RCMP files from FEBRUARY 14 - 20 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser February 14 09:08- One of multiple calls for collisions due to road conditions. This one was on 49th St and 56 Ave in Vegreville.

There were 3 more calls on the 14th all attributed to the roads and weather conditions.

14:30 – Call from a friend of a client who indicated that they were having a difficult time and may be considering self-harm.

Members attended the location and spoke to the client who indicated that they were having a tough time but that there was no concern warranted. Members discussed the issues with the client and offered additional resources to assist.

16:21 – Report of mischief at a residence.

Members attended and located a female who showed signs of intoxication and was creating a disturbance. EMS was called to evaluate the subject who was later arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

February 15 10:45 – Report of multiple instances of snowmobile tracks crossing private property in the rural Mundare area. The landowner indicated their concern for property crimes in the area. Members attended and patrols were made for the snowmobiles which turned up negative.

14:43 – Traffic stop conducted when members on patrol observed a driver fail to stop at a stop sign entering Hwy 16 near Mundare. The driver failed to provide valid registration. The driver was issued two tickets. The first for failing to stop at a stop sign before entering an intersection carrying a voluntary penalty of $405 and operating a motor vehicle without registration carrying a VP of $324.

17:33 – Call to report a mask violation at a public building in Vegreville. A patron refused to put a mask on. Members attended and located the subject of the complaint who was wearing a face shield.

They discussed the locations rules requiring a mask and the client left the location without incident.

18:17 – Report of mischief to a vehicle in Vegreville on 43 St near 52nd Ave. A Toyota Highlander SUV had the rear window smashed out. Under investigation.

22:45 – While on patrol, traffic services located a Western Star Semi with Saskatchewan plates with tail lights that were not working. A traffic stop was conducted and it was determined that the driver was driving while unauthorized. A ticket with a mandatory court appearance was issued.

February 16

14:50 – Report of a vehicle stolen from in front of a house in Vegreville. A subject described as a “white male” jumped into a running green 2006 Ford Fusion and drove off. A neighbour witnessed the crime.

The vehicle has since been recovered.

Investigation revealed that the vehicle was offered to a friend on loan but there misscommunication on taking the vehicle. It was later returned by the friend. *** Lending a vehicle to a friend does not constitute theft if it is inconvenient to the owner.

15:46 – Complaint of erratic driving. A 1992 blue GMC pickup truck was reported as aggressively approaching a stop sign and then sliding through while unable to stop. The vehicle attempted a turn, slid into the oncoming lane of the adjacent roadway. The registered owner of the vehicle has been identified and has been the subject of multiple other traffic complaints. Under investigation.

February 17

22:19 - Report of an assault at a household in Vegreville. Members attended and determined that no assault had taken place.

The father in the household was at odds with the daughter’s boyfriend. Members mediated a discussion between all parties about respect in the household. No charges were warranted.

23:04 – Report of a disturbance at a Vegreville residence. The complainant indicated that there was loud music playing all night and many nights in a row, but he could not identify where it was coming from. Members called the complainant back who would not provide any details on the incident or himself and was annoyed that the RCMP were calling him and told members never to phone him again.

February 18 08:04 – Report of a break and enter to a commercial location in rural Vegreville.

Members attended and learned that a sea can was broken into overnight. The thieves made off with a quantity of tools and other items. Under investigation.

13:37- Report of shoplifting at a Vegreville business. Members attended, located the suspect and recovered the goods. There were no charges as per the request of the business, but the subjects were banned from the location.

20:44 – Report of suspicious activity.

Caller indicated that they observed a white Ford truck stop in front of a house in Vegreville. Five males exited the vehicle with one carrying a baseball bat.

The group approached the house but did not enter the home. Under investigation.

February 19 14:15 – Report of a break and enter to a cottage in Minburn County. The owner indicated that multiple items were taken including a pellet gun, diesel fuel, blankets and other items including four dirt bikes. Members attended and noted that entry was gained forcibly via a door.

Under investigation.

