Destined for stardom
Shade Clark takes a few minutes at the interview to perform a song on her piano. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Rosanne Fortier Shade Clark is 10 years old and has already accomplished much with her music. “I first started playing piano when I was 5 years old,” Shade said. “I figured out how to play Mary Had a Little Lamb on a keyboard by myself and my mom decided to put me in piano lessons. I started piano with Mrs. Irene Bowen though Music for Young Children. After that my mom and I met Jennifer de Forest and then I asked if I could have lessons to play the fiddle. Now I also play guitar,” Shade said. “My mom has taught me a lot and I also have learned a lot from going to jams. I like music and I love practicing. I
really love the sound of music. I have a lot of fiddle CDs that I had signed by musicians I have met.” “When I first performed in front of an audience I felt a bit nervous but I just continued and I just got used to it. Now, it’s really easy for me. I feel happy and fulfilled from knowing I am passing on joy to people’s lives through my music,” Shade admitted. “There aren’t any challenges involved because I enjoy it.” Shade has been playing the fiddle for two-and-ahalf years and she has won second place and received a medal at both the 29th and 30th annual Grand North American Old Time Fiddle Championship
Competition where the judging is based on intonation, timing and style. “My mom, Rhonda Clark, has always been my biggest support! She works really hard to help me. My friend Walter, who is 95 and is like a grandpa to me has always encouraged me with my music ventures. [Also,] Jennifer de Forest is the greatest teacher and my best friend. She always looks out for my best interest.” “I also play the mandolin which you can pick like a fiddle except with chording because it has two strings that you have to press down and would equal one on the fiddle.” “My hobbies are archery, drawing, painting, crafts and
playing with make-up and doing my nails,” Shade said. This young star will be performing the opening act at Russell deCarle’s Show with his trio from Prairie Oyster at the Vegreville Train Station on May 12,
2015. “I like going to the Train Station because I get to jam which is my favorite part!” “I made a lot of new friends there and we get together and play music and have fun!” Shade added.

Spring termination of hay land Agri-News Traditionally, forage stands are terminated in the fall so that a good seedbed can be established and the sod root system has some time to decompose. However, hay stands can also be terminated in the spring. Producers just need to be aware of a number of factors that can impact success. “Spring termination of hay land will delay the seeding date two to three weeks,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist, Alberta Ag-Info Centre, Stettler. “In order
for herbicide applications to be effective, sufficient plant material must be present. Grasses should be at the three to four leaf stage and legumes need to be actively growing to allow for good herbicide coverage. Seeding will need to be delayed three to five days after the herbicide application to allow thorough translocation into the forage plants and newly germinated weeds.” A number of factors will inf luence the type of annual crop to be seeded says Yaremcio.
“With sod seeding, the most consistent results have occurred with cereal crops such as barley or oats. The larger seed size with cereals allows seeds
to be placed beneath the thatch layer into soil where good soil to seed contact occurs. Crop competitiveness must also be considered. Seed quality, seeding rate, seeding depth, crop height and fertilizer placement are all factors that producers need to consider.” Soil moisture must be managed properly. In many areas of the province, conservation of spring moisture is essential for crop establishment. Direct seeding into sod will retain available soil moisture that would be lost if multiple tillage operations were used to prepare a seedbed. Even with direct seeding, it is important to recognize that available soil moisture will be reduced as the forage species grows to an appropriate stage for spraying. Moisture conditions at the time of seeding must be evaluated, as does soil fertility. “Remember that late seeded crops will have a shorter growing season to produce grain. In these situations, seeding a crop that can be used for silage or green feed offers a viable end use for these fields.” Control of perennial species with the application of a glyphosate product is not as effective as fall application, notes Yaremcio. “There is a 15 to 20 per cent reduction in control when spring applied. This could be caused by the plants emerging after the application or if the thatch is thick, the herbicide does not come into contact with the new growth. It’s likely that a fall application of glyphosate pre-harvest will be required to get the level of control that’s required.” A factsheet answering many questions about spring termination of hay land is available on Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development’s website under Frequently Asked Questions.

