Christmas Tea snows down the season See page 5 for story
Submitted Every Christmas, Deerland employees choose a charity to donate the funds raised through their staff Christmas party. This year, the Vegreville team chose to donate their funds to Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Vegreville for a total of $250. Both the Fort Saskatchewan and

Collaborative Village highlights helping organizations Rosanne Fortier St. Martin’s School bustled with non-profit community services on November 26 when the parent/teacher interviews were doubled-up with the Collaborative Village. “M.O.D.E.L Project partnered with St. Martin’s School to hold this village. Our objective is for community partners to share with families on how they support them. So, the community partners can talk to one another and collaborate on how they support children, youths and families. Teachers can help too because they know the students well and know where to direct the children and families to what support they need.” Amanda Campbell, Student Success Coach for M.O.D.E.L Project said. “So, we have 24 community partners here who support children, youth and families in Vegreville. This village is very organic, it’s about meeting face-toface and talking, developing
some connections and relationships so the families can know where they can access support for themselves or where they can help their friends and family access the support they need because these are non-profit organizations at this village.” AHS Child Rehabilitation Services held a booth. “Our organization works with children’s fine or gross motor, speech or language skills for children who are developmentally delayed in those areas. So, we check the milestones that they should be at for their age and we work with them to support them on their development. For instance, if they don’t start speaking at a certain age, we send them to a Speech Therapist and we also have an Occupational Therapist who works with them for other needs.” Taryn Myhre, Speech/Language Pathologist explained. Vegreville and Area’s Big Brothers Big Sisters hosted another table. “We have two
types of mentoring programs in Vegreville; in-school mentoring and community-mentoring. We support children
and school work,” Ashley Ferguson, Community Program Facilitator said. BBBS noted that children

FCSS provides community counseling, Volunteer Vegreville, individual support for filling forms (not AISH-but everything else), the babysitters course, newcomers support and information and income tax support. Parent Link Centre is a dropin center and it also provides programming for parents and children 0-6 in an individual way and with group parenting courses. CALS offers the
School Breakfast Club, Family Literacy Program and Head Start Program. KidSport is a service that funds registration fees, equipment fees and transportation fees for families with financial barriers. Jumpstart funds registration fees, equipment fees and transportation fees for families with financial barriers. Children and Family Services focuses on support for children with disabilities and foster parent recruitment. M.O.D.E.L Project is about mental health promotion, prevention or early intervention where they connect families with referral agencies, resources and/or other support services. Christmas Tea snows down the season with friendship
A crowd of citizens took in Vegreville United Church annual Christmas Tea on December 6 because the cornerstone of small-town living is in the get-togethers where people meet up with old friends and make new friends. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Rosanne Fortier A Christmas city that spoke of the sights and sounds of the season hung over the citizens. But it was their own village full of friendship and love that really lit up in festivity at Vegreville United Church annual Christmas Tea on December 6. Yes, the cornerstone of small-town living is in the get-togethers where people meet up with old friends and make new friends. The mood of the tea was enhanced by Rev. Carolyn Woodall’s Christmas city and the carolers’ display which was created by hand by Diane Smillie and arranged by Ann Thompson. To complete the event, baking items, Christmas decorations and Lamplighters Christian Books and Gifts were available for purchasing. Vegreville United Church wishes to express their gratitude to everyone who volunteered, attended and helped to make this event possible.

Sopilka lights up the stories of Christmas with dance steps Rosanne Fortier Similar to Ukrainian dancing, the signature of Christmas is the light and expression of life involved in the season. With vivacity, Sopilka School of Ukrainian Dance
presented their annual Christmas Concert at Vegreville Social Centre on December 15. Initially, a ray of sunshine appeared when the Green Group performed Polavski Tanets from the Poltava
region. These young dancers caught the heart of the audience with their hopaz, somersaults and cooperation as a team. The blue group breezed in with Tantsiuiemo Razom from the Poltava Region.

Bright light shines on Christmas story
Shepherds have a special place for baby Jesus while they await his birth. “The sheep went down for the night but the shepherds made sure that everything was just right…”the students said.(Rosanne Fortier/Photo)
Sometimes, it takes children’s celestial voices and innocent demeanors to reaff irm to adults what Christmas really means. St. Martin’s Grades 13 students did this when they blanketed the stage with an awe-inspiring re-enactment of the Christmas story on December 16. “Was the night of Jesus’ birth when all through the town, not a creature was stirring, not even a cow. The animals were munching in the stables when they hoped that the Savior would soon be there. “The sheep went down for the night but the shepherds made sure that everything was just CONTINUED TO PAGE 11

right…” the students said. “There arose such a light, the shepherds looked but it was so bright. There was a beautiful angel up in the sky, the shepherds couldn’t f igure out why… During these moments, many children rushed to the front to witness the beauty of the scene. The audience was then surrounded by voices rising up in song where each acting set was followed by singing. “The angels told the shepherds that a baby, the Savior was born tonight in the Town of David…” The students then sang, Away in the Manager which when combined with ringing of chimes, brought peace and comfort to the audience. Then the gym was darkened and the students held a light to show that Jesus is the light of the world. This concert continued with one child announcing that Santa Claus was his buddy and the students went forth to sing a song about Santa being their pal. After this, the students commented that the under-deer, Rudolph always got so much attention and they didn’t want the other reindeers to feel left out, so they agreed to sing and dance to a song about the reindeer, Blitzen. While the students did this performance, they kept a rollicking rhythm in it. Each of the concert’s performances was greeted with whistles and a continuous applause. Joseph Dumont, Principal stated that the students worked very diligently to prepare for this concert and he wanted to express his appreciation for all their effort while he went forth to acknowledge all the teachers who were involved in producing this concert and he thanked everyone for attending.

bishop and his mother was a holy woman. From the youngest age, Nicholas demonstrated signs of holiness and was described as being dedicated when it came to studying the bible. It is for this reason; he is the patron saint of children. Nicholas received a large inheritance from his parents which he gave to the poor. He was known to secretly give presents. A poor man had no money for a dowry. So, this man’s three daughters couldn’t get ma r r ied. St. Nic hol a s s e c ret ly dropped a bag of gold down the chimney and into the house which meant this man’s oldest daughter could get married. VVA introduces Nadine Crain VVA Submitted Nadine Crain is an artist from Vegreville that enjoys painting with acrylics, although she likes to try out other mediums every once in awhile. Her paintings will often have a lot of color
and texture. Nadine finds painting to be a therapeutic hobby and she hopes to inspire others with the color and beauty in her art. The goal in her paintings is for someone to look at one and be encouraged or in a better mood from seeing it.
Nadine always had an interest in art, and took classes up until grade 12 in High School. While she was in college, Nadine painted every now and then for her own enjoyment. Then in 2011 Nadine decided she wanted to paint with more of a purpose and started showing her paintings at shows in the area. Recently Nadine has found a fascination with painting peacocks and looks forward to creating many more paintings of peacocks in different colors and variations. You can see more of Nadine’s art at www.facebook.com/nadinecrainart. VVA is a group of local artists supporting and promoting the visual arts in Vegreville.