February 20 02:28 – Traffic stop conducted in Vegreville. Members noted that no one in the vehicle (four occupants) were wearing their seatbelts. Further investigation revealed a fifth individual hiding in the back of the vehicle under milk crates. One of the occupants was on conditions and found to be in breach. The 35-year-old female from Sherwood Park was arrested for breaching conditions and later released with documents for court. The 38-yearold male from Wainwright found hiding was charged with taking a vehicle without owner’s consent, operating a motor vehicle without holding a valid license, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to signal a turn, no seat belt and obstruction. Other charges are pending on the group including possibly multiple counts of seatbelt violations and obstruction.

19:10 – Report of multiple youth refusing to wear masks at a business in Vegreville. The group were belligerent to the manager but did leave when asked to do so.

During the week there were 75 calls for service made in total including: 2 false alarms, 1 false 911, 2 animal strikes, 3 wellbeing checks, 7 calls under the Mental Health Act or related to mental health, 2 COVID, and approximately 7 tickets from traffic enforcement.

Freedom Convoy 2022 Protest Sparks Debate and Court Challenge Michelle Pinon News Advertiser The police crackdown on ‘Freedom Convoy 2022’ protesters in the Nation’s Capital on Friday, Feb. 18 resulted in more than 190 arrests as well as the freezing of bank accounts of several organizers and donors alike.

The massive operation involving police officers from various parts of Canada was conducted through the Emergencies Act that was invoked four days prior in an effort by the Liberal Government to permanently end the three-week long occupation of Ottawa’s downtown core.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service stated that 21 people had been transported to hospital, from inside the secured area since Friday and no life-threatening injuries had been reported.

Members of the House of Commons resumed debate on the Emergencies Act Saturday. That same day, Premier Jason Kenney announced on Twitter that his United Conservatives will launch a court challenge of the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act. Kenney said the invocation of the Emergencies Act was: unnecessary, disproportionate, violates natural justice, intrudes into provincial jurisdiction and creates a dangerous precedent.

There are four types of emergencies under the Act. The Prime Minister invoked what’s called a “Public Order Emergency,” which would arise from a threat to national security, stemming from: A) “espionage or sabotage that is against Canada or is detrimental to the interests of Canada or activities directed toward or in support of such espionage or sabotage, B) “foreign influenced activities within or relating to Canada that are detrimental to the interests of Canada and are clandestine or deceptive or involve a threat to any person, C) “activities within or relating to Canada directed toward or in support of the threat or use of acts of serious violence against persons or property for the purpose of achieving a political, religious or ideological objective within Canada or a foreign state, and D) “activities directed toward undermining by covert unlawful acts, or directed toward or intended ultimately to lead to the destruction or overthrow by violence of, the constitutionally established system of government in Canada, Following the Emergencies Act being invoked, the Government has to table in Parliament their reasoning for using it within seven days. The reasoning was tabled Wednesday night. Debate began on Thursday, but was postponed until Saturday in light of Friday’s police crackdown.

Conservative MP for Lakeland Shannon Stubbs stood up in the House of Commons Saturday to deliver her remarks. “Today, I must oppose the Prime Minister’s unjustified invocation of the Emergencies Act for the first time in Canada. Like so many watching from home in Lakeland I am struggling with the events of the last two days. Seared in my mind are scenes of Canadians literally and metaphorically trampled, pushed back, struck down, driven out and away by the might, scope and scale of the unrestrained power of the state.

Like many colleagues here, I’ve lived, worked and walked in the downtown core of Ottawa for the past three weeks. And my truth is this, the most violent obstruction of justice started Friday. My constituents are asking what is going on here and how the heck did it all come to this?

Canadians have faced threats without the legislation that is designed only for crisis when there are no other options, which we debate with heavy hearts today.

The Emergencies Act was never designed or intended to be used to limit the rights of Canadians who oppose government measures. The Prime Minister attacked and then refused to meet or hear from Canadians with whom he disagrees. And he’s imposed his heavy handed will despite the opposition from seven provinces to end

increasingly pointless mandates.

