Rosanne Fortier On March 29, children were planters of their own sweet adventure at the Easter Egg Hunt at Vegreville Centennial Library. The morning kicked off
with youngsters creating their own baskets from egg cartons. Then these keen hunters went in to locate the eggs that the Easter Bunny placed around the library. “Look Mom, Dad, there’s
an egg in this plant!” The children exclaimed. Other eggs were found behind the computers, on the coat rack, on shelves and every place you could imagine.

Rosanne Fortier Laughter is a relative to good food and friends. There were approximately 230 people who met with all three when Heather Curling Club presented Giggles Comedy Night Spaghetti Supper and Dance featuring Comedians Lars Callieou and Alex Fortin. The evening was complimented by catering by
Simply Fine Sweets, music by Jonathan Zabrick-Dusk til Dawn, a silent auction and prizes. Holly Cependa from the organizing committee said they received comments that the food was amazing, the silent auction items were great and the comedians were hilarious, especially Alex Fortin. Actually, laughter blends well with what Heather
Curling Club is all abouthaving fun with others while keeping fit. Anyone can join this club which has 33 youth curlers in it. Club member and event co-organizer Rhonda Hayduk explained that the club is always looking for new members to join up as older curlers retire. The club pays its own way with events like the spaghetti supper as a fundraiser.

TOP 7 WAYS TO TRIGGER A CRA REVIEW - Forget a T slip: You are required to report all your income. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) receives copies of all the T slips issued, so if you forget, misplace or hide a T slip, it will inevitably be uncovered by their matching program and result in a reassessment. Do this twice in a four-year period and you will be looking at substantial penalties. - Your business looks like a hobby: The CRA does not expect every new enterprise to make a profit their first few years in business. However, you cannot create a business for the purpose of creating losses. There must be some reasonable expectation of profit in future years. If you claim year after year of losses, you may be answering questions about your business plan from a CRA auditor.
www. NewsAdvertiser.com
- Out of the ordinary: Claiming higher than usual expenses is asking for trouble. For obvious reasons, the CRA does not publicize what the amounts are that will automatically trigger a review. However, if you are claiming to use your vehicle 95 per cent for business use, we would expect that they will want to see your log book. - Living large on little income: The CRA may conduct a net worth assessment and you will then have to explain the discrepancy. There may be a good reason. For example, you may have won the lottery or come into an inheritance. On the other hand, you may be doing work under the table. If this is the case, you may want to come clean under their Voluntary Disclosure Program. Net worth assessments often result from information provided to the CRA on their snitch line. - Compliance history: If the CRA finds that you have cheated once, you can rest assured that this is not the last you will hear from them. If, on the other hand, they conduct a random review and you pass with flying colours, they will be
- Claiming credits incorrectly: Yes, Line 220 says you can claim support payments paid but it does not explain what qualifies as support payments. Support payments for children are deductible only if your agreement was dated before May 1, 1997. Support payments for a spouse or common-law partner are only deductible if the court order or agreement is registered with the CRA. So a claim for support payments on your current tax return is pretty much going to guarantee a review if you do not have your court order or written agreement on file. - Claiming regularly reviewed credits: There are some credits that are more likely to be reviewed than others by the CRA. Moving expenses are commonly reviewed. However, if you are asked to supply your receipts, you should not be concerned as long as you claimed everything correctly. Same with the tuition transfer. As long as you have the signed T2202A Form from the student doing the transferring, you have nothing to worry about.

How’s your farm biz health? Agri-News An Excel program available from Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) can help producers increase the viability and success of their farm business. ARD’s Agricultural Business Analyser (ABA) Simple Farm Ratio Analyzer gives users a quick idea of the financial health of their farm or ranch as well as a comparison of their businesses ratios to industry benchmarks. “The ABA Simple Farm Ratio Analyzer is a short cut Excel program that takes just eight key financial entries and calculates financial ratios for the farm/ranch and colour codes them in comparison to industry benchmarks,” says Rick Dehod, farm finance specialist, ARD, Edmonton. “These eight key financial numbers can be taken from your accountant prepared financial statements for the past year and entered into the various open cells in the one page spreadsheet.” The eight key numbers are farm gross revenue, farm gross expenses, depreciation, debt servicing payments, current assets, long term assets, current debt and long-term debt. “With these eight quick entries you will know how your farm is doing financially,” says Dehod. “You can then consult with your accountant or an agricultural finance specialist to come up with plans to mitigate and improve those areas where your financial ratios are weak.” Using your net worth statement for the beginning of the 2015, you can do your income and expense projection, sources and uses of funds (cash flow) for the year and project your closing net worth statement for 2015, says Dehod. “Once you have your projected 2015 closing net worth statement, you can generate the year-end financial ratios, and compare them to the
ratios you generated from your beginning net worth statement. This will give an indication if your 2015
operating plan will progress the financial viability and health of your farming operation.
“It all seems like a lot of work, but it will help you create an awareness that can help you make better decisions to increase the viability

and success of your farm business.” The ABA Simple Farm Ratio Analyzer is available from ARD’s website. For
more information, contact Rick Dehod at 780-4274466 or visit the Farm Manager homepage.