Special Olympics hockey has great season
Fran Serna Submitted This year has seen our hockey team grow from 11 players to 19 players, who came together on Monday evenings to practice new skills, to prepare them for the Alberta Special Olympic Games held in Grande Prairie on Feb 20-22. The first tournament was played in Edmonton at Northlands January 31 where we won 2 out 3 On February 20, we traveled to Grande Prairie with 13 athletes, 2 coaches, 2 volunteers and 3 support staff. We played three games at the Provincials, winning the first three tournament games led our team to the gold medal round in their division. The Vegreville Pole Kats played hard against Strathcona went into overtime with a final score of 5-6. The team
was awarded Silver Medals at the Provincial Games. Special appreciation goes out to Rose Gorda for all the fundraising she did to get us there in style. Also, to all the volunteers that assisted us in the Edmonton and Grande Prairie tournaments, as well as throughout the year with practices to get us there. Also, our valuable sponsors, including Royal Lepage Ralph Sorachan, Vegreville Coop, Webbs Machinery, Val Miller, Lori Ann Cohoe, Rhonda Manz, Gus Borzel, Laura Danyluk, Vantage Builders, Alberta Treasury Branch, Rotary Club, and of course, M.O.D.E.L Project Success Coach, Tracy Laschowski, who arranged for the Jr. B Rangers to come on March 9 for a game with the Special Olympic Team.

Rosanne Fortier Vegreville Composite High School presented a special treat in their cafeteria when ‘Cities under Fire’ performed a short concert at lunchtime on March 20. Their lyrics were full of positive messages and extra energy was added when the band members enticed the youth to clap their hands to the beat of the music. This dynamic and melodic Christian rock band hails from North Battleford, Saskatchewan. They started performing in 2009 as a partnership between the brothersAndrew and Jardeth Hemmerling and songwriter David Millar.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, For weeks, each time I tried starting my car, the battery was dead. I have had to ask my neighbor for a jump-start many times and even a few people at work when it's time to go home. It turns out the dummy indicator that dings when the lights are left on was broken. So every time I got out of my car, sure enough I left the lights on. I've run the battery dead so many times that it barely starts the car. I came across an ad in the newspaper that advertised used car batteries for only $20 each. I was wondering if it's a good idea to buy a used battery.
• • • Cash: Okay, so let's get this
straight. When you realized the indicator was broken, you didn't replace it. And after jumpstarting the car countless times, you still haven't replaced it. And it' s the indicator that's called a dummy? Carry: The first thing you need to do is get a new indicator light to save yourself a lot of future hassles. Cash: As for buying a used battery from the classified ad you found, it depends on your situation. A new battery for a small

sedan can cost as little as $50. At that price, it may be best to just buy a new one. Carry: On the other hand, if you have a car that takes an expensive battery, upwards of $80 or more, then a used battery can be a good bet. Cash: There are some things to keep in mind when buying a used car battery. First, make sure that it is less than six months old. Car batteries have a limited life and degrade over time, especially when they are not actively used. Carry: A battery less than six months old has usually undergone little sulfating. Sulfating occurs when crystals begin forming in the battery as a result of the chemical
reaction that produces electricity. In time, these crystals build up and limit the flow of current through the battery. Cash: For this reason, check the manufacturing date on the battery. It is usually stamped or labeled on the side. Sometimes it's in code with a letter for the month ("A" for January) and a number for the year ("10" for 2010). Carry: And before you replace the battery, fix the indicator. Otherwise, it might just start dinging to indicate you're the dummy. •

Most cars today still operate on a 12-volt electrical system to power everything from the starter to power seats. However, the standard 12-volt system in your car isn't actually 12 volts at all. Technically a car electrical system is 14 volts and is designed to run between 13.5 and 14.5 volts during normal operation. Your car's 12-volt battery isn't actually 12 volts either. The average lead acid battery measures about 12.6 volts.
Working at the service counter for an auto dealership, I get a lot of women coming in asking for help. But my last customer made me laugh. When she came in to purchase a battery for her car, she told me that she had no idea how cars worked. "My car wouldn't start this morning," she explained. "So I called my husband at work to come help. But he was in a meeting and muttered something about how simple it was to fix. That's why I'm here." Confused by her story I asked her, "So what did your husband tell you to do about the battery?" Handing me her Visa card, she replied, "He said to just charge it!" (Thanks to Billy K.)
Speaking Battery Auto batteries contain a lot of information. Here’s help to decipher the code. Group Size: There's over 40 combinations of size & terminal location. This is typically part of the model number. Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): The amount of current delivered at 0°F. Cranking Amps (CA): Similar to CCA, it specifies the starting current at 23°F. Reserve Capacity: How long the fully charged battery could run without the use of an alternator. Shipping Date: Designated by a letter for the month & a number for the year. Warranty: (XX/YY) Signifies months of coverage. XX = free replacement period. YY = total coverage period.