The Emergencies Act requires threats to the security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Canada including serious violence against persons or property impediments to democracy and “urgent, temporary or critical situation that seriously endangers the health and safety of Canadians that cannot effectively be dealt with by provinces or territories.”

Stubbs said all of this did not add up. “Law enforcement already uses and can use existing measures and tools to clear protests and clear borders.” She pointed out that it had already been done through law enforcement measures in other provinces recently, citing several protests, including the Coutts border and Ambassador bridge blockades.

“I believe in the Rule of Law and freedom. So, I am for individual rights, limited government, personal responsibility and social cooperation. I am against quashing dissent, authoritarian policies, tyranny, even if it’s popular, and using police to achieve these ends. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association, (CCLA) said protests in a democracy express and share their political messages.

Many protests are disruptive. It’s possible for protests to be both disruptive, peaceful and non-violent. Destructive protests, while unlawful, can be the most effective way of raising awareness. Through history, countless wrongs have been lawful and justified by governments and citizens. Basic rights and freedoms have been illegal.

It’s not never the side in favour of the invasive, unforgiving, unyielding power of the state, and against the sovereignty and freedom of individuals over themselves and their lives that is right. One day we will be judged for this and Conservatives will be on the right side. I hope every MP will be too.”

On Monday evening the House of Commons approved the extraordinary and temporary measures in the Emergencies Act. The vote was 185-151 with the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois opposing the motion to confirm the declaration of the emergency.

After the vote, Candice Bergen, Interim Leader of the Conservative Party, made a motion to resume debate on the Declaration of the Emergency. According to Section 59 of the Emergencies Act, debate must resume within three sitting days of the motion being introduced. According to the Parliamentary calendar debate will have to resume on March 2.

I’m unsure how to start this. Once again I am left searching for words to adequately summarize how I feel. I’m flabbergasted.

Let’s start with the Emergencies Act. This legislation, years in the making, was enacted in 1988 to replace the War Measures Act. The Emergencies Act gives police additional powers and enables banks to freeze accounts of people associated with the protest.

You can read the entire text of the act on the Government of Canada website. It is surprisingly brief and efficient when compared to many other pieces of legislation. Near the beginning of the text there is a definition of a “National Emergency” as it pertains to the Act. National emergency 3 For the purposes of this Act, a national emergency is an urgent and critical situation of a temporary nature that • (a) seriously endangers the lives, health or safety of Canadians and is of such proportions or nature as to exceed the capacity or authority of a province to deal with it, or • (b) seriously threatens the ability of the Government of Canada to preserve the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Canada and that cannot be effectively dealt with under any other law of Canada.

So, let’s look at this, not tinted by an Ottawa lens or from someone attempting to score political points. As PM Trudeau so eloquently stated in 2018 when groping allegations came to light, “people experience things differently.”

A: Did the protests in Ottawa and elsewhere endanger lives, health or safety of Canadians? Could the province not deal with this? I do not believe there were any instances of violence. There was no news coverage of ambulances or medical personnel attempting to address a medical emergency in the protest area.

B: Did the protests SERIOUSLY threaten the Government of Canada? Only in a world of frightened people who are in perpetual fear heightened by big trucks, loud horns, DJ’s and of course, bouncy castles.

There are a select few people who feel that triggering the Emergencies Act was a necessary step. Those who do feel it was necessary, may want to take a second look.

Sec. 490.8 of the Criminal Code already allows for a federal or provincial attorney general to act to freeze the funding of groups breaking the law. It was this section of the law that the Ontario government used to freeze funding for the Freedom Convoy five days before the federal government announced it would enact the Emergencies Act. Other jurisdictions across the country were able to deal with protests without the Emergencies Act. If you saw our reporting of the protest in Edmonton, the pictures showed you everything you needed to know. Many hundreds of vehicles clogging arteries in our capital city. Similar protests occurred in major cities across Canada and of course, at the Coutts border crossing.

Regardless of the political posturing between Premier Jason Kenney and the Feds about who asked for what, the blockade was removed and the RCMP took care of the troublemakers. A feat that Ottawa police either could not or would not equal.

