never vacuum or sweep droppings, nests or dead mice. This can create dust that can be inhaled. The dust may contain Hantavirus. - If dealing with significant mouse infestations or with mouse infestations in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, contact Health Link Alberta (1.866.408.5465) to discuss necessary precautions. Although rare, Hantavirus can be fatal. Infected individuals typically show symptoms one to two weeks following exposure; however, symptoms can appear up to five weeks after exposure. Symptoms resemble severe flu, including fever, body aches, chills, abdominal problems and severe breathing problems. Any Albertan who has recently been in an area contaminated by mice and subsequently develops severe flu-like symptoms or difficulty breathing should see a doctor immediately. Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.

All smiles for a healthy mouth AHS Submitted April is Oral Health Month. Most of us know that diet and exercise play an important role in keeping us healthy. Did you know that a healthy mouth is also an important part of your overall health? With April being Oral Health Month, it’s a great time to think about the importance of keeping
your teeth and gums healthy and learn about the local resources available to help you do just that. Although the mouth is part of the body, we often think of it as something sepa rate. Evidence shows that oral disease is associated with other health problems including diabetes, heart disease, respiratory illness, as well as pre-
term and low-birthweight babies. Poor oral health can also affect a person’s overall quality of life. Mouth pain, missing teeth or oral infections can inf luence the way a person speaks, eats and socia l iz es, a ffecting their physical, mental and social well-being. Oral health problems can also be a sign of something more serious,
including oral cancer. The good news? Oral health is something we can all maintain, as part of our routine daily hygiene. Make it a habit to brush teeth at least t wice a day (in the morning, and before bedtime), and be sure to visit an oral health professional regularly, for routine cleanings and check-ups. If you are experiencing signs of oral health concerns, including bleeding gums or irritation or
News Advertiser Page 11 pain in the mouth, don’t ignore it. Visit an oral health professional. To help prevent tooth decay in children at higher risk and in f inancial need, AHS delivers a preschool f luoride varnish program for eligible children aged 12 to 35 months, and a schoolbased f luoride varnish and dental sealant program for children in Kindergarten to Grade 2 and Grades 1 and 2, respectively.

Crop protection 2015
AGRICULTURE
Agri-News Crop Protection 2015 (the “Blue Book”) is here. One of the most widely requested publications from Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), the “Blue Book” is revised annually. New product registrations and other new details give producers the most upto-date information available to protect their crops.
“An important part of the annual update is the addition of newly registered products,” says Mark Cutts, crop specialist with ARD. “For the 2015 Blue Book, a number of new pesticide entries have been added. New product additions were made to all four pesticide sections (herbicides, insecticides, seed treatments and foliar fungicides). Significant
April 20, 2015
changes in some products, crops covered and usage instructions/selector charts give producers better options than ever.” Newly registered seed treatments focus on wireworm suppression. These seed treatments contain active ingredients that provide early season wireworm protection in cereals. Other seed treatment products have added additional fungicides to provide a more complete disease package. A number of new insecticides have been registered for use in 2015. Most of the new insecticides are registered for use on potatoes to control insects such aphids and Colorado potato beetle. “Compared to the previous few years, there were
fewer foliar fungicides registered for 2015,” says Cutts. “New foliar fungicides are available for use on pulse crops and potatoes. For 2015, new herbicides were also introduced; however these products use existing herbicide modes of action. These new herbicide entries were registered for in-crop use and vegetation control in non-crop areas.” Copies of the 2015 Crop Protection book can be purchased by visiting www.agriculture.alberta. ca/blue or through ARD’s Publications Office at 780427-0391. Other inquiries or comments about the 2015 Crop Protection book can be directed to the Ag Info Centre at 310FARM.

Andrew School Submitted
Over the course of two days grade 1-6 students practiced the art of pysanky. This was made possible from the strong efforts of volunteers, Colleen Mascher, Carol Sorotsky and Lydia Yadlowski, who donated
their time and supplies and to our parent volunteers, Tammy Evans & Sandra Marianicz. They all shared their talents as they assisted each student with the design and completion of a pysanka just in time for Ukrainian Easter. The end-results were beautiful to behold.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, Ever since my wife retired from teaching five years ago, she loves to move things around the house. It seems the furniture is never in the right place. At least once a week, a coffee table moves, then a couch or an area rug. Sometimes I come home from work and wonder if I entered the wrong house! It was fine when all she did was move a few things, however the day I couldn't find our bed because she changed rooms was a bit stressful. Now she wants different furniture to play house. I've convinced her to look for used furniture to keep the costs down, but I'm not thrilled about searching for it piece by piece. What do you think the chances are that someone moving would just sell us their whole house of furniture so I could get this over quickly? Maybe then my wife would be entertained for a while, and I could get some rest.
• • • Cash: Even with a house full of
new furniture, it'll be hard to get some rest when you can't find your bed! Carry: Your wife has certainly
Duane “Cash” Holze & Todd “Carry” Holze 04/19/15 ©The Classified Guys®
taken up an interesting hobby in retirement. Most people get into pastimes like fishing or scrapbooking, not rearranging furniture. Cash: Moving your furnishings every now and then is quite common and can make your home more interesting, but rearranging every week is a bit extreme. Maybe it's time to sit down and figure out what she's really trying to accomplish. Then, you can actually work together to make the house comfortable for both of you, or at least decide where to keep the dining table! Carry: If you still find she needs a variety of new furniture, the classifieds can certainly be a
great option for acquiring what you want on a budget. Finding a whole house full of furniture may be a bit difficult, but you can certainly acquire it room by room. Cash: Looking for someone who is moving is a great idea. They are most likely to be the ones selling multiple pieces. However, your next problem will be where to store all the extra furniture without making your garage look like a warehouse. Carry: Also, have your wife visit garage sales in your area. She may not only find lots of items, but it could become a hobby that replaces rearranging. And that should give you a little more time to rest!