Balancing data collection and privacy rights Our Conservative Government conducted the 2011 Census using a short-
form questionnaire and a new voluntary National Household Survey (NHS). In doing so, our Government met the necessary balance between collecting statistical data and protecting the privacy rights of Canadians, while also respecting taxpayer dollars. I have a lot of respect for Liberal Member of Parliament Ted Hsu, but he was wrong on this issue because his proposed reforms to the Statistics Act would have reversed the steps our Government has taken to meet this balance. Indeed, these reforms would have reduced accountability by changing the appointment process for the Chief Statistician, imposed costly and inefficient practices, and penalized Canadians who refuse to disclose detailed private information. Statistics Canada has already determined that the NHS provides useful and usable data. And, our Conservative Government will continue to consider ways to improve the next census cycle, to ensure that the information collected remains relevant and reliable, while also respecting taxpayer dollars and the privacy rights of Canadians. Sincerely, Leon Benoit, M.P.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, Bless my Mom for living with my Dad. He’s a great guy, but very forgetful. After I was born, he helped Mom to the car, but forgot me, his little girl, in the nursery! When I got married, he forgot to show at the rehearsal dinner after work. Fortunately when Mom was alive, she took care of most things, but now he’s on his own. Last week he called to tell me that he forgot which street he parked his car on. Since I live almost 100 miles away, trips to help him take time. I’m thinking of hiring someone to occasionally help with things like trips to the store, laundry, and all the stuff Mom used to do. He was quite excited when I mentioned it. I thought a classified ad would do the trick, but I’m not sure how to interview a person for this type of position. Do you have any suggestions that could help out?
• • • Carry: Your Dad might just win the “forgetful award” for leaving you behind at the hospital and missing your rehearsal dinner. Although at least he made it to your wedding…we hope! Cash: It sounds like finding

It’s inevitable that each year we grow a little older. However, we’re growing older as a nation as well. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of people age 65 and older is projected to double by the year 2050 to over 83 million. And the U.S. is not alone in its growth. In 1990 only 26 nations had more than 2 million people over age 65. By the year 2030, the number of countries is expected to expand to sixty.
At our last game of bridge, my girlfriends and I saw an ad in the newspaper for a theme dance at our local senior center. To attend you had to wear an outfit that was the same color as your husband’s hair when you got married. My friend Mary immediately said she had the perfect brown dress to wear. Alice, on the other hand, said she could go in a yellow dress since her husband used to be blonde. My third friend Abigail picked up the ad and paused for a minute. Then looking up at us she said, “I don’t think I can go. It would be too embarrassing.” Turning a bright shade of red, she continued, “When my husband and I got married, his head was already bald.” (Thanks to Angela M.)
Getting the Boot some assistance for your Dad may be a good idea. In addition to placing a classified ad, you may want to check with any groups that your father may belong to, such as a church or social club. He may already know someone who he trusts to help him out with a few things. Carry: Talking with neighbors may also be a good avenue to explore. If not for weekly assistance, they could be available to call if there ever is an emergency. Cash: When it comes to hiring for this task, finding someone you trust is most important. Start with some of your Dad’s friends and see if they can recommend any-
one. A referral is always a good place to start. And be sure to include your Dad in the hiring process. Since he’s excited about the idea, he’d probably be more than happy to participate. Carry: As for assessing your prospects, arrange the meeting like a job interview. Ask applicants for at least three references and previous work experiences. Then check each reference carefully. Make sure the applicant is someone you’re comfortable in hiring. Cash: And as one of their first tasks, maybe they can help your Dad remember where he parked his car!
Parking the car is usually fairly simple, but if you live in a metro area, you know it can be a hassle. In fact, parking cars is quite a big business. According to census statistics, there are over 9,800 parking garages in the U.S. employing more than 80,000 people. And for many of us who park where we shouldn’t, the costs can add up. For example, New York City collects more than 550 million dollars each year in parking ticket revenue from the more than 5 million tickets that the city issues. •