Ottawa police were poorly prepared despite more than a week’s lead time from social media that protesters were coming. They, much like the federal government, chose to sit on their hands in a wait and see approach which resulted in an encampment and unwelcomed Ottawa street party by uninvited guests.

It is also quite odd that debate and a vote could not be held Friday because of the protestors’ proximity to parliament. For more than two years now, our government was able to debate other items during COVID-19 and actively pushed for remote sessions. How is this debate different? Could this not be done remotely?

Triggering the Emergencies Act in this manner sets a dangerous precedence. I say this because looking back, the law is not being applied equally.

Oka Crisis. July 11 – September 26, 1990. This dates back hundreds of years with the Mohawk pressing for recognition of their land rights since 1761. While far too complicated to address here, protests in support shut down transcontinental rail traffic.

Talk of the Town on Universal Basic Income Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent There have been some articles published in newspapers and magazines in which politicians and professionals involved in social services state that it would be a good idea for Canada to have Universal Basic Income (UBI) for all adults. This would mean that every adult would receive a monthly cheque from the Federal Government for the same amount of money to assist with basic living expenses.

When I asked citizens from Vegreville and area how they felt about this, I received the following responses.

Shayne Lovig said this sounds nice in theory and would be necessary if automation takes off. “But in the meantime, it would drive wages up (the government would have to provide some incentive to go beyond UBI), I sure as heck wouldn’t want to work at a store dealing with crappy customers for less money than I would get for staying at home.

That would then drive prices up on everything to pay for increased wages. There isn’t a corporation on earth that would willingly cut into their profit margins for the sake of their employees.

It would have to be paid for by increased wealth and corporate taxes which would go over about as well as baptizing a cat.

Kristine Higenell commented that as good as it sounds, how would we pay for it? “Especially under the governments we have.

And less people would want to work. As they would find ways to live off the government income. So how would we fill their jobs?

We already have a labour shortage with the pandemic. Do we want to make it worse?

Then there’s the flip side that everyone has the assistance and they could get off the streets and create a better life. Families wouldn’t have to work 40 to 100 hours a week to afford groceries, child care and basic needs. This would leave them more time for personal activities. But then again how would we pay for it?”

Jennifer Zwicker mentioned that it would be paid for by the reduction in active and acute social services as this would offset the cost. “Think of it as an ounce of prevention instead of a pound of cure.

Robbie Chomik said, “Check out all the help wanted signs. Do we need to pay people to not work?

Susan Prestash said, “Actually when you think about it, we already sort of have a Universal Basic Income with programs like Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), Supports for Independence, Old Age Security, and even Child Tax Benefits are really a way of balancing the playing field and assuring everyone has some sort of financial support.

If we could roll all of that into one agency, it would cut back on administration and bureaucracy, and save tax dollars. And we’re talking about a pretty meager income. Very few people are going to choose to live on it if they don’t have to. While my faith and my own sense of social justice makes me wish we didn’t need the government to play that kind of caretaker role. We should be taking care of each other. The reality is that it does. It makes sense to streamline it.”

Stephanie Shaw said it would create a lazy society, and you would end up with everyone living in poverty. “People will always take more than they give, especially in situations like this.

This would be a terrible idea. It would punish those that work hard and reward those that are lazy.”

Jason Tkachuk commented that The Fraser Institute had suggested if we eliminated every other social program and simply created an over under style calculation on income tax instead of credit this would actually save money. “But this could create other issues such as inflation.”

Kim Dimmock said it should be seniors who get an increase in the amount of money they get from the government.

Nicole Yarochuk mentioned that people should be required to go for drug testing two times randomly a year before they get this funding. If the drug they are taking is not a prescribed drug, they should lose their funding.

90 Years Ago – February 24, 1932

Thieves broke into the Third Bros. Drug Store and stole a quantity of cigarettes and chocolate bars plus a few dollars in the till. A flashlight is missing and possibly a few other odds and ends not yet noticed. Entrance was effected through the rear door by means of a brace and bit which had been left hanging conveniently in the warehouse at the back of the store. The timely arrival of const. Bob Henley prevented more extensive taking on the part of the eggs.

