LMFAO comes to Veg on Father’s Day
Michael Simpson Staff Writer It’s something dads would understand. Lawnmower racing, by way of the Lawn Mower Fanatics Alberta Organization (LMFAO), is coming to Vegreville. The 2013 Father’s Day Show n’ Shine event on June 16 will feature racing from the Lawnmower Fanatics, headed up by Derek Vogel and fellow Fanatic BlaineO. While visions of guys rolling slowly around a track on stock John Deere lawn tractors comes to mind, the reality is quite the opposite, said Vogel. “Virtually everyone builds their own machines. Most everyone
has a different idea or way of doing things. Even my kids help out on the building of their mowers. The one that’s getting the most work right now is my daughters’ new build. She’d been sharing driving duties with her brother last year, and wanted her own machine.” With core members of the Alberta-based chapter hailing from Wainwright, Rimbey and Provost, the farthest traveling members taking part in the races will be coming from Saskatoon, Taber and Bow Island, Vogel said. While the Fanatics are also going to be spread between the Provost Kinsmen Splash and Smash
and the Show n’ Shine on the same weekend, Vogel suggested the race is open to locals that want to build and race with them. He said they’ll be bringing two or three modified class mowers and four or five stockclass mowers as well. Not an exclusive sport, Vogel’s own 12-year-old son has been racing with him for two years, and his 13-year-old daughter started racing last year. “They’re the youngest mower racers I know if in Western Canada, and I’ll go out on a limb and throw down the challenge that they’re the fastest.” Vogel said the fanatics get lots of comments about Tim
“The Tool Man” Taylor and his mower. “Someday if he wants to bring his mower out to a race we would happily feed him some dust.” Vogel said people will be amazed at how fast a racer can travel with a stock mower, and that many of them exceed speeds of 50 km/h. “Mods will do twice that speed or more. In our group we have an electric powered mod and a 4-cylinder turbo diesel out of a Volkswagon among others… those are always attention getters.” Vogel said the urge to launch the Lawnmower Fanatics group stems from the fact that Provost had been doing lawnmower rac-
ing for several years, and that’s where the group got their start. “My home town of Weyburn Saskatchewan was also doing some mower racing, so I knew there was more around, and surprisingly, there were lots. The whole purpose of LMFAO was to pull these shows together and get it more mainstream. It is a cheap and easy, safe, and overwhelmingly fun form of motor sports and we try to keep minimal rules to keep it fun for all. “It is also easily family oriented. My kids are big into it now- you can teach them, help them build, unlike most other expensive or complicated motorsports, with some guidance and advice, a kid could build and campaign their own mower on funds from a paper route, after school job, or even mowing lawns. In fact, my son is doing a lot of the welding on the builds and rebuilds this winter.” LMFAO has around 10 confirmed events this summer, which includes Provost, Burdett, Taber, Rimbey, Plamondon, Ardmore, Vegreville, and Wainwright in Alberta. In Saskatchewan they’ll race in Nipawin, Regina and Weyburn. “Weyburn is over 700 kilo-
meters from Wainwright, but is also my home town so it makes the trip worthwhile,” Vogel said. With a summer booked travelling abroad to shows, it begs one to ask just who cuts the grass at home? “There are some trade secrets we just cannot give away,” Vogel said.

Exotic looking trees with strings of red lights, a flickering fireplace, glittery coloured ornaments, musical and vocal charm from local singers and musicians, and belly dancing, all added to the sumptuous atmosphere in which Alberta adventure and romance author, Sarah Kades served as the centerpiece of the evening. Bucket draws also gleamed with possible gifts for a