Whether it's moving furniture, smoking, or exercising, almost anything can become a habit. And good or bad, some habits are hard to break. But one theory developed by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, author of Psycho-Cybernetics, claims habits can be formed or broken in 21 days. He originally found that it took amputees 21 days to stop feeling the phantom sensations in their amputated limb, but further studies revealed the time-frame applied to forming habits as well. During the three weeks of repeating the activity, new neuroconnections or pathways in the brain were created solidifying new behaviors.
My friend Chuck came into work Monday morning hunched over and in pain. One look told me that he somehow threw out his back over the weekend. When I cornered him at lunch to find out what happened, he told me that it was his wife's birthday last weekend and as a gift she insisted he help rearrange the furniture in their living room. "Let me guess," I said. "You threw out your back moving that ridiculously heavy and uncomfortable sofa bed that you guys own." "Kind of," he groaned holding his back. "Moving it wasn't bad. But since I forgot it was her birthday Saturday, she made me sleep on it!"
Movin' on Up If you enjoy a good moving sale, then you may be in luck. According to US Census data, about 16% of the population or over 40 million people move each year. About half of those people move because they want to own a home, pay less for housing or live in a better neighborhood. About 25% move for family reasons, like getting married or divorced, and 16% move for work-related reasons, like a new job or shortening their commuting distance.

WEDNESDAY 5:00 PM DEADLINE FOR ALL ADS KUHN, Max Peter Dad, Gido April 25, 1934- April 21 1999 Time may heal the broken heart, Time may make the world less sore, But time can never stop the longing For the loved one gone before. I think of him in silence, His name I oft recall, There is nothing left to answer. But his picture on the wall. His weary hours and days of pain His trouble nights are past; In our aching hearts we know He has found sweet rest at last. You’re not forgotten, Father, dear Nor ever shall you be. As long as life and memory last I shall remember thee. Nothing can ever take away The love a heart holds dear, Fond memories linger every day Remembrance keeps him near. Those who we loved go out of sight, But never out of mind; They are cherished in the hearts Of those they leave behind. His dear bright eyes and cheerful face Are pleasant to recall; He had a loving word for each And died beloved by all. Remembering you with love, Kuhn, Damato & Zabrick Families
SIRACKY, Len February 8, 1938 – April 13, 2013 In loving remembrance of Len who died two years ago. Softly the leaves of memory fall, Gently we gather and treasure them all. Unseen, unheard, you are always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear. There will always be a heartache, And often a silent tear, But always precious memories, Of days when you were here. Today, tomorrow, our whole life through, We will always love and remember you. Our Family chain is broken, And nothing remains the same But as God calls us one by one Our Family chain will link again. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by, Toni and Family

Pastor Wes Stefanec The Rock Ministries and Church We were pleased to share the company of our guests for being a part of this special celebration, and benefit from their support and donations in yet another year and another very enjoyable and successful Easter Monday. At noon people started to gather in to enjoy a time of board games, fellowship, and getting acquainted with new folks. Some really worthy and healthy relationships were started from this celebration. At around four someone bold enough started an open mike with a few jokes, some of which were actually really funny while others… well you know how gatherings can be; if you have lived in this community for more than six months then we all know someone who loves cats, and so we were all subject to a cat joke. There was a short but very specific inspirational message about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, followed by grace and some acknowledgements and appreciations of all the folks who not only saw an opportunity for themselves, but also stepped out to add value to people’s lives and to the community. All the food and fellowship really started to flow and an awesome time was had by all. Preparations are already underway for Thanksgiving which will include the Rock’s 10th year as a Church outreach center in Vegreville. We would like to acknowledge the work of the ‘Mission to Many’ organization. What a wonderful group out of Viking and surrounding area; they donated not only time to prepare and serve but to also take time to build valuable relationships with the approximately 60 guests in the center. Awesome job guys. When you saw an opportunity to add value to people’s lives you stepped
into it and fulfilled a big part of the gospel message. So everyone that has been part of this passion… words are never enough gratitude, but they are what we have and what we can freely give. In saying all this please accept with great sincerity of heart the enormous amount of value that you have added to people’s lives in this and the surrounding communities through your loving acts of kindness and care. Mission to Many is a nonprof it Reg istered Interdenominational
Christian Charity. We believe in an outward expression of the love of Jesus by helping relieve the effects of poverty both locally and throughout the world. This is done through the provision of Spiritual and material care, including food, shelter and basic necessities. We also provide sponsorships for students in developing nations. As well as advancing Christian faith through building and repairing Churches, distributing bibles, and other Christian materials.