It was seen that there were three of them though it is not definitely known just who they were.

Constable Ted Davies, Jack W. Campbell and John Padleski were busy last week searching for moonshine north-east of Two Hills.

Two farmers were found to be in possession of stills.

Henry Shandro has the contract for supplying forty six tons of ice for the two butcher shops in Willingdon and the New Willingdon Hotel.

The Corona Hotel on 100th St. in Edmonton was totally destroyed by fire on Sunday night, entailing a loss of $330,000. Other buildings damaged brought the total loss to over $500,000.

According to the Observer’s submarine radio system, the name of Buster Shaw of Vegreville, is now regarded with considerable awe and respect in the ranks of the Kinsmen curlers. The reason is that buster, assisted by Stan Samuelson, John Decore and Gordon Strong, reached a pinnacle of fame by winning the Kinsmen bonspiel held in Edmonton. Other Vegreville Kinsmen rinks were made up of Dr. Kuzyk, Dr. Nikiforuk, W. Duholke, and George Warren skip.

50 Years Ago – February 24, 1972

Vegreville MLA John Batiuk informed the Observer last week that tenders for the new provincial building have been let and will be opened about mid-March with construction to take place immediately thereafter. The new building is expected to cost about $450,000 and will be situated on Main Street and 48th Ave., south of the present RCMP barracks.

Eighteen rinks took part in the annual Lavoy Bonspiel last weekend and a rink skipped by Don Woloshyn walked off with the major prize in the Grand Challenge. Runners up were the Walter Sribney rink followed by T. Siminiuk and H. Dinwoodie.

Vegreville barrister Joe Blonsky was duly installed president of the Vegreville Chamber of Commerce taking over from Bill Slipp.

25 Years Ago - February 25, 1997

Leon Benoit will carry the Reform banner in the Lakeland constituency in the next federal election. Over 250 people attended the St. Paul meeting. Also vying for the nomination was Valerie Morrow of Vegreville.

The Case farm equipment dealership in Vegreville has been acquired by Edmonton-based Versa Capital Corporation, along with eight other dealerships in central and northern Alberta. Other locations are Red Deer, Wetaskiwin, Camrose, St. Paul, Morinville, Fort Saskatchewan, Grande Prairie and Dawson Creek, B.C. Vegreville Firefighters were called out late Friday afternoon, February 21 but were unable to prevent the destruction of a mobile home at Wood and Garden Estates. The cause of the fire was not known at press time.

The fourth annual meeting of the Vegreville Food Bank Society was held with 14 members present. The community and surrounding area continue to give great support to the work of helping with short term assistance to those needing food. In 1996 the food bank supplied 218 hampers to a total of 695 people; of those 301 were children. The majority of people only use the food bank once or twice, although the maximum allotment is three hampers per year.

Thanks to Government, Housing and Energy are becoming Luxuries Mark Milke Aristotle Foundation for Public Policy In a country like ours, with its vast expanses and abundant natural resources, housing and energy should be cheap. Yet over the past two decades, housing prices have shot up much faster than the growth in incomes, and now energy prices are doing the same.

In both cases, much of the blame is on government.

The prolonged rise in housing costs is largely a result of restrictive land-use regulations from city and provincial governments and chronically low interest rates from the Bank of Canada. And the same institutions that have driven housing costs to nosebleed heights are now pursuing energy policies, including restrictions on the development of fossil fuels that are making energy ever-more expensive.

With brief exceptions, we’ve had historically low interest rates for more than 20 years now. After 9/11, central banks around the world cut rates in an effort to stave off a recession. From 4.25 per cent in August 2001, the Bank of Canada’s target for the overnight rate fell to just two per cent in January 2002. After a brief rise to 4.5 per cent by 2007, the rate was back down to 0.25 per cent in April 2009, after the financial crisis. More recently, after a brief fling with nominally higher rates (though only 1.75 per cent, in late 2018), the bank drove interest rates back down to 0.25 at the onset of COVID, and that’s where it remains two years later.