Living with joy everyday Rosanne Fortier Nettie Zaleschuk is one of those people whose eyes and smile are warm and inviting. She makes everyone who is within her reach feel welcome. Nettie was born in 1923 in the Innisfree district, and she will be turning 90 years old in September. “We weren’t poor when I was young because we had food, clothing and shelter. There was no reason to complain.” Growing up on the farm, she explained about the chores she was assigned. “There was lots of hard work on the farm to do. Since I was seven years old, I fed the chickens, gathered their eggs, fed the hogs, brought a cow from a quarter of a mile, and did whatever needed to be done because

my parents were busy working in the field. It wasn’t hard but just a part of my life. We had to do it, so we just did it,” Nettie explained. “I always listened to my parents. If there was work to do, I just did it and after a while, a person enjoyed it too.” “I was the youngest of four girls and I had to listen to my sisters so this didn’t leave a lot of room for disobedience.” When asked about her school days, she recalled the walk down. “We walked one and a half miles to public school and when I was in grade six, we walked three and a half miles to school,” she said. What did they do for fun? “We didn’t have toys back then. Where we lived, there was a hill with a bush behind and we invented our own games and recreation. I remember making sleds out of paper boxes and sliding down the hill with these,” Nettie said. Nettie recalled her teenage years as pleasant times. “I walked six miles to dances and we had so much fun when we arrived over there. During this time, I had plenty of friends and my best friend was my neighbor and the same age as myself.” It was at a dance that she met her husband to be. “It wasn’t love at first sight. As a matter of fact, I didn’t
know him so I felt nothing at first for him. But my feelings for him grew as we got to know each other. There was our mutual liking for each other as we shared the same faith and attended church regularly
when the doctor mentioned about him.” She has been a widow now for 13 years. “I wish my husband was still alive but he’s out there with the angels.” Her advice for a happy

after we got married. He was a cantor in the church, which means he sang at weddings and funerals. They say if you pray together, you stay together,” Nettie said, a few tears sliding down her cheek as she continued; “We were married 56 years and had a very special marriage. There was a lot of love in it. My husband was kind, good to the children and me, polite, possessed integrity, and was respectful. I never heard any criticism from him and I thought a lot of him too.” Nettie chuckled when she remembered visiting her doctor. “He told me that my husband must have been a good guy because I broke down
marriage is to always try to get along; if you have disagreements sit down and talk it over. “As far as I was concerned, I don’t think I did anything wrong but it’s hard for a person to see this. I’m not perfect. I would say that instead of squabbling and yelling, sit in a room and talk, it will get better.” Nettie and her husband had six children. “The first five were girls and then a boy arrived. She told the story of her youngest child’s birth. “I wasn’t feeling well when we went shopping so I checked in with a doctor. When he saw me, he told me I would be staying in the hospital and my husband could visit me later. When my

husband arrived he was told that he had a son and he exclaimed, ‘Thank God!’ My daughters were great children but I was happy for him too.” Nettie got married in Two Hills and lived on the farm for 25 years. In 1968, they moved to Vegreville, where she thought it was a very nice town with lots of friendly people in it. “After we left the farm, my husband started work as a janitor at St. Joe’s, and then he switched to a job as a Ward Aide for the Auxiliary.” Later Nettie had to work because they had three more children to take care of with the youngest being eight years old. “The best friend I had as a teenager, helped me obtain the job in the kitchen at the Minburn Auxiliary hospital. This institution was called Vegreville Long term Nursing Home later. My friend was a cook over there. After working in the kitchen, I was asked one day by the administrator to be the assistant cook. I was scared because I didn’t think I could do this task since I never cooked for 94 people before in my lifetime,” Nettie continued to describe how she did it. “I had to do it, so I just went in and did it. After a few weeks, this job became easier. I would tell people to never say no, always try and see if you can do something before you shut your mind to it.” When asked about hardships, Nettie said she didn’t recall any bad times. “My mother came to live with us for three years and after two years, she had a stroke. In those days, they didn’t put people in the hospital so I had to take care of her. There was my young family and we had three bedrooms upstairs with my mother sleeping
downstairs. She had kidney trouble and if she needed something, she poked her cane on the wall. At this time, I rushed down the stairs without turning on the lights. My neighbor said I was going to kill myself. But my mother never had any bad accidents. Then we built a walker for her and later, she went to the Auxiliary Hospital.” “Life is too short to get upset or go against people. Everyone has their own attitude and we have to accept the person for who they are and for what their point of view is,” she added. “If I don’t feel like I did anything wrong, I don’t worry about what others think and if I do something wrong, I apologize. As far as work goes, do what you have to do and everything will work out well in the end.” Nellie chuckles easily. “Going on 90, a person has all kinds of aches and pains but I don’t dwell on this discomfort. Life is good now. I like people and enjoy welcoming a stranger. Everything is great where I live now. The staff and residents at Homestead Lodge are like one big family. There are plenty of recreation activities. It’s always good to keep busy because when a person is working or playing, they don’t have time to think of their troubles,” she said. She is seldom lonely. “My children live close by. The furthest distance is the two of them that live in Innisfree. Then I have one residing in Lavoy, Ranfurly and two of my children live right here in Vegreville.” Nettie’s family inherited her warm heart; after the interview her grandson rushed into the room to give her a big hug, while her daughter and son-inlaw followed behind.

