Case Processing Center delivers triple hit of support Amber Malarski Submitted Staff at the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville were bustling during the month of October for the Federal Government’s annual Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GCWCC). Employees participated in a variety of events within the office; such as bake sales, dress up day themes, a soup cook off, gift basket draws and silent auctions to raise money for the United Way, Health Partners and local charities. For the 2014 campaign, it was decided that a portion of money raised would be donated to Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS), Haying in the 30s, Vegreville Association for Living in Dignity (V.A.L.I.D), Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada with funds directed to the Lakeland region, the Vegreville Food Bank, and Legacy 4 Health. A previously held Ice Bucket Challenge donated contributions to the ALS Society of Alberta. A total of $21,010.79 was raised and donated during the 2014 GCWCC event at

CPCV. Over 1,652 lbs of food was brought in by employees and donated to the Vegreville Food Bank. 113 items of warm winter clothing were collected and donated to the Christmas Bureau. Campaign Co-Chairs witnessed the impact of tremendous community support from staff who offered to volunteer, businesses, organizations and individuals who donated time, monetary contributions and prizes. We’d like to acknowledge the local businesses that graciously donated goods to the campaign: Dairy Queen, Everything Tea, Grant Miller, Tim Horton’s, Co-op, Snap Fitness, Rocky Mountain Equipment, Hair Fantasies, Boston Pizza, Subway, Peavey Mart, the Kinsmen Golf Club and Cabella’s in Edmonton. On behalf of the community of Vegreville and surrounding area, we, at the Case Processing Centre is grateful to you all for being so generous in your contributions and participation.

School Boards’ Ongoing Engagement with the Community Trina Boymook EIPS Board Chair School boards regularly engage staff, students, and parents in consultations, and we know what we need to engage them in. The interests of these stakeholders are quite clear – they have a direct connection to and investment in the educational services we provide. We also know how to reach these stakeholders and have multiple ways to facilitate

these conversations. What we haven’t figured out is how we do the same for those who are not directly connected to our schools and our school division on a regular basis. When the Education Act comes into force in September 2015, boards will be responsible for engaging and collaborating with members of the general community regarding school division direction

and results. Individual trustees will also be responsible for engaging the community in education matters. Some of the challenges that face school boards lie with people not always understanding the stake they have in education when they don’t have children in school. This really comes to light at election time as many will respond: “I don’t have kids in schools, so…?”

Despite responses like these, we know people care about what is happening in our schools. You only have to look at recent public reaction to teachers giving out zeros or the media attention around the math curriculum to see that the broader community is engaged in education. These reactions are evidence that those who don’t have kids in school do care, and they may have strong opin-

ions about how education is delivered. The question now is how do we tap into public engagement and opinion on a regular basis, rather than only in response to intense scrutiny on specific issues? School boards will not only need to figure out what our community in general would like to weigh in on, but how we can reach out to them in an intentional, genuine way.

In our division’s 2015-2018 Three-Year Education Plan, trustees have identified community engagement as one of our priority areas. Over the next few months, trustees will consider strategies to meet this expectation. Whatever the strategies decided on, we must keep in mind that success will come from trying and maybe failing, and then trying again.

881 Outriders 4-H Light Horse Club News Jessie Lentz/ Katy Poche-Hegland Submitted Our group has gotten started this fall with meetings at Sodbusters Stables in Hardisty. We have been riding Western and English. We have been very fortunate to have the use of some horses for those who do not own one, but are still looking for more well broke older horses. On November 9th we had a jumping clinic with Sherry Engerdahl of Wainwright. The group started on the flat, learning basic skills and equitation and ended up with a full course over small fences in the Sodbusters arena. After the first two morning lessons, everyone was spoiled with an absolutely delicious lunch made by Theresa Bitzer at Sodbusters. We had soup, grilled cheese, sweet and sour meatballs, salad, veggies, cheese and juice. Thersa had a bit of

help from Jessie Lentz and Katy Poche-Hegland from the Viking area. The 881 Outriders 4-H club has over a dozen students participating from the Czar, Hardisty, Viking, Killam, Amisk and Sedgewick areas. These are ideal for anyone wishing to obtain instructor of beginners or coaching status at some point. If anyone is interested, they can call Carole Poche at 780 336 4804. Dates can be arranged. Books are available for the rider levels, along with the Stable Management in Canada book from the Alberta Equestrian Federation online. Call if you would like to be tested, remember to get your English and/or Western rider level books and Stable Management in Canada and study before you come.

MOLENKAMP, Herman In loving memory of our dear husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who passed into glory on December 29, 2004. You left us with heavy hearts and tears. If only we could turn back the clocks and relive those memorable years. Your strength, determination and inspiration was beyond measure. Your life was such a precious gift that we will always treasure. Our lives go on without you And nothing is the same We try to hide our heartache When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that loved you, Silent the tears that fall, Living our lives without you Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, Your heart always kind and true, And when we needed someone most, We could always count on you. The special years will not return When we were all together, But with the love within our hearts, You will walk with us forever. Forever loved until we meet again

SIRACKY, Len February 8, 1938 – April 13, 2013 Remembering Dad, Gido, GreatGido and Husband. The second Christmas without you. That moment that you left us, our hearts were split in two; one side was filled with memories, the other side died with you. We often lay awake at night when the world is fast asleep; and take a walk down memory lane with tears upon our cheek. Remembering you is easy, we do it every day; but missing you is a heartache that never goes away. We love and miss you. Forever in our hearts, Toni and family

VVA introduces Dianna M. Sapara

VVA Submitted Dianna is an artist living in rural Veg rev i l le, A lber ta. She spends much of her time actively gathering references and inspiration from her travels and nature around her. Dianna’s art journey started at a very young age with pencil and then with black ink on cardboard. Dianna has participated in several workshops from professional art instructors in different mediums in Canada and the USA. Dianna remains a lifelong student; creating, learning and sharing. While oil was her choice of medium over

25 years it was 6 years ago that she added encaustic wax to her list of mediums. Once she discovered this ancient art of painting with molten wax, she never looked back. It is the hot wax and tools she uses to manipulate this medium that challenges her. Dianna started showing her encaustic works in 2011 in Alberta and B.C. In 2012 her appearance in the NOA Magazine prompted interest in painting only originals in the encaustic wax medium. Dianna was the spotlight artist for July 2013 for the International Encaustic Artists and

also the featured artist for Art in the Park on the front page of the V NA. In Sept and Oct of 2013 Dianna was one of f ifty artists selected across Alberta for her art to appear in the Endeavor Arts Gallery in Calgary for the exhibit ion ca l led “ T he Inexorable Evolution of Art” sponsored by the Canadian Space Society. In March of 2014, Dianna received an award from the Hemet Valley Art Gallery in Hemet , Ca l i for n ia , USA for her Canadian Northern Lights piece. In July and August she was the featured artist at the Spruce Grove Art Gallery for her Northern Lights Series. She also appears in t he International Contemporar y A r tist Book that is distributed in USA and Europe. The months of October and November a re always busy with her travels to shows with her art to Red Deer, Saskatoon, St. A lbert and Calgary. She also works on commissioned pieces. Dianna is looking forward to 2015, when she will be the featured artist at the Loft A rt Galler y in Sher wood Park for the months of

May and June 2015 with her new series “ The Wonder of Trees.” Some of her original art can be v iewed at Sha r ron’s Art a nd Fra m ing Shop in Veg rev i l le, Different Strokes Art Gallery in Olds, Alberta, as well as on-line at w w w.dsapara.ca or contact her by email – dsapara@gmail.com.