Liquidity and lots of it is often the best response to a crisis but low interest rates for two decades induce moral hazard, with cheap money flowing into stocks and real estate. More people taking on cheap mortgages to chase scarce

housing has created the perfect storm of unaffordable housing prices.

Central bankers are not wholly to blame, however: in many jurisdictions, politicians have pursued policies that have made land much more expensive. An example is former Premier Dalton McGuinty’s creation of Ontario’s “green belt” in 2005, which squeezed the supply of land available for building. Meanwhile, ever-rising development fees and regulatory delays have made land more expensive in cities across Canada.

As for energy, governments and central bankers are following the same policy path: squeezing supply.

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem and former governor Mark Carney both endorse, explicitly and implicitly, net-zero policies that aim to essentially wipe out fossil fuels by 2050. So, too, do other central bankers, banks, financial institutions, lenders and insurers worldwide.

In 2019, Carney observed that companies that do not reduce their carbon emissions would be punished by shareholders. It may have been simply an observation, but the wish is father to the thought: given his position on fossil fuels, net-zero and the late 2021 COP 26 conference in Glasgow, there’s no mystery about Carney’s ultimate goal: fossil fuels have to go, whether or not green alternatives can replace them, either in cost or performance.

In the meantime, of course, lower production of coal, natural gas and oil is leading to price spikes.

Green dreams don’t change the reality that consumers, businesses and governments still need reliable energy and are all chasing the same increasingly limited supply.

The problem with such policies is that, by the time the damage to affordability is done, it is always too

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Evan Raycraft is the newest member of council in the Village of Innisfree after winning a by-election on Feb. 7.

He was officially sworn into office on Feb. 15 and said he’s looking forward to serving the community, a place he has grown to love since moving there a year and a half ago with his wife and three children.

Raycraft said he is also looking forward to meeting more residents and listening to what they have to say once the weather warms up in spring. He said the village is currently in the process of conducting a public participation survey that will remain open online until Feb. 28. Residents are being asked to provide their input into the 2022 budget, current levels of service and future capital projects.

He also encourages residents to attend the March 15 council meeting where they will be discussing the Village’s proposed traffic control bylaw. Even though first reading of the bylaw has been passed, several revisions have been suggested and will be presented at that time.

One issue that he’d like to see addressed is feral cats. He would like to see a trap, spay and neuter, and return program implemented in the community.

Raycraft is very invested in the future of Delnorte School and ensuring its sustainability. “I feel that our school is a very important part of our community, and without it we are less attractive to families looking to move to the area.

I am currently part of the School Council and on the school’s sustainability committee. We are looking for ways to ensure the viability of the school including specializing education in agriculture and technologies.”

Another component of sustainability is taxation. Raycraft said they have to find a way to lower levels of taxation in the community. He said taxes range from $750 per year for a vacant lot all the way up to $6,200 per year. He said council also needs to examine service levels in relation to taxes.

“We need to take a closer look at the budget and how money is being spent,” stated Raycraft, who has a diploma in business and agriculture from Olds College. He feels his education, knowledge and experience will be an asset to the Village in regards to finances.

Currently, he holds the position of Business Manager with Vantage Builders Ltd. in Vegreville.

Raycraft said he, along with council, plan to develop a strategy to market and promote the community. He said the Innisfree & District Agricultural Society operates several facilities in the Village of Innisfree which helps to keep the community remain vibrant and strong, along with a number of other non-profit organizations.

Raycraft is ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work, and do his part to help make the community thrive and grow.

Patrie said there is a lot of sidewalk traffic in the area with students walking to and from school as well as young children from the local daycare and concerns regarding bee stings, especially if some of the children are allergic.

“It just takes once,” said Patrie, referring to having an allergic reaction which could have serious consequences. It might also make the town liable if an incident should occur.

“The school is very strongly opposed to it,” stated Patrie during the Feb. 1 council meeting. “They want to know what they’d have to do to oppose it,” added Patrie.