MEMORIAM
KULMATYSKI, Eddie Nov. 3, 1932 – Apr. 28, 2014 In loving memory of a Husband, Father, Gido and Great Gido. Maybe someday a nice poem will fit to honour the anniversary we dread; But not yet. Out world will never be the same. The spot you once filled with your generosity, love and humor has been replaced by an aching emptiness that shadows each new day. Your violin sits alone on the shelf with no one to play its music; yet we still hear the melodies lingering in our hearts. Your workshop has been emptied of most your worldly treasures; yet your closet stays untouched – just in case you should come back home. While it’s easy to remember the good times; the tears come just as easily – and they sneak up unannounced. This grief is a journey, and our has still just begun. God willing, you are safe and free of pain, reunited with other loved ones passed; But here we miss you every single day, and we know you miss us too. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed Victoria, Darlene and her family, Evelyn and Fernando and their family

Vortex gear up for new season
Michael Simpson Editor The Vegreville Vortex are getting their gear ready for a new season of football, with a few openings in the roster yet to be filled. The team will be welcoming a new coach at the helm while they build on the success of last year’s wins. “Anthony Bienvenue is our new head coach, Colby Coers is just not able to continue as head coach any longer but will be involved in some capacity,” Vortex Club President Dellas Baxandall said. “We presently have a roster of 16 players as we have 6 players that are moving on from last season. We would love to be at 24 players ultimately. An additional 8 players would be great.” “The cost is $600 for the season, includes everything except cleats. All equipment is fitted and supplied for the season. All transportation is provided, hot meals after each game. Insurance through Football Alberta is included,” Dellas explained. Should the registration cost be a barrier to some, there’s good news on that front as well. Local organizations exist to help offset that cost to families so kids can participate. “We have families that have used KidSport in the past and now there is also Jumpstart, both are excellent ways that all kids can play!” Last season, the Vortex broke a multi-year losing streak that pumped fresh enthusiasm back into the squad. “The wins were huge for the team, the veterans enjoyed the win after all their hard work. We know we are competitive in this league now and
look forward to the season ahead,” Dellas said. “The practice schedule has not yet been set, but we are looking at practice perhaps Monday, Wednesday, walk through on Thursday night before game day on Friday. Practices are usually 2 hours from 6 to 8 p.m.” The Vortex football players are more than just a sports team; playing on the field means a chance to be a role model in the community. “We will be involved in community events as usual, so far we are committed to the Ukrainian Festival 50/50 in the grandstand as well as a parents-only commitment to work in the beer gardens. We will also be having a fundraising garage sale again, as it was a huge success last year. Parents and players are called upon to help with these events, there is a fundraising commitment for sure.” Of course, there’s also the annual parade during the Country Fair. “Every year there are some tears in the locker room after the last game of the season,” Dellas said. “You become a close family on and off the field, wether you are a coach, parent or a player. The privilege of being involved with a team that has dedication, a common goal in mind, a purpose, is second to nothing. Friendships are made that will never be broken. Alumni always return, just like Anthony who once was a player for the Vortex.” For more information on the club, visit their website, http://www.vegrevillevortex.com/ or find the club on facebook; facebook.com/vegrevillevortexfootball.

