Music for the ages
The hand chime performances created a mellow atmosphere which soothed listeners during the performance.
Rosanne Fortier Homestead Senior Lodge rang with youthful voices while A.L. Horton School Grade 3-4 Ukrainian Bilingual and Grade 4 students conveyed joy, love and peace through music on January 30. This concert began with the song, Jingle Bells where the students’ sweet and innocent demeanor floated around from their voices. Along the way, hands shot up when they sang, “Hey!” The songs, O’ Christmas Tree, Away in a Manager followed. After that, cultural flair was added with a tune from Italy called, Jesus the Newborn Baby. Following this, a piece from China created rhythm that brought a person’s imagination to the orient. Then the audience attention was held by the song, Deck the Halls where Mrs. Dyer announced, “I see you’re decked for Valentine’s Day.” Ukrainian performances were next with Mrs. Bombak
requesting the audience to sing along, which many people proceeded to do. With these songs, the students kept in perfect harmony to the music. After this, the Grade 4 class performed a German folk tune and other melodies with hand chimes while the music circulated through the room, creating a mellow atmosphere. Every piece was well received with the audience applauding at the end. Comradeship came next. During this time, the children and audience were able to mingle by introducing themselves, shaking hands, engaging in conversations, laughing and hugging each other. Nettie Zaleschuk, resident of Homestead Lodge said, “I enjoyed the concert very much. The children were friendly and polite and they did very well with their Ukrainian and English performances. Let’s put it this way – I learned a lot of new names.”
Many seniors sang along to the Ukrainian songs these students performed, possibly reliving favourite memories of the past at the same time.