Zyla said when the bylaw is presented, council could give first reading and then hold a public hearing if they so desire.

“This type of bylaw doesn’t have to have a public hearing, but you could have one if council so wishes.”

Patrie said there are a lot of different rules regarding beekeeping and feels the town has to do more research on it first.

The request for a beekeeping bylaw came from resident Donna Lecht prior to Christmas.

Cohen Buttner Club Reporter We had our monthly meeting on Dec. 12, 2021. After the meeting we all got to go on a wagon ride around Bruce and sing Christmas Carols for the community.

On Dec. 17, 2021 we had a few club members deliver the food bank donations that we collected at our meeting on Dec. 12.

We had our monthly meeting on Feb. 13, and following the meeting we held our annual 4-H Public Speaking competition.

For junior speeches, we had Tuff Bratrud place first with Keely Chomik in second. For intermediate speeches, Kate Albrecht placed first and Baylee Chomik placing second. For

senior speeches, Quinten Albrecht in first and Katie Hrabec coming in second.

We also had some members do presentations. Rhea Gunderson placed first for junior, Zane Gunderson placed first and Ty Rude placed second for intermediate.

All the members did a great job and we wish them all the best at District Public Speaking.

Our club is putting on Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on March 1 at the Holden Hall.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, I've owned a number of dogs over my lifetime. Most have been "mutts" that I gave a good home to. The other day I was reading the classifieds and came across someone advertising Labradoodle puppies. I thought it was a joke.

Labradoodles? Who ever heard of such a thing? I was even going to mail you the ad until someone told me that they are a real breed. Are they pulling my leg? Do Labradoodles really exist and what are they?

like a tall tail, Labradoodles are a real breed. And as one might suspect, they are a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle.

Carry: It looks kind of like a hunting dog with a bad perm.

Cash: Actually, like most puppies, they are adorable. And often they are referred to as simply "doodles".

Carry: The breed is said to have been created in Australia through the efforts of The Guide Dog Association. It seems a vision-impaired woman needed a guide dog, but her husband suffered from dog allergies. The association's research led them to

cross the Poodle with a Labrador to create a non-shedding, allergyfriendly dog. And it worked.

Cash: As with any breed, the dogs can vary in looks. While some resemble their Labrador ancestors, others look like oversized Poodles. Their hair is usually wavy or curly and several inches long, but typically the breed does not shed. That's enough to make any dog owner interested.

Carry: The dogs also tend to be easily trainable. Although as most of us know, it's still more of a challenge to train the owners than the dogs.

Cash: Labradoodles typically have the warm and loving personality of the Labrador with the genetic allergy-relief characteris-

tics of a poodle. It's become a popular breed among people who suffer from asthma and animal allergies. They are not yet recognized by clubs or organizations so there are no formal standards like there are for other breeds of dogs.

Carry: It's important to note that not all Labradoodles are nonshedding or allergy friendly. It's a common misconception. Like any crossbreeds, the genetics can vary.

Some may still aggravate allergies or shed their coats. So that can result in a lot of hair around the house.

Cash: And like any puppy, given the chance, they'll try to outfox the owner whenever possible.

So if you get one, be sure to hide your socks.

"The hickory-smoked steak sauce I don't like," he replied.

Blockades along the Canadian National Railway line between Toronto and Montreal essentially shut down rail traffic across the country. No Emergencies Act invoked.

Most recently, it was reported that in the early hours of February 17, 2022, twenty masked attackers, some carrying axes, forced nine people to flee from a work site near Houston, British Columbia. They attacked and injured RCMP officers attempting to respond and reportedly attempted to set a truck on fire with workers inside. Coastal GasLink estimated the damage to be “in the millions of dollars.” No Emergencies Act invoked.

Much like the trucker’s convoy, the group in Houston, BC was organized and well-funded. They also carried out a politically motivated attack on a critical infrastructure project vital to Canada’s economy.

So, what’s the difference?