Mothers Day fundraiser for girls worldwide Kayla Gutsch Triangle H photography I wandered into Chapter’s the other day to pick up a book and when I opened the doors my senses were pleasantly surprised with a beautiful Mother’s Day display. Even though my own Mom suddenly passed away three and a half years ago, I immediately reflected on the many great memories I have with her. She was the kind of woman who understood the value of forgiveness and acceptance. Mom was strong and stubborn at times but had a heart of gold. She loved farming, gardening and flowers especially. “Every year for Mothers Day my Mom, my sisters and I would go have
brunch and then head out for our yearly greenhouse tour. We’d drive all over the countryside, visiting as many greenhouses as we could! We’d talk, laugh and share stories until we barely had the energy to drive home. Even though she is no longer with us, my sisters and I continue the greenhouse tour every year in her honor. This year I realized something. I don’t have a good picture of my Mom and me. Both of us being avid photo takers, in the process of documenting family events we forgot to include ourselves. Time passed, life happened and now the opportunity for such a cherished memory has passed.
This Mother’s Day I wanted to give Moms the opportunity to have at least one amazing portrait of themselves and their children while contributing to a cause for the greater good of the world. I chose Plan Canada’s “Because I am a Girl” charity because I believe that investing in women is important. It wasn’t until my Mom was missing in my life that I realized the powerful role she played in our family and community. Women are so much more than just Mothers. They are wives, home makers, businesswomen, farmers, managers, employees, sisters and friends. Perhaps most importantly, women
are the glue that make a family and community strong. If we invest in girls in the developing world, they can grow up educated and empowered which can make their countries so much stronger as a whole! Think of the mothers they can become… I’m just a local photographer, who wants to honor her Mom for Mother’s Day by gifting some Moms with beautiful portraits of themselves and their children while giving back to an amazing cause! If you’d like more information on the Mother’s Day Mini Session “Grow Your Love” Fundraiser please call 780 603 8960 or email kayla@trianglehphoto. com.

Kinettes host successful night for 80’s ladies
Kinette Club of Vegreville Submitted The ladies dressed in 80’s to a sold out event! The Vegreville Kinette Club hosted their first Ladies Night Out – Girl’s Just Wanna Have Fun-80’s style event in hopes to attain their fundraising goal for the 47th Street park replacement. “The overwhelming community support shows the true heart of the Vegreville community. When we started planning this event months ago, our club goal
was to sell 150 tickets, we thought that would be a success. We were sold out nearly two weeks prior to the event with only a handful of tickets remaining. That was 350 tickets sold, plus all the volunteers in the room!” said Candice van der Torre, club President. The ladies flooded into the event in all types of attire. From neon colors, loud leggings, arm and leg warmers, Oiler’s gear (sporting cheering signs and all), tie-dyed outfits, shoulder pads, colored
mohawks, high school tracksuits, fanny packs, one piece jumpsuits, 80’s concert shirts, some great make-up and of course some amazing hair. While some rocked the work out look, others took on more of a business look. “We were thrilled that the majority of the women dressed up! As we greeted them at the door the excitement for the event grew.” The evening entailed a delicious catered meal by local catering service Twisted Sister. Several raff le and auction items surrounded the hall, including something to suit each person at the event. The mystery raffle proved to be an exciting draw - 3 large prizes, all donated, were unwrapped by some excited ladies. A leopard print bench, a Margaritaville blender, and the grand prize of a $750 Lagostina cookware set. The bean bag raffle grand prize showed its popularity with the grand prize being
a $350 gift certificate to the Fantasy Land Hotel, and a luggage set. The silent auction, and raffle tables had several unique items that had the women keeping a close eye on the many prizes. Sebastian Steele, award winning hypnotist put on an exciting and entertaining show with more than 20 attendees being successfully hypnotized on and off the stage. The volunteers poured on to the stage for a

chance to become part of the show. Dusk ‘til Dawn DJ Services provided the 80’s music for the whole event, and the dance floor was rockin’ all evening. Was the event a success? “Huge! Beyond our expectations, considering this is the first time we have hosted an event of this size. Preliminary numbers are showing we have raised nearly $20,000. We are shocked, thrilled, and grateful to every person who played a role in ensuring the night was a success.,” van der Torre said. “From the volunteers, businesses, individuals and entertainment experts, and of course, all the attendees who came for a ladies night out, this community showed so much heart towards this event. As we look forward to this KINpark project we are excited that all these funds will go to complete the model of the playground we had originally designed with Canadian Recreation
Solutions. In partnership with the Town of Vegreville, the Kinette Club is allocating roughly $100,000 in funds directly to the structure costs of the playground. This is exciting because we have designed a playground for the community that is like no other in town, with a tentative installation date of summer 2015!” shared van der Torre. “We recognize the importance of “Serving the Community’s Greatest Need” and will be offering enhancement opportunities to other local service clubs. Local clubs will have the opportunity to sponsor additional pieces to the playground and have recognition for it at the park. We look forward to working with the many other service clubs in our community and giving them the opportunity to enhance this project.” added van der Torre in closing.