We thought of you today But that is nothing new We thought of you yesterday And will tomorrow too We think of you in silence And make now outward show For what it meant to lose you Only those who love you know Remembering you is easy We do it every day It’s the heartache of losing you That will never go away. VVA Introduces‌ How to work with colored art glass VVA Submitted Glass art is the use of colored glass that has been worked into a form that is considered pleasing to the eye. These forms or pieces can be either decorative or functional in nature. There are many techniques that use art glass, but a few of the common ones are stained glass, blown glass and kiln-formed
(used or warm) glass. In Vegreville, there are artists who work with stained and fused glass. Blown glass however, requires a large space and furnace to create the multitude of shapes and color. It is a very beautiful and mesmerizing process to observe. At this time, we do not have local artists who work with this tech-
nique. 1. What is this art form? Kiln formed glass, warm glass or fused glass, is made by cutting and arranging flat, pieces of colored art glass, in a predetermined shape, form or design. Once the desired purpose is decided upon and created, the pieces are assembled and placed in a kiln and are then heated to high temperatures. This process is called firing. The pieces fuse, or melt together and result in the glass changing shape or color.
Stained glass work does not use a kiln. The colored art glass is cut and arranged to form patterns or designs, held together by strips of lead or copper foil and soldered together. 2. What materials do you use? Any glass that has a tested rate of expansion and contraction, called Coefficient of Expansion C.O.E. is used for kiln formed glass. . There are different companies that make colored art glass. There is a very wide range of colors available.
Glass comes in many forms: clear, colored, transparent, opaque, opal glass, dichroic or iridized, streaky and combinations. Glass comes in different thicknesses and with different textures. Glass is sold in sheets of various sizes. Glass can also come in powder form or as small bits or chunks (like sugar crystals) , beads or as stringers ( like spaghetti). For stained glass creations, flat or textured glass is used. White glue or hair spray can
be used to hold pieces in place until they are fired. 3. What tools do you need? Glass cutters, running pliers, nippers and breaking pliers, rulers and T squares, glass grinder and diamond hand pads for polishing glass are used for both stained glass and fused glass techniques. For stained glass a soldering iron, and solder, copper foil or lead strips, flux and patina are also required. 4. What steps are involved in creating a piece?

The first step in making a fused glass creation, is deciding what will be made. A pattern or a drawing of the idea is helpful. Choose the type of glass that would best create the project, and focusing on colors and textures that would enhance the creation. Cutting the desired pieces is next, paying attention to edges. Pieces are placed on a clear base piece of glass and arranged according to pattern or image. A touch of glue is added to keep pieces in place. Glass can be stacked for a special effect. Once all pieces are in place, a decision has to be made as to whether the piece should be fired resulting in a flat piece (full fuse) or fired to have some texture (tack fused). To make a stained glass piece, one must decide on the pattern and have this traced onto special paper. These pieces are used as patterns to cut the glass. Precise cutting is required so that the pieces fit, somewhat like a puzzle. Great attention is placed on the smoothness and fit of pieces. Once this is achieved, the joining of the pieces is next, whether with lead or copper foil and soldering. 5. What can be made from
these materials? Functional pieces can be made from fused glass eg. Plates, bowls vases, or artistic pieces that can be hung in windows or placed on stands for display. If pieces are made with transparent glass, having them in natural light adds to their appeal like sun-catchers. Whatever one can imagine, it can be made. The variety of colors, scenes, designs are endless. The ability to use different glass for different effects also provides endless possibilities. Stained glass pieces can be made to be actual windows, or
for hanging in a window or as lamps and glass boxes. 6. Are there safety concerns? Glass can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Safety goggles are worn when cutting glass or grinding glass. Working with a kiln requires understanding and care. Glass is heated to very high temperatures 1200-1500 F. and then cooled. All items placed in a kiln require a firing schedule. It is important to not have the glass melt too quickly or cool too quickly. Both of these result in glass cracking or creating bubbles or developing a
film on the finished piece. Knowing and understanding the nature of how glass reacts in a heated kiln is the key to successful creations. 7. Where can this art form be seen? Fused glass can be found in

homes for functional uses or for enjoyment. Because the many ideas that can be depicted in glass, one would see them as key chains, window dressings, murals. Stained glass creations are very popular in the windows of our homes, but have a thou-
sand- year history traditionally seen in windows of churches and other significant buildings. The art gallery at the Centennial Library has a display of kiln-formed glass, stained glass and blown glass creations.