I will leave you to your own conclusions, but I will point out a few obvious flags. Truckers are working class people, not part of the Laurentian Elite. They protested in Ottawa which the east sees on the news.

Houston, BC is… well in Houston, BC and NOT near Ottawa. The protests and disruptions in the West are mostly related to Energy infrastructure.

All one needs to do is look at the news coverage.

CBC is extremely biased in their characterization of both the protests related to the trucker’s convoy and those related to opposition to energy projects. In their coverage, the truckers are villains and hooligans, and those protesting pipelines are concerned for the planet, trying to save us all. Some liberal media in US has even laughed at the suggestion of an insurrection in Ottawa. It’s bizarre.

The genie is now out of the bottle. We suddenly live in a time when if you have “unacceptable thoughts” as deemed by the government and you are brave enough to voice your opinion, there are consequences. You may have your insurance cancelled and your bank accounts frozen making you unable to provide for your family.

One word I heard used recently… Fascism.

True North, Strong and Free? Sounds much different.

Our forefathers who fought for our freedoms would be ashamed.

Children between one and five years of age were able to spend time doing activities with their parents on Feb. 8.

It was the first in-person session since the pandemic of Community Association for Lasting Success, (CALS) Mess Maker program which was held at the Senior Citizens Sunshine Club of Vegreville.

“This program reinforces literacy skills as well as numeracy skills in both children and parents. Our program begins with songs and

rhymes, followed by a story and a group activity. We then move into our sensory activity,” explained Jennifer Dixon, Family Literacy Facilitator for CALS. Dixon added, “Sensory play strengthens a child’s sensory processing skills and nervous systems. Exposure to many different sensory experiences help their brains adjust to future sensory input they’ll encounter at school and in other new environments.”

Akasu Continues to Work to Help People Cope with Loss Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent

Akasu Palliative Care Society (APCS) has been offering a valuable service to local residents since 1987.

APCS vision statement is: Our team supports individuals and their families with understanding and compassionate care as they transition through grief, loss and end of life. We encourage strong community connections and support bereavement workshops and volunteer training.

Akasu volunteers can only go to people individually when they are invited. They have gone to support families by sitting with them if they have requested them to.

Akasu outfits the rooms for palliative care with food and everything that is needed as an ongoing service where they have a cart for the hospital and long term care centre at Two Hills and St. Joseph’s Hospital and long term care centre in Vegreville.

It has been difficult to do this lately due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but during other years, Akasu has brought in speakers and have offered several programs and events.

There are nine team members in the society.

Chairperson, Ardythe Butler said it has been both an honour and definitely a learning experience to serve as the chairperson for this society that she appreci-

ated in the past as both an RN in long term care and a member of the community. “I have also greatly appreciated the willingness of the board members to undertake the work needed to support all the various undertakings we have accomplished over the past year.

Some of the highlights from October 2020 to September 2021 were in October 2020, a new Unit Manager, Sandy Wolfe at St. Joseph’s General Hospital was introduced to the work of APCS, especially in regard to the Palliative Care Suite. Wolfe has since left the position.

Also in October, a $4000 donation was given to Vegreville Care Centre (VCC) for VCC Palliative Care Unit to provide their residents comfort measures.

On December 2020, the pre-recorded annual Christmas Service of Remembrance was presented on both the Park Memorial website and YouTube and an audio version was heard on 106.5.

Over time well over 300 people watched the service.

On March 2021, we continued to meet via Zoom, Michelle Albrecht, new Palliative Care Resource RN, spoke elaborating on her role within the area.

On April 2021, we had a meeting via Zoom where MLA Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk spoke on the importance of palliative care and caregivers then closed with a question and answer period.

In July and August 2021, APCS cosponsored with FCSS a four week program offered at no charge to the community entitled Grief and Loss.

At the recent AGM, Executive Elections were held where the new Executive for APCS was Chairperson, Jenny Cooper, Vice Chairperson, Ardythe Butler, Secretary/ Corresponding Secretary, Anita Wilson, Treasurer, Margaret Johnson, Facebook Administrator/Akasu Web Manager, Charlene Melenka.