Caroline Knowles Wendy Brook Music Festival Association It may become a regular feature of winter – the Wendy Brook Vocal Workshop. About 25 adults and children participated in two workshops and a master class February 7-9 at the United Church. The Youth Workshop was led by Scott Leithead, the founder and director of the Kokopelli Choir of Edmonton. Scott was assisted by Tova Olson accompanist and piano teacher from Camrose as well as Mxolisi Magagula, an exchange student from South Africa. The day was themed around African music. Scott has close connections with choirs in South Africa so passed on a lot of interesting information about South African music and culture with the help of Mxolisi who is a member of the student choir of the University of Pretoria. Scott brought with him a large selection of percussion instruments, drums, bells and rattles for the students to try. So it was a lively day.
The Master Class for 6 serious singers preparing for the Wendy Brook and other festivals was conducted by Trent Worthington on Friday evening. Trent, formerly Associate Conductor of Pro Coro Canada and experienced vocal music clinician and adjudicator was making his fourth visit to Vegreville in that capacity. The six singers in the Master Class were put through their paces by Trent and given tips on improving voice production and expression and musi-
cality. On Saturday the Adults and senior student singers had their turn with Trent leading a workshop in which the participants learned several new songs
varying from old Italian music to the Beatles “Yesterday” and the Spanish song “Besa me mucho”. Trent was assisted by Viola Braun-Fox as accompanist.

Rosanne Fortier Shrove Tuesday is a time to feast, which is why Vegreville United Church held their 15th annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 12. The dining hall had a full house of diners chuckling and mingling where even a young lad, Jasper Adejore who is not a big fan of
pancakes, after taking a bite asked his mother, Helen for extra helpings. During this supper, Reverend Carolyn Woodall greeted and conversed with diners, while participants also got to meet new-comers. Why do people consume pancakes, ham, sausages, etc. at this time? It is their
last chance to consume food composed of meats, eggs, flour, or other rich ingredients before the 40 days of lent when they will have to refrain from eating these dishes. Ash Wednesday follows Shrove Tuesday, which marks the commencement of the traditional fasting in the days leading up to Easter.

Murder mystery surprise twist turned into hit Rosanne Fortier Intrigue was in abundance at the Vegreville Train Station Restaurant on February 2 and 9 while the Last Train from Ukraine Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre unfolded. Local Actors performed this production. Ellen Dunn, owner of restaurant, MC and organizer for this event led the audience initially to the crime scene. While viewing, participants interchanged ideas and treated themselves to appetizers. Moments later, Ellen MC stated, “The murderer may not lie even if they are a murderer.” She then introduced the first four suspects while each one spoke about their backgrounds, which prompted the audience to brainstorm about the method, motive and opportunity behind the murder. Going around, these suspects handed out clues and extra information while encouraging everyone to take notes. After this, the four suspects proceeded to visit the dining tables and during this time, laughter and fellowship floated around the restaurant while the audience consumed a four course meal and drank wine. A bit later, a chill filled the air while each suspect went to the front to announce if they were guilty. A surprise twist came when everyone was informed that none of the suspects were murderers, instead it turned out to be an accident because the person jumped out of the train and unfortunately was dead as a result of the fall. Despite this being one of the answers, no one guessed that this happened. Ellen had rewritten the murder mystery that was performed. From this, Ellen announced that the results were more fun if it was an accident instead of an actual murder. Hence, the winner was picked from a random draw and they won a framed playbill. All the actors also received this prize. Ellen was grateful for everyone’s participation in the event, especially Donna Watson who introduced Ellen to the other cast members, and for Watson’s support with the production. Yvette Pedersen took a moment to speak highly of Ellen’s efforts also. “Ellen put a lot of work into this event. The team wants to thank her for all her organizing and imagination that went into this to make it a great night for everyone,” she announced. Deb Zaleschuk gave her impression also. “The whole

event was a very warm, fun evening. Ellen is a wonderful host.” The proceeds will help to generate funds for the Crisis Association and to assist towards purchasing a hospital ventilator, as $5 from every ticket will be put towards these organizations. Life on stage Did you ever wonder what it was like to act or perform in any way in front of a crowd? The actors gave their view on this and more. Jocelan Wagner (Ludemila Bhavorski) stated how she felt about being in front of an audience performing. “I enjoyed being involved with this production tremendously because the audience was really brainstorming, laughing, asking questions and interacting with each other to find out who the murderer was. From this, it felt like we were giving a proper presentation. This created such a good feeling that I feel downhearted to see it end.” What asked what her previous experience in this field was, Wagner explained, “We are local actors with five of us being from the Senior Citizen Sunshine
floor curling club. I have performed before in different venues and manners by singing and playing and being part of the Bluebird Country Jamboree, so, overall, I’m used to being in front of an audience. Each time, it feels like home to me, a place where I can belong.” Wagner described her commitment. “There was a dress rehearsal prior to having the first presentation. This meant giving up a bit of time and balancing a funeral before doing this event, which I didn’t mind a bit.” Yvette Pedersen (Princess Sharin Babble) described how she felt about performing in front of an audience. “This was my first performance so I was nervous at first because I didn’t know what to expect. But once we had our meeting together and did dress rehearsal, it went well and each one made me more comfortable to perform.” When asked how she felt the audience responded, Pedersen commented, “The audience responded well by asking a lot of questions and they were laughing a lot so they seemed to be enjoying themselves.”
What was the commitment involved? “I was asked to perform in this production and I said sure right away because I’ve only been here three months and this was an opportunity to get to know people and support a good cause.” Pedersen said she wouldn’t consider acting professionally, but would definitely take part in another local production. Donna Watson (Ursula Undress) was the next actor to say how the crowd responded and give her impression of performing. “The audience responded very well. They seemed to be really enjoying the play because they were eager to ask questions and curious to know who the murderer was.” “Since I was in a play previously and always liked
and was interested in drama and acting, this wasn’t difficult,” Watson said. “I love [live performing]. Actually, it’s a healthy adrenaline rush. This is a means of entertainment that gets people thinking, guessing and just having a good time. I enjoy all the arts but visual arts are my favorite.” Would she like to do this professionally? “My path is changing and I’m interested in psychology right now but
then I participate in this because a person needs to have a balance in life with recreational activities included in it.” The other cast members were Victor Pederson as Wey Awfcorce, Jean Hughston as the Duke, Nettie Charuk as Hans Dawn, Marlene Roth as Maxim Speedoffski, and Mary Ryan as Mary K Trairie.
Initially, these two actors waited to speak about their life and role as being suspects in the murder mystery. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)

Voting for a show Rosanne Fortier With their teachers away, the students played by gathering together at Vegreville Centennial Library on February 6. The evening initiated with Diane Saric, Student Success Coach for MODEL Project, asking the students to vote on a movie. Hotel Transylvania won as their choice. Ryan Veldkamp,
Coordinator for MODEL Project explained what this event was about. “This is our last scheduled teen movie night so far for this year. It’s teacher convention so, it’s a good opportunity to kick-off a long weekend in a safe venue with visits from friends as well as enjoying some popcorn,” Veldkamp said. The student’s opinions continued to be at stake as

Veldkamp went on to say, “We’re going to ask a bunch of students in the school for feedback on what they wish to include for future events. As well as this, we’ll have some meetings at the library and go from there. The movie night has been quite popular and this should continue with extra activities added to it. There will be something for teens to participate in.”
